Harare mayor, Councillor Jacob Mafume, has been criticised for attending a ZANU PF indoctrination programme at the party’s Herbert Chitepo School of Ideology.
Mafume is among a group of mayors, chairpersons, councillors, and staff from 92 local authorities across the country who attended the two-day training session at the Rainbow Towers Hotel in Harare.
The training was conducted by Munyaradzi Machacha, the principal of the Herbert Chitepo School of Ideology and ZANU PF’s National Political Commissar, on behalf of the Ministry of Local Government and Public Works.
However, the mayors of Bulawayo, David Coltart, and his deputy, Edwin Ndlovu, did not attend the training. Instead, the city’s Town Clerk and Finance Director attended in their place.
Former CCC MP Job Sikhala, in a post on X (formerly Twitter), suggested that the opposition councillors attending the training may be motivated by greed. He wrote:

There are more important things in life than money and power. No amount of silver and gold should persuade you to sacrifice your values and principles to be dragged to the Herbert Chitepo School of Ideology, to be brainwashed with some redundant ideology.
The ideology that is anti-people, promotion of the persecution of those in disagreement with that moribund ideology and intolerance of opponents of the establishment!

Hopewell Chin’ono, a prominent government critic, was more blunt in his assessment of Mafume’s attendance at the ZANU PF ideological training.
Chin’ono accused Mafume of “treachery” saying he is now serving his own interests and those of the ruling ZANU PF party. Said Chin’ono:

Harareans rejected ZANU PF in toto, but here you are, Mayor, using taxpayers’ money to attend an ideological indoctrination workshop at a ZANU PF indoctrination school!
I wouldn’t blame anyone who argues that you are no longer serving the interests of the residents of Harare, you are now serving your own interests and those of ZANU PF!
I can’t imagine that you would leave your office for the whole day to go to a ZANU PF indoctrination school when your residents have no clean drinking water!
It is just irresponsible for any opposition-elected mayor to do such a reckless thing! You have insulted the residents of Harare.
They are powerless because everything in Zimbabwe is captured, but at this point, it is fair to say you don’t represent them anymore!
… History will never forgive you for this treachery Jacob, you have betrayed the residents of Harare.
Our country is broken both politically and economically because of ZANU PF, yet you see it fit to not only go to a ZANU PF indoctrination school but to also use our money as Harareans attending this rubbish!
If Harareans had a way to remove you they would, but of course, ZANUPF courts will protect you, I am disappointed in not only your irresponsible actions, but in you too!
You have undermined the democratic process by participating in a ZANUPF indoctrination workshop while serving as an opposition mayor, you have “legitimised” the ruling party’s authoritarian tactics.

Mafume is a member of the opposition Citizens’ Coalition for Change (CCC) and was re-elected as the mayor of Harare following the 2023 general elections.
His re-election came after Sengezo Tshabangu controversially recalled his two predecessors, Ian Makone and Lovejoy Chitengu.
Tshabangu, known for unilaterally recalling scores of CCC MPs and Councillors, defended the mandatory two-day ideological training, describing it as a positive initiative aimed at building the capacity of councillors and aligning local governance with national policies.
The Herbert Chitepo School of Ideology is named after Herbert Chitepo, a prominent nationalist and former chairperson of the Zimbabwe African National Union (ZANU).
The school focuses on topics such as patriotism, national security, and the history of Zimbabwe’s liberation struggle.

Critics say Mafume is serving his own interests, not the people. They think it's wrong for him to go to ZANU PF training. But some say the training is good for learning about important things. The training is about the history of Zimbabwe and being loyal to the country. Some people are mad at Mafume for going. They think he should focus on helping the people of Harare instead.

Mafume Slammed For Attending ZANU PF Ideological Training

The Job Sikhala-led National Democratic Working Group (NDWG) has urged Zimbabwean citizens to protest against what it calls the “betrayal” by the Southern African Development Community (SADC) during the regional bloc’s 44th Summit, set to be held in Harare on August 17, 2024.
In a statement issued on Thursday, August 1, 2024, NDWG Director of Communications Courage Shumba said Zimbabweans should register their protests “whichever way they conceive to be effective, provided such actions are peaceful and within the law.”
Shumba reiterated that demonstrations are a lawful and constitutionally protected right that the Zimbabwe Republic Police (ZRP) should respect and protect.
The NDWG accused SADC of ignoring its own report on Zimbabwe’s 2023 general elections, and described the upcoming Summit as “a convergence of hypocrites who indicate left and turn right, defending tyranny instead of a progressive, peaceful political transition underpinned by democratic elections.” Reads the statement:

The National Democratic Working Group, a social justice movement, bringing together political parties, Civic organisations, the Church, trade associations, war veterans, youths, student unions and individuals across the country hereby presents the following statement in light of the Sadc Summit to be held in Harare, Zimbabwe from the 17th to the 18th of August 2024.
1.⁠ ⁠The assumption of the Chairmanship of SADC by Emmerson Mnangagwa, although coincidental through it being rotational, being itself acquired through no act of merit is wrong and inappropriate whilst SADC is still addressing the legitimacy issue arising from the elections ( August 2023) which were condemned as neither fair, credible, nor free or neither conforming to SADC guidelines on elections by SADC’s own instrument for the observation of the same for its member states
2.⁠ ⁠The assumption of the Chairmanship is happening in a tense environment characterised by intimidation, harassment, death threats, wanton arrests of opposition politicians, and civic activists and increased closure of democratic space in the host member state.
3.⁠ ⁠The SADC summit is continuing against a background of threats by army commanders to force the electorate to vote against its will in future elections. SADC ought to be disturbed and moved to respond to such careless, reckless and disturbing utterances that are sure to ignite despondency and instability.
4.⁠ ⁠The SADC Summit is an unnecessary burden for a country that is completely on its knees in every shape and form. The country has been reduced to a basket case through officialised corruption where the entire state infrastructure is under attack from politically immune powerful criminals and their middlemen. This is a country with a fractured health system, a dilapidated road and rail network, a crushed education system and a third of its working-age doing menial jobs outside its borders.
5.⁠ ⁠The Summit which will leave the democracies of 16 nations in the hands of a failing Harare dictatorship is a grave miscalculation on the part of all its attendees and the rest of the people of Southern Africa who for the next 12 months will labour under the mediocrity of this uncreative and defensive Harare establishment.
6. SADC which ignored its own fact-finding mechanism to enhance peaceful political transition in Southern African countries through credible elections which conform to a single regional standard the summit is now, in the eyes of most Zimbabweans, a convergence of hypocrites who indicate left and turn right defending tyranny instead of progressive peaceful political transition underpinned by democratic elections.
7.⁠ ⁠NDWG encourages all persons who feel betrayed by the SADC organisation to register their protests to its member states at the opportune 44th SADC Meeting whichever way they conceive to be effective provided such actions are peaceful and within the law.
8.⁠ ⁠NDWG reiterates that demonstrations are lawful and freedom of expression is a constitutional right that must be used to defend our rights as enshrined in the Constitution and under international law.
9.⁠ ⁠NDWG calls on the police and security services to appropriately assist all persons who wish to demonstrate against this SADC gathering and to express themselves during the Summit. It will be in the interests of public order and public safety for the police to have an active role in facilitating the movement of the protestors during such demonstrations.
10.⁠ ⁠NDWG calls on the police to refrain from barbaric acts, use of force and wanton arresting of citizens exercising their democratic rights in a free, independent and sovereign country. A non-partisan, able, willing and efficient police will assist the protestors to deliver their messages peacefully to the SADC leaders without incident.

