A long-distance bus belonging to Green Horse Bus Company was swept away while attempting to cross the flooded Mletshane River in Gwanda District on a narrow bridge on Monday.
The bus, travelling from Bulawayo to Gwanda, was carrying 75 passengers when the accident occurred around 3 PM.
Tragically, one person lost their life in the incident, and a three-month-old baby remains missing.
Inspector Loveness Mangena, the spokesperson for the Zimbabwe Republic Police (ZRP) in Matabeleland South Province, confirmed the incident to the <a href="https://www.chronicle.co.zw/one-dead-infant-missing-as-bus-swept-away-in-flooded-river/">Chronicle</a>. She said:

Inspector Mangena added that one passenger, identified as 33-year-old Sthembinto Dube of Mawaza Village in Gwanda District, died on the spot.
The baby girl remains unaccounted for and is feared to have drowned. The deceased was taken to Gwanda Provincial Hospital mortuary.
Inspector Mangena appealed to motorists to avoid crossing flooded rivers, emphasizing that it unnecessarily puts their lives at risk.

To avoid crashing into the Nissan Liberty, the bus driver swerved into the lane of oncoming traffic, resulting in a collision with a kombi that was travelling from Gwanda to Bulawayo. Said Inspector Mangena:

The pregnant woman, who had contracted the disease, went to the shrine to seek help after refusing to be assisted by health officials due to religious beliefs.
According to the Gwanda district cholera situational report released by the Ministry of Health and Child Care (MoHCC) on 13 January, the deceased, including the pregnant woman, were apostolic sect members.

While she was there, the birth attendant and custodian of the shrine contracted cholera along with 12 other family members and neighbours. The birth attendant and two males died.
The Beitbridge MoHCC rapid response team (RRT) attended to the outbreak on January 1 and carried out contact tracing and treatment of symptomatic contacts found.
The deceased was initially hidden from the RRT by family members and later identified by other community members. The deceased refused medical attention from the RRT members.
The family then tried to shift her to another religious shrine in the Mberengwa Masase area, however, she died along the way on January 2.
Her death was reported to the police and was placed at the Gwanda Provincial Hospital mortuary pending a post-mortem.

The family, however, did not disclose that the deceased was a contact of a confirmed cholera death.
On 09 January, the body of the deceased was taken to United Bulawayo Hospitals for a post-mortem and buried on the same day at Jonclyn Resettlement.

Four People Succumb To Cholera At An Apostolic Sect Shrine

The Zimbabwe Republic Police (ZRP) has reported on various crimes that have occurred across the country including murder, hit-and-run accidents, and drug possession.
In Dotito, Mashonaland Central Province, the police are investigating a murder case where the body of an unidentified 4-year-old girl was found dumped in a pit toilet on 8th December 2023. The police are appealing to anyone with information to come forward and report it at the nearest police station.
In Gutu in Masvingo Province, a man named Collen Mawere (43) has been arrested for the murder of his brother-in-law, Afinos Museka (59). The incident occurred on 8th December 2023 at Chihambakwe Business Centre in Gutu. Mawere allegedly assaulted Museka during a heated argument about childcare, causing Museka to fall and subsequently die.
On 9th December 2023, in Chikombedzi in Masvingo Province, four individuals named Godfree Sibanda (28), Last Lisenga (62), Cosmas Mazvetera (45), and Cephas Siziba (22) were arrested in connection with a murder case. The victim, Peterson Chitsengo (40), was assaulted by the suspects during a drinking session on 7th December 2023 at Mateke Business Centre in Mwenezi. Chitsengo sustained head injuries and was admitted to the hospital, where his condition worsened and he passed away.
In Gwanda, Matabeleland South Province, the police are investigating a hit-and-run accident that occurred on 9th December 2023 along the Bulawayo-Beitbridge Road. A male adult was killed after being hit by an unknown motorist who did not stop after the accident. The police are urging anyone with information to report it at the nearest police station.
Furthermore, on the same day, detectives from the CID Drugs and Narcotics in Harare arrested a man named Collen Nyakarenga (35) for the unlawful possession of 1,530 kilograms of dagga (marijuana) with a street value of ZW$50,000,000. The detectives pretended to be potential buyers and arranged a meeting with the suspect at Skyline tollgate along Masvingo Highway. Nyakarenga was apprehended after producing a sack of dagga from his vehicle. The detectives also discovered an additional 16 sacks of dagga at the suspect’s residence. The police are reminding the public about the dangers of drugs and urging people to say no to drugs.

