Three members of a Hurungwe family succumbed to poisoning after they were struck by a venomous snake suspected to be a Black Mamba while searching for firewood.
The incident occurred in the Karuru area of Hurungwe district a fortnight ago, but the trio died between Tuesday and Wednesday this week.
The deceased have been identified as Emilia Musiiwa (nee Moyo) aged 47, her daughter Nyarai (21) and grandson Tatenda Tototo (15).
The late Emilia’s husband, Tapiwa Musiiwa told NewZimbabwe.com that the deaths dealt him a heavy blow. He said:

The incident has left me devastated.
The three were looking for firewood when the snake bit Nyarai, prompting her mother to try and scare away the creature but it also attacked her.
Sensing danger, our grandson Tatenda tried to run away but the snake pursued him and striked.
The three victims were taken to hospital for treatment, but unfortunately the boy died at Chinhoyi Provincial Hospital yesterday (Tuesday) while my wife and daughter passed on at Sally Mugabe Hospital (formerly Harare Hospital) in Harare today (Wednesday).

A local funeral parlour pledged to ferry the bodies to Karuru Ward 8, Hurungwe for burial Thursday.
Experts say when one is bitten by a black mamba, first aid should focus on maintaining vital functions, such as respiratory support. The victim should be kept still and try to limit any unnecessary movement.

Black Mamba Kills Three Family Members

A resident of Hurungwe in Mashonaland West province, Vincent Chigwedere (47) was recently acquitted on charges of undermining the authority of or insulting President Emmerson Mnangagwa.
Chigwedere appeared before Kariba Magistrate Tendai Banda on charges of undermining the authority of or insulting President Mnangagwa as defined in Section 33(2)(b) of the Criminal Law (Codification and Reform) Act.
According to the Zimbabwe Lawyers for Human Rights (ZLHR), prosecutors alleged that Chigwedere impaired the image of President Mnangagwa when he unlawfully and intentionally made an obscene and indecent statement concerning the President.
He is alleged to have made the remarks during a verbal altercation over a land ownership dispute.
Chigwedere was, however, discharged at the close of the prosecution case by Magistrate Banda, who ruled that prosecutors had failed to establish a prima facie case against him.
He was represented by Unite Saizi of Zimbabwe Lawyers for Human Rights.

Hurungwe Man Set Free For Insulting Mnangagwa

ZANU PF members and MDC Alliance supporters were involved in violent clashes at Zvipani Business Centre in Hurungwe, Mashonaland West on Wednesday ahead of a planned visit by MDC Alliance leader Nelson Chamisa.
MDC Alliance provincial spokesperson, Blessing Mandava told NewZimbabwe.com, that ZANU PF supporters were trying to disrupt Chamisa’s scheduled public address.
He said five MDC Alliance members, including national Women’s Assembly official Mordester Majinjiwa (who was attacked with a bottle), were injured in the violence. Said Mandava:

A group of ZANU PF elements came to Zvipani and started beating up our members who were singing and merry-making while awaiting president Chamisa to deliver his address.
There was chaos as we fought running battles with the rogue ZANU PF members who sparked violence unprovoked to try and disrupt the people’s president from meeting with villagers who had turned out in large numbers.
</blockquote>
He said state security agents were heavily deployed along the Harare-Chirundu highway while suspected ZANU PF members also barricaded roads. Said Mandava:

MDC Alliance president Chamisa’s motorcade encountered many hurdles along the way. Besides being trailed by Central intelligence Organisation (CIO) operatives everywhere we went, roads were blocked using rocks and logs, especially at Nhari.

At Nyabira, ZANU PF hastily arranged an anti-sanctions march to distract people’s attention from Chamisa’s tour, while at Chinhoyi, police officers could be seen chasing away vendors, believed to be Chamisa sympathisers.
ZANU PF supporters in Masvingo and Manicaland employed similar dirty tactics against Chamisa when he toured the provinces recently.

