South Africa’s Border Management Authority (BMA) has arrested a kombi driver allegedly trying to smuggle undocumented Zimbabwean children into the country through the Beitbridge port of entry.
According to BMA spokesperson Mmemme Mogotsi, the minibus taxi driver was carrying 25 undocumented foreigners when he was intercepted on Monday.
The passengers included 20 children aged between five and 14, who were unlawfully transported under dangerous and inhuman conditions. Said Mogotsi:

The vehicle used was impounded. The driver has been charged and is in police custody and a conveyance fine of R375,000 has been issued in accordance with the Immigration Act.
Following standard protocols, the children were handed over to the Zimbabwean child welfare authorities for their safety and care while investigations continued.

BMA acting commissioner Jane Thupana stated that the operation underscores the BMA’s commitment to dismantling criminal networks that exploit vulnerable individuals, especially children. She said:

The trafficking and smuggling of people undermines human dignity and border security and the BMA remains vigilant in its efforts to safeguard South Africa’s ports of entry and protect those at risk.
</blockquote>
The commissioner said the BMA will continue to work closely with other law enforcement agencies to combat illegal activities.

South African Kombi Driver Arrested For Smuggling Children From Zimbabwe

More than 40 Zimbabweans are reportedly stranded in Sierra Leone after being lured to the West African nation with promises of lucrative jobs by a local company working with a foreign entity.
It is alleged that upon arriving in Freetown, the capital of Sierra Leone, the group discovered that the jobs they were promised did not exist, leaving them in a desperate situation.
Authorities have classified the stranded Zimbabweans as victims of human trafficking.
A government official, speaking on the condition of anonymity, told <a href="https://www.herald.co.zw/traffickers-leave-40-locals-stranded-in-sierra-leone/">The Herald</a> that seven of the Zimbabweans managed to return home last week, while another four were expected to arrive on Tuesday but did not show up. Said the official:

These people were duped into going to that country; they went with the promise of jobs but got a raw deal.
Investigations are still underway, but it seems there is a lot of negotiation taking place to release our citizens.
This issue has been silent. There is a push to release more citizens.

Another official from the Social Welfare Department within the Ministry of Public Service, Labour and Social Welfare told The Herald that the identities of the human trafficking victims will remain confidential. Said the official:

I have just been informed that the identities of human trafficking victims are protected and cannot be published.
I have received several inquiries about this issue, but after consulting with relevant authorities, I have been advised that the victims are protected under the Human Trafficking Act.
I have been told that even when the victims return home, their relatives will not be informed of their arrival, as this could potentially compromise their safety and the concern is that human trafficking rings may attempt to track down and re-traffick the victims.

Simon Masanga, the Permanent Secretary for Public Service, Labour and Social Welfare, confirmed that the victims have not yet arrived.
He also revealed that a well-wisher is sponsoring the victims, and the government has launched an investigation into the matter.

Over 40 Zimbabweans Stranded In Sierra Leone After Job Scam

A 16-year-old mother and her mother, Evelyn Zisengwe, allegedly conspired to sell the newborn baby for US$180 to a woman called Dion Tore, whom they had met in a WhatsApp group, for adoption.
As reported by <a href="https://www.hmetro.co.zw/newly-born-baby-sold-for-us180-recorded-as-dead-at-birth-in-chilling-case-of-illegal-adoption/">H-Metro</a>, the teen mother’s name has been withheld, although she used the alias Nobuhle Sibanda during the illicit transaction.
The three have since been arrested and appeared in court on Monday to face human trafficking charges. They were remanded in custody to Thursday for bail considerations.
It is alleged that in January 2024, the trio planned to traffic Sibanda’s nine-month-old baby through unlawful adoption.
Zisengwe reportedly informed Tore that her daughter was pregnant but intended to abort the child. Tore, who claimed to have experienced persistent miscarriages, expressed a desire to adopt the baby.
According to court documents, Zisengwe contacted Sibanda, who was pregnant at the time, and they arranged to meet on February 22. T
ore allegedly facilitated a scan of the unborn child, confirming it was a baby girl and that the pregnancy was seven months and three weeks along.
They then went to Sally Mugabe Hospital, where they colluded with an unidentified nurse to arrange a premature delivery. Tore provided false personal details to Harare Hospital officials, pretending to be the expectant mother.
Sibanda delivered the baby prematurely on February 25 and handed her over to Tore on March 5 at Harare Hospital.
Subsequently, Tore created a fake death record, claiming that Sibanda had given birth but that the child had passed away.
Between May and August, Zisengwe reportedly received a total of US$180 from Tore, with the payments sent via Ecocash. The trio was arrested following a tip-off to the police in Murehwa.

