President Emmerson Mnangagwa has said the <a href="https://www.pindula.co.zw/Unity_Accord">1987 Unity Accord</a> is a key pillar of national peace and stability, and should never be challenged, breached or compromised.
The Unity Accord was signed by the late former President <a href="https://www.pindula.co.zw/Robert_Mugabe">Robert Mugabe</a> and late former Vice-President <a href="https://www.pindula.co.zw/Joshua_Nkomo">Joshua Nkomo</a> at the height of the <a href="https://www.pindula.co.zw/Gukurahundi">Gukurahundi massacres</a> that claimed an estimated 20 000 people in Matabeleland and Midlands provinces between 1982 and 1987.
In his weekly column in a State-owned weekly publication, <a href="https://www.sundaymail.co.zw/embracing-our-past-warts-and-all">The Sunday Mail</a>, Mnangagwa said the Heroes Day commemorations, held today the 8th of August, followed by the Defence Forces Day set for Tuesday revived bitter memories of the liberation struggle.
He said while there were political disturbances in the early years of the country’s independence, peace prevailed after the Unity Accord was signed by Mugabe and Nkomo, bringing together political parties that fought colonialism, Zanu PF and PF Zapu. He said:

Sacred Unity Accord
True, they were fratricidal disturbances in the early years of our Independence, but reason prevailed in the end, as our leaders met, talked and embraced, to give us a legacy of peace and stability we enjoy to this day, and which we have a duty to bequeath to posterity. The Unity Accord which our leaders struck is a key pillar of National Peace and Stability. It should never be challenged, breached or compromised by whomsoever.
</blockquote>
The Unity Accord led to the ending of the unrest and an amnesty followed in 1988 under which every member or former member of the security forces was granted a free pardon in respect of any offence committed during the so-called “anti-dissident” operations. 
Some of the victims, however, have been demanding to be compensated for the loss of their loved ones. Some want the perpetrators to account for their actions.

President Mnangagwa Says The 1987 Unity Accord Should Never Be Breached

<blockquote>NATIONAL PEACE AND RECONCILIATION COMMISSIONER RESIGNS FOR GREENER PASTURES.
The National Peace and Reconciliation Commission regrettably wishes to announce the resignation of one of its nine Commissioners – Mrs Netty Musanhu who had joined the Commission in 2016 like the rest of the other Commissioners.
Her departure is her resolution to a four-year-old conflict of interest in terms of the Chapter 12 Independent Commissions Provision Section 236(2) of the Constitution of Zimbabwe.
As a Commissioner she was in charge of the Victim Support, Gender and Diversity Thematic Area and Resource Mobilization as well as being a Commissioner in charge of Midlands Province.
The National Peace and Reconciliation Commission wishes to inform the public that with immediate effect Mrs Netty Musanhu is no longer a member of the Commission.
She no longer represents the Commission in any private or public capacity. She no longer has the authority to act on behalf of the Commissioners.
She no longer has any portfolio in the Commission. The donor community as some of our key stakeholders should pay special attention to this announcement.</blockquote>

The <a href="https://www.pindula.co.zw/National_Peace_and_Reconciliation_Commission" rel="noopener noreferrer" target="_blank">National Peace and Reconciliation Commission (NPRC</a>) has announced the resignation of one of its nine commissioners, Netty Musanhu over a long-standing matter of conflict of interest.
The Commission did not reveal the outstanding conflict of interest issue that has forced Musanhu to leave the NPRC. It said in a statement:
<blockquote>The NPRC wishes to inform the public that with immediate effect Mrs Netty Musanhu is no longer a member of the commission.
She no longer represents the commission in any private and public capacity. She no longer has the authority to act on behalf of the commissioners. We appeal to the donor community to pay special attention to this announcement.</blockquote>
Musanhu was as the Executive Director of Musasa Project, an organisation that works to protect and capacitate women who are victims of violence before she was appointed to the NPRC in 2016.
At the NPRC, Musanhu was in charge of the Victim Support, Gender and Diversity thematic area and Resource Mobilisation Role.

Musanhu Leaves NPRC Due To 'Conflict Of Interest'

The Minister of Justice, Legal and Parliamentary Affairs Ziyambi Ziyambi said that the government is set to disband Constitutional commissions that duplicate roles.
Two commissions set to be disbanded are the National Peace and Reconciliation Commission (NPRC) and the Zimbabwe Gender Commission (ZGC).
The two commission will be merged into the Zimbabwe Human Rights Commission (ZHRC). Said Ziyambi:
<blockquote>Strictly speaking, a gender commission is a human rights commission, so you cannot have a gender commission which is separate from a human rights commission.
An economy like ours cannot afford or sustain two commissions that do basically the same things.
Our thinking is that we have two commissions chewing into the fiscus but doing one and the same thing.
We would rather have one commission which has those commissioners, and probably within the secretariat, you have a department that deals with gender issues.
If you look anywhere in the world, there is nothing called a gender commission, but there are human rights commissions.
The work that they do is more or less the same, they even attend the same international human rights conferences, but they do so separately . . .
So what it means is the human rights commission in its present structure is being prohibited from dealing with gender equality issues because that function is the responsibility of the gender commission, which does not make sense.</blockquote>

Gukurahundi Commission To Be Disbanded

The National Peace and Reconciliation Commission (NPRC) or Gukurahundi Commission is set to compile information on what happened during the Gukurahundi era starting in March.
Commissioner Leslie Ncube said that the Commission is intent on everyone in the affected communities to participate. Said Ncube:
<blockquote>People in communities know the mass graves that are in their areas….We will be listening to you to lead the process at that local level.
Come to the meetings with a plan of what you want to happen because we will be using participatory methods; we don’t want to plan for people. Our job is not in the office – it’s on the ground because this is where the killings allegedly happened.</blockquote>
Gukurahundi is a term used to refer to disturbances in <a class="mw-redirect" href="https://pindula.co.zw/Matabeleland" title="Matabeleland">Matabeleland</a> and <a class="mw-redirect" href="https://pindula.co.zw/Midlands" title="Midlands">Midlands</a> in the 1980s which resulted in the death of an estimated 20,000 <a href="https://pindula.co.zw/Ndebele" title="Ndebele">Ndebele</a> people.
It was carried out by the North Korean trained 5th Brigade which was an elite regiment of the <a href="https://pindula.co.zw/Zimbabwe_Defence_Forces" title="Zimbabwe Defence Forces">Zimbabwe Defence Forces</a>. Gukurahundi is derived from a Shona language term which loosely translates to “the early rain which washes away the chaff before the spring rains”.