Job Sikhala's group, NDWG, is unhappy with SADC for ignoring issues in Zimbabwe. They want people to protest peacefully during the SADC Summit in August 2024. They say SADC leaders defend tyranny instead of promoting democracy. NDWG says demonstrations are protected by law, and the police must respect this right. They want the police to help protestors during the Summit and not use force. NDWG calls on everyone who feels betrayed by SADC to protest peacefully. They want the police to be fair and help protestors deliver their messages without trouble.

Job Sikhala-Led Group Calls For Protests Against SADC During Upcoming Summit

The High Court of Zimbabwe has overturned two separate convictions and sentences against prominent opposition politician Job Sikhala.
On July 22, 2024, the High Court issued rulings that overturned Sikhala’s previous convictions and sentences on charges of inciting violence and communicating falsehoods.
On January 24, 2024, Sikhala was found guilty of inciting violence by Harare Magistrate Tafadzwa Miti. This charge stemmed from the unrest that erupted during the funeral of slain Citizens Coalition for Change (CCC) activist Moreblessing Ali in June 2022.
In a separate case on February 15, 2024, Sikhala was fined US$500 by Harare Regional Magistrate Feresi Chakanyuka for communicating falsehoods.
Chakanyuka also handed Sikhala a nine-month suspended sentence, contingent on him not committing a similar offence within the next five years.
This charge was related to Sikhala’s 2021 tweet alleging that a junior police officer had killed a baby with a baton in Harare.
Amnesty International had previously condemned Sikhala’s conviction for “publishing or communicating false statements prejudicial to the state,” describing it as a “travesty of justice.”
Khanyo Farisè, Amnesty International’s Deputy Regional Director for East and Southern Africa, noted that Sikhala had been convicted under a law that did not exist.
In separate rulings, the High Court has now overturned both of these convictions and sentences after Sikhala launched appeals against the lower court decisions.
Responding to the High Court’s rulings, Sikhala described the ZANU PF-led government as a “criminal regime.” He wrote on X:

For 595 days, I was thrown in solitary confinement shackled in chains like a terrorist and suffered the most horrible abuse any person can be put under by the criminal regime in Harare for allegedly inciting public violence to revenge the gruesome murder of Moreblessing Ali.
I told all who cared to listen to me that I did not commit any crime in my professional calling to represent the Moreblessing Ali family. I told all of you that it was the evilness that resided in the hearts of those who ran our country, and it was political persecution to remove me from the 2023 general elections.
Today, the High Court sat in Harare to hear my two appeals, one fake conviction of publishing falsehoods and another one of inciting public violence to revenge the death of Moreblessing Ali.
The High Court acquitted me in the two cases. There was concurrence by the state that the first case was a wrong conviction based on the law that does not exist at all.
In the second case of Moreblessing Ali, the state agreed that there was no evidence at all in the record, showing that I incited anyone.
To those who have been used to persecuting me, my family, and everyone associated with me, remember there is God in heaven.
Your day of judgment shall also come. The nonsense peddled that it then defeats our view that the judiciary is captured when it comes to political prisoners is as scandalous as its peddlers.
Where there is no evidence that even a kraalhead would convict leaves judiciary officers of dignity with no option but to uphold their dignity by throwing away fake convictions.

Award-winning journalist Hopewell Chin’ono had harsh words for the two female magistrates involved in the lower court rulings.
Chin’ono described Tafadzwa Miti and Feresi Chakanyuka as “shameless” in their handling of the cases against Sikhala. Said Chin’ono:

Feresi Chakanyuka, and on the right is Tafadzwa Mhiti, the two shameless magistrates who convicted Job Sikhala for crimes he didn’t commit.
Feresi Chakanyuka is so shameless that she used a law that doesn’t exist to convict and jail Sikhala. She even disregarded a High Court ruling that clearly stated such a law doesn’t exist!
Make them famous by RETWEETING them; it is time the whole world knows these accessories to repression and abuse of power!
There must be an online website that documents all these corrupt and captured magistrates, the opposition must learn to fight back using today’s tools like the internet and AI to expose these unprofessional and captured ZANUPF magistrates!
It is unbelievable that Feresi Chakanyuka could blatantly disregard the ruling of a higher court ruling and apply a non-existent law to convict someone! 
Tafadzwa Miti, too, has proven that she is no better than Chakanyuka with her equally shameful role in this sham trial.
These names need to be known and remembered for posterity!

The High Court in Zimbabwe said Job Sikhala wasn't guilty of inciting violence and telling lies. He was put in jail for 595 days for this. The court said he didn't do these things. Amnesty International said it was wrong to convict him. Sikhala said the government is bad. He was happy the court agreed he didn't do wrong things. People online said the magistrates were bad for convicting him. They want the world to know about these magistrates. Sikhala is now free.

High Court Overturns Convictions Against Job Sikhala For Which He Spent 595 Days In Prison

Former Zengeza West Member of Parliament Job Sikhala has returned to Zimbabwe after spending over four months outside the country, where he was seeking medical attention, reported <a href="https://www.newsday.co.zw/local-news/article/200029948/sikhala-returns">NewsDay</a>.
Sikhala left Zimbabwe shortly after his release from jail in January 2024, following a prolonged pre-trial detention of 595 days. He was initially arrested and charged with inciting public violence over the murder of opposition activist Moreblessing Ali, killed in May 2022. Additional charges were subsequently added during his incarceration.
Upon his return, Sikhala was welcomed by his family members, friends, and lawyer Arnold Tsunga at the Robert Mugabe International Airport.
While abroad, Sikhala addressed the United Nations Geneva Summit on Human Rights and Democracy on May 15th, where he spoke out against Zimbabwe’s deteriorating human rights record.
Darlington Chingwena, the information secretary of the National Democratic Working Group, has stated that they do not expect Sikhala to be re-arrested over his comments at the UN Geneva Summit on Human Rights and Democracy.
Amalgamated Teachers’ Rural Union of Zimbabwe (ARTUZ) president Obert Masaraure, who has been working with Sikhala, said:

I understand he has received numerous threatening calls, but we are aware that he is safe at the moment and we will continue to pray that he remains safe because we are aware that this regime can do anything.

Meanwhile, the High Court of Zimbabwe has quashed two recent convictions against Sikhala of two separate charges he was facing.
On Monday, July 22, the High Court acquitted Sikhala of the charge of inciting public violence, for which he had previously been ordered by a Harare Magistrate, Tafadzwa Miti, to serve a non-custodial sentence of 2 years, with the sentence wholly suspended on the condition of good behaviour.
In a separate ruling on the same day, Justices Pisirayi Kwenda and Benjamin Chikowero acquitted Sikhala of his conviction and sentence on charges of communicating falsehoods on social media, which had been handed down by Harare magistrate Feresi Chakanyuka.

