Fifteen (15) people were injured on Monday morning when a bus they were travelling on veered off the road and overturned along the Harare-Bulawayo Road.
The Zimbabwe Republic Police (ZRP) confirmed that a Govasburg bus, carrying 30 passengers, lost control at the 244-kilometer peg, overturned, and landed on its right side. The injured people were admitted to Gweru Provincial Hospital for treatment.
While the exact cause of the accident has not yet been determined, common factors contributing to bus accidents in Zimbabwe include drivers exceeding speed limits and aggressive driving. Overloading buses with passengers and goods further exacerbates the risk, making them harder to control.
In a separate incident earlier, two people lost their lives, and several others were injured when an Inter Africa bus veered off the road and overturned at Umguza Bridge along the Bulawayo-Gwanda Highway on Saturday.
Bulawayo Chief Fire Officer Mhlangano Moyo said the Inter Africa bus, which was travelling from Mutare to Bulawayo city centre, had 50 passengers on board at the time of the accident.
He said two passengers died, while 43 were injured. The Bulawayo Fire Brigade managed to rescue three passengers trapped in the wreckage, and the injured were transported to Mpilo Central Hospital for medical attention.

15 Injured As Govasburg Bus Overturns On Harare-Bulawayo Road

Four learners died on Wednesday afternoon after they were thrown out of a truck they were travelling on following a collision with an Inter Africa bus along the Harare-Masvingo Road.
The Zimbabwe Republic Police (ZRP) said that the truck and the bus were travelling in the same direction, towards Masvingo.
The truck had 22 pupils on board while the bus had 59 passengers on board.
The Inter Africa bus hit the driver’s door of the T35 truck, forcing it to veer off the road to the right.
All the learners were thrown out of the truck and one of them died on the spot while three others died upon admission at Beatrice Hospital. Police said:

The ZRP confirms a fatal road traffic accident that occurred at the 81-kilometre peg along Harare-Masvingo Road on 31/05/23 at around 1600 hours in which four people were killed whilst twenty-one others were injured.
An Inter Africa Zhongtong bus travelling towards Masvingo with 59 passengers on board hit the driver’s door of a T35 truck travelling in the same direction whilst carrying 22 pupils, resulting in the T35 truck veering off the road to the right.
All pupils were thrown out of the truck and subsequently, one pupil died on the spot whilst three others died upon admission at Beatrice Hospital.
The bodies of the victims were taken to Beatrice Hospital mortuary for post-mortem whilst the injured are admitted at same hospital.

This was not the first time in May 2023 that an Inter Africa bus was involved in an accident that affected schoolchildren.
On 08 May, fifteen (15) people were injured when an Inter Africa bus they were travelling on was involved in an accident at the 68km-peg along the Nyanga-Rwenya Road.
13 of the injured were learners from <a href="https://pindula.co.zw/Emmanuel_Secondary_School">Emmanuel High School</a> and the other two were the bus driver and conductor.
The accident occurred near the spot where the fatal Regina Coeli bus disaster occurred in 1991.
The bus had 73 learners on board who were on their way to the school for the start of the second term.
On 07 May, another Inter Africa bus with seventy-five (75) <a href="https://pindula.co.zw/Pakame_Secondary_School">Pakame High School</a> learners on board was involved in an accident along the Harare-Bulawayo Highway.
The bus was travelling from Harare to the school which is located in Shurugwi, Midlands Province.
The accident occurred at the 181km peg along the Harare-Bulawayo Highway after a pirate taxi driver suddenly encroached onto the bus driver’s lane.
All pupils escaped unhurt, but some lost property in the fire that erupted following the collision.

Inter Africa Bus Crashes Into A Truck, Four Schoolchildren Killed

Fifteen (15) people were injured when an Inter Africa bus they were travelling on was involved in an accident on Monday afternoon at the 68km-peg along the Nyanga-Rwenya Road.
13 of the injured were learners from Emmanuel High School and the other two were the bus driver and conductor.
The accident occurred near the spot where the fatal Regina Coeli bus disaster occurred in 1991.

He said the bus had 73 learners on board who were on their way to the school for the start of the second term.
The injured were ferried to Regina Coeli Mission Hospital. Said Insp Muzondo:

13 Learners Injured In Inter Africa Bus Accident

About seventy-five (75) Pakame High School learners narrowly escaped death on Sunday when their hired Inter Africa bus was involved in an accident along the Harare-Bulawayo Highway.
The bus was travelling from Harare to the school which is located in Shurugwi, Midlands Province.
ZRP spokesperson Assistant Commissioner Paul Nyathi confirmed the incident to <a href="https://www.newsday.co.zw/local-news/article/200011245/75-pupils-cheat-death-in-bus-inferno">NewsDay</a>, adding that all pupils escaped unhurt, but some lost property in the fire. He said;

The Pakame High School accident comes after a Tynwald High School bus was involved in a fatal accident in Juliusdale, Nyanga on Friday, 14 October 2022 around 7 PM.
Reports suggested that the driver was speeding and failed to negotiate a sharp curve. The accident claimed the lives of six learners and one teacher.
Most road traffic accidents in Zimbabwe are attributed to human error. Drivers often make mistakes such as speeding, driving under the influence of alcohol, fatigue, or distractions like mobile phones.