The Meteorological Services Department (MSD), in collaboration with the Department of Civil Protection, has released the <a class="MarkdownLink_linkifiedLink__KxC9G">Zimbabwe Evening Weather Report</a> and Forecast for May 12-14, 2023.
The MSD reported <a class="MarkdownLink_linkifiedLink__KxC9G">scattered clouds</a> in areas such as Harare Metropolitan, <a class="MarkdownLink_linkifiedLink__KxC9G">Mashonaland East</a>, and <a class="MarkdownLink_linkifiedLink__KxC9G">Manicaland provinces</a> in the afternoon, while all other areas had sunny conditions during the day.
For May 13, partly cloudy afternoon conditions are expected in Harare’s Metropolitan, Mashonaland East, and Manicaland provinces, while all other areas should experience clear skies with cold mornings and warm afternoons. <a class="MarkdownLink_linkifiedLink__KxC9G">Wind conditions</a> are expected to vary between light and variable in the east and fresh in the west, including in Matabeleland South, Matabeleland North, Bulawayo, and Midlands province.
MSD said the impacts of cold weather may pose health risks to <a class="MarkdownLink_linkifiedLink__KxC9G">vulnerable individuals</a> and trigger respiratory illnesses in all people. Ground frost may affect crops, particularly in frost-prone areas. Poultry, particularly day-old chicks, are sensitive to temperature declines overnight. High daytime temperatures increase the risk of dehydration and evapotranspiration.
To mitigate these impacts, individuals should dress appropriately in the early hours of the morning, take measures to prevent frost damage in frost-prone areas, stay hydrated, wear a sunhat or use an umbrella when outdoors between 10 am and 3 pm, and monitor plants and animals for moisture and heat stress, giving them adequate water to drink or watering as needed.
The weather outlook for Sunday, May 14, 2023, is as follows: <a class="MarkdownLink_linkifiedLink__KxC9G">Bulawayo Metropolitan</a>, southern parts of Midlands, Manicaland, Masvingo, and Matabeleland South provinces should experience windy and cold conditions in the morning, with brief cloudy intervals in Beitbridge, Mwenezi, and Chiredzi Districts. By the afternoon, conditions are expected to become mild. In all other areas, it should be mostly sunny and warm by midday, but cold in the morning and evening.

The Meteorological Services Department of Zimbabwe (MSD) and the Department of Civil Protection have forecasted that most of the country will have clear skies and experience cool mornings and warm afternoons. 
In its<a class="MarkdownLink_linkifiedLink__KxC9G"> weather report</a> and forecast seen by Pindula News valid until Friday 05 May 2023, MSD said light winds may occur in some areas. However, Beitbridge, Chiredzi, Mwenezi, and Gwanda will be mild and windy with <a class="MarkdownLink_linkifiedLink__KxC9G">scattered clouds</a> from the south.
MSD also cautioned that daytime temperatures can cause dehydration and evapotranspiration, while the temperature difference between day and night can impact vulnerable people’s health and trigger respiratory illnesses. Extreme temperatures can also harm crops and livestock.
The Met department advised farmers to water their crops to minimize the effects of transpiration. They suggested avoiding prolonged sun exposure, especially during the day’s peak. They also recommended ensuring vulnerable individuals have dressed appropriately. Additionally, they advised monitoring plants, animals, and pets for moisture and heat stress and watering them as needed to reduce these impacts.
The <a class="MarkdownLink_linkifiedLink__KxC9G">Met department</a> stated that on Thursday, May 4th, 2023, Beitbridge, Chiredzi, Mwenezi, and Gwanda districts will have scattered clouds from the south and will be mild and windy. Zimbabwe Weather Report And Forecast 26 - 28 April 2023