Job Sikhala Returns To Zimbabwe

Former Zengeza West MP Job Sikhala has refuted rumours of being in exile, affirming that he plans to return to Zimbabwe once cleared by his medical team.
Following his release from Chikurubi Maximum Security Prison after a 595-day incarceration on charges of inciting public violence—allegedly politically motivated according to pro-democracy activists—Sikhala departed the country.
Sikhala delivered a speech at the United Nations Human Rights and Democracy Summit in Geneva last month.
His remarks, highlighting the dire state of human rights in Zimbabwe, drew ire from authorities at home.
However, speaking to <a href="https://www.newsday.co.zw/local-news/article/200029044/i-am-not-in-exile-sikhala">NewsDay</a> on Sunday, Sikhala, who has been arrested more than 60 times for his political activism, said he was not bothered by the State’s threats. He said:
<blockquote>
The threats of my arrest are not something new that I can be afraid of.
It has been the habit of the regime to persecute me every time things become untenable for them to run the country to the satisfaction of the citizenry.
I wonder whether my arrest will assist them in delivering miracles to solve the challenges our country is gripped with. Desperation leads to desperate actions.
</blockquote>
He said his speech in Geneva before an international audience did not contravene national laws. Said Sikhala:
<blockquote>
I was invited and accredited by the United Nations Human Rights Council, one of the six organs of the United Nations.
The content of my speech was unadulterated and the truthful expression of the experience I went through for a period of two years I was kept incommunicado by the regime.
What I went through and the obtaining human rights situation in Zimbabwe and the examples of concrete human rights abuses that were committed are unassailable.

Sikhala affirmed that despite threats of arrest, he intends to return home as soon as his doctors declare him fit to do so. He said:

When my medical issues are completed and my medical team has released me, I will jet back to the country the following day.
On whether my security will be guaranteed or whether it is safe to come back to my country, I don’t have two homes. I don’t have any other country. Zimbabwe is my home and country.
I will prosper or fail in my country. I am rooted in Zimbabwe. I will live and die in Zimbabwe. Whatever happens can happen and I will never be a fugitive from my own country.

On Saturday, five members of the National Democratic Working Group (NDWG), a political group led by Sikhala, were arrested in Kuwadzana, Harare.
The NDWG said its arrested members were distributing monthly food handouts to less privileged Kuwadzana residents.

Sikhala Denies Exile Rumours, Plans Return to Zimbabwe Upon Medical Clearance

Five members of the National Democratic Working Group (NDWG), a political group led by former Zengeza West MP, Job Sikhala, were arrested in Kuwadzana, Harare, on Saturday, June 29.
In a statement, the NDWG accused the police of “overzealousness”, adding the government was increasingly becoming “paranoid” following revelations of alleged corruption involving very senior civil servants and elite politicians.
The NDWG said its arrested members were distributing monthly food handouts to less privileged Kuwadzana residents.
The arrested activists who are currently in police custody are Edmore Svinurai, Emily Mwali, Isaya Ndawana, Patience Ndoro and Regina Aniwute. 
NDWG Director of Information and Communications, Courage Shumba, said:

Every province gathers monthly subscriptions for carrying out its social responsibility task to assist the vulnerable in our society with basic needs like food, clothing, sanitary wares, exercise books and partial payment of school fees to selected vulnerable children in a country that has no social safety nets .
Today, the police pounced on the provincial social awareness and safety net meeting and arrested the NDWG leadership gathered to help the elderly and the orphans.
They were arrested at the private residence of Regina Aniwute. The police are pressing charges of gathering without police clearance.
The meeting was never a political gathering but a social justice interaction of persons who have been doing good for poor and the vulnerable at a private residence of one of its members.

NDWG comprises churches, students, businesses and other interest groups.
The arrest of the five NDWG follows the arrest of seventy-nine people linked to CCC over two weeks ago for attending an event in which they were commemorating International Day of the African Child at party leader Jameson Timba’s Harare residence.
The CCC activists are languishing in remand prison on charges of participating in a gathering with the intent to promote violence, breaches of peace or bigotry as well as disorderly conduct.
Last week, President Emmerson Mnangagwa and the Minister of Information, Publicity and Broadcasting Services, Jenfan Muswere, threatened to deal ruthlessly with political activists and non-governmental organisations said to be planning to stage protests.
Muswere warned that law enforcement agents will be deployed to ensure that instigators of violence are swiftly apprehended and that peace and tranquillity prevail throughout the country.
The warnings follow the imprisonment of businessmen Moses Mpofu and Mike Chimombe, associated with ZANU PF, on charges of defrauding the government of US$7.3 million intended for a poverty-alleviation program under the Presidential Goat Pass-on scheme.
They were entrusted with procuring over 600,000 goats for rural households but allegedly misappropriated the funds by purchasing only 4,200 low-grade goats and inflating the invoices.
Additionally, Mpofu and Chimombe have been implicated in a US$40 million Zimbabwe Electoral Commission (ZEC) tender, which has also implicated Wicknell Chivayo, a former convict with close ties to Mnangagwa.
The Zimbabwe Anti-Corruption Commission (ZACC) has arrested Mpofu and Chimombe in relation to this case.
ZACC has stated that it is keen to interview Chivayo as well, but has not yet called him in for questioning.
Mpofu and Chimombe were arrested after they wrote to a South African company that allegedly supplied election materials for the 2023 general elections, complaining that Chivayo had sidelined them from the deal.
It appears that their attempts to challenge Chivayo over the “irregular” ZEC tender and demand a share of the profits have backfired on them.

Zimbabwe Police Arrest 5 Political Activists Distributing Food To Poor People

Former Zengeza West Member of Parliament, Job Sikhala, on Monday morning, said that police officers from the Criminal Investigations Department (CID) Law and Order division visited his home in Chitungwiza on Sunday night.
Sikhala, who is currently out of the country seeking medical treatment, stated he had instructed his lawyer Harrison Nkomo to inquire with the CID Law and Order unit and determine the purpose of their visit.
The opposition politician expressed his willingness to cut short his medical treatment and return to Zimbabwe to address and resolve this matter. Sikhala posted on X:

I woke up to loads of messages in my inbox from my neighbours and friends that officers from CID Law and Order visited my house in Chitungwiza last night looking for me.
Today, I have advised my lawyer Harrison Nkomo to go and inquire from CID Law and Order if they are truly looking for me so that, I can cut short my medical treatment to go back to Zimbabwe and clear my name over my address at the Geneva Summit for Human and Democracy which I gather, is the issue they want to press charges against me.

While speaking at the Geneva Summit on Human Rights and Democracy in May as one of this year’s invited speakers, Sikhala expressed concern that discussing Zimbabwe’s human rights situation could potentially result in his imprisonment under the “Patriotic Act”.
He also asserted that his arrest in 2022 was politically motivated, intended to remove him from the political landscape as President Emmerson Mnangagwa’s ZANU PF party allegedly prepared to manipulate the August 2023 harmonized elections.
Sikhala spent 595 days in pre-trial detention following his arrest on charges of inciting public violence. He posted on X:

What also surprises me is that my absence from Zimbabwe for medicals is known by everyone and wonder why the state agents would go to look for me at my house when they know that I am not in Zimbabwe at the present moment.

