Two suspected hackers, Ngonidzashe Lison Dhubiyo (29) and Terrence Mashumba (38) appeared before Harare Magistrate Isheunesu Matova on Friday, facing charges of fraud and money laundering, reported <a href="https://www.newsday.co.zw/local-news/article/200038652/duo-in-court-for-defrauding-money-transfer-firm-of-us220k">NewsDay</a>.
The two are accused of hacking into the Forex Access system, a money transfer company, and fraudulently withdrawing US$220,000.
The complainant in the case is Access Forex (Pvt) Ltd, represented by auditor Patson Makina. The company specializes in sending and receiving money internationally.
Dhubiyo is employed by another money transfer firm in Mutare, while Mashumba works for the Ministry of Agriculture at Forbes Border Post in Mutare. The two accused persons were remanded in custody until Monday for bail consideration.
<h2>The Allegations</h2>
Prosecutor Rufaro Chonzi alleged that in January 2023, the two men, along with an accomplice named Tinashe Jonah Sithole (who is still at large), conspired to defraud Access Forex.
The accused gained unauthorised access to the company’s money remittance platform and created fake transactions that appeared to originate from the United Kingdom.
These transactions were processed and withdrawn by the accused, despite no actual money being sent from the UK.
Between January and October 2023, the accused sent the fraudulent funds to their personal mobile number accounts in Zimbabwe.
They then collected the money from Access Forex locations across the country. In total, they managed to send and collect US$220,065.
<h2>Proceeds of the Alleged Crime</h2>
After collecting the stolen money, the accused used it to buy vehicles and household electronics.
The fraud was discovered when Access Forex audited its system. The two suspects were arrested in Mutare, and two vehicles—a Toyota Hiace and a Nissan Note—purchased with the stolen funds were recovered.

Econet Wireless Zimbabwe has firmly denied claims that it had been hacked and that customer records containing sensitive information, such as full names, addresses, Twitter handles, and mobile numbers, were stolen and subsequently sold.
The allegations were made by cybersecurity watchdog FalconFeeds.io, which reported that over 852,000 customer records had been leaked. The group posted on X:

According to <a href="https://www.techzim.co.zw/2025/02/econet-refutes-data-breach-claims-says-no-hack-detected/">TechZim</a>, the alleged threat actor, identified as Thaihub, is said to have listed the stolen database for sale with a small charge of $299.
In recent days, several Econet subscribers reported being contacted by suspicious people on WhatsApp, leading them to suspect that their contact details might have been sourced from Thaihub’s purported leak.
However, in a statement to TechZim, Econet Wireless Zimbabwe reassured customers that it had thoroughly investigated the claims and found no evidence of a breach. The statement reads:

Econet Refutes Hack Claims And Data Breach

Social media personality Wicknell Chivayo, known for frequently flaunting his lavish lifestyle and donating vehicles to individuals with links to the ruling ZANU PF party, has spoken out against the alleged dissemination of purported screenshots of his private conversations on social media.
Over the past few days, several social media pages have been sharing what they claim to be leaked conversation screenshots from Chivayo’s Instagram account.
These screenshots reportedly reveal his private interactions with various individuals, including musicians Shashl and Kikky Badass, as well as Hadassah, the wife of preacher Ed Branson, and Anesu, the wife of preacher Evidence Chari.
The alleged chats with Hadassah, in particular, have garnered significant attention on social media due to their scandalous nature, reportedly involving declarations of love.
In a Facebook post on Saturday, Chivayo categorically denied the authenticity of these screenshots, claiming that they were fabricated by impersonators.
He asserted that the purported conversations were generated by individuals deliberately seeking to tarnish his reputation.
Chivayo’s source of wealth has long been a subject of public scrutiny, as he is known for flaunting the expensive cars and vehicles he has donated to people with connections to the ruling party, despite his wealth not being publicly known. He wrote:

I have DECISIVELY taken steps to engage the appropriate authorities and agents abroad, to assist in a forensic investigation on the MALCONTENTS and cyber-criminals behind these accounts and bring them to book.
Our local data and cyber protection laws also prohibit against such reprehensible conduct, particularly when it results in soiling the image of young innocent WOMEN and depict them as being of questionable moral.
I extend my DEEPEST APOLOGIES to all those individuals, known and unknown to me, who have been adversely affected by these FAKE messages and regret the damage that this may have caused them, their partners or families.