A man believed to be 23 years old from Mawane village in the Garanyemba area of Gwanda ran amok and destroyed property belonging to his neighbour.
The suspect, Jasper Sibanda, accused his elderly neighbour identified as Gogo MaNdlovu of spreading lies about him. He destroyed her three houses.
Ward 13 Mawane councillor Mitlas Ndlovu confirmed the incident to <a href="https://www.newsday.co.zw/local-news/article/200010063/gwanda-youth-runs-amok">Southern Eye</a> saying Sibanda is currently on the run. Said Ndlovu:

The incident happened last week on Friday around 11 pm, he wanted to kill Gogo MaNdlovu’s two nieces accusing them of gossiping about him.
When they (nieces) heard him threatening to kill them they ran away from home together with their granny and hid in the bush.
That is when Sibanda started destroying the homestead until 4 AM.
There is a big challenge here in Garanyemba of youths engaging in a lot of drug abuse. We need a police station here to curb all these activities.
Another elderly woman from Mawane 2 was also raped last week by another youth. I do not know why these youths are targeting old women.

Ndlovu said the matter was reported to the police.
According to the Society for the Study of Addiction (SSA), Zimbabwe’s illicit substance use problem increased dramatically during the COVID-19 pandemic.
Commonly used substances in Zimbabwe include glue, bronclee, mangemba, cane sprit, marijuana, codeine and methamphetamine (crystal meth).
Very high unemployment rates in Zimbabwe, coupled with poverty and despair, have resulted in increasing numbers of youthful citizens also turning to use drugs as a way of entertainment.

Severe Tropical Storm Freddy upgraded to Tropical Cyclone Freddy this afternoon and is heading towards the northern coast of Mozambique.

Freddy’s outer-spiral cloud bands (stretching over more than a 750 km radius) resulted in cloudy, windy and mild conditions over the southern and eastern parts of the country (Matabeleland South, Masvingo, south-western parts of Midlands, Harare Metropolitan, Manicaland and all Mashonaland Provinces), with light drizzle in Masvingo, Manicaland and southern parts of Mashonaland East. Other parts of the country had mostly sunny but also became windy towards evening.

Windy conditions are expected over much of the country, strengthening towards evening. The <a href="https://www.pindula.co.zw/Meteorological_Services_Department">Meteorological Services Department (MSD)</a> has reiterated that Tropical Cyclone Freddy is strengthening near the west coast of Madagascar. In a weather report and forecast seen by Pindula News, the department said there were isolated thunderstorms in some parts of the country this Monday. Reads the weather update:

The outer fringes of the Inter-Tropical Convergence Zone, currently over the extreme northern parts of the country, resulted in isolated thunderstorms in Harare Metropolitan, Mashonaland Central and Mashonaland East Provinces. Out of these, the highest was only 21mm at Mount Darwin followed by Chinhoyi at 14mm. The rest of the country was mostly sunny due to the influence of Tropical Storm Freddy (currently strengthening near the west coast of Madagascar, more than 1’000 km away), which continues to dry out much of the atmosphere. Meanwhile, moist winds from the southeast coast of Southern Africa have begun encroaching into the southern districts of Masvingo Province.

MSD Update On Tropical Cyclone Freddy

The <a href="https://www.pindula.co.zw/Meteorological_Services_Department">Meteorological Services Department (MSD)</a> of Zimbabwe has forecasted that most parts of the country will experience sunny weather conditions on Monday.

