The current midwives shortage in Zimbabwe has reportedly turned deadly as heartbreaking stories of birth complications and maternal deaths circulate on social media and other platforms, The Standard reports.
The sad situation has lead to other complications like other non-midwifery health workers delivering babies among other problems.  Inadequately equipped hospitals and a dire economic environment have reportedly driven other expectant mothers to go back to giving birth in the backyards of older women also known as Mbuya Nyamukuta.
Speaking about the current situation in his field, Zimbabwe Confederation of Midwives president Emmanuel Mahlangu said the situation is regrettable as he made a heartfelt plea to the government to adequately equip hospitals and maternity wards:
<blockquote>Our current situation is regrettable. The women of our nation deserve better.
The future generations in today’s newborns can be better protected. The overall prevailing economic environment, the Covid-19 pandemic and the pre-existing shortage of midwives coupled with low recognition have collectively left a demotivated and despairing midwifery workforce.</blockquote>
Mahlangu said burnouts were the order of the day in maternity wards as midwives were overworked due to a number of reasons:
<blockquote>The ongoing skills drain to local non-midwifery employment and international nursing jobs are a dark cloud on the maternity services. Burnout appears to be the order of the day in many maternity service centres in the country and more so in the capital city.</blockquote>
He also indicated that the midwives were also incapacitated to an extend:
<blockquote>Being in an environment where other women are able to make better income from any other ventures other than public health maternity services tends to create a midwifery workforce that is preoccupied with personal concerns more than the caring profession.
The nation needs to restore the dignity of the midwives, which will in turn bring protection to the health of the women, newborns and their families.</blockquote>
He urged the nation to change their mindset and do away with religious practices that put women in labour at risk:
<blockquote>All things being equal, such embarrassing incidents of women delivering outside health facilities should only exist in history textbooks.
We need, as a nation, to closely evaluate religious practices that put women at risk by encouraging delivery by non- trained personnel, late booking for maternity services and many child deaths.</blockquote>
Mahlangu decried the lack of resources and said:
<blockquote>We need to sanitise our health delivery services from repeated disruptions arising from human resource concerns.We need an enabling environment of adequate resources such as ambulances, equipment and consumables.
Regulations for midwifery should be updated to international standards and the profession has to be acknowledged as such. Families need to prepare well for pregnancy and make ready emergency plans for delivery.</blockquote>
Last year. <a href="https://zero.pindula.co.zw/seven-babies-stillborn-in-one-night-at-harare-hospital/">7 babies died during delivery in one of Harare’s hospitals</a> and the story went viral on social media and caused a public outcry as people urged the government to look into the matter.

Zimbabwe Hit By A Deadly Midwives Shortage

Seven babies were stillborn at Harare Hospital on Monday night after urgent treatment was delayed because of a shortage of staff.
Two doctors with direct knowledge of the situation at Harare Hospital confirmed to the BBC that on Monday night eight Caesarean section operations were performed. Seven of the babies were stillborn.
One doctor, speaking to BBC on condition of anonymity because he did not have official permission to talk to the media, said:
<blockquote>There was a very, very late intervention. Two of the mothers had ruptured uteruses and needed early operations. The other operations were done because of obstructed labour but were not done on time so the babies died, stuck in their mothers’ pelvises.</blockquote>
Another doctor told BBC that the situation at Harare’s two main public hospitals was dire, with only a handful of nurses and doctors at work because of a strike. The doctor said:
<blockquote>These are not isolated incidents. This is repeated every day and all we can do is watch them die. This is torture for the families, and for the junior doctors.</blockquote>
The doctors revealed that there is a serious shortage of PPE equipment as well as drugs to treat eclampsia, and blood supplies needed to treat haemorrhages during births.
They further revealed that Parirenyatwa Hospital and Harare Hospital are operating with skeletal nursing staff – mostly senior matrons who cannot go on strike. But they’re not able to cope.
Zimbabwe’s health delivery system has been crippled by corruption as multi-million dollar contracts were awarded to buy medical equipment at inflated prices.
The country does not have a health minister and a substantive permanent secretary as well as chief executive officers at its major hospitals.

Seven Babies Stillborn In One Night At Harare Hospital

Nurse educators (tutors) have announced that they will withdraw their services if the government fails to address nurses’ incapacitation as a matter of urgency.
In a statement issued following the arrest and harassment of nurses who were peacefully protesting at Harare Central Hospital on Monday, the Nurse Educators Association of Zimbabwe (NUAZ) demanded the immediate release of the 13 nurses within 24 hours. The statement read:
<blockquote>1. Today on the 6th of July 2020, NURSE EDUCATORS have learnt with deep shock the arrest of nurses after airing our collective grievances.
We, therefore, demand the immediate release of the arrested nurses within 24 hours The disease with our employer of dismissal and victimization of nurses should STOP Nurses like all citizens of Zimbabwe have a right to speak freely about their grievances without fear as enshrined in the constitution.
2. Following continuous bedridden silence from the employer in addressing our incapacitation, we as NURSE EDUCATORS, demand an immediate response from the employer as their infectious silence is spreading to the entire health services rendered by ALL nurses including STUDENT NURSES who need adequate attention from clinical staff without hiccups.
Failure to address the incapacitation ailment will lead to withholding of our services as the environment has increasingly proved to be difficult for standard quality practical learning.
3. NURSE EDUCATORS, as managers have been on standby rendering services, covering for the absence of junior nurses, and due to incapacitation, we do hereby also declare our inability to continue offering such services as we are overwhelmed with extra duties, and thus leading to paying less attention to the STUDENT NURSE whose expected standards and quality are being compromised.
Under the circumstances on the ground, the NURSE EDUCATORS are forced to join their colleagues if collective demands are not attended to as a matter of urgency.