16-Year-Old Mother Sells Newborn Baby For US$180

A woman from Gokwe who sold her baby two days after giving birth has been jailed for 10 years.
As reported by <a href="https://www.hmetro.co.zw/mom-from-hell-jailed-as-grim-details-emerge-that-sold-baby-was-to-be-trafficked-to-australia/">H-Metro</a>, Pauline Maganga (23) was found guilty of human trafficking by Harare regional magistrate Lazini Ncube who ruled that there were no special circumstances to consider. Said the magistrate:

The victim is a child in this case and the offender is a parent. The offence was committed in aggravating circumstances and there were no special circumstances to consider.
She had the duty to keep and protect this child but she chose to commodify the child for the purpose of trafficking.
In this modern world, no person should be sold. We have passed the slave trade era. She should have given up the child for adoption in a legal manner if she was really poor.
There were prior plans to commit the crime as there was prior communication before she had even given birth so she knew what she was doing, even joining the WhatsApp group that connected her to the buyer shows that this was a premeditated crime.
The court has no choice but to impose the mandatory sentence of 10 years.

Prosecuting, Tendai Tapi said in May 2023, Maganga, who was pregnant, in South Africa, met Janet Marimo, through a WhatsApp group.
The two women reached an agreement that Maganga was to sell her baby for R25 000.
On June 24, 2024, Maganga gave birth at Far East Rand Hospital, Krugersrus Springs, Johannesburg, South Africa and she informed Marimo, through their usual WhatsApp communication.
Two days later, Marimo travelled from Port Elizabeth and was handed the baby and its clinic card.
Maganga received part of the payment and the two agreed to feed the baby as Marimo waited for the baby’s birth record.
She, however, failed to obtain the birth record.
On July 4, Marimo left Johannesburg for Port Elizabeth, with the baby and booked the bus using Maganga’s name, to avoid being intercepted by the police.
The two women remained in touch as they needed the birth record for the baby by October 29 to process travel documents as the child was meant to be taken to Australia.
After failing to secure the baby’s documents, Marimo smuggled the baby to Zimbabwe.
She was arrested in Waterfalls, Harare, on November 27 following a tip-off.
After hearing of Marimo’s arrest, Maganga travelled to Zimbabwe on December 12 to claim her child.
Investigations revealed that she had declared her child dead a few days after delivery.
A DNA test was conducted and proved that she was the child’s bilogical mother leading to her arrest.

Gokwe Woman (23) Jailed 10 Years For Selling Her Baby For R25, 000

Two female members of an apostolic sect led by Madzibaba Ishmael Chokurongerwa on Thursday appeared in court facing trafficking charges, <a href="https://www.zimlive.com/duo-locked-up-for-harbouring-witnesses-to-jailed-cult-leaders-crimes/">reported ZimLive</a>.
The two, Danai Tigere (56), and Veronica Chitanda (40), were allegedly caught harbouring nine females believed to be key witnesses in the case which resulted in the arrest of Madzibaba Ishmael recently.
Tigere and Chitanda appeared before Harare magistrate Donald Ndirowei and were not asked to plead. They were granted US$50 each.
They were back in court on Friday, April 12, for bail application in the other case.
Prosecuting, Anesu Chirenje said that on March 13 this year, Chokurongerwa and seven accomplices were arrested by the police for contravening the Burial and Cremation Act and Children’s Act at Plot number 6 Lily Farm in Nyabira.
He further alleged that on March 28, police received information that the two were hiding victims suspected to be from Chokurongerwa’s sect house number 40 Ngamera Street, Mufakose Harare. Said the State prosecutor:

On March 29, at 3 AM, a raid was conducted at Tigere’s residence where Previous Zogara, 20, Precious Tichaona, 20, Memory Matanga, 19, Rulendo Chimuti, 24, Vimbai Mufani, 21, Melody Chirinda, 20, Nomusa Tichaona, 18, and two minors were rescued by the police.

When questioned, the pair could not provide a satisfactory explanation on why they were keeping the nine.

Two Women Arrested For Harbouring Witnesses In Madzibaba Ishmael's Alleged Crimes

A suspended police officer and his niece have been convicted of trafficking three women to Oman where they were turned into sex slaves.
According to <a href="https://www.hmetro.co.zw/suspended-cop-jailed-for-trafficking-women-to-oman/">H-Metro</a>, Forward Mashonganyika and his niece, Tendai Muswe, were convicted after a full trial by Harare regional magistrate Estere Chivasa on Wednesday, 06 March.
Muswe is currently serving three years in prison for a similar offence.
In her ruling, magistrate Chivasa said the State had proved their case beyond reasonable doubt.
The magistrate said the three women proved to be credible witnesses. She said:

Besides facilitating the trafficking from Zimbabwe to Oman, the other issue is that there must be evidence of deceitfulness. Several things aren’t in dispute.
According to their defence, the three women stayed at Mashonganyika’s place of residence once and it’s not in dispute that they travelled to Oman.
They were excited to fly for the first time and, when they flew, they believed they were flying to Dubai to work in hotels and restaurants. It’s not in dispute that they went to Oman, not Dubai.