Significant rainfall amounts that were measured were 48mm at Guruve Met Office and 13mm at the Gokwe Met office. Zimbabwe Weather Report, Forecast: 4 - 6 March 2023

A traditional leader in Matabeleland South Province, says outsiders should not harvest mopane worms (amacimbi / madora) in the region as they employ poor methods of harvesting.
This comes after the province has been inundated by people from various parts of the country who have been harvesting the worms since the onset of the rainy season.
Gwanda chief Khulumani Mathema told Sunday Southern Eye that the uncontrolled harvesting of mopane worms threatened the economic well-being of the region. He said:

Amacimbi have been one of the economic enablers for people in our districts.
Now they (outsiders) are chopping down trees, which are the major source of mopane worms breeding.
So one wonders why the Environmental Management Agency (EMA) is not protecting our people.
This is not the way to live; you know these people come here and do their business of collecting mopane worms and some do not even have respect because they cut down the trees.
Another thing is they do not know the process of collecting because they are not supposed to take them when they are still on the tree.
Instead, they should wait until they are now moving off from the tree on their own.

Mathema said it is perplexing that people travel from faraway places to harvest Mopane worms in Matabeleland yet people from the region do not go to other regions to exploit natural resources found there. He said:

The locals know how to collect the worms and understand the whole process to harvest amacimbi.
My question is: Have they ever seen us going to their provinces to collect any of the things that their areas are well-known for?
These people do not respect us and our culture, which is not fair because we no longer live peacefully.
They should not come here because they are now ripping us off our environmental rights.
If they want mopane worms (amacimbi) they should get them from wherever they come from not here.

The traditional leader said their efforts to engage the Environmental Management Agency (EMA) on the issue have not been successful.
A Kaufusi villager, Reboni Noko said outsiders were also polluting the environment by leaving plastic bags and baby diapers everywhere.
Another villager, Relebile Nare said they were losing patience with the “foreigners” that had taken over their area.

Mopane Worms Harvesting: "Outsiders" Accused Of Destroying The Environment

A 21-year-old man teamed up with five accomplices to rob his father of US$14 000, 16 grammes of gold and mobile phones early this year, according to police.
The robbery happened in January this year, according to <a href="https://www.manicapost.co.zw/son-robs-dad-of-gold-us14-000/">Manica Post.</a>
<h2>What happened:</h2>
On January 14, 2022, Carlton Gadzira (21) of Odzi Business Centre hatched a plan to steal from his father, Mr David Gadzira whom he stays with in the same house.
Carlton in the company of five colleagues, armed themselves with machetes, sjamboks and iron bars and broke the doors to gain entry into the house.
They assaulted an occupant of the house, Ms Faith Marara and her son, <a href="https://www.manicapost.co.zw/son-robs-dad-of-gold-us14-000/">Manica Post</a> reported citing Criminal Investigation Department (CID) Manicaland District spokesperson, Detective Sergeant Shake Shanu.
They sprayed toxic substances in their faces, demanding cash.
They stabbed Mr Gadzira with a knife in the left thigh and ordered him to surrender money and cell phones.
The robbers stole US$14 000, an iPhone, 16 grammes of gold, a Samsung S20, and Techno Spark 5pro cellphones and left.
Mr Gadzira made a report at ZRP Odzi.
Investigations led to Carlton’s arrest on November 25. 
Upon being interviewed by the police, Carlton admitted that he had teamed up with Malvin Ruzani, Lovemore Tapura, Admire Tapura, Isaac Harukwani and Kenias Chimbandi to steal from his father.
The next day, Carlton and Ruzani appeared before the Mutare magistrate, Mr Langton Carter who remanded them in custody.
On December 8, detectives from CID Mutare went to Bulawayo to interview Harukwani, Chimbandi, Lovemore Tapura and Admire Tapura who were arrested by CID Gwanda on armed robbery charges.
It was established that they were behind the Odzi robbery.
Harukwani, Chimbandi, Lovemore Tapura and Admire Tapura appeared before Mr Malvin Shortgame at Tredgold Court in Bulawayo on the Odzi robbery charges.
They were remanded in custody awaiting transfer to Mutare after completing their outstanding robbery cases in Gwanda.