Nurse Educators Demand Immediate Release Of 13 Nurses Arrested During Demo

A video that was recorded by Technomag shows ZRP officers arresting nurses at Harare Hospital for protesting. <a href="https://news.pindula.co.zw/2020/07/06/full-text-zimbabwe-nurses-association-on-the-arrest-of-nurses-at-harare-hospital-today/">Zimbabwe nurses association has already published a statement</a> condemning the nurses’ arrest.
Nurses were part of the health workers who withdrew their services last week citing incapacitation.

WATCH: ZRP Arresting Harare Hospital Nurses

A man believed to be 27 years old man who was attacked by suspected robbers including his friend and was seriously injured is stuck at Harare Hospital as he could not recall his surname since his admission at the hospital on 9 March 2020, ZBC News reports.
The man only identified as Takudzwa or Sipho cannot be discharged as the hospital does not know who to discharge him to.  This was revealed by Mr Rutendo Makoni who is a nurse at the hospital who spoke to the publication and said:
<blockquote>This man is around 27 years of age. He was admitted while unconscious sometime in March. There are indications that he was robbed and beaten until he became unconscious. He has not been able to regain his memory – he only managed to tell us his name and it is different from the one we were given by the people who brought him to hospital. The people who brought him here said his name is Takudzwa but he sometimes tells us that his name is Sipho,
The people who brought him here claimed that he is from Hopley and that is where he met his fate, but we do not have the exact address. What is even more confusing is that he talks about many places like Kwekwe among others as his place of residence</blockquote>
However speculation is rife that one of Takudzwa’s friends is one of the robbers who attacked him, but no one at the hospital really knows the truth about Takudzwa, and the hospital has said the man is in need of physiotherapy.

27 Year Old Man Stuck At Harare Hospital After Losing His Memory - Report

The capital’s second-largest referral hospital, the <a href="https://www.pindula.co.zw/Harare_Central_Hospital">Sally Mugabe Hospital(Harare Hospital)</a> is operating at 45% Newsday reports. The matter came to light during a tour by a parliamentary committee chaired by <a href="https://www.pindula.co.zw/Ruth_Labode">Ruth Labode</a>.
The hospital CEO spoke to the publication during the tour and said:
<blockquote>Normally, our bed occupancy is between 50% to 70%, but due to industrial action we dropped to even less than 20%, but as we speak we are at 45%
Besides those who are admitted at the hospital, which is around 700 patients, we see 1 700 patients in casualty and after the industrial action some departments are about to open.</blockquote>
According to the publication, the hospital is battling water problems and it is also understaffed.

The University of Zimbabwe has succumbed to pressure and rehired paediatric surgeon Dr Bothwell Mbuwayesango and senior cardiothoracic surgeon, Dr David Chimuka recently suspended for allegedly leading doctors’ demonstrations.
In a twist of events, the top academic learning institution in the country on Wednesday backtracked on its decision after other lecturers at its Medical School threatened to stop taking classes.
A joint statement signed by the Vice-Chancellor of the University, Professor Paul Mapfumo and Zimbabwe Medical Association (ZiMA) secretary-general Dr Sacrifice Chirisa said:
<blockquote>Following these deliberations and further submissions by representatives of the Surgical Department of the University of Zimbabwe, the parties resolved that… the university reconsiders its action in light of further information availed and submissions made during the discussions.</blockquote>
The suspension had been widely condemned by many within and beyond the medical fraternity. Zimbabwe Hospital Doctors Association had said that surgical training was going to suffer because of the suspensions.
Dr Mbuwayesango made headlines after leading a team that successfully separated conjoined twins in 2014 during an eight-hour operation at Harare Hospital.

University Of Zimbabwe Backtracks, Rehires Top Surgeons

A pair of five-day-old twins were burnt to death in an open cradle at Harare Central Hospital last week. The hospital is still carrying out investigations, but negligence is suspected. The twins were reportedly placed in an isolation ward as they were recovering from jaundice. They were placed in an open cradle and a beam of light was used to provide heating. However, something malfunctioned and the babies were dehydrated and burnt to death. Their mother, Belinda Balalika found the babies dead when she went to breastfeed them at midnight. A source who spoke to The Standard said,
<blockquote>Something malfunctioned and the babies were burnt to death, but what is saddening is the fact that the staff did not check on the babies on time.</blockquote>
Harare Central Hospital CEO Nyasha Masuka added,
<blockquote>We will be able to give details on Monday when all the investigations have been completed.</blockquote>