The magistrate said the trafficked women were enslaved, assaulted, denied food and salaries, denied rest, and sexually assaulted in Oman before being deported to Zimbabwe. She said:
<blockquote>
It’s not in dispute that they were allocated to work as slaves and none of the two is denying that they were enslaved, assaulted, denied food and salaries, denied rest, sexually assaulted and deported back to Zimbabwe.
The only thing in dispute is whether they facilitated their trafficking to Oman and they denied any involvement, but the State led evidence from several witnesses and I listened carefully to how they were linking the duo to the trafficking.
The evidence was cemented by that of the investigating officer through whom documents of money they received from Mohamed Ali in Oman were tendered.

Suspended Police Officer Jailed For Trafficking Women To Oman

A 41-year-old Zimbabwean woman’s incarceration in a South African jail continues after her bail application was postponed to next week for further argument in court.
According to <a href="https://www.sabcnews.com/sabcnews/trafficking-court/">SABC News</a>, the Investigating Officer in the case told the Kimberley Magistrate’s Court in the Northern Cape that the woman was a flight risk.
The woman, whose identity has not been revealed, was arrested in December 2023, alongside a 46-year-old man after they were seen travelling with 14 undocumented children on a bus from Midrand to Cape Town.
The investigating officer told the court that the accused’s travel documents did not correspond with the dates on her passport.
She further stated that the Zimbabwean woman is a flight risk as she does not have a valid home address in South Africa and might flee the country if released on bail.
The officer also testified that the 14 children would also be in danger if the woman was released.
The defence is expected to continue with their arguments next week and the accused remains in custody.
The woman, and a man also reported to be Zimbabwean, were found on a long-distance bus with undocumented minors in their company – eight boys and six girls aged six to 14 years.

Zimbabwean Woman Accused Of Child Trafficking In South Africa Remanded In Custody

Two Zimbabwean nationals were set to appear in the Kimberley Magistrate’s Court in South Africa today, 7 December, on charges of human trafficking.
The suspects were found on a long-distance bus with undocumented minors in their company – eight boys and six girls aged six to 14 years.
The Zimbabwean nationals, comprising a man and a woman, were arrested by a multi-disciplinary team comprising of Hawks Serious Organised Crime Investigation, Kimberley Family Violence, Child Protection and Sexual Offences (FCS) Unit and Kimberley Crime Prevention, according to Hawks spokesperson, Lt Col. Tebogo Thebe.
<a href="https://www.news24.com/news24/community-newspaper/noordkaapbulletin/two-charged-with-kidnapping-after-14-undocumented-minors-found-on-bus-in-kimberley-20231207">News24</a> reported Thebe as saying the suspects in the latest case, a male (46) and female (41) were seen boarding a bus in Midrand with the children. Said Thebe:

Police were alerted to the incident by a vigilant passenger on the bus en route to Cape Town.
The bus made a stopover in Kimberley and the passenger called an off-duty police officer who in turn alerted the multi-disciplinary team for investigation and arrest.
The suspects claimed to be taking the kids to their parents in Cape Town, information the police could not verify leading to the arrests.
The victims (children) were inspected and looked dirty without any additional clothes or bags and looked hungry.
The Provincial Trafficking in Persons Rapid Response Team, led by the Department of Social Development, was contacted to assist with placing the kids in a place of safety and providing them with food.

According to unverified claims made on social media, the concerned passenger on the bus noticed that the children were not excited or noisy like children would act when going on holiday.
The children were reportedly very quiet, and the passenger noticed that during bus breaks, the children did not get off the bus.
This prompted the passenger to contact the police, who intercepted the bus in Kimberley.

Two Zimbabweans Charged With Human Trafficking In South Africa

The Government of Zimbabwe, through the Minister of Home Affairs and Cultural Heritage Kazembe Kazembe, rejected claims by South African officials that 42 buses carrying 443 unaccompanied minors were intercepted at Beitbridge Border Post on the SA side.
Kazembe on Tuesday, 05 December told journalists in Harare that the claims were false. <a href="https://www.herald.co.zw/zimbabwe-has-no-record-of-child-trafficking-in-sa/">The Herald</a> quoted Kazembe as saying:
<blockquote>
We have noted with concern media statements attributed to the Minister of Home Affairs, Republic of South Africa, Dr Aaron Motsoaledi, alleging that 42 buses carrying 443 unaccompanied minors were intercepted at Beitbridge Border Post on the South African side. We wish to categorically state that no such incident occurred.
If there was a case of human trafficking of minors, the buses, the drivers and the crew would now have been arrested facing human trafficking charges as guided by the Trafficking In Persons legislation common to both jurisdictions in line with our regional and international obligations.
</blockquote>
Kazembe said as of Tuesday night, Zimbabwe had not received the children allegedly intercepted by South African authorities. He said:

To date, Beitbridge Border Post has no record of any 42 buses denied entry into South Africa or 443 minors intercepted or handed over to Zimbabwe authorities.
If there is any information to the contrary, we hope to be advised through the well-established communication channels between the two countries.