MDC Alliance leader Nelson Chamisa on Wednesday took his “citizens tour” to Mashonaland West Province, with the party reporting more incidents of politically-motivated violence.
The MDC-A last week claimed that Chamisa escaped a suspected assassination attempt in Mutare, having previously come under siege in Masvingo where his convoy was stoned by ZANU PF supporters and roads were blocked ahead of his visit.
MDC Alliance provincial chairman, Ralph Magunje and his executive reportedly met at the party’s offices in Chinhoyi to make logistical arrangements ahead of the presidential hopeful’s visit.
In <a href="https://twitter.com/mdcmashwest/status/1453392733486387201?s=20">posts on Twitter</a> this Wednesday, the MDC Alliance said in Hurungwe, a Central Intelligence Organisation (CIO) official named Batsi, who was driving an Isuzu vehicle, registration number ADL8964, was seen driving around venues for Chamisa’s interface meetings.
One Franco Ndambakuhwa is alleged to have bussed in ZANU PF militia using his white truck reg no ACY6670 seeking “to bulldoze the venues”, according to the MDC Alliance.
The opposition party also alleged that at Zvipani in Hurungwe, Munyaradzi Ngandini a ZANU PF member beat up five people injuring Mai Chambati, an MDC Alliance member in the process.
In Magunje, the ruling party sent its militias to barricade the road with placards. They stoned several cars and many people got injured, the MDC Alliance further alleged.
Meanwhile, <a href="https://www.newzimbabwe.com/trailblazing-chamisa-takes-roadshow-to-mash-west/">NewZimbabwe.com</a> reported sources as saying that State security agents were put on high alert ahead of the MDC Alliance president’s highly-anticipated visit.
Central Intelligence Organisation (CIO) operatives, military and police intelligence agents were heavily deployed in areas such as Nyabira and Banket, where ZANU PF activists are reportedly planning to cause drama.

Chamisa Takes 'Citizens Tour' To Mash West

Retired Colonel Patrick Tawona Maponga was found dead at his home in Magunje on Tuesday morning. He was 60.
Maponga was a veteran of Zimbabwe’s war of independence. He lost his wife early this year.
According to a Hurungwe war veteran member, Don Nxele, the late Maponga was among freedom fighters who took the land reform seriously.
He said Maponga was first allocated a plot at the Nassau Farm near Karoi in 2001, but later moved to Mshowe Pools in Hurungwe East constituency in 2003. Said Nxele:

I remember that he was among the few freedom fighters who took farming as a business. In 2004, he hosted African senior army officers who wanted to understand how the land reform was benefitting indigenous people at Mshowe Pools Farm.
Some came from Egypt, South Africa, Namibia and other Southern Africa countries. By then, he was into wheat and maize production.
Of late, Maponga had ventured into cattle rearing, horticulture, poultry and crocodile farming.
</blockquote>
Maponga joined the liberation struggle at a tender age and was trained in Tanzania. He rose through the ranks to become an instructor in Mozambique before independence.
He was integrated into the Zimbabwe National Army soon after independence. He was among the soldiers deployed in Mozambique and the Democratic Republic of Congo as an instructor.
At one time, he was deployed at Magunje 2.3 Infantry Battalion before he voluntarily retired in 1997.
Burial arrangements are still yet to be announced.
He is survived by eight children.

Karoi residents inundated Karoi Hospital and other health facilities in Hurungwe District at the weekend to be vaccinated against COVID-19 as the coronavirus wrecks havoc in Mashonaland West Province.
The government last month declared Hurungwe, Kariba and Makonde as COVID-19 hotspots and put them under localised lockdowns.
Hurungwe District medical officer Munyaradzi Wilbur Chidaushe on Monday told NewsDay that people from nearby farms and villages have responded well to the vaccination drive. He said:
<blockquote>We expect the demand to keep increasing as citizens heed the call by the government to get vaccinated.</blockquote>
Kariba district medical officer Godwin Muza said there was also a huge demand for the life-saving vaccines in the resort town, but health authorities are yet to get more supplies of the doses after previous supplies ran out.
Members of the public are also reportedly coming for the jab in droves in Makonde District, which incorporates Chinhoyi.
Chinhoyi municipality is inviting residents to get immunised at its clinics in Mzari, Chikonohono, Gadzema and Alaska.

