President Emmerson has declared that Zimbabwe will draw from its heroic past, human capital, and mineral resources to confront and win against all forms of adversity.
Mnangagwa made the declaration on Thursday, 18 April, while addressing thousands of people who attended the country’s 44th Independence Day celebrations in Murambinda, Buhera, Manicaland Province.
He said Zimbabwe attained self-determination through blood and fire and will never be a colony again but rather shall assert itself in the comity of nations, marching towards Vision 2030, to become an upper-middle class economy.
The President said attempts to weaken the country’s currency and drive up inflation will fail. He said:

Government is alive to the adverse impact suffered by our people as a result of currency volatility and inflation.
Last week, my Administration launched a new structured gold-backed currency, the Zimbabwe Gold (ZiG). Nyika yedu irikuenderera mberi. Ilizwe lethu liya phambili.
Our ZiG currency is anchored by our God-given gold and other strategic mineral resources, as well as foreign currency reserves.
This development will boost our confidence and pride in our own national currency and further help protect our currency from attack by the country’s detractors.

He implored Zimbabweans to support the new currency which, according to the central bank, is backed by gold and other precious minerals.
Mnangagwa said Zimbabwe’s economy has been growing over the years despite the adverse effects of climate change and COVID-19. He said:

The overall economic outlook remains bright. Our country’s GDP is now exceeding US$47 billion up from US$16 billion in 2018.
This shows that we, the descendants of the Great Munhumutapa, are resilient, focused, determined and hardworking people. Zimbabwe is winning.

He also expressed confidence that Zimbabwe will become an important player in the oil industry following the discovery of gas reserves in Muzarabani. He said:

In the wake of recent discoveries, Zimbabwe is on course to be a player in the oil, gas and petrochemical industry.
The country’s lithium mining and processing portfolio is growing, including here in Buhera District.
This will see Zimbabwe sustainably exploiting this strategic new energy resource, for the socio-economic development of our people.
We are also contributing to addressing the global climate change crisis.

Mnangagwa condemned violence against women in all its forms, saying traditions and practices that promote the exploitation of women should be discarded. He said:

All forms of violence against women and children are not acceptable in our nation. Under the new Marriages Act, those found guilty of arranging child marriages and pledging children for marriage now face deterrent punishment. Let us protect our children from retrogressive traditions and practices.
</blockquote>
Mnangagwa also said the welfare of civil servants remains a priority and their conditions of service will be reviewed from time to time in line with economic sustainability.

<h2>Full statement by Citizens’ Coalition for Change (CCC) spokesperson Fadzayi Mahere to mark Zimbabwe’s 43rd Independence Anniversary on 18 April 2023.</h2>

Today, Zimbabwe celebrates 43 years of independence. We join the nation in honouring this important day as we look to the sacrifice made by those who fought on our behalf for the constitutional entitlement of one man, one vote.
The liberation struggle was anchored on the fight for free, fair and credible elections.
We seek to complete the mission this year to ensure we win Zimbabwe for change by winning the election and taking power.
As a citizens’ movement, the Citizens’ Coalition for Change acknowledges the effort and sacrifices of the soldiers, war veterans, war collaborators and citizens, living and departed, who contributed to attaining the liberation of our nation from colonial rule.
We acknowledge and respect all national processes that relate to the history and legacy of Zimbabwe as this is the collective definition of our identity as a people.
Independence Day belongs to all Zimbabwean citizens. It is a national event which, in a functional nation, ought to be inclusive, non-partisan and be a moment of pride and celebration for all members of our society.
When our forebears took up arms, they were guided by liberation ideals including universal adult suffrage, sovereignty of the people and their will, as well as shared prosperity for the masses.
For this reason, the movement participates in these platforms, standing on the belief that these are national events, not partisan processes. We do so for our country and for the collective being of the people.
As election day beckons, we are mindful that the 43-year-old bad governance crisis has rendered the Liberation promise empty. Our aspirations for Zimbabwe are yet to be realized.
The latest corruption expose betrays a sad pattern of a rich nation being poorly managed and looted by political elites at the expense of the citizens.
Like every other corruption scandal that has preceded it over the last 43 years, it is an indictment of the liberation dream and the promise of independence.
This is not the Zimbabwe that the citizens had hoped for. We urge every citizen to ensure that they perform their civic duty by voting en mass in the coming election for ethical, competent leaders who will usher in a New Great Zimbabwe with dignity, prosperity and freedom for all.