Bus Catches Fire With 75 Pakame High School Learners On Board

A gang of five armed robbers pounced on the Inter Africa depot in Masvingo in the industrial area on Wednesday and got away with US$14 524 and ZAR13 450.
ZPR spokesperson in Masvingo Province, Inspector Kudakwashe Dhewa, told <a href="https://masvingomirror.com/armed-robbers-hit-masvingo-inter-africa-depot/">The Mirror</a> that the robbery happened on Wednesday around 1 AM.
He said the five robbers were armed with a pistol and iron bars.
The suspects first entered Quality Gas Garage where they tied Taurai Mlambo who was sleeping in his vehicle and Knowledge Mutsananguri who was guarding the premises.
They then demanded the names of the Inter Africa depot security guards from the two before they tied them using shoelaces and bundled them into Mutsananguri’s vehicle.
The suspects drove Mutsananguri’s vehicle to the Inter Africa gate and called the security guards by their names.
However, the security guards did not respond and the robbers force-opened the gate using iron bars and two of them drove into the garage.
The other three robbers then jumped over the precast wall and manhandled Kudakwashe Katiza (36) who was sleeping inside a bus.
They robbed him of his phone before tying two other guards’ feet and hands with shoelaces.
The gang then proceeded to an office and opened a safe using an iron bar and took all the money it contained.
They then drove away in an unidentified vehicle.
The security guards managed to free themselves and reported the matter to the police.
Depot manager, Cephas Machaka (36) attended the scene together with police officers.
Machaka confirmed that indeed, US$14 524 and ZAR13 450 was in the safe.

Masvingo Inter Africa Depot Robbed

President Emmerson Mnangagwa has sent a condolence message to the Maketo family following the death of <a href="https://zero.pindula.co.zw/air-commodore-maketo-dies-in-inter-africa-bus-accident/">Air Commodore Pio Pasipamire Maketo who died in a road accident on Saturday last week</a>. In a statement seen by Pindula News, the president said Maketo was an exceptional trainer. Reads the statement:

The demise in a fatal traffic accident last Saturday of Air Commodore Pio Pasipamire Maketo has robbed our Airforce of Zimbabwe, AFZ, of an exceptional trainer and dedicated cadre of our Defence Force. Cut at the prime of his career, Air Commodore Maketo leaves behind a meritorious career which include several peace-making missions in our Region, and countless airmen and women he trained after qualifying as an flying instructor in the late 1980s. Amidst countless challenges placed in the way to frustrate our bid to Africanise the nascent Airforce of Zimbabwe soon after Independence, and the subsequent integration of hitherto warring armies into a new National Army, cadres like late Air Commodore Maketo had to be redeployed from the Zimbabwe National Army, ZNA, to the Air Force on Zimbabwe in order to transform that key arm of our Defence Force so it reflected the new, multiracial post-independence ethos of a free Zimbabwe.
Alongside his peers, he hastened the realisation of this key cog in the broader vision of our Defence Force. Before long, the late Air Commodore would be involved in the Mozambican Campaign meant to secure our routes to the sea, and to support the sister Republic of Mozambique, then under attack from apartheid-sponsored bandits. President Mnangagwa Mourns "Exceptional Trainer" Air Commodore Maketo

Air Commodore Pio Maketo died on the spot in a road accident when Inter Africa bus collided with a Toyota Hilux on Saturday 07 January 2023 at around 1730 hours at the 117 km peg along Harare-Bulawayo Road.
Maketo, who was announced as one of the two Air commodores when Mnangagwa promoted two Air Force of Zimbabwe Group Captains to the rank of Air commodore and six Wing commanders to Group Captains in December 2021, was reportedly in the Toyota Hilux vehicle.
According to a statement released by the Zimbabwe Republic Police (ZRP), two people died on the spot while 13 others were injured when the Yutong bus was involved in a head-on collision with a Toyota Hilux vehicle.
The Inter Africa bus which had 17 passengers on board was travelling towards Harare while the Toyota Hilux was travelling in the opposite direction.
The bodies of the victims were taken to Chegutu District Hospital mortuary for post-mortem whilst the injured are admitted at the same hospital.

Air Commodore Maketo Dies In Inter Africa Bus Accident

Two (2) people died while eighteen (18) others were injured when a Mukumba bus (Inter-Africa) was involved in an accident along the Mutare-Masvingo Road on Wednesday, the Zimbabwe Republic Police (ZRP) has said.

On 9 April this year, <a href="https://news.pindula.co.zw/2022/04/10/49-injured-as-another-inter-africa-bus-overturns/">forty-nine (49) people were injured when an Inter-Africa bus was involved in an accident</a> along the Harare-Bulawayo Road near National Sports Stadium.
Police said the driver of the bus lost control of the vehicle before it veered off the road and overturned.
The accident occurred barely five days after one person was killed while 22 others were injured when another Inter-Africa bus overturned at Karina in Norton.
The bus was travelling from Murombedzi to Harare with 58 passengers on board.
