A Rugare Primary School headmistress has appeared in court on allegations of stealing the school’s timber and asbestos sheets.
Investigations established that she planned to use the asbestos and timber to build a fowl run at her residence, <a href="https://www.herald.co.zw/headmistress-up-for-theft/">The Herald</a> reports.
Calister Tarisai Matsitsiro (58) was facing theft charges when she appeared before a Harare magistrate.
<h2>What happened:</h2>
The court heard that on August 18, 2022, Tarisai Matsitsiro went to a grade 7 class and requested some students to go and load 22×3.6 metres of endurite asbestos sheets and 5×6 metres of pine timber onto the school bus.
It is alleged that during the loading of the asbestos and timber Themba Mangwiro who is the deputy Headmaster inquired as to where the asbestos and timber were being taken to and was told they were being taken to the school head’s residence in Rugare for use in the construction of a fowl run.
It was later established that the timber and asbestos were taken without the approval of the school SDA.
The magistrate remanded her out of custody on free bail.

Headmistress In Court For Theft Of School Property

A human rights lawyers based in Harare was on Friday detained by police while representing clients at the Harare Magistrates’ Court and later released without a charge.
The lawyer, Webster Jiti, was accused of undermining police authority by making “noise in the corridors”.
Jiti was in court to represent Takudzwa Ngadziore, leader of the Zimbabwe National Students Union (ZINASU), and Tapiwa Chiriga, who are accused of violating COVID-19 restrictions.
The Law Society of Zimbabwe (LSZ) condemned police’s “unwarranted” “heavy-handedness” saying lawyers should be allowed to work without interference. LSZ president Wellington Magaya told ZimLive:
<blockquote>I am yet to get the full details but the heavy-handedness on the part of the police is unwarranted.
A lawyer is an officer of the court and must never be arrested for doing their work. Lawyers must be allowed to operate independently and without interference.
We are also tracking another matter in which a lawyer Tendekai Hove of Hove Legal Practice was arrested for acting on his client’s instructions.</blockquote>
The Zimbabwe Lawyers for Human Rights (ZLHR), whose attorneys are leading the charge against state-sponsored human rights violations, also criticized Jiti’s detention.

Human Rights Lawyer Webster Jiti Detained, Freed Without Charge

Freelance journalist Kumbirai Mafunda was on Friday arrested by police while conducting his lawful duties at the Harare Magistrates Court.
Mafunda, who is the Zimbabwe Lawyers for Human Rights (ZLHR) Communications Officer, was later freed without aa charge after the intervention of lawyers Tinashe Chinopfukutwa and Jeremiah Bamu.
Posting on Twitter, ZLHR Executive Director Roselyn Hanzi said the wanton detention, arbitrary arrest or harassment of journalists must be condemned. <a href="https://twitter.com/rose_hanzi/status/1365261921075818497" rel="noopener" target="_blank">She wrote:</a>
<blockquote>Very disturbed and appalled that [police] have arrested our [Zimbabwe Lawyers for Human Rights] Communications Officer who is a registered free-lance journalist [Kumbirai Mafunda]. He was at Rottenrow court covering our cases.
Our Comms Focal [Mafunda] has since been released without charge after the intervention of [ZLHR] Tinashe Chinopfukutwa and Jeremiah Bamu.
The wanton detention, arbitrary arrest or harassment of journalists must be strongly condemned by everyone.</blockquote>
This is not the first time journalists have been harassed while conducting their duties during the coronavirus-induced lockdown.

Sipuma was stopped by the security officers at the Kuwadzana roundabout in Harare while on his way to Chegutu to report on Zimbabwe’s 21-day COVID-19 lockdown.

2 RBZ employees who reportedly leaked the bank’s de-dollarisation roadmap Smart Manda and Philton Makena have appeared before Harare Magistrate Mrs Vongai Muchuchuti-Guwuriro charged with communicating official documents to unauthorised persons, The Herald reports.
It is the state’s case that:
<blockquote>Manda forwarded the document to Makena via whatsapp and inturn Makena sent it to his cousin Bongani Zimuto.
Zimuto, the court heard, forwarded the same document to his boss who works at Zimnat Life Assurance and therefore went viral on social media platforms.</blockquote>
The 2 are out on $2000 bail each and they will be back in court on 3 June.

