The Zimbabwe Republic Police (ZRP) has released the names of five of the seven victims of the Inter Africa Bus accident which occurred at the 330-kilometre peg along Harare-Bulawayo Road on Sunday morning.
Police said the bus, which had 43 passengers on board, rammed into the back of a stationary Freightliner truck with no passengers on board at around 3:30 AM.
Seven people died on the spot while 22 others were injured. Of the 22 victims who were injured, six were treated and discharged and 16 others were admitted at Gweru Provincial Hospital.
The victims are Mutanga Brian, a male adult of Bocha, Marange, Manyise Madubeko (45), a male adult of 4th Street, Bulawayo, Ncube Sinqobile (43), a female adult of Xanti Village, Esigodini, Muchemwa Matienga (62), a male adult of Lasper Road, Harrisvale, Bulawayo and Mafukidze Edmen Collin (39), a male adult of Overspill Epworth.
The other two victims were yet to be identified by their next of kin.
Commissioner Paul Nyathi confirmed another road traffic accident which occurred on Sunday at around 1:30 AM at the 72-kilometre peg along Harare-Wedza Road.
The driver of a Nissan pick-up vehicle was killed while the passenger was injured when the vehicle veered off the road before hitting a stationary Scania truck with three passengers on board. Said Nyathi:

The body of the victim was taken to Marondera Provincial Hospital for post mortem while the injured person is admitted at the same hospital.
The Zimbabwe Republic Police implores motorists to exercise caution and be alert on the roads, especially when driving early in the morning or during the night. 
Above all, motorists should avoid speeding and always follow all road rules and regulations to safeguard human lives.

ZRP Releases Names Of Victims In Sunday’s Inter Africa Bus Accident

Fifteen (15) people were injured on Monday morning when a bus they were travelling on veered off the road and overturned along the Harare-Bulawayo Road.
The Zimbabwe Republic Police (ZRP) confirmed that a Govasburg bus, carrying 30 passengers, lost control at the 244-kilometer peg, overturned, and landed on its right side. The injured people were admitted to Gweru Provincial Hospital for treatment.
While the exact cause of the accident has not yet been determined, common factors contributing to bus accidents in Zimbabwe include drivers exceeding speed limits and aggressive driving. Overloading buses with passengers and goods further exacerbates the risk, making them harder to control.
In a separate incident earlier, two people lost their lives, and several others were injured when an Inter Africa bus veered off the road and overturned at Umguza Bridge along the Bulawayo-Gwanda Highway on Saturday.
Bulawayo Chief Fire Officer Mhlangano Moyo said the Inter Africa bus, which was travelling from Mutare to Bulawayo city centre, had 50 passengers on board at the time of the accident.
He said two passengers died, while 43 were injured. The Bulawayo Fire Brigade managed to rescue three passengers trapped in the wreckage, and the injured were transported to Mpilo Central Hospital for medical attention.

15 Injured As Govasburg Bus Overturns On Harare-Bulawayo Road

About seventy-five (75) Pakame High School learners narrowly escaped death on Sunday when their hired Inter Africa bus was involved in an accident along the Harare-Bulawayo Highway.
The bus was travelling from Harare to the school which is located in Shurugwi, Midlands Province.
ZRP spokesperson Assistant Commissioner Paul Nyathi confirmed the incident to <a href="https://www.newsday.co.zw/local-news/article/200011245/75-pupils-cheat-death-in-bus-inferno">NewsDay</a>, adding that all pupils escaped unhurt, but some lost property in the fire. He said;

The accident occurred at the 181km peg along the Harare-Bulawayo Highway.
The accident occurred after a pirate taxi driver suddenly encroached onto his (bus driver’s) lane.
All pupils escaped, but some lost their property.

Commenting about the accident, Primary and Secondary Education Ministry spokesperson Taungana Ndoro said:

We have policies and circulars that we have put in place for school authorities and transporters to exercise maximum care with children on board to avoid such unfortunate incidents.

