The Zimbabwe Congress of Trade Unions (ZCTU) on Monday slammed bad apples in the security sector who trample on people’s rights when they demonstrate against the government for better living conditions.
In a statement on the commemoration of the Heroes Day and Zimbabwe Defence Forces Day, ZCTU secretary-general Japhet Moyo paid tribute to thousands of gallant men and woman who made the ultimate sacrifice for the country’s political independence from racist settlers.
Moyo, however, castigated the current government, saying people are yearning for the better economic conditions that existed in war-ravaged and sanctions-battered Rhodesia. Said Moyo:
<blockquote>It is a shame and indeed serious indictment on our leadership that people are looking back with nostalgia and fondness of the yesteryear of Ian Smith’s better economic conditions despite Smith’s oppressive and evil regime.
Some of our yesteryear heroes and heroines have turned against the people and have embraced and mastered the vices they fought against during the liberation struggle.
Abductions, arrests, corruption, violence, thuggery, deprivation, segregation, inequalities, and repression are the order of the day. The so-called liberators have become masters and experts of repression.</blockquote>
Moyo asserted that Zimbabweans’ quest for freedom was no longer against colonial rule, but the fight for other liberties such as economic freedom, human rights and the right to demonstrate, assemble and freedom of speech.
He said it was a shame that the security forces were being used in the brutal oppression of the masses that they were supposed to protect.

Workers Feel Nostalgic For Rhodesia's Economic Conditions - ZCTU

Tichatonga Nzekete has said that both General Tongogara and Ian Douglas Smith were not discouraged but were actually motivated by their challenges.
These remarks are made when the ZANU PF government has since the last two decades has been crying over sanctions imposed on the country by EU, UK and USA which they say are choking efforts to revive the economy.

The delivery (dubbed “triplets reception”) was celebrated at Jameson Hotel where Smith took the opportunity to remind the International Community (that had placed Rhodesia under 8 years of sanctions), “You can not bring us down, Rhodesia is far too strong to be destroyed by the enemy ! “.
What is interesting to note is that Rhodesia was the first Sub Saharan Country to establish a Satellite, Television station and Radio Station! Zimbabwe had the best Railway infrastructure in entire Southern Africa! Now it was again on the verge of becoming Africa’s leading Airline by acquiring the then top of the range Boeing 720 aircraft, buying three of them by cash since they were not allowed to borrow outside Zimbabwe and yet, on one hand, it was fighting United Nations sanctions and on the other hand, it was fighting Zanla and Zipra forces! 
In his own words, Smith said “sanctions made us more determined, they made us more focussed, cost-efficient and innovative. We managed to see what the World did not see”. 
To by-pass, the international Isolation and sanction regime (that were begged by Mugabe, Nkomo, Zvobgo and their Guerrillas ), the Rhodesian Gvt purchased 9 Aircraft between 1973 and 1976 via 11 Middlemen and Facilitators! Each Aircraft ends up costing way in excess of 1 600 000 Rhodesian Dollars!

"Gen Tongogara And Ian Smith Specialised In Outsmarting Adversity," Of Sanctions And Other Challenges

The <a href="https://www.pindula.co.zw/Zimbabwe_National_Liberation_War_Veterans_Association" rel="noopener noreferrer" target="_blank">Zimbabwe National Liberation War Veterans Association (ZNLWVA)</a> Harare Province said the government has failed them and should consider how the <a href="https://www.pindula.co.zw/Rhodesia" rel="noopener noreferrer" target="_blank">Rhodesian</a> government under the late <a href="https://www.pindula.co.zw/Ian_Smith" rel="noopener noreferrer" target="_blank">Ian Smith</a> was able to bust sanctions.
Speaking during the Parliamentary Portfolio Committee on Defence and Home Affairs on the Veterans of the Liberation Struggle, 2019 Bill public hearing held at a basketball court near Stoddart Hall in Mbare recently, a representative from the ZNLWA said:
<blockquote>When Smith was under sanctions, he crafted what was called a Serviceman Charter to bust them, but today government is suffering because they have failed to put in place a policy or a Serviceman Charter to bust these sanctions.</blockquote>
In their position paper on the Bill, war veterans accused the government of betrayal after it failed to introduce what they call a War Veteran Bond.
According to the veterans, the War Veteran Bond would ensure that the revolutionary values are maintained in all arms of government so that they can never be changed by any political leaders who may take over leadership.