Sikhala Says Police Visited His Home While He Is Abroad For Medical Treatment

Information, Publicity and Broadcasting Services Minister, Jenfan Muswere, has labeled opposition politician Job Sikhala a “common criminal” and dismissed his claims of political persecution.
Sikhala, a prominent lawyer and former opposition member of Parliament, was arrested on 14 June 2022 for inciting public violence and spent the next 595 days in pre-trial detention.
His prolonged detention without bail was seen by critics as political persecution for speaking against ZANU PF excesses.
However, speaking during a recent post-Cabinet media briefing in Harare, Muswere said Sikhala was arrested for breaking the law and not political persecution. He said (via Nehanda Radio):

He is not a political prisoner, and his claims of political persecution are in sharp contrast to his indisputable violation of the Criminal Codification and Reform Act.

Sikhala alleged political persecution during a recent Human Rights and Democracy summit in Geneva, Switzerland.
He said his arrest was a result of his political activism and opposition to the government.
However, Muswere said Sikhala’s conviction and acquittal in some of the cases proves that Zimbabwe’s courts of law and independent and fair.
Sikhala delivered a speech at the Geneva Summit, detailing his traumatic experiences in prison.
The former Zengeza West MP claimed he was kept in solitary confinement and was denied food and visits from relatives as well as access to medical care. He said:

It is disheartening to disclose sad moments of traumatic experiences one has walked through in life as it gives persecutors the satisfaction of their evil deeds.
I’m just one among thousands of Zimbabweans who have become victims of persecution in my country. My arrest was nothing more than political persecution.
In my political career spanning more than three decades, I have been arrested 68 times by the authorities in Zimbabwe. In nearly all those cases, I was always found innocent.
But on the 14th of June 2022, when I was 49 years old, with a wife and 11 children at home, yes, 11 children, I was arrested and thrown into prison. This time around, they refused to release me on bail.
It was the only way Zimbabwe’s corrupt regime would distil the 2023 general elections, which they stopped me from contesting.

Sikhala also expressed his fears that he could be imprisoned for discussing Zimbabwe’s human rights situation under the “Patriotic Act”.

Sikhala Not A Political Prisoner But A Common Criminal - Muswere

Former Member of Parliament for Zengeza, Job Sikhala, on Wednesday told the annual Geneva Summit, that discussing Zimbabwe’s human rights situation could result in his imprisonment under the “Patriotic Act”.
The Patriotic Act, officially known as the Criminal Law (Codification and Reform) Amendment Act, 2023, criminalises “wilfully injuring the sovereignty and national interest of Zimbabwe”.
Sikhala was addressing the Geneva Summit on Human Rights and Democracy where he was invited as one of this year’s speakers.
The former CCC MP spent 595 days in pretrial detention following his arrest for inciting public violence.
He told the Summit that his arrest was politically motivated and was aimed at getting him out of the way as President Emmerson Mnangagwa’s ZANU PF allegedly prepared to manipulate the August 2023 harmonised elections. Innocent until proven guilty does not apply to anyone who dares to stand up to Mnangagwa’s corrupt regime.

Sikhala said millions of Zimbabweans have fled the country in fear of persecution. He said:

In July 2023 the regime passed the Patriotic Act, a new repressive legislation targeting free speech and association.
Under that law, I am deemed to be committing a crime just by talking to you.
It is no wonder why millions of Zimbabweans have fled abroad in fear of persecution.

Penalties for those found guilty of violating the Patriotic Act include a fine not exceeding level twelve or imprisonment for a period not exceeding 10 years, or both.
Punishment also includes the loss of citizenship, denial of the right to vote and the death penalty.

Sikhala Addresses Geneva Summit For Human Rights And Democracy

Opposition politician Job Sikhala is currently undergoing medical check-ups at a foreign hospital, as reported by the National Democratic Working Group (NDWG).
While incarcerated at Chikurubi Maximum Security Prison, the former Zengeza West MP experienced persistent stomach issues, including bloody stool, which were suspected to be caused by poisoning. Additionally, he suffered from abdominal pain on his left side.
Darlington Chingwena, the head of information and communication at NDWG, told <a href="https://www.newsday.co.zw/local-news/article/200024871/sikhala-still-undergoing-treatment">NewsDay</a> that Sikhala has been unwell. He said:

Sikhala went for medical check-ups, clearly aware that he was in the hands of the oppressors who are well known for poisoning people, killing people and all sorts of sinister acts against those who fight the daily battles people are facing in our nation.
So, he is still receiving treatment overseas. He has not been well; he will be back soon after the medical check-ups. As a movement, we hope that all goes well, and we wish him well.
So, it was very indispensable for him to go overseas for the verification of his health.

Chingwena said they are hopeful that the medical check-ups will be completed soon so that Sikhala returns to Zimbabwe to address a myriad of challenges confronting the nation. He said:

Nevertheless, we are hopeful that the medical check-ups will be completed soon because Zimbabweans are in dire need of Job Sikhala.
As a nation we are at a bus stop waiting for the bus, unfortunately, the bus is nowhere to be found.
People are jogging in glue, there is a high rate of inflation, people are being evicted from their land, there is a poor transport system, students are dropping out of school because of financial instabilities, and everything is upside down. So, we need Sikhala back so that we can work together towards the alleviation of our daily crisis.
</blockquote>
Sikhala spent 595 days in pre-trial detention from June 2022 to January 2024 at Chikurubi Maximum Security Prison.

Sikhala Undergoing Treatment Abroad

Former Zengeza West MP Job Sikhala was on Tuesday, 05 March acquitted on the last charge that he was facing out of a litany of charges, after a lengthy trial.
Harare Magistrate Vongai Guwuriro ruled that Sikhala did not commit the crime of inciting people to commit public violence which he was facing.
Sikhala was arrested for allegedly inciting people to commit public violence by participating in the July 2020 anti-government protest.
In a statement, the Zimbabwe Lawyers for Human Rights (ZLHR) confirmed Sikhala’s acquittal today. It said:

We just got former Zengeza West MP Hon. Job Sikhala acquitted on the last charge that he was facing out of a litany of charges, with Harare Magistrate Vongai Guwuriro exonerating him today after a lengthy trial.
Hon. Sikhala had been on trial for allegedly inciting people to commit public violence through participating in the July 2020 anti-govt protest, which was aimed at registering concern over mismanagement by President Mnangagwa’s administration.
He had been charged with incitement to commit public violence as defined in section 187(1)(a) as read with section 36(1)(a) of the Criminal Code.
He also faced an alternative charge of incitement to commit public violence as defined in section 187(1)(b) of Criminal Code as read with section 36(1)(b) of Criminal Code or alternatively incitement to participate in a gathering with intent to promote public violence, breaches of peace or bigotry as defined in section 187(1)(a) of Criminal Code as read with section 37(1)(a) of Criminal Code.
During trial, prosecutors alleged that the former Zengeza West MP incited people between May 2020 and 20 July 2020 to participate in public demonstrations that would cause public violence and breach of peace among people in Zimbabwe on 31 July 2020 by posting video clips with inciting messages.