"Not Yet Uhuru", CCC Statement On Zimbabwe's 43rd Independence Anniversary

Amnesty International (AI) says as Zimbabweans mark forty-three years of independence from colonial rule, the reality is that the civic space is shrinking rapidly.
In a statement released this Tuesday, Amnesty International’s Deputy Director for East and Southern Africa Flavia Mwangovya, said Zimbabwean authorities have criminalised dissent against political activists and human rights defenders. Reads the statement:

Forty-three years after independence, authorities are still yet to guarantee in practice the rights to freedom of expression, association and peaceful assembly which are increasingly being threatened despite being guaranteed under the constitution and international law.
The right to freedom of peaceful assembly has continuously been violated and undermined with the authorities refusing to give clearance for some of the main opposition party’s rallies, arresting and convicting peaceful protesters and using unnecessary and excessive force to stop protests.
As Zimbabwe approaches elections later this year, freedom of expression, association and peaceful assembly have come under increasing attack.
Dissenting voices are being criminalized, with some opposition activists put in lengthy pre-trial detentions.
Authorities must stop criminalizing dissent and ensure the levelling of the playing field as the country fast approaches the elections.
The opposition must be free to carry out their campaigns and individuals and groups must be protected from politically motivated violence.
Authorities must promote, protect and uphold the rights to freedom of expression, association and peaceful assembly, as well as guarantee the socio-economic rights of every Zimbabwean.

Zimbabwe's 43rd Independence Commemoration Marred By Decline In Freedoms - Amnesty International

The United States of America has congratulated Zimbabwe on the occasion of the country’s 43rd independence anniversary.
In <a href="https://www.state.gov/zimbabwe-national-day-2/">a statement</a> issued by the U.S. Department of State on 18 April 2023, Secretary of State Antony Blinken said his country remains committed to standing with the people of Zimbabwe to promote democratic institutions. Reads the statement:

On behalf of the Government of the United States of America, I congratulate the Zimbabwean people as you celebrate the 43rd anniversary of your independence.
The United States remains committed to standing with the people of Zimbabwe, as we have since your independence in 1980, to work together to promote democratic institutions, equitable economic growth, public health, and food security.
Zimbabwe has the chance to set itself on a path to promote citizen engagement and to respect human rights. We will continue to support the people of Zimbabwe to live longer, more prosperous, and healthier lives.

Zimbabwe and the United States have had strained relations since the turn of the Millenium when the former embarked on the land redistribution programme.
The United States responded to Zimbabwe’s land reform policy by imposing economic sanctions on the southern African country through the Zimbabwe Democracy and Economic Recovery Act of 2001.
A <a href="https://georgewbush-whitehouse.archives.gov/news/releases/2001/12/20011221-15.html">statement</a> issued by then U.S President George Bush on 21 December 2001 after signing ZDERA reads in part:

Section 4(c) of the Act purports to direct the executive branch to oppose and vote against the extension of loans or the cancellation of debt in international financial institutions unless and until I make a certification or national interest determination.
I am concerned that this provision burdens my constitutional authority in the area of foreign affairs to conduct negotiations and cast votes in international organizations.
I will construe the provision as being subject to my exclusive authority to negotiate or vote in international financial institutions.

United States Congratulates Zimbabwe On 43rd Independence Anniversary

The Pfura (Mt Darwin) Rural District Council says the hosting of Independence Day celebrations in Mt Darwin has brought with it a lot of benefits to the community.
All the feeder roads in Mt Darwin Township are undergoing maintenance by the local authority and the Rural Infrastructure Development Agency (RIDA), formerly the District Development Fund (DDF).
Also, the community has seen load-shedding hours being restricted to about four hours daily.
The curtailment of load shedding hours has resulted in improved water supply from ZINWA as it requires a minimum of 18 hours to pump water to all the reservoirs, which supply the eight locations in Mt Darwin.
Speaking to <a href="https://www.herald.co.zw/independence-celebrations-bring-benefits-to-mt-darwin/">The Herald</a> on Wednesday, Pfura Rural District Council chief executive officer Stanslous Nyachowe, said:

