A Zambian politician and member of the ruling United Party for National Development (UPND) has said the Kariba Dam is full and power generation is being conducted normally.
<a href="https://www.pindula.co.zw/Joseph_Kalimbwe">Joseph Kalimbwe</a>‘s remarks come as the Zambezi River Authority (ZRA) has advised the Zimbabwe Power Company (ZPC), a subsidiary of ZESA Holdings, that it has <a href="https://zero.pindula.co.zw/severe-load-shedding-looms-as-zra-tells-zesa-to-shut-down-kariba-power-station/">already used more water than it had been allocated, therefore, must shut down</a> its Kariba Hydro Power Station (Kariba South Bank Power Station) power plant until at least January 2023 to allow the dam to refill, according to Pindula News.
Kariba Hydro Power Station is Zimbabwe’s only reliable power plant, as Hwange Thermal Power Station constantly breaks down due to ageing equipment while the other smaller thermal power plants, such as Harare, Bulawayo, and Munyati are also unreliable due to coal shortages.
The closure of the plant could worsen Zimbabwe’s power crisis.
In response to the development, Kalimbwe who is a staunch critic of the Zimbabwean government expressed shock. He said in a post seen by Pindula News:

It’s rain season, the Kariba Dam is full. We have full electricity generation this side – perhaps with some issues in certain areas. But unless there is another Kariba, I don’t see why others are claiming and telling their people that the dam is empty!!! 
I trust the science, if you say the Zambezi river is empty in August or October, I will understand. If you say it’s empty in December – during rain season – you are peddling political lies !!!

Zambia has 3 456.8MW of installed electricity generation capacity, of which about 85% is hydro-based. 
In July 2022, Zambia declared that the country has <a href="https://zero.pindula.co.zw/zambia-declares-power-surplus-of-1-000mw/">a surplus capacity of about 1 000 megawatts (MW)</a> at a time the country is also enjoying an economic rebound.
Although there are pockets of private sector activity in the generation, transmission, and distribution, the vast majority of power in Zambia is operated by ZESCO, the vertically integrated state-owned utility.  
However, the sector is opening up to new IPPs for on-grid and off-grid transactions. 
The government of Zambia expects to bring online additional MW of solar, hydro, and thermal power through 2030. 
Following the announcement that Kariba water levels were reaching unusable levels, Zambia’s power utility, ZESCO Limited, said <a href="https://zero.pindula.co.zw/zambia-will-not-experience-load-shedding-zesco-speaks-on-kariba-dam-low-water-levels/">there will be no load shedding in Zambia</a> as the existing generation capacity can provide consistent power to its local customers, Pindula News previously reported.
ZESCO Limited Board Chairperson Vickson N’cube said Zambia no longer relies on Kariba Dam alone and has the cushion of the 750 MW Kafue Gorge Lower Power Station that will be fully operational at the end of November 2022.
Kariba has a generation capacity of 2 130 megawatts split between Zambia and Zimbabwe, which are separated by the Zambezi.

Zambian Politician Says "It’s Rain Season, Kariba Dam Is Full, Unless There's Another Kariba"

Zambian nationals are reportedly chasing away Congolese nationals telling them to go back to their country. In a video clip posted on social media by a Zambian politician, <a href="https://www.pindula.co.zw/Joseph_Kalimbwe">Joseph Kalimbwe</a>, the narrator who is speaking in Shona says Zambians are assaulting Congolese at the Kasumbalesa border telling them to return to their country. It is not known why the dispute erupted. Young men are seen holding wooden sticks and chasing the alleged Congolese nationals. Watch the video below for more:

<h2>Some context:</h2>
Zambia’s economy has <a href="https://zero.pindula.co.zw/the-zambian-kwacha-overtakes-the-russian-ruble-to-become-best-performing-currency-globally/">enjoyed a steady rise in the past 24 months</a> resulting in some nationals of neighbouring countries seeking economic refugee in that country.
The foreign nationals include Congolese nationals who are fleeing from the ongoing conflict between Congolese troops and M23 rebels.
The fighting has forced nearly 200 000 people to flee their homes, according to Human Rights Watch.
There have been attacks carried out by various armed groups in the Democratic Republic of the Congo in 2021 and 2022. 
The attacks have killed 629 and injured 321 (not including rebel casualties). At least 82 perpetrators were also killed and one injured in these attacks.
There are heightened concerns that the abusive rebel force, largely inactive for a decade, is receiving <a href="https://www.hrw.org/africa/rwanda">Rwandan</a> support for its operations in North Kivu province.

WATCH: Zambians Chase Away Congolese Nationals At Kasumbalesa Border

Zambia’s Lusaka mayor Chilando Chitangala has said the Lusaka council in collaboration with the Immigration department would soon descend on the foreigners trading in the capital city’s central business district while riding on fake Zambian names to cover up their illegal stay in the neighbouring country.
In a recent interview with a local radio station, Chitangala said 3 000 foreigners, mostly Zimbabweans, would be removed to restore sanity in the city.
Her remarks came as nearly 200 000 Zimbabweans are facing deportation from South Africa, where their stay on special exemption permits is on the line, with just under 12 months left to regularise their stay.
Other targeted foreigners in Zambia are from the Democratic Republic of Congo, Rwanda and Tanzania. Chitangala is quoted as having said:

They sell various goods such as second-hand clothes, biscuits, alcohol, plaiting hair among others.
</blockquote>
Chitangala added that illegal markets had sprouted in Lusaka due to unlicensed traders.
Chitangala said street vending in the CBD was causing chaos adding that efforts to organise the traders had been resisted. She added:

From our 2018 to 2019 counting, we found that we not only have Zambian street vendors, but a good number of our friends from neighbouring countries too are coming here and trading on the streets.
That includes Zimbabwe, Malawi, Tanzania, Rwanda and Congolese. It’s not only Zimbabwe. We are trying to organise our vendors by trying to move them back to their market stalls, and also provide new trading spaces.

But Zambia’s ruling United Party for National Development spokesperson Joseph Kalimbwe warned Chitangala against “issuing statements which have the potential to cause xenophobic attacks on African nationals in the city”. Kalimbwe said:

The Mayor of Lusaka must not be issuing statements which have the potential to cause xenophobic attacks on African nationals in the city. Why blame fellow Africans? There are Chinese &amp; Indian nationals who trade in Lusaka but no one speaks or threatens deportation on them!!!

Analysts say the effects of bad governance are forcing Zimbabweans to migrate to other neighbouring countries where they are ill-treated.

Lusaka Mayor Declares War On Vendors Majority Of Which Are Zimbabweans

Spokesperson of Zambia’s ruling United Party for National Development (UPND), Joseph Kalimbwe last week visited Harare briefly before returning to his homeland but not before he received multiple death threats on social media platforms.
Last week the 28-year-old announced on Twitter that he was in Harare, Zimbabwe, and this seemingly did not go down well with some Zimbabweans who threatened him with physical harm. <a href="https://twitter.com/joseph_kalimbwe/status/1447102319892500482">In a tweet this Sunday,</a> Kalimbwe said:

I left Harare friends. The comments of life threats on social media from users after tweeting about briefly being in the city are severe.
We’re one Africa who must be free to visit in any land. Perhaps, we will visit friends after 2023, it’s just 50 Minutes away from Lusaka.
</blockquote>
The UPND is seen as close to Zimbabwe’s main opposition party, the MDC Alliance after inviting its leaders, Nelson Chamisa and Tendai Biti and other opposition figures in the region to Zambia President Hakainde Hichilema’s inauguration.
President Emmerson Mnangagwa’s spokesperson, George Charamba recently attacked Hichilema as a “sellout”.