Sikhala Acquitted Of Incitement Charge Emanating From 2020 Protests

Former Zengeza West MP Job Sikhala has launched a new movement, the National Democratic Working Group (NDWG).
In a communiqué, NDWG head of information and communication Darlington Chingwena said the movement is a convergence of democratic forces seeking to “free masses from political chains”. Said Chingwena:

The NDWG is a mass of our people-driven movement of the democratic forces in Zimbabwe who are determined to build a solid base for our people to discuss their aspirations and find the best way forward,” he said.
The NDWG has started the mobilisation of the masses of our people for the ultimate convening of the National Democratic People’s Convention where people’s ideas and feedback will lead to the formation of a mass-based democratic people’s movement fighting for the takeover of government power.
</blockquote>
Chingwena said the NDWG has since held its inaugural meeting with the delegates drawn from the 10 provinces of Zimbabwe and various organisations. He said:

The lives of our people are in danger due to unending cycles of poverty, oppression, looting and plundering of the national resources and subversion of the will of our people through electoral theft and self-imposition by an unpopular tyranny.
At the inaugural meeting of the NDWG, the delegates from the 10 provinces of Zimbabwe and various organisations unanimously resolved the following as part of the process of gathering people’s views about the Zimbabwe that they want.
That within a month, provincial democratic working groups will be constituted by the masses of our people drawn from the churches, business, war veterans, women, youths and students, civil society, and people living with disabilities among others whose key function will be to visit every ward and district to collate the views of the masses of our people through group meetings.
The NDWG recognises the unresolved business of the war of liberation and takes it forward through a mass democratic struggle…
Inclusivity will define the work of all the organs of the National Democratic People’s Convention, which will gather at a date to be advised to deliberate on the way forward based on the submissions from the expected 5 000 delegates.

Sikhala left the Citizens Coalition for Change (CCC) party in February this year after being released from Chikurubi Maximum Security Prison where he spent almost 600 days in pre-trial detention for inciting violence in June 2022.

Job Sikhala Launches New Political Movement

The late Citizens Coalition for Change (CCC) activist Moreblessing Ali will be buried on Saturday, 02 March, almost two years after her gruesome murder in Nyatsime, Chitungwiza.
Ali’s burial was delayed following the arrest and prolonged pre-trial detention of family lawyer Job Sikhala whom the family insisted should be present.
Sikhala, who was released last month after spending 595 days at Chikurubi Maximum Security Prison for allegedly inciting the public to avenge Ali’s murder, said the late activist will be buried at Zororo Cemetery in Chitungwiza on Saturday. Sikhala posted on X:

I announce the burial of our heroine Moreblessing Ali on Saturday the 2nd of March 2024 at Zororo Cemetery at 12:30 PM.
All friends, relatives and colleagues are invited to this memorable event. We are bringing closure to this sad chapter in our country.

Ali’s remains had been in a mortuary since her dismembered body was discovered in June 2022 in a disused well at the home of Laina Mukandi, the mother to Pius Mukandi, alias Jamba, who was convicted of her murder.
Pius is now serving a 30-year jail term after he was found guilty of Ali’s murder by High Court Judge Justice Esther Muremba in December 2023.

Moreblessing Ali To Be Buried On 02 March In Chitungwiza – Sikhala

Job Sikhala claims he was kept in pre-trial detention at Chikurubi Maximum Security Prison for nearly 600 days because of false claims he had been co-opted into an alleged plot by Vice President Constantino Chiwenga to overthrow President Emmerson Mnangagwa.
In an interview with media businessman Trevor Ncube, Sikhala claimed he was being punished for alleged links to an imaginary coup plot. He said:

The most dangerous rumour which hardened my oppressors, which was spread and false, I want this to be known by everyone.
[It] was that Job Sikhala in whatever he has been doing or whatever he was doing has been used and was working in collusion with General Chiwenga to overthrow Emmerson Mnangagwa’s presidency in this country.
A pure lie created, I don’t know for what purpose. So when this rumour was also conveyed to my oppressors, my oppressors became hardened through a lie.
I have never met General Chiwenga. I don’t know where this rumour emanated from and for it to be said I still wonder up to present what the intention was.
The only time I met him was in July 1997 some 20-plus years ago when we as student leaders visited the state house after an invitation to a meeting by the late President Robert Mugabe.

The 51-year-old former Zengeza West MP spent 595 days at the country’s largest prison over violence incitement charges.
He was later convicted and handed a wholly suspended jail sentence over the offence which he has vowed to appeal at the High Court.

Sikhala Claims Long Pre-trial Detention Linked To False Plot To Overthrow Mnangagwa

Former Zengeza West Member of Parliament Job Sikhala (CCC) has claimed that ZANU PF abused State institutions to keep him in prison during the 2023 general election to block him from participating in the polls.
In an interview with Alpha Media Holdings chairman Trevor Ncube on the platform In Conversation with Trevor, Sikhala said ZANU PF was afraid he would cause “pandemonium” in the event of a rigged electoral outcome. He said:

I had the opportunity to meet some of the people from my oppressors’ camp in prison and generally, I was so inquisitive to know the reasons why this thing was being done to me.
They did not want me to be available during the 2023 general elections for the purpose that they were afraid that I would cause chaos and pandemonium in the event of a rigged electoral outcome.
This is one thing that they said that (Job) Sikhala must not be allowed to be present during the election period.
They never wanted me to be a strong backup for Nelson Chamisa’s presidential candidature against his opponent during the elections; they said that it (would have strengthened) Chamisa to the extent that this (could have caused) trouble in this country.
They wanted to cultivate animosity and hostility because, during the process of the incarceration, they were spreading counterintelligence rumours to the peers of (Nelson) Chamisa and my other peers who were outside to create (a) wedge and hostility between the two of us.
Sikhala was in pre-trial detention at Chikurubi Maximum Security Prison from June 2022 to January 2024 for inciting public violence following the murder of opposition activist Moreblessing Ali.

Soon after he was released from jail, Sikhala announced his resignation from the CCC party and declared his intention to form a new political movement.

ZANU PF Kept Me In Prison For Fear Of Losing 2023 Elections - Sikhala

Former Zengeza West MP, Job Sikhala, and Councillor Lovemore Maiko have been found not guilty and acquitted of charges of disorderly conduct by Harare Magistrate Yeukai Dzuda. The two were accused of leading a group of supporters to disrupt a ZANU PF rally and pelting stones at ruling party supporters before the March 2022 by-elections. However, Magistrate Dzuda ruled that the evidence presented by state witnesses during the trial was inconsistent and filled with contradictions.
Advocate Jeremiah Bamu, the legal representative for Sikhala and Maiko, expressed satisfaction with the ruling, stating that the state’s case had numerous inconsistencies and witness testimonies contradicted each other on important aspects.
Only yesterday, <a href="https://www.pindula.co.zw/2024/02/15/job-sikhala-fined-us500-for-publishing-falsehoods/">Sikhala was fined $500</a> by another magistrate after being convicted of communicating falsehoods. He had also received a nine-month suspended sentence, provided he does not commit a similar offence within the next five years. This conviction stemmed from a tweet in which Sikhala claimed that a police officer had fatally struck a baby with a baton in Harare.

Former MP Job Sikhala And Councillor Lovemore Maiko Acquitted Of Disorderly Conduct Charges

Former Zengeza West MP, Job Sikhala, is set to appear at the Harare Magistrates’ Court on Friday, 16 February in a case in which he is accused of disorderly conduct in a public place.
Sikhala was in court earlier on Thursday, 15 February, where he was fined US$500 by Harare regional magistrate Feresi Chakanyuka for communicating falsehoods.
In a statement, the National Prosecuting Authority (NPA) confirmed that Sikhala will appear in court tomorrow on a charge of contravening Section 41(a) of the Criminal Law Codification and Reform Act Chapter 9:23. It said:

Job Sikhala was this morning sentenced to a fine of USD500 by a Harare Magistrate on charges of publishing or communicating false statements prejudicial to the State.
He was sentenced to a further 9 months imprisonment, wholly suspended for 5 years on condition that he does not commit any offence involving publishing or communicating false statements prejudicial to the State.
The charges are emanating from a statement that the accused person made on social media sometime in 2021 alleging that the Police were responsible for the death of an infant.
The accused person will appear again in court tomorrow for judgment in another case in which he is accused of contravening Section 41(a) of the Criminal Law Codification and Reform Act Chapter 9:23, which is disorderly conduct in a public place.