Kazembe added that the Government was aware that during festive periods, Zimbabwean parents based in South Africa would invite their children to that country once schools closed. He said:

We are, however, aware that during the festive period, once schools close, Zimbabwe parents resident in South Africa, especially on Zimbabwe Exemption Permits, which do not allow for the inclusion of any dependants, invite their children to South Africa for the festive season.
It is a requirement that the minors travel with their guardians accompanied by supporting affidavits obtained from their consenting parents in line with agreed procedures.
However, of late, the South African authorities are not accepting commissioned affidavits preferring that the minors and their guardians tender affidavits commissioned by local courts.
As Zimbabwe, we remain committed to cooperating with our South African counterparts and the region to ensure that movement through our borders remains safe, orderly and regular.

Masiapato said that a total of 42 buses intended for South Africa were stopped and searched in a sting operation at the border post in Musina, Limpopo.
He also said the children were denied entry “and we activated the Zimbabwean officials to process them back into Zimbabwe.”

Zimbabwe Denies Child Trafficking Claims By South African Officials

South Africa’s Border Management Authority (BMA) says 443 unaccompanied children were intercepted at the Beitbridge Border Post allegedly being trafficked into the country from Zimbabwe on Saturday night, reported <a href="https://www.zimlive.com/south-africa-says-it-intercepted-443-children-being-trafficked-through-beitbridge/">ZimLive</a>.
Speaking during a media briefing on Sunday, BMA commissioner Michael Masiapato said that the children are being returned to Zimbabwe. He said:

A sting operation was conducted by the border guards, the Home Affairs anti-corruption team as well as members of the South African Police Service at the Beitbridge border post.
They were able to stop and search about 42 buses trying to enter the republic and out of that we found 443 children under the age of eight that were in those buses without any parent or any guardian. They were being trafficked into South Africa.
</blockquote>
Masiapato said the children were denied entry “and we activated the Zimbabwean officials to process them back into Zimbabwe.”
It is believed the children were going to join their parents for the Christmas holidays after schools closed on 01 December.

South Africa Intercepts 443 Zimbabwean Children Being "Trafficked" Through Beitbridge

A Chinese man named Chen Dehu (39), along with Joseph Rabson (44) and Shame Mafido (57), appeared in court in Harare for trying to illegally traffick three 17-year-old girls to China for forced marriages.
They appeared before Magistrate Marehwanazvo Gofa and were charged with breaking the law against trafficking in persons, according to <a href="https://www.newsday.co.zw/local-news/article/200018621/chinese-national-in-court-for-human-trafficking">NewsDay</a>.
<h3>What transpired:</h3>
Chen, who is married to Rabson’s child, came to Zimbabwe in October and allegedly planned to traffick the girls without their knowledge. It is said that Chen, Rabson, and Mafido promised the victims false education scholarships and jobs to deceive them. Rabson and Mafido are said to be close relatives of the victims.
On October 18, the three transported the girls from Karoi to Harare and booked a room for them at 27 Hillview Lodge. They stayed there for four days while waiting for their travel documents to be processed.
The accused individuals also obtained new birth certificates to change the girls’ ages from 17 to 20. Acting on a tip-off about minors being held at the lodge, detectives from the CID Counter Terrorism Unit arrested the three suspects.
Magistrate Marehwanazvo Gofa remanded them for a bail ruling.
In the past, many Zimbabweans have fallen victim to human trafficking. They are promised good jobs in other countries, but instead, they end up being enslaved or forced into sex work. Some have been rescued, but others are still trapped in these terrible situations. Unfortunately, some of them have also contracted HIV. Authorities are urging the public to be cautious and carefully verify the identity of agents offering opportunities abroad. Chinese Man And Two Zimbabweans In Court For Trafficking 3 Girls For Forced Marriages In China

A Marondera woman appeared in court on Wednesday on allegations of recruiting people and selling them to prospective buyers in Oman to work as housemaids.
Karen Pamela Teguru (31) was arraigned before Harare magistrate Marehwanazvo Gofa facing charges of violating the Trafficking of People Act.
Teguru was remanded in custody pending trial.
The court heard that between January and August 2022, Teguru connived with one Hamidah believed to be in Oman and others who are still at large to traffic Portia Kalesi and Namatirai Muchacha for the purpose of labour and domestic exploitation.
Teguru allegedly identified, recruited, processed travelling documents, and arranged medical examinations for the two and escorted them to Robert Gabriel Mugabe International Airport destined for Oman instead of Dubai as promised.
It is further alleged that Kalesi and Muchacha realised that they had been duped upon arrival at Muscat International Airport in Oman instead of Dubai as promised.
Teguru’s accomplices allegedly provided money for medical examinations, air tickets, processing of visas and sourcing of markets in which the two would be sold well before they had reached Oman.
Upon arrival in Oman, Hamidah sold the two to buyers who in turn confiscated their travelling documents and drove them to different locations where they were forced to work as housemaids.
The two were allegedly subjected to domestic servitude, working around the clock, feeding on leftovers, being physically abused and denied freedom of movement by being restricted indoors.
The matter came to light when the two reported the matter to their relatives back home who in turn reported that matter to the Zimbabwe Republic Police (ZRP).
The two eventually fled from their abusers and met with the Zimbabwean delegation dispatched to Oman to repatriate them.

