The National Arts Council of Zimbabwe (NACZ) has approached Government seeking conferment of national hero status on music icon Oliver Mtukudzi.
Mtukudzi died yesterday afternoon at the Avenues Clinic in Harare where he had been admitted in the intensive care unit. He was 66. NACZ director Nicholas Moyo, who was among the mourners at Mtukudzi’s home last night confirmed they had approached Government and said deliberations had started. Said Moyo:
<blockquote>We have approached the Government with our request for Tuku to be considered for national hero status. The formal procedures have started and we are here to talk to the family so that we get the ball rolling. It would be great to have him as the first artiste to get such honour. He deserves the status because of his hard work and leadership in the sector.</blockquote>
Speaking at Mtukudzi’s home in Norton last night, Youth, Sport, Arts and Recreation Minister Kirsty Coventry confirmed the deliberations over Tuku’s status. She said Mtukudzi deserves a special honour.

Declare Oliver Mtukudzi A National Hero- National Arts Council Urges Mnangagwa Govt

Addressing supporters during a rally, Buhera South legislator Joseph Chinotimba (Zanu-PF) said former President Robert Mugabe will not be buried at the National Heroes Acre for “selling out”.
Chinotimba’s comments come after reports that Mugabe is behind the formation of the Ambrose Mutinhiri-led National Patriotic Front (NPF). Said Chinotimba:
<blockquote>If Mugabe and (National Patriotic Front leader Ambrose) Mutinhiri have sold out, then they are not fit to go to the national shrine. There are lots of people he denied the honour because he was in charge and was calling the shots. Sithole was denied the honour because he sold out during the war. Mugabe has sold out, he will not be buried there.</blockquote>

When contacted for comment, Zanu-PF spokesperson Simon Khaya Moyo told NewsDay that the party will only comment on the matter when Mugabe dies. Chinotimba yesterday confirmed the utterances, warning Mugabe that he is playing with fire by making <a href="https://news.pindula.co.zw/2018/03/11/mugabe-demanding-to-be-paid-pension-in-cash-as-always-received-his-salary-of-20-000-month-in-cash/">demands which include asking for his pension in cash at a time when Zimbabwe is going through a cash crisis</a>. Chinotimba added that if Mugabe is no longer supporting Zanu PF, then he must lose all benefits.

Zanu-PF said it will decide on Dr Timothy Stamps’ hero status based on recommendations coming from the Office of the President and Cabinet.
The former Health and Childcare Minister succumbed to a lung infection on Sunday afternoon at Borrowdale Trauma Centre in Harare. Zanu-PF spokesperson Simon Khaya Moyo said that they were still waiting to hear from the Office of the President and Cabinet. Said Khaya Moyo:
<blockquote>As a party we cannot take the lead in discussing the hero status because Dr Stamps was Health Advisor to the President and Cabinet. It would be proper to hear what the Chief Secretary to the President and Cabinet has to say.</blockquote>

Zanu-PF to decide Dr Stamps' hero status

Speaking to The Herald, Zanu-PF Chief Whip, Gutu Central legislator Lovemore Matuke said the Zanu-PF leadership in Masvingo will meet to formally request national heroine status for Amai Maud Muzenda.
Said Matuke:
<blockquote>I have just received the sad news of the passing on of Ambuya Muzenda but there is nothing much that we can say at the moment until we meet together with the chairman Cde Ezra Chadzamira so that we can write to the national leadership requesting national heroine status for her.</blockquote>
Amai Muzenda passed on at the Avenues Clinic in Harare after battling ill-health for some time. Mourners are gathered at 43 Lewisam Avenue in Chisipite Harare.

Masvingo to request national heroine status for Amai Maud Muzenda

Speaking to The Herald, Zanu-PF Masvingo chairperson Ezra Chadzamira said they had made a request to the party leadership for Shuvai Mahofa to be declared a national heroine.
Said Chadzamira:
<blockquote>We have met this morning (yesterday) and unanimously agreed that Cde Mahofa be accorded national heroine status for the sterling work that she did in Masvingo province and Zimbabwe. We are waiting for a response from the national leadership of Zanu-PF.</blockquote>