Wicknell Chivayo Says "Leaked" Social Media Screenshots Are Fake

Two men from Kambuzuma, Harare, allegedly hacked into mobile network provider, NetOne (Pvt) Limited’s system and stole more than ZiG1 million last month during the change-over from RTGS to the new currency.
As reported by <a href="https://www.newsday.co.zw/local-news/article/200028194/hackers-fleece-netone-during-transition-to-zig">NewsDay</a>, the suspects, Martin Learnmore Gona (31) and Uwen Gonyora (34) spent the weekend in police cells following their arrest on charges of fraud and money laundering.
They appeared before magistrate Dennis Mangosi on Monday, who remanded them in custody to this Thursday for a bail hearing.
NetOne was represented by its regional loss control officer Takaitei Chitekwe.
Prosecuting, Thomas Chanakira alleged that Gona and Gonyora connived and hacked into NetOne One Money wallet where they fraudulently transferred ZiG1 119 438 as phantom money to the former’s bank account.
The duo allegedly exploited a glitch that occurred on the NetOne OneMoney system during the ZWL$ to ZiG transition last month.
The court heard that the phantom money was then processed through Electronic Funds Transfer Corporation Zimbabwe, ZimSwitch and EcoCash being funded by NetOne Cellular OneMoney escrow account.
Gona and Gonyora allegedly made 545 transactions using the same method.
The State further submitted that after making the fraudulent transactions, the NetOne OneMoney account’s funds were depleted, leading to the bank settling the transactions.
Gona and Gonyora allegedly converted the proceeds to assets which are yet to be recovered, and only ZiG695 940 was recovered.

Hackers Steal ZiG1 Million From NetOne During Transition From RTGS

A 33-year-old Harare man allegedly hacked into an account belonging to Premier Tobacco Auction Floors and stole US$30 000.
According to <a href="https://www.newsday.co.zw/thestandard/news/article/200021358/harare-hacker-steals-us30k">NewsDay</a>, the suspect, Nyasha Mutasa, recently appeared before magistrate Dennis Mangosi charged with contravening the Cyber and Data Protection Act.
Mutasa was released on US$200 bail.
The complainant in the case is Premier Tobacco Auction Floors, which is represented by Takadiyi Blessing Dongo, a loss control officer.
The court heard that on 03 April 2023, Mutasa acting in connivance with his accomplices opened three Nostro accounts in the names of three persons namely Tarisai Katapi, Tadiwanashe Gandiwa and Pamela Sithole.
Prosecutor Grace Mugocheki further alleged that on 04 April, Mutasa hacked the complainant’s Steward Bank account and transferred US$20 000 into the accounts that he had opened.
As a result, the complainant suffered an actual prejudice of US$30 000.
The Cyber and Data Protection Act was enacted in 2021. Its primary objective is to boost cyber security and foster confidence in the secure use of information and communication technologies by data controllers, their representatives, and data subjects.

Hacker Steals US$30 000 From Premier Tobacco Auction Floors

A Kenyan national on Thursday appeared at the Harare Magistrates Court charged with hacking the Zimbabwe Manpower Development Fund (ZIMDEF) systems and stealing $20 million from its bank account.
The suspect, Primrose Nyeri Mwangi (40), is the director of Primkett Travels.
Mwangi appeared before magistrate Stanford Mambanje facing fraud charges.
The suspect was denied bail and returns to court this Friday.
Prosecutors told the court that in December 2022, Mwangi allegedly connived with Gerald Pondai and Prosper Hove, who are still at large, and hacked into the ZIMDEF database.
The suspects allegedly accessed ZIMDEF’s bank accounts.
They allegedly used the Zeepay ZimSwitch system and transferred $20 million from ZIMDEF into Maffkett Trading’s Steward Bank account.
The suspects further transferred various amounts into Atrier Engineering CBZ Bank, Newplaces (Pvt) Limited NBS Bank and Tavaka Holdings accounts.

Kenyan National Hacks Into ZIMDEF Database, Steals $20 Million

The Zimbabwe Electoral Commission (ZEC) on Wednesday accused a group of data analysts, Team Pachedu, of trying to hack into its system “about 100 times” and destabilise the country’s election processes.
Appearing before the Parliamentary Portfolio Committee on Justice and Legal Affairs for a post-budget consultation meeting, ZEC chief elections officer Utoile Silaigwana likened Team Pachedu’s alleged hacking attempts to attempted rape. Silaigwana said:

The Pachedu group has not been able to break into our system, but they have made several attempts.
They have maliciously spread a lot of disinformation, misinformation and malformation about the commission, which then in the public eye looks like ZEC is highly, highly vulnerable and they have broken into, but they have not.
I think it is some kind of silly manoeuvres to try to destabilise ZEC. The purpose of the commission reporting them is that this is an attempt.
If someone attempts to rape, it is an offence, right? So they are attempting to rape ZEC and this is why we reported them.
There have been about 100 attempts to hack into our server, which hosts the voters’ roll, but they have never broken into it.
Our website system is separate from the system that hosts the voters’ roll.