Marondera Woman (31) In Court For Human Trafficking

Police in Bulawayo have dismissed social media reports that a man from the Barbourfields suburb was holding three schoolchildren at his home against their will.
A social media post stated that there was a man, Dalubuhle Ngwenya, who was involved in human trafficking.
The post also provided Ngwenya’s address, saying he was well connected with the police and he was not afraid of anyone.
However, the ZRP spokesperson in Bulawayo Province, Assistant Inspector Nomalanga Msebele dismissed the social media posts.
She told the <a href="https://www.chronicle.co.zw/police-dismiss-human-trafficking-hoax/">Chronicle</a> that police interviewed Ngwenya who said he suspects his ex-wife was behind the social media post. Said Asst Insp Msebele:

In response to the social media message on human trafficking which is circulating, police in Bulawayo did preliminary investigations and nothing detrimental was found.
The suspect Dalubuhle Ngwenya a male adult aged 42 years of Barbourfields was interviewed and stated that he is processing a divorce with his wife and he believes that the message is meant to discredit him…
The two girls are known. One of them is a stepdaughter to Ngwenya meaning that she is a daughter to his to-be ex-wife and once lived in that house and often comes to the house, ruling out the human trafficking offence.
Efforts are being made to locate the two girls and according to the investigations done the two teenagers are delinquents and mischievous.

Msebele warned members of the public against using social media to settle their personal scores or to settle their differences.

Police Dismiss Human Trafficking Social Media Post

The Government says it plans to repatriate more Zimbabweans who are stranded in Oman, an Arab country located in Western Asia.
The Zimbabwean nationals, the majority of who were females, were lured into slavery through false promises of well-paying domestic work in Oman.
Speaking to <a href="https://www.sundaymail.co.zw/govt-to-repatriate-more-nationals-stuck-in-oman">The Sunday Mail</a>, Home Affairs and Cultural Heritage permanent secretary Major-General (retired) Dr. Gerald Gwinji said 107 women and men were repatriated from Middle Eastern country.
However, according to the Government’s database, about 21 Zimbabweans remain stranded in the country. Said Gwinji:

In response to distress calls made by victims of trafficking in Oman, the Government of Zimbabwe allocated resources through Treasury for the repatriation of 107 Zimbabwean nationals.
Of the people repatriated back to Zimbabwe, 105 were female and two were male.
There have been several reports of Zimbabweans who have fallen victim to traffickers.
Using information extracted from the reports, a WhatsApp platform was created to facilitate coordination and to have an appreciation of the number of victims of human trafficking and, as of December 2022, at least 128 people have been trafficked to Oman, with the majority having been repatriated by Government.
Furthermore, Government is considering carrying out the second phase of the repatriation exercise to bring back stranded Zimbabwean nationals in our database.
… A total of 69 cases of trafficking in persons (TIP) involving 139 victims of trafficking were recorded and investigated.
Seven suspects were arrested for TIP in 2022 and are currently in custody pending trial, while three were arrested for domestic trafficking cases.

<h2>Suspected human trafficker on the run</h2>
Police have since launched a manhunt for Jacqueline Takure, nee Chikukwa (45) who is wanted for questioning in connection with suspected human trafficking.
In 2022, Takure allegedly posed as an employment agent and misrepresented to five people that she could facilitate their employment in well-paying hotels in Dubai.
She then facilitated the travel of the victims to Oman where they had their passports confiscated by her accomplices on arrival.
<h2>Kafala System</h2>
Most Gulf nations enforce the kafala labour system. According to <a href="https://www.cfr.org/backgrounder/what-kafala-system">the Council on Foreign Relations</a>, the system gives private citizens and companies in Jordan, Lebanon, and most Arab Gulf countries almost total control over migrant workers’ employment and immigration status.
The kafala system resembles a form of indirect slavery, making it harder for migrants to escape such dreadful situations, <a href="https://sites.bu.edu/pardeeatlas/opinions/op-ed-the-kafala-sponsorship-system-fuels-modern-day-slavery/#:~:text=This%20corrupt%20strategy%20resembles%20a,for%20contemporary%20modern%2Dday%20slavery.">according to a report</a>.