Mt Darwin will never be the same again as the hosting of the celebrations has brought with it a number of infrastructural developments, chief among these being the construction of a new stadium which will be the main venue.
It has changing rooms, public toilets, a tartan athletics track, a security fence, a solar-powered borehole for irrigation and some flood lights are to be installed.
Terraces for the stadium are on the cards as well.
Pfura Stadium is also having a face-lift as the surrounding precast wall, and changing rooms are being upgraded.
The much-needed public toilets, which were non-existent, are under construction and will be ready for use when the children’s party is held on 17 April 2023.
The local authority has also written to all business owners to spruce up their buildings and this is improving the aesthetics of the centre.

Mt Darwin is home to more than 10 000 people, who will benefit from the activities associated with Independence Day celebrations.
The Independence Anniversary Celebrations will be held on 18 April at Mount Darwin High School, Mount Darwin Centre.
The Mt Darwin community will also be treated to Zimbabwe’s biggest football fixture dubbed the Battle of Zimbabwe pitting Dynamos and Highlanders in the Independence Day Cup.
An estimated 45 000 people are expected to attend the Celebrations.
Alick Macheso and Paradzai Mesi will provide entertainment for the main Independence celebrations.

Independence Day Celebrations Expected To Benefit Mt Darwin Community

The Premier Soccer League (PSL) has announced the postponement of the first edition of the “Battle of Zimbabwe”, the premiership match between Highlanders and Dynamos.
Bosso and DeMbare were scheduled to clash on Saturday 15 April at Barbourfields Stadium in Bulawayo but the Sports and Recreation Commission (SRC) has directed PSL to postpone the match.
In a statement issued this Wednesday, PSL Communications and Media Liason Officer Kudzai Bare said the match has been postponed as the two clubs will participate in the Independence Day activities which start on 16 April. Said Bare:

Please be advised that the Castle Lager Premier Soccer League match between Highlanders FC and Dynamos FC scheduled to be played on Saturday 15 April 2023 has been postponed.
This comes following a directive from the Sports and Recreation Commission for the teams to participate in the Independence Day activities which will commence on the 16th of April 2023.
The postponed fixture will be rescheduled in due course.

The other eight Castle Lager Premier Soccer League matches scheduled for Friday, Saturday and Sunday will go ahead as planned.

SRC Orders The Postponement Of The "Battle Of Zimbabwe"

The number of people who were killed in road traffic accidents on Independence Day this year was very low compared to the same period last year, police have said.
In spite of a slight rise in the number of accidents recorded this past Independence Day, compared to 2020, 2 people lost their lives compared to last year when 11 people were killed in accidents. National police spokesperson Assistant Commissioner Paul Nyathi said:
<blockquote>The Zimbabwe Republic Police informs the nation that two (02) people died in two (02) fatal road traffic accidents which were recorded on Independence Day compared to eleven (11) people who died during the same period in the year 2020. No major fatal road accidents were recorded on the country’s highways during the holiday.</blockquote>
According to the statistics availed by police, the total number of road traffic accidents recorded in 2020 was 46, in 2021 the number rose to 52.
The total number of fatal road accidents fell from 5 in 2020 to 2 in 2021. Two people died on Independence Day this year down from 11 last year. The number of people injured also fell from 20 to 18. Asst Comm Nyathi added:
<blockquote>Police are concerned with the loss of human life on the roads and appeals to all road users to be safety conscious when driving by respecting other road users.
Let us all play our part to make roads safe and not death traps and above all comply with all road rules and regulations.</blockquote>

Independence Day Fatalities In Massive Decline

Opposition MDC Alliance led by Nelson Chamisa has joined the nation in commemorating Independence Day and called the nation to “fight for our freedom” observing that there was no freedom to speak of yet.
The party has always argued that the ruling ZANU PF liberated the nation from British rule but later took away the freedoms they had fought for.
MDC often cites human rights violations by the state as evidence that Zimbabwe was yet to attain freedom. The party posted on social media platforms this Sunday:
<blockquote> The MDC Alliance joins the nation in commemorating Independence Day – a day that we cherish &amp; respect. Time To Fight For Our Own Freedom - MDC Alliance

