A Zimbabwe Republic Police (ZRP) member on Wednesday told Harare magistrate Taurai Manuwere that police officers were employed to defend President Emmerson Mnangagwa.
The police officer, Violet Kadiki, who is based at Warren Park Police Station, said it is the duty of police officers to defend Mnangagwa from those who oppose the government.
Kadiki made the remarks during cross-examination by lawyer Alec Muchadehama representing five opposition activists accused of violating COVID-19 lockdown regulations.
The three activists, Harare West MP, Joannah Mamombe (MDC Alliance), Cecilia Chimbiri, Makomborero Haruziviishe, Stanley Manyenga and Lovejoy Chitengu were arrested for allegedly holding an unsanctioned demonstration in Warren Park at the height of coronavirus lockdowns in May 2020.
Kadiki told the court that they arrested the accused for carrying placards written: “ED must Go”.
Asked by Muchadehama if saying ED must go is bad, she responded by saying “yes”. Added Muchadehama:

So what do those placards written ED must go mean? … What if the protestors were saying ED meaning another politician, Egypt Dzinemunhenzva?
</blockquote>
Kadiki replied she only knew “ED” as the President. She said:
<blockquote>
They were asking the President to go and we are there to defend the President from those who oppose the government.
</blockquote>
Dzinemunhenzva, a perennial Presidential aspirant, was one of the candidates in the 2018 polls.
Kadiki said she could not identify the accused persons in the dock, saying they were wearing face masks at the time of their arrest.
The trial was postponed to Tuesday.

Harare West MP Joanna Mamombe has been named among the five winners of the third annual One Young World Politician of the Year Award alongside Erik Marquardt (33), Germany, Michael Tubbs (30), United States, Sarah Elago (30), The Philippines, and Zarifa Ghafari (28), Afghanistan.
The One Young World Politician of the Year Award recognises five of the world’s most outstanding politicians between the ages of 18 – 35, who are using their positions to have a positive impact on young people in their communities and countries. One Young World wrote on their website:
<blockquote>Joanah Mamombe is Zimbabwe’s youngest female Member of Parliament. A molecular biologist by profession and a youth leader in Movement for Democratic Change (MDC), the main opposition party in Zimbabwe. Mamombe is also a respected human rights activist.
Through her active role in Parliament, championing changes in law and speaking truth to power, she continues to highlight the plight of the young person.
Mamombe has been the subject of numerous state police investigations which are described by Amnesty International as “persecution through prosecution”.
Most recently, Mamombe was detained and charged with allegedly falsifying reports of being abducted and tortured in reprisal for demonstrations she led in May 2020. Mamombe denies these charges and is determined to continue her advocacy for reform.

The opposition MDC Alliance has reported that the party’s Harare Province Youth Assembly Organiser, Lovejoy Chitengu who is also known as Dunga was picked up from his home yesterday morning by police officers driving a Toyota Quantum with unmarked plates.
The party said he was taken to Harare Central Police Station where he was detained. Although the party did not disclose the reason behind the arrest, it is presumed that the arrest has to do with his participation in a flash hunger protest in Warren Park on the 13th of this month.
The development comes when the state has also notified that Stanley Manyenga, the MDC Alliance youth assembly chairman for Harare, had also been arrested for participating in the demo while other participants are still wanted by police.
Meanwhile, Joannah Mamombe (Harare West MP), Netsai Marova and Cecilia Chimbiri, all MDC Alliance officials, who were arrested on the day of protest have since appeared before Harare Magistrate accused of violating lockdown regulations which prohibited gathers of more than 50 people.
Magistrate Barbra Mateko remanded them pending bail hearing on Thursday. The trial happened in a local hospital where the three are currently receiving medical attention for injuries sustained from torture on the night of arrest by suspected state security agents.
