The UK Minister for Africa James Duddridge has urged Zimbabwean authorities to reform and stop harassing political opponents.
Duddridge made reference to the High Court denying Joana Mamombe and Cecilia Chimbiri bail and said the government must ensure all are treated equally under the law.
Tweeted Duddridge:
<blockquote>Bail denied again for Joana Mamombe &amp; Cecilia Chimbiri in Zimbabwe. I call on Zimbabwe’s authorities to ensure all are treated equally under the law, and to show action on the government’s commitments to reform. Harassment of political opponents needs to end.</blockquote>
The Uk Minister For Africa Duddridge’s tweet came exactly 3 days after the E<a href="https://news.pindula.co.zw/2021/03/29/eu-concerned-by-the-continued-incarceration-of-mamombe-and-chimbiri/">U in Zimbabwe condemned</a> the High Court ruling and also said the selective application of the law must not persist in Zimbabwe:

Mamombe and Chimbiri were denied bail after High Court judge Justice Chitapi said there is evidence against them that warrants his decision not to grant them bail. The duo was arrested on 5 March for being part of a press conference that was deemed illegal by law enforcement agents.

Harrassment of Political Opponents Must End In Zimbabwe  - UK Minister For Africa On Mamombe Chimbiri Incarceration

A compromised judiciary and property rights concerns are reportedly the major deterrents and the reason why many investors from the UK are not interested in investing in Zimbabwe.
This was reportedly revealed by the UK minister for Africa James Duddridge yesterday (Wednesday) in an opinion piece that was published in South Africa yesterday.
Duddridge is quoted by ZimLive as saying:
<blockquote>UK investors repeatedly tell us that three things prevent them from investing in Zimbabwe: concerns about the poorly managed currency, concerns about the arbitrary property rights, and concerns about the legal system.
These areas can be improved through genuine political and economic reform and with greater investment, the economy can be rebuilt for all Zimbabweans.</blockquote>
Duddridge also spoke about the lack of reforms and the human rights issue in Zimbabwe and said:
<blockquote>In 2017, President Emmerson Mnangagwa committed to reforms to bring legislation and practice in line with Zimbabwe’s constitution. This is encouraging. But sanctions will be retained for as long as the human rights situation in Zimbabwe justifies them.
The UK is committed to supporting Zimbabwe’s long term success. But the onus is on the Zimbabwean government to show it is willing to take steps to make the critical political and economic reforms the country needs. Until then we will not shy away from defending human rights.</blockquote>
The UK recently imposed sanctions on <a href="https://news.pindula.co.zw/2021/02/01/uk-announces-sanctions-on-zimbabwean-security-chiefs/">4 Zimbabwean officials</a> who according to the UK were directly involved in human rights abuses.

Property Rights Issues, Compromised Judiciary Deterring UK Investors From Investing In Zimbabwe - Report

The UK Minister for Africa has released a statement on the just ended Ugandan elections. James Duddridge said the UK government welcomes the calm passing of the elections. He also said they were concerned about the internet blockade that was initiated by President Museveni’s government and urged the Uganda authorities to investigate issues circulating about Uganda’s political climate during the election season.
Said Duddridge in a statement:
<blockquote>The UK Government welcomes the relatively calm passing of the elections in Uganda and notes the re-election of H.E. Yoweri Museveni as President.
Many in Uganda and beyond have expressed concerns about the overall political climate in the run up to the elections as well as the electoral process. It is important these concerns are raised, investigated and resolved in a peaceful, legal and constitutional manner. We ask that all parties, including the security services, but also all of Uganda’s political movements, act with restraint to ensure the peaceful resolution of disputes.
We commend the role of the media, observers and civil society throughout the elections. The UK is concerned by the national internet shutdown, which clearly limited the transparency of the elections, and constrained the freedoms that Ugandans are entitled to.
The UK is a steadfast advocate for Ugandan democracy and we will continue to work to achieve inclusive democratic progress that delivers for future generations. As a longstanding partner, we urge Uganda to continue to strive to meet its own international human rights commitments, including respecting the right to freedom of opinion, freedom of expression and freedom of the media.