Luke Tamborinyoka, the former spokesperson for the late former Prime Minister of Zimbabwe, Morgan Tsvangirai has said there is nothing to celebrate on Independence Day since there is no freedom that was fought for. The <a href="https://nehandaradio.com/2021/04/18/luke-ing-the-beast-in-the-eye-independence-without-freedoms-is-empty/">Nehanda Radio columnist</a> said:
<blockquote>Today is Independence Day—a once-hallowed day that has since lost its glitz because the requisite freedoms associated with the occasion are glaringly absent in this cursed nation.
Coming in the week that Zanu PF has introduced a Constitutional Amendment Bill that seeks to create an imperial President—the same week that the same analogue party has sought to resurrect its terror troops popularly known as the Green Bombers—this year’s Independence Day is a hollow occasion whose emptiness has just rendered it utterly meaningless.
The sons and daughters of this land paid the ultimate price in the hope that their struggle would yield a country that respects basic freedoms, particularly the rights and freedoms of speech, movement and assembly. Alas, political independence came alone, shorn of the requisite freedoms for which many lost their limbs so that the whims and hopes of future generations would walk again!
The right to vote, which was one of the key grievances of the repressed black majority, has been routinely betrayed as evidenced by pilfered polls that have resulted in the successive vicious cycle of disputed polls.
Zimbabweans have now been brazenly denied the right to vote as the regime hides under the Covid-19 pandemic to avoid the holding of by-elections that are long overdue, even as the regime has held its own DCC elections and allowed its surrogates to hold their elective Congress.
Today, especially under Emmerson Mnangagwa, we commemorate the day when a host of political prisoners of conscience have needlessly been arrested and are currently detained on trumped-up charges while criminal elite is roaming scot-free. Our real crisis is that in 1980, independence came without the requisite freedoms, rendering any claims of independence trite and vacuous.
The conviction of Makomborero Haruzivishe and the repression levels that have simply run amok are making any claims to independence a sick joke.
Mnangagwa has not only proved to be a Robert Mugabe on steroids but is even proving to be a threat to the repressive legacy of Hitler’s Third Reich. But perhaps the biggest tragedy is that Zimbabwe’s independence came without the attendant freedoms.
Renowned poet and author, Freedom T. V. Nyamubaya, in an epic poem, so aptly captures the dilemma of a vacuous political independence that came without the requisite freedoms. The following poem by the respected poet captures Zimbabwe’s parlous predicament through an epic metaphorical illustration which only a luminary writer could muster:
Once upon a time
there was a boy and a girl
forced to leave their home
by armed robbers .
The boy was Independence
The girl was Freedom
While fighting back , they got married
After the big war they went back home
Everybody prepared for the big wedding
Drinks and food abounded
Even the disabled felt able
The whole village gathered waiting
Freedom and Independence were more popular than Jesus
Independence came
But Freedom was not there
An old woman saw Freedom’s shadow passing
Walking through the crowd, Freedom to the gate
All the same, they celebrated for Independence
Independence is now a senior bachelor
Some people still talk to him
Many others take no notice
A lot still say: it was a fake marriage
You can’t be a husband without a wife
Fruitless and barren Independence staggers to old age
Since her shadow, Freedom hasn’t come
Indeed, there is nothing to celebrate. Independence day has become a tortuous and painful day that reminds us of what might have been. A fleeting moment that encapsulates a missed monumental opportunity.

There will be no public gatherings in celebrating the country’s 41st Independence anniversary on 18 April, President Emmerson Mnangagwa has said.
In an interview at State House in Harare on Saturday, President Mnangagwa appealed to the nation to uphold the measures put in place by Government and the World Health Organisation’s COVID-19 protocols. He said:
<blockquote>Whereas I would love to see our population revelling day and night celebrating this freedom, this independence which gives our people dignity and self-determination, but because of the Covid-19 conditions, I appeal to our people to restrain from massive gatherings. Let them observe the measures we have put in place.
The WHO protocols must be observed. For instance, just now as a result of this Easter that has passed again, there is a spike in cases.
I would not encourage our people to assemble in huge groups, let us take these measures and preserve the lives of ourselves, our beloved ones and everyone’s life.
It is important. Enjoying ourselves will always be there when the time is correct when the time is suitable for us to do so.</blockquote>
This comes as Zimbabwe has registered a spike in new coronavirus infections in recent days, with the majority of the cases reported at Sacred Heart Girls High School located in Matabeleland South.