RBZ Economists Who Leaked The Banks' De-Dollarisation Roadmap Appear In Court

3 Indian family members and a Zimbabwean have appeared before a Harare Magistrate on charges of defrauding a British national his £67 400 in a scam involving their travel agent.
It is the state’s case that the 4, Musa Ahmed Yousaf (83), former director of Carefree Travel, Musa Akil Yousaf (51), Yousaf Aisha Musa (80), former managing director of Carefree Travel, as well as Rutendo Berejena (44) in September 2017 made the complaint Mohammed Ahmed. to believe that their Travel agent, needed capital in order to finance a facility which they claimed to have with Emirates Airlines.
The facility they told Ahmed would enable them to sell tickets to their customers at a discount, Ahmed injected his £67 400 into their travel agency and lost all his money and never recovered anything.

3 Indian Family Members Involved In A Travel Agency Scam

The State has successfully applied for the postponement of the hearing date for civil society leaders who were arrested and charged with intentions to subvert a constitutional government.
The trial date has now been set for January 7, 2020.
In his application for postponement, prosecutor Mr Charles Muchemwa argued that investigations were still underway. The application reads in part:
<blockquote>We would have placed our house in order on the next remand date, if the State fails to provide the accused with a trial date after this long remand, they will be removed from remand.</blockquote>
Harare magistrate Mrs Learnmore Mapiye remanded the matter saying that the court was giving the State the last chance to furnish the accused with the new trial date.
The accused allegedly travelled to the Maldives, where they are said to have undergone a training workshop organised by a Serbian non-governmental organisation, the Centre for Applied Nonviolent Action and Strategies (CANVAS), with the intent to subvert a constitutionally elected Government.

State Applies For Further Remand Of Civil Society Leaders Facing Subversion

A former clerk at the Harare Magistrates’ court Mboko Edmore Rugare was on Wednesday sentenced to 12 months in prison for contravening the Marriage Act after presiding over weddings, masquerading as a marriage officer.
Rugare was however jailed to an effective nine months after three months were suspended on condition of good behaviour.
It was the State’s case that Rugare impersonated magistrate Olivia Mariga and duly performed the marriage ceremony of Karen Kokore and her husband Egomole Calistus Okechukwu before issuing them a marriage certificate.
The offence came to light on December 15, 2014, when Kokore initiated a divorce process and her marriage certificate could not be located.

Former Clerk Of Court Jailed Over Bogus Marriages

A Harare and married woman, Shorai Jaricha, 22, appeared before the Harare Magistrate, Rumbidzai Mugwagwa yesterday for allegedly intentionally infecting a minor with a Sexually Transmitted Infection (STI).
It is alleged that the accused unlawfully and intentionally infected Tashinga Runganga, 17, with an STI in 2018. It is also alleged that Runganga used to visit the accused at her house to talk. One day, when the husband of the accused was not around, the accused is alleged to have seduced the minor and they had sexual intercourse. This became a norm from that day forward for as long the accused’s husband was not around.
The minor is believed to have started discharging whitish fluids in January this year. He took medication, but, when he stopped, the issue reappeared. He then informed his mother and the matter was reported to the police leading to the arrest of Jaricha.

Married Woman In Court For Infecting Minor With STIs

The trial of Joanna Mamombe at the magistrate’s Court on Monday opened a can of worms as it revealed that the arresting officer was not a policeman after all.
The witness and arresting officer, Dennis Muroyiwa, failed to name his immediate bosses at the department he works for at the police’s Law and Order section when asked by Mamombe’s lawyer Obey Shava.
Muroyiwa produced his identity document which did not have a picture of his face which he claimed was wiped off by sweat.
Mamombe is facing treason charges. Harare magistrate Rumbidzai Mugwagwa postponed the matter to (Tuesday) today for a ruling.