War Vets Tell Govt To Emulate Rhodesia

<blockquote>The illegitimate government intends to spend $US88 million in scarce foreign currency on the <a href="https://www.pindula.co.zw/Political_Actors_Dialogue" rel="noopener noreferrer" target="_blank">Political Actors Dialogue (POLAD)</a> platform while the nation starves and the slow genocide in the nation’s hospitals is getting worse every day.
POLAD is a talk show of fringe politicians who agree with Mr Mnangagwa and the broke government will spend some US$88 million in allowances, accommodation and workshops on them.
Meanwhile, the crisis in the country’s health institutions is worsening every day and the government has to date fired 211 doctors for demanding a living wage and better working conditions.
In the hospitals, there are virtually no medicines and other consumables while only last week, the police violently quelled a peaceful protest march by the country’s civil servants who were demanding better wages and improved working conditions.
Morale among the country’s civil service has hit rock-bottom.
The odious $88 million budget for POLAD vindicates the position that we took from the onset. We argued as a matter of principle that there was no wisdom in joining a politically compromised process which was designed to co-opt the opposition.
We refused to be puppets of a regime that is devoid of legitimacy. We knew POLAD was part of the regime strategy of co-optation of dissenting voices.
The disgraceful $88 million budget for POLAD is the most visible sign of the Zanu PF regime’s plan to buy the opposition and of the compromised former opposition parties’ willingness to sell their voices for a few pieces of silver.
These individuals masquerading as the opposition have no mandate from the people of Zimbabwe. Having failed to win the hearts of the people, they have shamelessly sold their souls to Zanu PF.
They are not the first to do so in the history of this country. Back in the late 1970s at the height of the liberation struggles, the <a href="https://www.pindula.co.zw/Ian_Smith" rel="noopener noreferrer" target="_blank">Ian Smith</a> regime managed to co-opt a few black leaders.
Those men who sold their souls were duly punished by history as the people emphatically rejected them at the first democratic elections in 1980. The people knew they had been used by the colonial regime to create a facade of change and progress.
Now, as 40 years ago, the people will not be fooled by those who have decided to abandon the cause of genuine democracy by working hand in glove with the monstrous regime.
History has plenty of examples of men and women who, out of selfishness and greed, have abandoned the people and chosen to line their pockets and fill their stomachs.
Mr Mnangagwa himself hires a private for all local and international trips while Zimbabweans can barely afford a meal every day.
The country has no fuel; prices of basic commodities are going up every day while despondent citizens have had to endure 18-hour power outages. The recklessness of this illegitimate regime knows no bounds.
The time has come for Zimbabweans to boldly say No to this gross insensitivity. Only a people’s government-mandated through a legitimate and credible election can begin to address the concerns of the people.
We demand an accountable, corrupt-free government. As we state in our RELOAD document, we demand a sincere, credible and honest dialogue process under a mutually agreed convener, a national transitional authority, comprehensive reforms and free and fair elections that must yield a popularly mandated government, which then must begin to transact the business of the people.

Govt Imitating Ian Smith By Spending US$88 Million On Fringe Opposition Politicians - MDC {Full Text}

An opinionist in the Daily News had lamented the state of the nation under the current administration. The columnist opined how the government seem to be divorced from reality on Zimbabwe when it comes to governance.
<blockquote>These people have lost touch with reality and have no clue what it is like living in the rural areas where money and food are so scarce.
Good leadership skills have been absent for the past 39 years and the current state of this once-highly productive country proves it.
Blaming Rhodes, the imperialist West and everything white doesn’t resonate anymore. 
<a href="https://www.pindula.co.zw/Ian_Smith">Ian Smith</a> was so right when in 1979 he tried to warn those British ministers that the country would end up in chaos under the rule of the current leadership.
No time for recrimination — time to help each other to try and overcome the effects of this ugly drought. The people need  better leadership for them to improve their lives.</blockquote>
This comes at a time when the economy has taken a turn for the worst with prices for basic good soaring beyond the reach of many and wages and salaries remaining stagnant despite the obvious inflation in some case.