The Zimbabwe Congress Of Trade Unions in their independence day message yesterday expressed their displeasure over the way the current administration is running the country and said corruption, segregation and thuggery were the order of the day and now people are looking back at Ian Smith’s oppressive days with fondness, New Zimbabwe reports.
ZCTU Secretary General Japhet Moyo in a statement on the independence day said:
<blockquote>It is a shame and indeed serious indictment for our leadership that people are looking back with nostalgia and fondness to the yesteryears of Ian Smith’s better economic conditions despite Smith’s oppressive and racist rule,
An ordinary worker during the colonial era had a better economic lifestyle compared to today’s worker. Independence, which was supposed to be a full package turned out piecemeal. Corruption, violence, fear, thuggery, deprivation, segregation, inequalities and repression are the order of the day.
The laws of the land are not being fully upheld to protect workers and citizens. Our working environment has gradually deteriorated from independence.</blockquote>
Moyo also lamented the country’s deteriorating infrastructure and said hospitals are now in a poor state, schools were under-equipped and roads were no longer navigable as they are now full of potholes.

The Zimbabwe National Students Union (ZINASU) has issued the following statement on Zimbabwe celebrating 40 years of independence and said the day exposed us of our poor health systems.
The statement further reiterates that they that hijacked the dreams of many a Zimbabweans must be stopped and they can only be stopped by a revolution.

<blockquote>The Zimbabwe National Students Union joins the rest of the nation in commemorating 40 years of independence. It is a 40th birthday we all wish came under different circumstances than we have today.
This day comes as the nation and the world at large are seized with the Covid-19 pandemic that has taken away thousands of lives in the world and 3 lives in our motherland.
It has exposed our poor health systems 40 years after independence. It comes while the nation is under a lockdown that was imposed without any plans for social safety nets, exposing an unprepared, uncaring and a clueless government 40 years after independence. Such is the story of the 40 year old former jewel and breadbasket of Africa that was turned into a begging basket.
Zimbabwe turns 40 at a time when our academic calendar has been disrupted by the Covid-19 pandemic and found the Ministry unprepared to deal with such a disruption when they could have simply entered into agreements with mobile network operators and students could be accessing online learning at zero rate today, such was supposed to be how a 40 year old Ministry could have done!
40 years after the attainment of independence, our education is unaffordable to the poor man and the much-talked education for all by 2020 is in smoke and shambles. It is a time when education was supposed to be accessible to all and affordable for the poorest among us.
40 years into democracy, grown up students are suspended, expelled and threatened for asking simple questions about their own welfare. 40 years after independence, academic freedom, now a Constitutional right, remains a dream. Students are under constant surveillance with the paranoid state investing in spies in institutions in a manner that would make Smith green with envy. Such is the sad character of our 40 year old democracy, with the broader national picture the ugliest you can find on earth, murders, abductions, torture, kangaroo arrests, lawfare and suppression that would make medieval chiefs envious.
40 years after self rule, the means of economic production remain in the filthy hands of the few, making all of this a simple transition from white colonial masters to black oligarchs with no plan to emancipate the motive forces of the Revolution. Today the economy is at rocket speed towards the deepest end of hell thanks to the mafia style economic pollution they are calling policy.
It has been 40 years of the betrayal of the Zimbabwean dream by the hijackers of the Revolution who have tried to magnify their role in the Liberation of Zimbabwe, believed their lies and have for long believed their imagined roles in the struggle for Zimbabwe entitle them to abuse the rest of the nation and its precious resources. They must be stopped. They will be stopped.
A revolution is the only way to a true realization of the dreams of the hijacked revolution!