The Pakame High School accident comes after a Tynwald High School bus was involved in a fatal accident in Juliusdale, Nyanga on Friday, 14 October 2022 around 7 PM.
Reports suggested that the driver was speeding and failed to negotiate a sharp curve. The accident claimed the lives of six learners and one teacher.
Most road traffic accidents in Zimbabwe are attributed to human error. Drivers often make mistakes such as speeding, driving under the influence of alcohol, fatigue, or distractions like mobile phones.

Bus Catches Fire With 75 Pakame High School Learners On Board

A gang of five armed robbers pounced on the Inter Africa depot in Masvingo in the industrial area on Wednesday and got away with US$14 524 and ZAR13 450.
ZPR spokesperson in Masvingo Province, Inspector Kudakwashe Dhewa, told <a href="https://masvingomirror.com/armed-robbers-hit-masvingo-inter-africa-depot/">The Mirror</a> that the robbery happened on Wednesday around 1 AM.
He said the five robbers were armed with a pistol and iron bars.
The suspects first entered Quality Gas Garage where they tied Taurai Mlambo who was sleeping in his vehicle and Knowledge Mutsananguri who was guarding the premises.
They then demanded the names of the Inter Africa depot security guards from the two before they tied them using shoelaces and bundled them into Mutsananguri’s vehicle.
The suspects drove Mutsananguri’s vehicle to the Inter Africa gate and called the security guards by their names.
However, the security guards did not respond and the robbers force-opened the gate using iron bars and two of them drove into the garage.
The other three robbers then jumped over the precast wall and manhandled Kudakwashe Katiza (36) who was sleeping inside a bus.
They robbed him of his phone before tying two other guards’ feet and hands with shoelaces.
The gang then proceeded to an office and opened a safe using an iron bar and took all the money it contained.
They then drove away in an unidentified vehicle.
The security guards managed to free themselves and reported the matter to the police.
Depot manager, Cephas Machaka (36) attended the scene together with police officers.
Machaka confirmed that indeed, US$14 524 and ZAR13 450 was in the safe.

Masvingo Inter Africa Depot Robbed

A major player in the transport sector, Leonard Mukumba, is a candidate in ZANU PF Manicaland provincial elections that are being held this Tuesday.
Mukumba, who owns Inter Africa Buses, is contesting the post of secretary for transport.
He has previously refused to join politics insisting he wanted to focus on his business.
In the 2018 general elections, ZANU PF supporters asked Mukumba to contest for the Makoni South Member of Parliament seat but he refused to budge.
A ZANU PF central committee member in Manicaland, who refused to be named, confirmed Mukumba’s candidature to NewsDay.
In a recent interview with the publication at the African Apostolic Church’s Mapembe shrine in Odzi, Mukumba, who is a bishop in the church, said he was one of the biggest transport operators in Zimbabwe. He said:

I was blessed by Paul Mwazha to become one of the biggest transport operators in the country, I joined the African Apostolic Church in 1989 and I could accompany our leader Mwazha who prophesied that I was going to be a transport mogul.

Besides Inter Africa buses, Mukumba also owns Blue Horizon trucking company among other businesses.
The African Apostolic Church was founded by Paul Mwazha and the congregates had gathered at Mapembe Shrine to celebrate his 103rd birthday.

Inter Africa Buses Owner Contests In ZANU PF Internal Polls

An Inter Africa bus carrying 53 passengers overturned after its brakes failed at a police roadblock just 10km outside the city of Masvingo on Thursday morning.
Masvingo provincial assistant police spokesperson Sergeant Crispen Gwashu confirmed the freak accident. He said that 2 passengers were admitted at Masvingo Provincial Hospital and were said to be in a stable condition. The rest are said to have only sustained minor injuries.
Sergeant Gwashu had this to say:
<blockquote>The bus was coming from Bulawayo when the driver who was speeding failed to stop at the check-point.
There was a Nissan Navara vehicle which was at the check point and the driver side swiped the vehicle as he tried to manoeuvre the bus to the left side resulting in it veering off the road and overturning.</blockquote>