A 43-year-old man from Gwanda died after being struck with a half brick on the head allegedly for proposing love to a married woman.

Man Killed For Proposing Love To A Married Woman

The Zimbabwe Republic Police (ZRP) has reported that four unknown machete-wielding assailants pounced on a gold mine in Zhombe and got away with 8kgs of pregnant carbon. 
In a report seen by Pindula News, ZRP said the suspects attacked and injured the security guards at the mine. Reads the statement:

The ZRP is investigating a murder case which occurred in Zhombe on 09/11/22 at around 0300 hours, where four unknown suspects who were armed with axes and machetes pounced at the mine and struck two security guards, Obert Moyo (56) and Herbert Zimbe (47), with axes before stealing 8kgs of pregnant carbon. The two victims sustained severe injuries and were rushed to Kwekwe General Hospital. Obert Moyo was pronounced dead upon arrival.

In the gold industry, activated carbon is used to recover gold from the gold-cyanide complex also known as the cyanide process. It is a technique for extracting gold from low-grade ore by converting the gold to a water-soluble coordination complex.
In January this year, ZRP arrested a man who was found in possession of 05 x 50kg sacks of pregnant carbons which were suspected to have been stolen from Gwanda, a gold mining town in Matabeleland South.
Meanwhile, ZRP Saruwe arrested Prosper Rocque Samanyanga (38) and Hardlife Chitsuro (32) on 09/11/22 for a case of unlawful entry into premises and theft, which occurred at Frenchoeck Farm on 04/11/22. 
It is alleged that the duo broke into a complainant’s storeroom and stole an ATA motorcycle. Police have since recovered the cycle, which had been sold in Darwendale.

Machete-wielding Robbers Pounce On Gold Mine And Get Away With 8kgs Of Pregnant Carbon

A 15-year-old girl from Gwanda was allegedly murdered by her 31-year-old husband who accused her of infidelity.
The now-deceased minor, Silindokuhle Sibanda, stayed with her husband Thandazani Ncube at his parents’ homestead in the Singukwe area.
It is alleged that Ncube assaulted the teenager in the middle of the night while they were on their way home after attending a party on 5 November 2022.
After the attack, Ncube carried the girl home in a wheelbarrow and placed her on their bed.
The minor was found dead the following morning.
Ncube was on Monday arraigned before Gwanda magistrate, Polite Ncube Banda, facing a murder charge. He was remanded in custody to 21 November.
Prosecuting, Ngonidzashe Shumba said Ncube attacked Silindokuhle on 5 November around 11 PM and the minor succumbed to head injuries the following day. Said Shumba:

On 5 November at around 11 PM Thandazani Ncube struck Silindokuhle Sibanda on the back of her head using an unknown object following an altercation. Ncube was accusing the girl of infidelity.
Silindokuhle succumbed to head injuries the following day at around 4 AM.

Earlier, Ncube’s mother, Sibongile Ncube, told the <a href="https://www.chronicle.co.zw/man-31-assaults-15-year-old-wife-to-death/">Chronicle</a> that her son and Silindokuhle had gone to a party at a nearby homestead.
She said in the middle of the night she heard the sound of a wheelbarrow being pushed out of the yard.
Ncube said a few minutes later her son came rushing and informed her that his wife had a headache.
She said she went back to sleep assuming that Silindokuhle would be fine in the morning since it was just a headache.
However, when Ncube went to check on Silindokuhle the following morning, she found the girl lying on her bed covered in blood-soaked blankets. She said:

My son was also there in the same room and he told me that he was trying to discipline her for cheating on him with another man.
Upon checking Silindokuhle, I discovered that she was already dead.

Ncube said she immediately alerted neighbours who came to the homestead and community members effected a citizen arrest on Thandazani and escorted him to a police base in Stanmore leading to his arrest.