The national broadcaster will tonight host a virtual concert to commemorate Zimbabwe’s 40th independence, The Herald reports. The concert will also include a top 40 count down.
This was revealed by the Infomation, Publicity and Broadcasting Services Minister Monica Mutsvangwa in her independence speech. Honourable Mutsvangwa said:
<blockquote>For entertainment, the national broadcaster will be hosting a virtual concert on Ztv along with a top 40 count down. We will try to create an atmosphere through the media both print and electronic. On this note, I would like to wish all Zimbabweans a happy 40th Independence Day celebration. I would like to remind you to stay at home and maintain social distancing so that we remain health and celebrate many more years of independence</blockquote>

ZTV To Host A Virtual Independence Concert Tonight

President Emmerson Mnangagwa will make a televised independence address tomorrow since the country is in lockdown due to the global COVID-19 pandemic, The Herald reports.
This was revealed by the presidential spokesperson George Charamba who said:
<blockquote>The President will make a televised address to the nation on Independence Day in respect to the efforts to contain Covid-19. The address will be broadcast from State House so he will reach Zimbabweans through television and other media platforms.</blockquote>
Zimbabwe celebrates its 40th independence from the British Colonial system tomorrow and people cannot congregate because of the lockdown restrictions due to the COVID-19 pandemic. The independence celebrations which were supposed to be held out of Harare for the first time in 40 years were postponed due to COVID-19.

ED To Address The Nation On TV On Independence Day

The United States of America has congratulated Zimbabwe on attaining 39 years of independence.
Through its embassy in Harare, the US wrote a message on Twitter which reads as follows:
<blockquote>We congratulate Zimbabwe on 39 years of independence today. The United States remains a committed partner to the people of Zimbabwe and shares your hopes for growth, prosperity and a brighter future.
The United and Zimbabwe have had frosty relations since 2001 when the former imposed sanctions on the latter.</blockquote>
Despite maintaining an embassy in Harare and providing humanitarian assistance running into the millions, the US has renewed the targeted measure on a yearly basis.
There have been calls recently for the United States to remove the sanctions. World-renowned economic commentator Steve Hanke said that the sanctions should be scrapped immediately;
<blockquote>Sanctions should be dropped immediately. Sanctions don’t work, the history of economic and financial sanctions is one failure after another, the production of all kinds of negative, unintended consequences.</blockquote>

United States Congratulates Zimbabwe On 39th Uhuru Annivesary

MDC president Nelson Chamisa said that ZANU PF wants to distort and rewrite the history of the liberation struggle to suit its own narrative.
In an interview with Newsday reporter Blessed Mhlanga, Chamisa said nobody should claim ownership of the liberation struggle as it was not a partisan effort, but a people’s effort. Said Chamisa:
<blockquote>They [ZANU PF] want to distort history and rewrite it in their own terms, in their own persuasion, but clearly the struggle of the liberation of our country was not a sole effort.
It was not a partisan effort, it was not a political effort, and it was a people’s effort. The liberation struggle was and still remains a people’s project.
Nobody should appropriate themselves the liberation of this country, this country belongs to its owners and authors being the people under the auspices of the almighty God and nobody is supposed to appropriate the sole proprietorship of our country.
We fought as a people, yes, we used different vehicles, Zanu was one of them, Zapu was another and any other vehicle, that vehicle can’t become the destination. The destination was a liberated Zimbabwe.</blockquote>
Zimbabwe celebrates Independence Day on April 18 every year. However, over the past two decades, since the formation of the opposition political party MDC, there have been divided opinion over the Day’s relevance.

Chamisa Tells ZANU PF Not To Rewrite History Of The Liberation Struggle

In a message congratulating Zimbabwe’s 38th Independence anniversary commemorations on Wednesday, United Nations (UN) secretary-general and chairperson of The Elders, an African progress panel, Mr Kofi Annan, said Zimbabwe is on the road to recovery with the upcoming elections being an important step.
Said Annan:
<blockquote>Zimbabwe is on the long road to recovery. The upcoming elections are an important first step. Only a long-term process of national renewal will allow the country to reach its full potential. Sustained action is needed to eradicate fraud and corruption, and establish an inclusive approach to economic recovery and development.</blockquote>
He also added that Government should listen to the concerns of civil society around rule of law, security and a fair process of electoral registration to ensure lwgitimacy.

