A Gold Class bus travelling from Harare to Rusape, carrying 53 students and seven staff members from Chipinge Junior Primary School, was involved in an accident on Friday afternoon along the Harare-Mutare Road.
According to a statement from Zimbabwe Republic Police (ZRP) spokesperson Commissioner Paul Nyathi, the bus driver lost control while attempting to overtake a haulage truck at the 165 km peg. The bus veered off the road to the right, overturned, and came to rest on its left side.
Tragically, one female adult died at the scene, while twenty-five students and six adults sustained injuries and were transported to Rusape General Hospital for treatment. Said Commissioner Nyathi:

The Zimbabwe Republic Police reports a fatal road traffic accident which occurred on 01st November 2024 at around 1345 hours, involving a Gold Class bus which was travelling from Harare to Rusape carrying 53 students and seven school staff members from Chipinge Junior Primary School.
On approaching the 165 km peg along Harare-Mutare Road, the driver tried to overtake a haulage truck, due to speeding, he lost control of the bus.
The bus veered off the road to the right side, overturned and landed on its left side facing the northern direction.
The Zimbabwe Republic Police has established that one female adult died on the spot. 25 students and six adults were injured. They have been taken to Rusape General Hospital for treatment.

Commissioner Nyathi also urged drivers to exercise caution and avoid speeding and overtaking in situations which are clearly not safe to do so.

The Zimbabwe Republic Police (ZRP) has released the names of people who died in a road traffic accident which occurred along Harare-Mutare Road, near Marondera on 27th December 2023. Five people were killed while 36 others were injured when a Blue Horizon bus, haulage truck and Mercedes Benz collided. In a statement seen by Pindula News, police spokesperson, Assistant Commissioner Paul Nyathi said:

Reference is made to the Zimbabwe Republic Police press statement released on 27th December 2023 on the fatal road traffic accident which occurred at the 64 kilometre peg along Harare-Mutare Road, Marondera on 27th December 2023 where five people were killed while 36 others were injured when a Blue Horizon bus, haulage truck and Mercedes Benz collided.
The Police releases the names of four of the five victims who were identified by their next of kin as listed:-

Meanwhile, three people died in a car accident that happened on December 28, 2023, at around 11:00 am along the Harare-Chirundu Road in Zimbabwe. 11 passengers were injured. The accident occurred when a kombi driver tried to overtake another vehicle. The kombi veered off the road, flipped over once, and landed on its wheels. The injured passengers were taken to Chinhoyi Provincial Hospital for treatment.
Nyathi said ZRP is deeply saddened by the loss of lives in road accidents and reminds all drivers to be careful and prioritize safety to prevent such tragedies.

Police Names Victims Of Marondera Accident

Seven people died, while four others sustained injuries in a tragic road accident on the Harare-Mutare Road. According to a police report obtained by Pindula News, the accident involved a collision between a Honda Fit and a VW Touareg vehicle. The Zimbabwe Republic Police (ZRP) yesterday said further information will be provided at a later time. Read the report.

The ZRP reports a fatal road traffic accident which occurred at the 60 kilometre peg along Harare-Mutare Road on 30/08/23 in which seven victims died while four others were injured.
A Honda Fit vehicle with eight passengers on board had a head on collision with a VW Toures which had one passenger on board. More details will be released in due course.

Some social media users have criticised the police, holding them responsible for the accident and alleging that they turn a blind eye to illegal public transportation vehicles known as “Mshika shika.”
They argue that it is unacceptable the Honda Fit involved in the accident, which typically seats up to five people, was carrying eight passengers. They presume that the vehicle may have passed through multiple police checkpoints but was allowed to pass due to alleged bribery. 
The increase of “Mishka shika” vehicles in Zimbabwe can be attributed to limited public transportation options, high unemployment rates, flexibility in routes and schedules, and weak regulation and enforcement. These informal vehicles fill the gap in areas with inadequate formal transportation services. Addressing the issue requires improving public transportation infrastructure, promoting formal employment, enhancing regulation and enforcement, and prioritising commuter safety.

Seven Dead, Four Injured In Tragic Harare-Mutare Road Accident

Eight (8) people died in three separate road accidents which occurred on Friday the 16th and Saturday the 17th of December 2022.
In a report seen by Pindula News, the Zimbabwe Republic Police (ZRP) said the accidents happened along Bulawayo – Beitbridge Road, Masvingo – Beitbridge Road and Harare Mutare Road. Reads the statement:

The ZRP reiterates that drivers should exercise caution when driving on the roads. On 17/12/22, ZRP Gwanda recorded a fatal road traffic accident which occurred at the 92 km peg along Bulawayo-Beitbridge Road where a motorist driving a Toyota Quest vehicle towards Bulawayo, with six passengers on board, encroached onto the oncoming lane resulting in a collision with a Scania Irza bus which was travelling towards Beitbridge and a Mazda Sedan vehicle, with five passengers on board, travelling towards Bulawayo. Four passengers who were in the Toyota Quest car died on the spot, while five people were injured. 
In another case, two people died in a road traffic accident where a motorist driving a Renault Chendero vehicle collided with a bus after trying to overtake the bus while there was an oncoming vehicle at the 60 km peg along Masvingo- Beitbridge Road on 17/12/22 at 0700 hours. 
Similarly, on 16/12/22 at 1920 hours, two people died when a motorist driving a Freightliner truck lost control of the vehicle and encroached onto the oncoming lane where the truck crashed four vehicles, a Toyota Raum, Toyota Vitz, Nissan Caravan, and a Toyota Landcruiser Prado. The accident occurred along Harare- Mutare Road, near NOIC Mabvuku.

Accidents usually increase during the festive season as travellers will be hurrying to reach their destinations. Some motorists will be drunk increasing the chances of human error.