OPINION: Zimbabwe Has A Leadership Crisis

Former ZANU PF Mashonaland West provincial chairperson Temba Mliswa said that Zimbabwe can learn a lot from Rhodesia’s last Prime Minister, Ian Douglas Smith on how to bust sanctions.
Mliswa is of the view that sanctions by themselves are not as debilitating as has been claimed in some circles. Rather, corruption among the country’s ruling elite is more ruinous than the sanctions. Said Mliswa:
<blockquote>My homeboy from Shurugwi, Ian Douglas Smith had very profound words all can learn from regarding the imposition of sanctions. The level of CORRUPTION in Zimbabwe is our biggest challenge to economic success.
Sanctions understood as an abuse of power and use of destruction for political expediency can also include corruption which is a self-imposed form of the same, more pernicious and damaging than traditional sanctions.
We have many cases of gross corruption which has national significance negatively. NSSA, Chiadzwa diamonds, Hwange scandal, ZINARA’s dubious tenders and many others where money has and is being abused. All these monies should have gone to supporting national production.
The limitation of sanctions is manifest in the Rhodesian and Cuban examples where they were and are more punishing. That should inform us about the existence of some other factor(s) derailing progress and development, more lethal, near and within our national purview.</blockquote>

Zim Govt Should Learn From Ian Smith - Temba Mliswa

The Daily News editor has likened Zimbabwe to a fictitious character in Charles Dickens’s Immutable novel, Oliver Twist.
Reserve Bank of Zimbabwe governor Dr John Mangudya called Zimbabwe “a stepchild in a family of nations” when he appeared before Parliament a few days ago.
Zimbabwe has tried to borrow money from Botswana and South Africa in recent months but all attempts have hit a brick wall. The editorial reads in part:
<blockquote>President Emmerson Mnangagwa’s government and that of his predecessor Robert Mugabe blame Zimbabwe’s deep-seated economic problems on sanctions imposed on the country by the United States and other western countries.
We are, however, of the view that economic sanctions have become a convenient scapegoat that our government uses to mask its inability and incompetence to address the challenges being faced by the country.
It is crucial to remind Mnangagwa’s government that this country under the late Ian Smith’s racist government witnessed remarkable development despite economic sanctions that had been imposed by the rest of the progressive world in response to the oppression and discrimination of indigenous blacks.
Instead of continually moaning over the sanctions, it is high time we gleaned some important lessons from Rhodesia which developed rapidly in spite of biting sanctions and international isolation.
So remarkable was Rhodesia’s development that when we attained our independence in 1980, this country was not only a net exporter of food but it also had a very strong currency.
In response to the economic sanctions, Smith’s Rhodesia pinned its survival on an ambitious import substitution programme as well as the integrity of its government.</blockquote>

WATCH: Ian Smith On How Rhodesia Busted UN Sanctions

While addressing Zanu-PF supporters at Cheziya Community Hall at Gokwe Centre yesterday, Zanu-PF secretary for War Veterans Victor Matemadanda said President Mnangagwa is a leader unlike his predecessor Robert Mugabe who was a ruler like Rhodesian leader Ian Smith.
Matemadanda said Mnangagwa is a team leader. Said Matemadanda:
<blockquote>There is a difference between a ruler and a leader. Since the Ian Smith regime until the end of the Mugabe regime, Zimbabwe was under a ruler. A ruler is selfish and makes decisions without considering how the decisions will impact on other people’s lives. Now we have a leader who is a team player. Mugabe was a detainee who refused to become a war veteran that is why he did not understand war veterans’ concerns.</blockquote>

Mnangagwa Is Not A Ruler Like Mugabe, Ian Smith: Matemadanda

Speaking at a workers forum meeting held in Harare last Friday, new ZCTU president, Peter Mutasa, lamented the sorry working conditions prevailing in the country, saying the situation was far much better under the racist Smith regime. Representatives of various workers unions all but agreed that working conditions under the Smith regime were far much better.
According to the ZCTU, more than 5 000 companies have shut down with thousands of workers losing their jobs in the last few years. The ZCTU says the situation was made worse by the 2015 July Constitutional Court ruling which permitted the axing of workers on three months’ notice.