Team Pachedu says it has unearthed gross irregularities on the Voters’ Roll and has accused ZEC of attempting to rig the 2023 general elections.

Team Pachedu Attempting To Rape ZEC - Silaigwana

The Judicial Service Commission (JSC) says its official website was hacked recently and the hackers posted information that is “patently false and meant to mislead members of the public.”
In a statement issued on Monday, 21 November, JSC said information that has been shared by “Team Pachedu” purportedly taken from its website was posted by “intruders” and therefore false. Part of the statement reads:

It has come to our attention that there is a Twitter handle, @PacheduZW, operated by what is referred to as ‘Team Pachedu’ which has been sharing some information that they purport to have uplifted from the JSC website.
We wish to inform the public that the information they are sharing which they purport to have accessed through the JSC website is false. We state hereunder some of the false narratives;
Kudzanai Machemedze is not and has never been employed by the Judicial Service Commission.
He was studying towards a BSc Information Systems Honours Degree with the Midlands State University and he applied for Industrial attachment with the JSC on 5 May 2021.
He was on attachment as a student with the JSC from May 2021 to November 2021. He was a student on training, he, therefore, did not have the capacity at all to design or build websites, let alone be involved in JSC procurement processes.
During the COVID-19 era, there were travel restrictions imposed by the Government to contain, combat and prevent the spread of the COVID-19 pandemic.
Courts were declared essential services and members of staff were therefore required to go to work.
For ease of travel, members of the Judicial Service were issued with letters which they would produce to the authorities.
These letters were given in hard copy form and were never posted on the JSC website because they are not part of the regular information shared on the public domain by the JSC.
Whilst we are unable to confirm whether or not one such letter was issued to Mr Machemedze during his time of attachment, we are certain that no such letters were ever posted on our website as alleged.
The quotations and billing invoices which are being attributed to the JSC by Team Pachedu were allegedly issued in 2020.
Without admitting that they are genuine, these documents were issued well before Kudzanai Machemedze started his industrial attachment with the JSC in May 2021.
In any case, Kudzanai Machemedze was never engaged by the JSC as a software developer, neither did he participate in building the JSC website.
He was a student on training, he therefore did not have the capacity to execute such a task as alleged.
The Judicial Service Commission never procured any services for cyber security as alleged. Even if it did, the Judicial Service Commission follows laid down procurement processes which do not involve assigning students on attachment to do procurement on its behalf.
Procurement documents are delivered in hard copy form and subjected to rigorous procurement processes before they are submitted for payment through a Government payment system known as Paynet. This process and the documents thereto are not posted on the JSC website.
The allegations that we received and posted on our website an invoice of USD $119 450 for cyber security are therefore false.
Government through treasury never paid for the alleged USD$119 450.
The information purported to have been accessed on the JSC website by ‘Team Pachedu’ has not been accessed from official information on the JSC website but has been posted by ill-meaning intruders to spin their malicious narrative.
The contents of that information are patently false and meant to mislead members of the public.
The JSC has since launched full scale investigations into the unauthorized intrusion into its website.
Finally, we wish to assure members of the public that the Judicial Service Commission servers are secure.

Judicial Service Commission Says Its Official Website Was Hacked

The police officer investigating the case involving Vice President <a href="https://www.pindula.co.zw/Constantino_Chiwenga" rel="noopener noreferrer" target="_blank">Constantino Chiwenga</a>’s estranged wife, <a href="https://www.pindula.co.zw/Marry_Chiwenga" rel="noopener noreferrer" target="_blank">Marry Chiwenga</a> (nee Mubaiwa), had his WhatsApp account allegedly hacked resulting in his profile picture showing p_rnographic material.
Detective Assistant Inspector Luxon Saurowe’s WhatsApp account is alleged to have been hacked on Wednesday, and on Thursday he issued an apology to his contacts on his Facebook timeline. He wrote:
<blockquote>An apology to all my Econet WhatsApp contacts and family members and friends. My account is hacked and is displaying pornographic material on the profile picture. I am unable to access the account such that I may delete the account.</blockquote>
National Police Spokesperson Assistant Commissioner <a href="https://www.pindula.co.zw/Paul_Nyathi" rel="noopener noreferrer" target="_blank">Paul Nyathi</a> confirmed that indeed Saurowe’s account had been hacked but said the hacking has nothing to do with the Marry Chiwenga case.
Marry Chiwenga is accused of attempting to kill her husband, fraud, money laundering and externalisation of foreign currency and has been in custody since she was arrested in mid-December last year.