Govt Plans To Repatriate More Zimbabweans Stuck In Oman

A Zimbabwean woman has appeared before the courts facing human trafficking charges after she allegedly “enslaved” a juvenile from Chitungwiza.
Daisy Machiha (34), from Harare, appeared before Chitungwiza Magistrate Court charged with violating section 3 of the Trafficking in Persons Act, according to <a href="https://www.newsday.co.zw/local-news/article/200008981/harare-woman-up-for-slavery">NewsDay.</a>
She was remanded in custody to Monday for the commencement of trial in a case presided over by regional magistrate Gloria Takundwa. 
What happened:
It is alleged that on December 31, 2021, Machiha met the juvenile at Mukomberwa in Zengeza 5 and lied that there was a job vacancy that the juvenile could take.
Machiha then transported the juvenile to her home in Budiriro 5B where she allegedly “enslaved” her by making her work for no pay.
The State told the court:

The accused person made the complainant do domestic chores like sweeping, washing, cooking and made her take care of her two minor children for no pay for a period of one year.
She also ill-treated the complainant by assaulting her, using a cooking stick, clenched fists and open hands.
The accused denied her access to contact her parents and relatives for a period of one year. She also made sure that the complainant did not go out of the yard alone and she took advantage of the fact that the complainant was not familiar with Harare.

The matter came to light when neighbours reported the matter to the police.
Reports of Modern-day slavery and human trafficking:
Modern-day slavery and human trafficking still exist in various parts of the world, and people from vulnerable populations, including those from low-income families or countries, may be at a higher risk. 
There have been reports of African migrants being exploited and enslaved in different parts of the world. 
In recent years, there were reports of Zimbabweans being exploited and <a href="https://zero.pindula.co.zw/job-seeking-marondera-woman-25-enslaved-in-oman/">enslaved in Oman. </a>
There are also reports of Zimbabweans being exploited and enslaved in South Africa, which is a serious issue. 
It is essential to raise awareness and take steps to prevent human trafficking and forced labour, including educating oneself on the signs and reporting suspicious activities. 
To avoid human trafficking, you can:

2). Learn about the causes of trafficking and educate others.
3). Help support vulnerable groups, like refugees and women.

Zimbabwean Woman Up For Human Trafficking

Zimbabwe’s main airport, the Robert Gabriel Mugabe International Airport (RGMI) in Harare, has reportedly become a human trafficking hotspot.
It is alleged that human trafficking syndicates made up of State security agents and political heavyweights are facilitating illegal entry into the country for foreign nationals en route to South Africa.
<a href="https://www.newsday.co.zw/thestandard/news/article/200007062/rgm-airport-a-human-trafficking-hotspot">The Standard </a>reported that state security details at the airport were worried that agencies such as the Central Intelligence Organisation (CIO) were ignoring reports of illegal entry through the airport.
A Military Intelligence Department (MID) operative who was deployed at the airport was allegedly arrested recently on suspicion of conniving with immigration officers to facilitate the illegal entry of four Indian officials into the country. Said the source:

The Indian nationals were intercepted by MID and the taxi driver, who was transporting them implicated a member of MID who was stationed at the airport.
People involved in this brag that nothing will happen to them as they have the protection of their bosses.

Four immigration officials were reportedly arrested for their alleged involvement in the scandal.
Respect Gono, the Immigration Department director-general, told The Standard that mainly Pakistanis and Ethiopians were being trafficked. She said:

We have Pakistan and Ethiopian nationals mainly being trafficked into the country, giving us problems.
The majority of them are going to South Africa in search of greener pastures.
South Africa has stringent measures, so Ethiopians prefer to come via Zimbabwe.
We currently have no global management system, which can track these activities.
But we are expecting to launch it soon.
When that system is now in place you will see things improving.

Zimbabwe Republic Police (ZRP) spokesperson Assistant Commissioner Paul Nyathi told The Standard he was not aware of reports of human trafficking at the RGMI Airport. He said:

This is the first time I heard that there is a problem of human trafficking at the airport.
Firstly, I want to find out and secondly, if there are such reports then we should have those people who have the information come forward and report so that investigations can be conducted.

RGM Airport A Human Trafficking Hotspot... Security Agents, Political Bigwigs Implicated

A 25-year-old woman from Marondera was allegedly trafficked to Oman in April by an unknown Zimbabwean man who had promised her a good-paying job.
Police said the suspect made all the arrangements for the woman to travel to the Middle Eastern country and he is now demanding to be reimbursed.
The man is reportedly abusing his victim and demanding to be paid US$1 800 which he claims he used to cover the woman’s travelling expenses. The ZRP said:

The ZRP is investigating a case of human trafficking where a Marondera woman (25) was lured to travel to Oman by an unknown Zimbabwean who promised her employment in April 2022.
The suspect, who arranged the travelling logistics, is reportedly abusing the victim in the foreign country, threatening her to refund the US$1800 that he claims to have used for the victim’s travelling expenses.
</blockquote>
Meanwhile, <a href="https://zero.pindula.co.zw/marondera-woman-arrested-for-human-trafficking/">a 35-year-old woman from Marondera was arrested on allegations of trafficking two women to Oman in April this year.</a>
Farisai Mupeti appeared before a Harare magistrate facing charges of human trafficking after she allegedly lured two Zimbabweans to Oman where they were enslaved.
The trafficked women were identified as Murriam Zihumo and Isabel Mushoriwa who were both tricked into believing that they had found lucrative jobs in Dubai only to find themselves in slavery in Oman.