Introduction
Zimbabwe did not come cheap. It took a protracted and grueling struggle to liberate the country from the shackles of colonial bondage. The patriotic sons and daughters of this land died while some were raped or maimed in the selfless national duty to liberate this country.
Today, we remember them.
Today, we salute the heroic struggle of the people of Zimbabwe in consigning that dark epoch to the dustbins of history.
Today, we mark the advent of our political independence and the stoic gallantry that it took to restore the dignity of the black Zimbabwean.
Today, we stand with pride as a heroic people who took up arms to fight oppression.
Indeed, we are a nation of heroes.
Our mission: Completing the unfinished business
As a new generation and as a post-liberation political formation, our mandate and our mission is to be the compass of that struggle by ensuring that the people‘s aspirations are fulfilled.
We so much cherish the aspirational and inspirational values of the liberation struggle to the extent that we take great exception if those sacred values are betrayed or dismembered. At the core of that liberation was the legitimate demand for one-man-one vote and that is why we are pressing for the sovereign expression of the will of the people through a free, fair and credible election.
Our call for electoral reforms is very much attached to the core value of the liberation struggle which was the right to vote.
One cannot cherish the liberation struggle but negate in every way the people’s right to free expression through a credible election. That is tantamount to a betrayal of the liberation struggle whose meaning and import we cherish and remember on this very day.
I wish to restate that our generation’s struggle for democracy stands on the shoulders of the earlier struggle of liberation. As a nation, we liberated ourselves so that we could truly be free in every respect. Therefore our democratic struggle represents our avowed wish to complete the agenda of the liberation struggle and not to negate it!
We only wish to complete the unfinished business of that sacred struggle that we commemorate on this Independence Day. So great was the meaning of that expression that we feel a day is not enough for a nation’s full expression. That is why as a party we in the MDC-T have declared this April to be an independence month. A day’s celebration is an understatement of the significance of independence in our nation’s history. In the truly new dispensation that begins after the next election; we will remain committed to an Independence month and not a mere independence day. We will commit a whole month to the truly convivial and carnival celebration of the heroism of the people of this land in fighting tyranny and oppression.
Independence: a personal eulogy
At a personal level, I will today attend the national event and the national commemorations of this great event.
Independence is a great day whose meaning and significance go beyond the narrow strictures and confines of political party affiliation. We must restore the full meaning of our independence into a great day whose appeal must go to Zimbabweans of all shades and political colours.
It is belittling of this great day to give the impression that our liberation was fought for a single political party. It was a truly national liberation that must appeal to the kaleidoscopic and full variety of our political milieu!
All the leaders and members of the MDC-T will be attending today’s independence celebrations in the various areas where they will be taking place. In my case, I will be joining other national leaders in giving this day its true meaning and value. It is a great day that deserves to be commemorated by all of us.
A tribute to the people of Zimbabwe
I would want to use this public holiday to pay tribute to the honest and hard working people of Zimbabwe who are slugging it out under very difficult circumstances.
The totality of Zimbabweans must be respected and thanked because it is them who fought the liberation struggle. All Zimbabweans deserve respect, including war veterans, dead and alive, war collaborators, ex-detainees and those who were in their fathers’ loins and in their mothers’ wombs.
We pay tribute to SMEs for sustaining Zimbabweans in the face of brutal mismanagement of the country. We say thank you to the nurses, doctors, teachers, and all civil servants, those serving in defence, in the police, intelligence and in correctional services. Thank you for working under very difficult circumstances.
We say thank you to all those in the diplomatic corps, in the various government ministries and to all Zimbabwean students in and outside the country.
We want to call for discipline, accountability, transparency and uprightness.
We want to thank all religious leaders and congregants for sustaining the moral fabric and dignity of the people. Thank you to all Diasporans, to small scale entrepreneurs, petrol attendants, gardeners, commuter omnibus drivers and their assistants all of whom are often forgotten about.
Soon—and very soon–we will be unveiling a robust policy programme that will address all the challenges that you face.