Stampede For COVID-19 Jabs In Mash West

A 49-year-old Hurungwe man is lucky to be alive after surviving a lion attack in Chirundu last month.
Isa Chitenje narrated his encounter with the big cat during a live show on Star Fm radio with Tilder Moyo where he sensationally claimed that he shoved his hand into the lion’s mouth during the attack to avoid being torn to pieces.
In an interview with H-Metro this week, Chitenje, a gardener attached to Tiger Safaris in Mujinga Village, Hurungwe said he was yet to recover from the wounds he suffered during the attack on 13 May this year. He said:
<blockquote>It is only by the grace of the Lord that I survived and I would like to thank my fellow workers Thomas Dzamba, Takesure Dzamba and Amos Dzamba who heard my cry and rushed to scare the lion when it was dragging me into the bush.
I was on my way from Chirundu shopping centre going home at around 6 pm when the lion attacked me.
I do not know how I thought of forcing my hand into its mouth and that reduced its strength and I shouted for help.
It scratched most parts of my body with its jaws and upon seeing people it left me and disappeared into the bush.
It is my prayer that I respond well to the treatment I am receiving but I am facing challenges in meeting the medical bills.</blockquote>
Chitenje is a father of four and a follower of the Gorejena Apostolic Faith Church.

Hurungwe Man Fights Lion With Bare Hands

Karoi Town Council engineer, Oswell Mazvimbakupa (45) died Thursday morning due to COVID-19 complications.
Mazvimbakupa’s death was confirmed by the Council administration officer, Hastings Makunda. He told NewZimbabwe.com:
<blockquote>Yes, we have lost the engineer who was recently diagnosed positive of COVID-19. We are currently making necessary arrangements for his funeral to be held at his residence at the council’s Shambatungwe farm here in Karoi.</blockquote>
The government recently imposed a localised COVID-19 lockdown on Hurungwe District, which encompasses Karoi, to stop the spread of the virus.
Hurungwe District police commander, Chief Superintendent Helena Mahonde said Tuesday police were worried at the sprouting of shebeens in and around the town.

She revealed that law enforcement agents had arrested scores of shebeen operators.

Makonde became the third district in Mashonaland West Province to face such a measure after Hurungwe and Kariba.

Karoi Town Engineer Succumbs To COVID-19

Zimbabwe has announced 192 new coronavirus infections in the last 24 hours, raising fears of a third wave of the virus and a stricter lockdown.
New cases have been on an upward trajectory over the last several days with 192 cases recorded on the 11th of June, 64 on the 10th, 111 on the 9th and 83 new cases on 8 June.
In its daily coronavirus or COVID-19 situation report on 11 June 2021, the Ministry of Health and Child Care (MoHCC) said:
<blockquote>192 New Cases (All Local) and 3 Deaths reported today. (These 192 cases include 82 cases from Mash West whose samples were collected in the last 4 days(7 to 11 June) and results were reported today after the samples were processed.) (7 day rolling average* for new cases rises to 77 today from 58 yesterday).
… As of 11 June 2021, Zimbabwe has recorded 39 688 Cases 36970 recoveries &amp; 1629 Deaths.</blockquote>
Meanwhile, the government has announced a two-week localised lockdown for Hurungwe and Kariba districts to contain the spread of the novel coronavirus
Both districts are in Mashonaland West Province and the lockdown comes after more than 40 new infections were recorded there in the past three days.

The government has announced a two-week localised lockdown for Hurungwe and Kariba districts to contain the spread of the novel coronavirus after more than 40 new infections were recorded in the past three days.
The localised lockdown was announced on Friday night, by chief Director Curative Services in the Ministry of Health and Child Care, Dr Maxwell Hove. He said:
<blockquote>The Ministry of Health and Child Care has noted an increase in Covid-19 cases in Mashonaland West province and the hotspots are Hurungwe and Kariba districts.
More than 40 cases were recorded in the last three days. The Ministry has therefore declared a lockdown in the hotspots of Kariba and Hurungwe districts. The lockdown will be reviewed after two weeks.
Those living outside Hurungwe and Kariba are prohibited from visiting the two districts. The public is advised that health education, contact tracing, and isolating positive cases is being done.</blockquote>
Hove urged members of the public to cooperate with health workers and to continue adhering to the World Health Organisation (WHO) containment measures like sanitising, social distancing and the correct wearing of face masks.

The development comes after the government extended a localised lockdown for Kwekwe after detecting the highly transmissible Delta variant (Indian variant) of the virus.

