The South African Police Service (SAPS) on Tuesday, August 27, confirmed the arrest of at least 123 undocumented foreign nationals in Durban’s central business district (CBD).
In a statement, SAPS said the arrests were made during an early integrated operation, which also resulted in the recovery of counterfeit US Dollars equivalent to R4.1 million at Point, Durban CBD, on Tuesday morning. It added:

A multidisciplinary operation involving the police, Metro Police, Correctional Services, Home Affairs and other law enforcement agencies was aimed at stamping the authority of the state and raiding of hijacked buildings in and around the Durban CBD.
Six buildings were raided and one of them was found to be a municipality-owned building which was illegally occupied, and a person who was allegedly collecting rent money from illegal residents of that building was taken in for questioning.
During the operation, a total of 117 rounds of ammunition of various calibre of firearms and large amount of liquor were recovered and seized.
Two of the hijacked buildings were disconnected of water and electricity which were connected illegally. 
One suspect was also arrested after he was found in possession of cocaine and crystal meth as well as an undisclosed amount of money.

SAPS further stated that the operation is ongoing, with police actively searching for suspects believed to be in possession of illegal firearms.

The Patriotic Alliance (PA), a far-right South African opposition political party, says children of immigrants from Zimbabwe and other countries who were born and have lived in South Africa since birth, must be sent back to their countries of origin.

Said Kunene:

The problem of migrants … illegal migration is not perceived but it is real. It is practical. It is there. The child that is born in South Africa of migrants must go back home.
You have heavily pregnant women getting on buses at Beitbridge (or) in Lesotho going to Park Station, getting to Rahima Moosa hospital, and paying nurses R1,000 so that they can get on a bed.
South African pregnant women lie on the floor waiting to be attended. The child is born in South Africa. They get onto the bus, and take the child to Zimbabwe, Mozambique or Lesotho.
The fact that the child is now 17, does not matter, he or she is not a South African. They must all go back home with their illegal parents.

Kunene was reacting to a question posed by Nicholas Ngqabutho Mabhena, a prominent figure in the Zimbabwean community, who queried the PA’s position on children who were born to migrants but have attained the age of 17, living in South Africa.
However, RISE Mzansi’s Gauteng premier candidate, Vuyiswa Ramokgopa said children born in South Africa should be granted citizenship or resident status in South Africa. She said:

We have people who buy IDs at Home Affairs, we have all kinds of issues that are a function of a government that cannot enforce its laws.
We have a government which is unable to enforce the existing laws, which is why we have a perceived migration challenge right now.
The government itself cannot tell you how many illegal migrants are here and what are they doing etc. In my opinion, a child born in this country should be able to be a citizen or resident of this country.
They should be able to apply legally and receive legal permits. If that does not happen, they must go through the legal channels.

The IOL Elections Panel Discussion was held at the Sandton Radisson Blu Hotel in Johannesburg on Friday.
According to a report, as of 2022, approximately 773,246 Zimbabweans were residing in South Africa. Among them, 461,293 were men, and 311,953 were women.
Only 178,000 of these Zimbabweans living and working in South Africa hold valid permits, the Zimbabwe Exemption Permits (ZEPs).

Kunene Insists Children Of Illegal Migrants, Born In South Africa, Must Be Sent To Their Home Countries

South Africa’s ruling party, the African National Congress (ANC) has said illegal migrants are putting a heavy strain on the country’s fiscus with adverse effects on service delivery and high unemployment, among other things.
Mbalula made the remarks while addressing the ANC 9th Western Cape Provincial Conference over the weekend.
He said the issue of illegal migrants has been a ticking time bomb for the country. Mbalula said:

Illegal immigrants put a heavy strain on the fiscus with adverse effects on service delivery, the overstretched health sector, high unemployment and poverty.
Illegal immigrants have been a ticking time bomb for the country, which has been an albatross of the ANC-led government to accelerate service delivery at a faster pace and the outbreak of violence as attested to by the violent attacks in Diepsloot on June 21.

Mbalula implored communities to exercise restraint and avoid damage to property and life.
Last week Home Affairs Minister Aaron Motsoaledi briefed the ANC’s national working committee (NWC) on migration.
He suggested changes to immigration policies, including amendment proposals on citizenship, immigration and refugee protection.
Mbalula said the ANC’s NWC noted the briefing and emphasised the need for a balance between national interests and international solidarity, particularly within the Pan-African context.
On 07 June, this year, Motsoaledi extended the Zimbabwean Exemption Permit (ZEP), which would have expired at the end of June, to 31 December 2023.
The extension of the ZEP permit means that holders can enter and leave South Africa provided they comply with all other requirements for crossing the border.

ANC Says Illegal Immigrants A Burden On South Africa's Fiscus

Former South African President, Thabo Mbeki, has refuted claims that the bulk of crimes in that country are committed by foreign nationals.
Mbeki said it is wrong to paint all foreign nationals with the same brush, adding that foreigners who are committing crimes in South Africa must be arrested and deported.
He made the remarks during a conversation with students and diplomats in Pretoria. Said, Mbeki:

We need to walk away from the false notion that the bulk of crime in this country is caused by foreigners. It is not correct.
The bulk of crime in this country is caused is committed by South Africans. There are foreigners who commit crimes.
You should arrest them and charge them. This is what we should do and avoid labelling other people.

Mbeki also said South Africans are not xenophobic.
The former President said that South Africa owes African countries for its independence, especially countries such as Angola and Mozambique where thousands of people were killed by the racist regime for supporting the country’s struggle for freedom. He said:

The African continent has felt, for a very long time, very, very close to this country, that it has its own responsibility to assist in the liberation of the people of South Africa.
You take a country like Mozambique just across our border, which lost thousands and thousands of people killed because it was refusing to walk away from the support here. The same thing happened in Angola.