In May 2023, Sikhala and former Chitungwiza Mayor Lovemore Maiko appeared before Harare magistrate Yeukai Dzuda on allegations of disorderly conduct.
Police officer Keffus Kumurai and Zanu PF supporter Pardon Chitembwe were brought in as witnesses and testified that Sikhala and opposition supporters initiated violence against Zanu PF supporters.
The witnesses claimed that a fight broke out between the two political parties and police had to intervene.
Keffus Kumurai told the court that he was patrolling in Zengeza while a Zanu PF gathering was being held at the Zengeza 5 grounds. He said suddenly a white lorry appeared with 40 people, including Sikhala.
Officer Kumurai testified that a fight broke out between the two political parties and police had to park their vehicles between the two political party camps.
However, a statement produced in court by the same policeman claimed that supporters of both parties threw stones at each other. The police officer suggested that this may have been the result of a typing error.
Pardon Chitembwe claimed that the opposition supporters were carrying stones in the truck and that Lovemore Maiko was giving more stones to the youths to throw at them.
Chitembwe also accused Job Sikhala of throwing a stone that hit one of their members, Shepard Tawodzera. Chitembwe stated that he is the secretary for security in the ruling party.

Sikhala Back In Court On 16 February On Disorderly Conduct Charge

A Harare magistrate will deliver the ruling on former Member of Parliament Job Sikhala’s case of publishing falsehoods on social media on 15 February, reported <a href="https://www.newsday.co.zw/local-news/article/200023045/court-defers-ruling-on-sikhala">NewsDay</a>.
Sikhala and his lawyer Harrison Nkomo appeared at the Harare Magistrates Court for a pre-sentencing hearing on Monday, 12 February.
Sikhala was convicted by Harare Magistrate Feresi Chakanyuka for allegedly communicating falsehoods last week on Wednesday.
He is accused of posting a Facebook message alleging that a junior police officer struck and killed a baby with a baton in central Harare in 2021.
Sikhala is denying the charge, and his lawyer Nkomo argued that his client was being charged under a non-existent law.
The former Zengeza West MP was recently slapped with a two-year suspended jail sentence for inciting public violence.
Prior to the sentencing, Sikhala had spent 595 days in pre-trial detention after he was denied bail several times.

Magistrates Court Defers Ruling On Sikhala

Former Zengeza West MP, <a href="https://pindula.co.zw/Job_Sikhala">Job Sikhala</a>, who launched the now-defunct MDC-99 party after leaving the main MDC nearly two decades ago, has launched yet another political movement.
Addressing the media in Harare on Thursday, Sikhala said his new political movement will be broad-based with civic society, students and the church being involved. He said:

We are not here to pronounce the emergence of a political organization but a broad-based mass democratic movement for everyone in the advancement of the mass democratic struggle in the fashion of the United Democratic Front (UDF) of the 1980s in apartheid South Africa.
This is motivated by the remembrance of the great ideals held by many Zimbabweans who perished during the period of the liberation struggle, Gukurahundi and those who died since the resuscitation of the goals and aspirations of the mass democratic struggle in February 1999.
</blockquote>
Sikhala also announced an end to his association with the Citizens Coalition for Change (CCC) which he described as a “carcass”.
He becomes the latest high-profile figure to leave CCC after Nelson Chamisa, the founding party resigned late last month.
Sikhala said the new movement will seek to correct the shortcomings of the MDC which was launched in 1999. He said:

The weakness of our 1999 approach was that the meeting of the constituent bodies was heavy at the top with only the ZCTU having grassroots structures.
It was the meeting of constituent bodies at the national leadership level with less participation from the shop floor and village level which eventually led to the clash of egos. Zimbabwe needs a way forward to answer the national question, of where to from here.
The way forward on what should be done from here will come from the people through a Mass Nationwide Democratic Consultative Process. The national consultative process will convene Nationwide Democratic Consultative Conventions.
The Consultative process will involve all important constituent bodies, that is, the general masses of our people, labour, students, traditional leaders, churches, civic society, businesspersons, professionals, residents’ associations, informal traders, women clubs, farmers, peasants, youth organizations, progressive political organizations, war veterans, war collaborators, artists, corporate business sector, and people living with disabilities.
</blockquote>
Critics have warned Sikhala that his decision to launch a new political initiative will mark the end of his political career and he “has no national political appeal” and should rather focus on his family and his law firm.

Sikhala Launches New Political Movement

The family of the murdered Citizens’ Coalition for Change activist, Moreblessing Ali, has yet to set a date for her burial almost two years after her death.
The family had insisted since its lawyer and representative Job Sikhala’s arrest on 14 June 2022, that Moreblessing will only be buried in his presence.
Tafadzwa Montgomery, sister of the deceased, told <a href="https://thenewshawks.com/alis-burial-imminent-two-years-after-murder/">The NewsHawks</a> that the family will deliberate on the way forward and make a media announcement. She said:

Thank you for reaching out. It is yet to be determined when it will be as there is a lot involved! Once an executive decision is made by our family, we will proceed. Thank you for your kindness in respecting our privacy as we soldier through this.
Just because VaSikhala (Mr Sikhala) has been released does not mean that every social media platform should come hounding us for evidence.
We are asking that as a family you give us due respect, especially for the Sikhala family to do what we need to do to give Moreblessing a decent burial.

Ali was killed in cold blood by Pius Mukandi alias Jamba on 25 May 2022 in Nyatsime.
Her dismembered body parts were later discovered in a disused well at Laina Mukandi’s homestead in Beatrice. Laina is the mother to Pius.
Sikhala was arrested and faced two charges, one of inciting public violence for allegedly saying that Ali’s death had to be avenged, and the other of obstruction of justice for accusing ZANU PF PF of being behind the murder of Ali, thereby misleading the police.
He was convicted of both charges and was released last month after spending 595 days in prison.
A day after his release, Sikhala posted on his X account that Ali had to be buried “as soon as possible”. He said:

It’s sad that Moreblessing Ali has still not been buried since my arrest. This issue needs to come to closure. I am engaging my clients, the Ali family, to make arrangements for her burial as soon as possible.

Former Zengeza West Member of Parliament Job Sikhala has challenged his conviction and sentence for public violence incitement by Magistrate Tafadzwa Miti last month.
Sikhala and co-accused, Godfrey Sithole were on 30 January 2024 handed two-year prison sentences wholly suspended for 5 years for contravening section 187(1) (a) of the Criminal Code as read with section 36(1)(a) of the Criminal Code.
According to the Zimbabwe Lawyers for Human Rights, in a notice of appeal filed at Harare High Court on Wednesday, Sikhala’s lawyers Jeremiah Bamu and Harrison Nkomo of the Zimbabwe Lawyers for Human Rights asked the High Court to overturn and set aside Sikhala’s conviction and sentence and to substitute this with passing a verdict of not guilty and acquit him.
Bamu and Nkomo argued that Magistrate Miti erred and misdirected herself in convicting and sentencing Sikhala.

