The National Chairperson of South Africa’s ruling party, the African National Congress (ANC), Samson Gwede Mantashe, has warned that the current crisis at power utility Eskom may cause social unrest in the country.
On Saturday, Eskom escalated its rolling blackouts from Stage Four to Five due to what it called unusually high demand.
The electricity shortages were exacerbated by the breakdown of a generating unit each at Hendrina, Kendal, and Kriel power stations.
Earlier last week, Eskom had pushed up the rolling blackouts to Stage Six.
Mantashe, who is also South Africa’s Minister of Mineral Resources and Energy, was speaking at the Matla Coal Multi-purpose Hall outside Kriel in Mpumalanga. He said:

l am talking about a revolt. Eskom must do what it should do, technically they have the capacity to do it.

Mantashe Warns Severe Load Shedding May Cause Revolts

Zimbabwe’s Higher Education Minister Professor Jonathan Moyo has come out in defence of President Robert Mugabe. This was after African National Congress (ANC) Secretary General Gwede Mantashe responded to Mugabe’s remark that he had ‘stupidly reacted’ to his comments that his party had not liberated the blacks from economic oppression.
In Mugabe’s defence, Prof Moyo tweeted:

'President Mugabe did not insult anyone': Moyo responds to Mantashe

African National Congress (ANC) Secretary General Gwede Mantashe has responded to Zimbabwe’s President Robert Mugabe’s comments that he reacted stupidly to his comments that the late South African President Nelson Mandela compromised the black majority’s freedom for his own.

'Zimbabwe should be very thankful to us': Mantashe responds to Mugabe

Addressing members of the private sector at State House in Harare, President Robert Mugabe said that South Africa was not as free as other SADC countries.
Said Mugabe:
<blockquote>Gwede was foolishly reacting to what I had said. That’s it. It is true. South Africa is not as free as other countries. There is greater freedom for the whites than there is for the blacks. The whites have the industries, they can pride themselves, (saying) this is my company, that is my company, farm. How far can the Africans go in doing the same in South Africa? President Mugabe said as a revolutionary, he would continue making the remarks because Zimbabwe also fought against apartheid. They don’t want it said. We must say it because we went to war together. We assisted also in the fight against apartheid as indeed they also assisted us. We were assisting each other. We were in the same trenches, then our revolutionary objectives were different.</blockquote>
Mugabe’s remarks come after African National Congress (ANC)’s Secretary General Gwede Mantashe said that the Zanu-PF Government has ruined Zimbabwe’s economy.

Zimbabwe’s President Robert Mugabe has responded to African National Congress (ANC)’s secretary general Gwede Mantashe. Mantashe responded to Mugabe’s attacks on Nelson Mandela and said that the <a href="http://news.pindula.co.zw/2017/09/06/video-anc-secretary-general-gwede-mantashe-says-president-robert-mugabe-has-destroyed-the-zimbabwean-economy/#.WbGU7sig_IU">Zanu-PF Government had destroyed the Zimbabwean economy compared to the ANC Government whose policies have resulted in Zimbabwean and South African Billionaires</a>.

Video: Gwede Mantashe stupidly reacted: Mugabe responds to ANC SG

African National Congress (ANC) Secretary General Gwede Mantashe said he called Zanu-PF Secretary for Administration Ignatius Chombo to lodge a complaint over President Robert Mugabe‘s attacks on Nelson Mandela’s legacy.
At the last Zanu-PF rally in Midlands, Mugabe said that Mandela negotiated for his release and compromised a lot as a result. Said Mugabe:
<blockquote>When I asked someone in Zuma’s (SA President Jacob Zuma) administration why the whites still have so much power . .  he said “I ask your friend Mandela” as if Mandela was still alive . . . apparently Mandela negotiated with the whites by himself. Chaive chikuru kwaari yaive freedom yekubuda mujeri achikanganwa kuti zvikuru ndeizvo zvaakaendeserwa kujeri (Apparently Mandela viewed his release from jail as more important but forgetting about how he had been jailed in the first place).</blockquote>
Speaking during a press conference at the ANC headquarters at Luthuli House, Mantashe accused Mugabe of ruining Zimbabwe’s economy. He said contrary to Mugabe’s statements, the ANC had created a better life for the majority of South Africans.