The Zimbabwe Republic Police (ZRP) has announced the arrest of Tawanda Kasinga who is the suspected killer of a 15-year-old Hurungwe girl on 7 February this year. We present the statement in full below.

The Zimbabwe Republic Police confirms the arrest of Tawanda Kasinga (26) of Nyamupfukudza Village 2, Chief Dendera, Hurungwe in connection with a suspected murder case of a female juvenile (15) which occurred on 07 February 2021.
On the date mentioned, the victim was sent to Dote Business Centre, Hurungwe to buy some groceries and she did not return home. A search ensued and she was found dead in a bush near the Shopping Centre.
Police investigations led to the arrest of the suspect from his hideout in Banket on 08th March 2021 and the recovery of some grocery items which were last seen being carried by the victim. The suspect had also given part of the stolen goods In the form of body creams to his relatives. It was also established that, the suspect was on the Police wanted persons list for robbery and theft cases which occurred in Magunje.

ZRP Arrest Suspected Killer Of 15-Year-Old Hurungwe Girl

Outspoken Norton legislator Temba Mliswa was yesterday arrested for the same offense he was arrested for less than a fortnight ago, hosting a public event against the government’s COVID-19 restrictions prohibiting gatherings during the national lockdown.
Mliswa himself revealed that he was hosting a Govt youth, agricultural initiative when he was arrested and said:
<blockquote>The persecution continues!! I’ve been arrested again for the 78th time! This time at my Spring Farm, Karoi where I was approached for a venue to host a Govt youth, agricultural initiative. The programme is being carried out throughout the districts and Spring Farm was selected in Hurungwe District.
In attendance was an official from Ministry of Youth&amp;rep from Chinhoyi Uni. It boggles the mind that I’m not even the convenor &amp; yet I’m targeted &amp;arrested. Notwithstanding the fact agriculture is an essential service and less than 15 were present.</blockquote>
Mliswa shared his ZRP charge sheet that showed he was arrested for hosting a public event and thanked people who prayed for him.

Temba Mliswa Arrested, Again

4 artisanal miners reportedly lost their lives last week when a boat they were using to cross a flooded Munyati River capsized, New Zimbabwe reports. According to the publication, The 4 unfortunate victims of the incident were identified as:

<li> Ngonidzashe Mapfumo (48),</li>
<li>Nyasha Mapfumo (age unknown),</li>
<li>Promise Gwade (age unknown)</li>
<li>Tinashe Matesanwa (age unknown).</li>
</ol>
ZRP Officer commanding Hurungwe district, Chief Superintendent Helena Mahonde confirmed the case and told the publication that the men were going back to their rural homes when tragedy struck:
<blockquote>The tragic incident happened when the now deceased persons found a flooded Sanyati river while returning to their homes.
A ferry operator, one Frances Mukakatanwa reportedly offered to help them cross for a US$10 fee.
They accepted the offer and went on to load their goods onto the makeshift boat.
After venturing about 160m into the turbulent waters, the boat was reportedly hit by a water wave and capsized.
The ferry operator and one of the passengers Josphat Mapfumo managed to swim to the shores, while the now deceased four men were swept away and drowned.</blockquote>
Zimbabwe has received incessant rains over the past few weeks and incidences of drowning and vehicles being swept away by strong currents have increased over the last few weeks.

4 Men Drown In Sanyati River After Their Boat Capsize

The Zimbabwe Republic Police (ZRP) has dismissed claims that the late MDC Alliance councillor Lavender Chiwaya was murdered.
In a statement, police national spokesperson Assistant Commissioner Paul Nyathi said postmortem results indicated Chiwaya was not murdered. The statement read:
<blockquote>The police want to make it clear that the postmortem results have ruled out any assault, physical harm or any body perforation on Lavender Chiwaya. The police are now awaiting toxicology tests to get full facts on the cause of death.
The police are still pursuing allegations of alcohol abuse and girlfriends which were raised during the course of investigations into Lavender Chiwaya’s death.
The Zimbabwe Republic Police implores the public to allow the investigations to proceed smoothly and those with information to contact the investigating officer.</blockquote>
Chiwaya was the councillor for Hurungwe Ward 4. His body was found last week on Friday, four houses away from his home.
The MDC Alliance immediately claimed he was murdered by suspected state agents.
Chiwaya was buried last Wednesday in Karoi under heavy police presence.