Sikhala Challenges Conviction And Sentence For Incitement

Former Zengeza West MP, <a href="https://pindula.co.zw/Job_Sikhala">Job Sikhala</a>, has left the Citizens’ Coalition for Change (CCC), describing the opposition party as a “carcass”.
Addressing the media in Harare on Thursday, 08 February, Sikhala said it was pointless clinging to CCC and hoping that it will be the vehicle to bring about democratic change in Zimbabwe. He said:

The mass democratic struggle is people-driven and owned. Every struggle waged throughout the world has succeeded when people own it. The masses must own the next decisive stage of our struggle.
Whether I will be there with you or not, as my enemies have not shelved their plan to assassinate me for the sins best known to themselves, this process must proceed uninhibited to finality.
With or without resources, the people shall carry out this most important task in the decisive phase of our history and our people’s struggle against tyranny for their freedom, dignity and prosperity.
To all those who have retained the democratic right to cling to the CCC carcass, I wish them all the best in the project.

Sikhala’s announcement comes nearly two weeks after the party’s founding leader Nelson Chamisa quit CCC saying it had been hijacked by ZANU PF.
Sikhala was freed from jail recently after spending 595 days in pre-trial detention on allegations of inciting public violence.
On Wednesday, Sikhala was convicted of publishing falsehoods prejudicial to the state by Harare Magistrate Feresi Chakanyuka. The court will deliver its sentence on 16 February.

Job Sikhala Quits CCC, Calls The Opposition Party A "Carcass"

Former Zengeza West MP, Job Sikhala, has been found guilty of publishing falsehoods prejudicial to the state when he allegedly tweeted that a police officer fatally struck an infant with a baton.
The alleged crime dates back to 2021 and relates to a viral video of a woman holding a baby in one hand and clutching onto a police officer with the other claiming the cop had killed the infant. 
In a post in X this Wednesday, the Zimbabwe Lawyers for Human Rights (ZLHR) said Sikhala was convicted by Harare Magistrate Feresi Chakanyuka for allegedly communicating falsehoods but did not state if Sikhala has been sentenced for the crime. Said ZLHR:

Magistrate Feresi Chakanyuka convicts former Zengeza West MP Hon. Job Sikhala for publishing falsehoods prejudicial to the state in a case in which he was arrested in 2021 for allegedly communicating falsehoods on X, when he allegedly tweeted that an infant had died on the spot in Harare after a Zimbabwe Republic Police officer had struck the baby with a truncheon.

Former Mt Pleasant MP, Fadzayi Mahere was convicted of publishing falsehoods in April 2023 after she allegedly posted the same on video on X (formerly Twitter). She was fined US$500.
Amnesty International condemned Mahere’s conviction saying it was an assault on freedom of expression, and the government was using a non-existent law to prosecute her.

Sikhala Found Guilty Of Publishing Falsehoods

Former Information Minister Jonathan Moyo has criticised Job Sikhala, the former Zengeza West legislator, for visiting ‘Prophet’ Blessing Chiza of Eagle Life Church in Bulawayo describing the visit as a staged fraudulent spectacle. Chiza prayed for Sikhala during his time in prison, and upon his release, he expressed gratitude to the church for their support.
Sikhala, accompanied by his wife, visited the church and asked for continued prayers, stating that his experience in prison was difficult. He also told the preacher that he was failing to sleep after he dreamt of himself being informed not to wear suits. Chiza said Sikhala must do as he was told in the dream. He said:

I’m not prophesying. I’m interpreting because I don’t want people saying Chiza prophesied to him. No, It’s a dream he was given, I am just interpreting the prophetic dream that Job Sikhala is looking for interpretation. He is failing to sleep because it’s from God that’s why he’s like that… My question when I looked at you when you were there I said why is this man still wearing suits when he was told to stop wearing suits. From today, stop wearing suits. Do what you were told. All the things in that dream, follow them… And you found yourself, from that day, there is something that came upon you you don’t even understand but when you’re speaking, you hear the voice of Nelson Mandela coming through you and even people are saying you are now talking like Nelson Mandela… Even those who are listening to him, you can hear the spirit of Mandela, the voice of Mandela.

However, Moyo strongly criticized Sikhala’s visit, stating that it undermined Sikhala’s credibility as a serious politician. Moyo labelled the church event as a fraudulent scam, comparing it to the practices of TB Joshua, a controversial Nigerian preacher. According to Moyo, politics and religion should be kept separate, and political leaders should not engage in such outrageous scams if they want to be taken seriously by the public. He said:

This fraudulent spectacle staged by @ProphetDrBChiza in Bulawayo on Sunday is neither an interpretation of anything, let alone of any dream as claimed, nor a prophecy; it’s a criminal scam, TB Joshua style, and it has no place in serious or progressive politics. It must be said that @JobSikhala1 ought to know better or he should be better advised. In politics, there are some red lines that political leaders who want to be taken seriously by the public in the public domain must not cross, and this kind of outrageous scam is one of those lines. Politics is not a religion and has absolutely nothing to do with religion; it is the secular praxis – interactive behaviour- of groups of men and women with shared aspirations in pursuit of political power to execute common interests or objectives through the institutions of government and the state!

In Zimbabwe, politicians often use religion to gain support from the predominantly Christian community. Even before colonial times, Africans believed that leaders were chosen by gods or ancestors. Spirit mediums were consulted during the installation of kings to determine the rightful leader. In modern times, both the ruling party ZANU PF and opposition leaders frequently visit churches to appeal to congregants for their votes. Some church leaders even use their platforms to campaign for specific individuals.
There are rumours that Job Sikhala, who recently spent time in prison, wants to leverage his popularity gained from persecution to gain power. His release from prison coincided with the resignation of Nelson Chamisa, the former leader of the Citizens Coalition for Change (CCC), citing infiltration and hijacking by ZANU PF and its allies within CCC. Some analysts see this coincidence as suspicious, suggesting that there might have been a deal with the government to release Sikhala and fill the opposition power vacuum left by Chamisa’s departure. Sikhala denies allegations of negotiating his release and claims Sengezo Tshabangu, the disputed CCC interim secretary-general would want to be associated with an “icon” that’s why he claimed that he negotiated Sikhala’s release.

Former Minister Moyo Criticizes Sikhala For Visiting Chiza's Church, Calls It A Fraudulent Spectacle

The Government has dismissed claims that former CCC legislator Job Sikhala was a political prisoner, saying instead he was a common criminal.
In <a href="https://www.herald.co.zw/sikhala-not-a-political-detainee/">a statement</a> last night, Information, Publicity and Broadcasting Services Minister Jenfan Muswere said that Sikhala was convicted in terms of the country’s laws for inciting violence, hence his arrest was not politically motivated. Said Muswere:

Political crimes (and hence political prisoners) must be differentiated from the activities and behaviours of common criminals. Mr Sikhala was arrested and convicted in terms of the laws of the country.
</blockquote>
He said no one was above the law, and that law enforcement agents will not hesitate to bring perpetrators of crimes to account without fear or favour. Said Muswere:

The State will not be hindered in its effort to allow the generality of its citizenry to enjoy all fundamental human rights ascribed to them by our Constitution by any individual or class of individuals through the proliferation of hate speech and incitement to violence.
Mr Sikhala was found guilty of inciting public violence by the courts and he is thus not a political prisoner…
Those who commit crimes will meet their day in court and the judiciary will adjudicate without any fear or favour.