Job-seeking Marondera Woman (25) "Enslaved" In Oman

The Zimbabwe Republic Police (ZRP) has reported on a suspected case of human trafficking after two minors, a boy and a girl were found wandering in Bindura, Mashonaland Province. A police statement seen by Pindula News says the victims are suspected to be psychiatric patients who are deaf and dumb and their nationality is not yet known. Read the statement:

Zimbabwe Police Reports On Suspected Human Trafficking

A <a href="https://www.pindula.co.zw/Buhera">Buhera</a> man who trafficked a married woman to Masvingo Province and stayed with her against her will from November 2021 to January 2022 has been sentenced to spend the next 70 years in jail.
Witness Jichichi of Muchuwa Village under Chief Nyashanu was not represented by anyone when he appeared before Rusape regional magistrate, Mr Francis Mapfumo.
He was convicted on one count of human trafficking and sentenced to 10 years in prison.
Jichichi was also convicted on three counts of rape and was sentenced to 20 years imprisonment in each of the cases.
He, however, was acquitted of deliberately infecting the woman with HIV, according to <a href="https://www.manicapost.co.zw/human-trafficker-caged-70-years/">Manica Post</a>.
<h2>What happened:</h2>
Prosecutor, Mr Marlon Makamba said Jichichi lied to the victim and her husband that he was an employee of a development partner and could facilitate the couple’s employment within the organisation in Masvingo.
He tricked the husband to remain behind in the village and lied that he was going to the development partner’s local offices to sign the employment contract with the complainant.
Instead, he took the unsuspecting woman into captivity.
After tricking the complainant and her husband, Jichichi went with the complainant to an unknown place in Masvingo.
While in Masvingo, Jichichi would force himself on the woman and in the process, he “deliberately” infected her with HIV.
The woman told the court that while in Masvingo, she stayed at a farm with Jichichi and he would always act like her bodyguard, following her around.
Jichichi only released his captive after learning that the woman’s relatives were looking for her on both formal and social media platforms.

Buhera Man Jailed For 70 Years For Human Trafficking

Turkey’s ambassador to Zimbabwe Berna Kasnakli Versteden has dismissed reports that Zimbabweans were being trafficked to her country as labour and sex slaves.
Versteden spoke about the human trafficking reports on Tuesday during a courtesy call to the Speaker of the National Assembly Jacob Mudenda.
This follows a report by NewsDay in June this year which claimed that scores of Zimbabweans were stranded in Turkey after they were trafficked there on false job promises.
Turkey’s top diplomat in Zimbabwe said the allegations were false, adding that Ankara and Harare enjoyed cordial relations. She said:

We have done the necessary steps regarding such fake news and there are no such things as such and we have issued a statement on that.
The co-operation on scholarships is continuing. We are receiving more applications all the time every year.

Turkey Denies Human Trafficking Reports

The Zimbabwe Republic Police has updated the public the following cases:
<h2>Human Trafficking </h2>
<blockquote>
Motorists are warned against using vehicles in human trafficking episodes in connivance with foreign nationals. On 15/08/22, Police in Murewa arrested 86 foreign nationals comprising 76 males and 10 females for entering the country without travelling documents.
The suspects were intercepted at a house in Medium Density Suburbs, Murewa after being assisted by a local transporter.
In another case, on 17/08/22, ZRP Gweru Rural arrested Wosith Travellers Coach bus crew for Human Trafficking after transporting 82 foreign nationals without travelling documents.
Meanwhile, on 16/08/22 Detectives in Murewa arrested three foreign nationals in Murewa who were hitch hiking from South Africa enroute to Nyamapanda without following laid custom and excise procedures.

<h2>Hit and run</h2>

ZRP Gokwe Traffic is investigating a hit and run road traffic accident in which an unknown motorist driving a pick-up vehicle hit a juvenile (7) along an unnamed road in Mapfungautsi high density suburb.
The juvenile sustained serious head injuries and died on the spot. Anyone with information to contact any nearest Police Station.

On 18/08/22 at around 1910 hours, Detectives from CID Homicide swiftly reacted to a report of robbery and arrested Moses Mutswiri (46) and Carrington Garikai (42). The duo were allegedly seen by the public attacking the complainant with a machete before stealing a cellphone. The arrest led to the recovery of a machete. Investigations are in progress.

ZRP Colleen Bawn is investigating a murder case which occurred on 17/08/22 at a tuck shop at Vhovha mine. The victim, Mnanzeleli Mathambo died after he was stabbed on the thigh with an unknown sharp object by the suspect, Nyasha Dube. 
The victim had allegedly failed to explain why he had joined the suspect and his friends at a fireplace where they were warming themselves, and this did on go well with the suspect.