Sikhala was released from Chikurubi Maximum Security Prison early this week where he was in pretrial detention for nearly 600 days.
He was jailed in June 2022 on allegations of inciting the public to avenge the death of Moreblessing Ali, a CCC activist, who was a resident of Nyatsime.
Ali was brutally murdered and her body dismembered and thrown into a well by Pius Jamba believed to be a member of ZANU PF.
Magistrate Tafadzwa Miti handed Sikhala a wholly suspended two-year jail sentence.
He has been arrested over 60 times, with a Harare court describing him as a habitual offender though he has only one conviction which he intends to appeal against at the High Court.
Critics said Sikhala was a political prisoner after he was denied bail by the courts which resulted in his lenghty pre-trial detention.
Furthermore, some individuals linked to ZANU PF, have openly threatened violence but have never been arrested, thus raising concerns about law enforcement agents’ impartiality.

Sikhala Is Not A Political Prisoner But A Common Criminal - Govt

Former Citizens Coalition for Change (CCC) lawmaker <a href="https://pindula.co.zw/Job_Sikhala">Job Sikhala</a> said he is facing new arrest threats for granting interviews to journalists.
Speaking to <a href="https://www.newzimbabwe.com/i-am-facing-fresh-arrest-threats-says-sikhala-adds-he-has-been-ordered-to-stop-press-interviews/">NewZimbabwe.com</a> at his home in Chitungwiza on Thursday, the former Zengeza West MP said State agents had informed him to stop entertaining journalists. Said Sikhala:

I am now facing new threats. A deep state has informed me to stop these interviews.
</blockquote>
“Deep State” refers to a body of people, typically influential members of government agencies or the military, believed to be involved in the secret manipulation or control of government policy.
Sikhala said he needs a break as he maps his way forward following the closure of his law firm during his time in jail. He said:

I don’t know where to start from. I still need to reflect on whether I still need to go and pursue my legal profession so this is my time for reflection.
</blockquote>

"Sikhala Facing Fresh Arrest Threats"

CCC deputy spokesperson Gift “Ostallos” Siziva has suggested that former Zengeza West MP, Job Sikhala, is ungrateful after he said the opposition party abandoned him during his incarceration at Chikurubu Maximum Security Prison for nearly 600 days.
Sikhala was freed on Tuesday, 30 January, after spending nearly 600 days of pre-trial detention for inciting public violence in Nyatsime in 2022.
Speaking to <a href="https://www.sabcnews.com/sabcnews/sikhala-blames-zim-opposition-leaders-for-abandoning-him/">SABC News</a> at his home in Chitungwiza, hours after his release, Sikhala said that only his family and close associates pushed for his freedom during his incarceration. He said:

However, Siziva, who worked closely with former party leader Nelson Chamisa during campaigns ahead of the August 2023 general elections, said they visited Sikhala’s family several times and also donated cash as well as groceries for their upkeep. Said Siziva:

Sikhala and his co-accused CCC activist Godfrey Karakadzayi Sithole were convicted on the 24th of January 2024 on charges of inciting public violence by Harare Magistrate Tafadzwa Miti.
Miti sentenced Sikhala to serve two years in prison, which she however wholly suspended on condition of good behaviour.

Sikhala Is Ungrateful, We Supported His Family During His Incarceration - Ostallos

Zimbabwean opposition politician Job Sikhala is set to appeal his conviction and sentence for public violence incitement charges, his lawyer, Harrison Nkomo said on Tuesday.
Sikhala and co-accused, Godfrey Sithole were on Tuesday, 30 January, handed wholly suspended two-year prison sentences by Harare magistrate Tafadzwa Miti.
Sithole was released in November 2022 on bail, along with 14 others, but Sikhala was denied bail several times and spent nearly 600 days in pre-trial detention.
Addressing reporters at the Harare Magistrates Court, Nkomo said they were filing a High Court appeal against both conviction and sentence. He said:

The prosecution should not have happened in the first place; we must not glorify wrong things.
My respective view is that his arrest was not supposed to have been effected. Equally, the prosecution and subsequent conviction.
That being the case, we are taking the matter up with the High Court on appeal.
What we want is an acquittal, not a conviction with a lighter sentence. No, we disagree with that.

Sikhala was arrested on 21 August 2020 in Tynwald North and was charged with incitement to commit public violence or alternatively, incitement to participate in a gathering with intent to promote public violence, breaches of peace or bigotry.
He was eventually granted $50 000 bail by High Court Judge, Justice Erica Ndewere on 22 September 2020.
Sikhala was also ordered to surrender his passport, to report three times a week to St Mary’s police station and not to post audio or videos on social media.
He was again arrested in June 2022 and charged with inciting violence when he allegedly threatened to avenge the murder of an opposition activist, Moreblessing Ali. A Harare court described him as a habitual offender.
Following his arrest for the violence in Nyatsime, Sikhala was denied bail several times which resulted in him spending 595 days in pre-trial detention.

Sikhala Accuses CCC Leaders Of Abandoning Him

Former MDC-99 leader Job Sikhala said he does not know disputed Citizens Coalition for Change (CCC) interim secretary general <a href="https://pindula.co.zw/Sengezo_Tshabangu">Sengezo Tshabangu</a> and has never met him.
Speaking to <a href="https://www.newzimbabwe.com/i-do-not-know-tshabangu-i-have-never-met-him-says-freed-sikhala-after-self-styled-ccc-sgs-lawyers-try-to-court-him/">NewZimbabwe.com</a> a day after his release from prison where he spent 595 days in pretrial detention on charges of inciting public violence, Sikhala said he has never met Tshabangu or talked to him.
This comes after Tshabangu claimed last year that he was negotiating with the State to secure Sikhala’s release.
Furthermore, a day before his eventual release, Sikhala was pictured in court with Tshabangu’s lawyers Lewis Uriri and Nqobani Sithole.
However, Sikhala said he was later informed that Tshabangu’s lawyers attempted to talk to him. He said:

The truth of the matter is that I have never seen or known anyone called Sengezo Tshabangu. If we meet in the streets we might even pass each other.
He might know me but I do not know him. I heard from colleagues that he joined the MDC-T in 2005 after the split and became the MDC-T Provincial Chairperson for Matabeleland North.
I have never talked to him and I do not know his intentions. I would be interested in seeing him.
I was told that during my court proceedings, his lawyers were there and attempted to talk to me as if they were part of those who came out in solidarity.
I was later told and was shocked but then you can get solidarity from anywhere.
You can call him, he might know me from the news but I do not know the guy.

Sikhala’s arrest in June 2022 resulted in him missing an opportunity to retain his Zengeza West Parliamentary seat in the 2023 August general elections.
Sikhala and another CCC activist Godfrey Karakadzayi Sithole were convicted on the 24th of January 2024 on charges of inciting public violence by Harare Magistrate Tafadzwa Miti.
Miti sentenced Sikhala to serve two years in prison, which she however wholly suspended on condition of good behaviour.