Police in Mazowe are investigating a murder case in which Tavonga Mufunga (22) died after he was stabbed on the chest several times with a knife by six unidentified suspects on 17/08/22 at Chawana Gold Claim, Jumbo.
The suspects stole two sacks of gold ore from the victim and the informant who was accompanying the victim. Anyone with information to contact any nearest Police Station.

The ZRP reiterates that parents should always monitor children while playing outdoors. On 17/08/22, ZRP Mabelreign recorded a sudden death report where a minor (2) pushed a bucket with hot water and sustained serious burns all over the body at Spitzkop Reinham on 10/08/22. The minor later died at Sally Mugabe Hospital.

The ZRP confirms the arrest of Owen Limakho (41) and Mbuso Dube in connection with a case of attempted robbery which occurred at a house in Madubes, Plumtree on 17/08/22 at about 0100 hours.
The suspects threatened to rob the complainant (52) while armed with firearms before the complainant alerted neighbours by blowing a whistle. The suspects sped off from the scene in a getaway Toyota Mark 2 vehicle, ABH 2620.
Investigations by Police led to the arrest of the duo and the recovery of a balaclava woollen hat, 8 800K Vilts Electric Shocker, Dan Wesson 357 Magnum revolver, 177 CAL 4.5mm Gas Pistol and a 12 volts Willard size battery in the Toyota Mark 2 vehicle.

Police Update: Makorokoza Murder, Human Trafficking, Freak Accident, And Robbery

A 40-year-old Zimbabwean woman who was trafficked to Oman died on Wednesday in Muscat, the capital city of the Gulf state.
Margret Kachasu, who was a domestic worker for Saif Alhabsi, succumbed to cervical cancer.
The Zimbabwe Trafficking in Persons Advocacy (ZTIPA) chairperson Tabeth Masiyiwa confirmed Kachasu’s demise. She said:

Margret succumbed to cervical cancer. Four days before her death she was requesting to be taken back home but unfortunately, her employer could not fund the trip as he claimed that he had exhausted all his money on medical bills.
She reportedly bled profusely. The employer didn’t know it was due to cancer till she could not work.
When we wanted to take her home she refused. Four days ago she started saying I want to go back home but the money was finished when we took her to the hospital.
We didn’t have any problem with her, she could do her job properly. But for the past two weeks, she became seriously ill.
</blockquote>
The deceased’s remains are yet to be repatriated to Zimbabwe. Her brother, Collin Kachasu told NewsDay that they have presented their case to the Government. He said:

We went to the Foreign Affairs ministry and presented our case. We are now waiting for a response from my relatives who are currently working in Oman. They said they were going to speak to Zimbabwe’s consular.

The Government recently said about 100 Zimbabwean citizens are being subjected to slavery by their employers in Oman.
Home Affairs ministry permanent secretary Aaron Nhepera said the Government plans to repatriate Zimbabwean citizens from Oman.

Interpol Launches Manhunt For Zim Human Trafficking Agent Who Sent Women To Kuwait

The government will be giving victims of human trafficking who were repatriated from Kuwait up to $1 500 for self sustaining projects to try to reduce the chances of the same people being trafficked again. An estimated 200 women are reported to have been stranded in Kuwait after falling victim to human trafficking victims. So far, at least 128 women have been rescued and returned to the country and more women are still expected.
Permanent Secretary in the Ministry of Public Service, Labour and Social Welfare Ngoni Masoka told parliament:
<blockquote>It is worth mentioning that more women are still expected to come as more awareness is raised with the support of the Zimbabwean Embassy in Kuwait.
The first hundred returnees have submitted project proposals that will be funded to a maximum of 1,500 dollars each to start income generating projects.</blockquote>

Human trafficking victims to receive $1 500 to start projects

Raymond Sithole (25) of Chibeng Village allegedly trafficked four Zimbabweans to South Africa where he used them for forced labour.
His trial has been set for 4 April where he will be tried at the Seshengo Magistrate Court in Polokwane. He was arrested on January 3 by The Hawks following a tip off. Hawks spokesperson for Limpopo Captain Matimba Maluleke said that Sithole’s victims were aged between 15 and 20 and were illegally transported into South Africa on the promise of good jobs. Maluleke said the four were held hostage by Sithole who would send them to steal and do other jobs without payment. He would severely assault them if they failed to comply with his orders.

Home Affairs Minister, Ignatius Chombo has warned Zimbabweans to be wary of people who offer them overseas jobs as they may end up being victims of human trafficking.
Responding in Parliament recently on the measures being taken by Government against human trafficking, Chombo appealed to legislators to let his ministry know if there is anyone making false job adverts. He also urged Members of Parliament to educate people in their constituencies. He said if a recruiting agent asks for money it is wise for one to report such a person to the police.
Last year Zimbabwe had over 200 women stranded in Kuwait after they were lured into believing they will get good jobs on arrival.
