A 43-year-old woman has been sentenced to 10 years in prison by the Mutare Magistrates’ Court after she was found guilty of facilitating the rape of her 6-year-old daughter, in Penhalonga, in 2022.
The National Prosecution Authority (NPA) confirmed the case, saying the woman assisted an adult male unknown to the prosecutor, to rape the child one afternoon soon after the child arrived home from school. The NPA said:

The mother undressed the child while the unknown male was watching sitting on the bed. She then instructed her child to lie on her back on the bed.
The unknown male took off his clothes and raped the child once, while the mother was watching, sitting on a chair in the bedroom.
The matter eventually came to light in April 2024 when the child was living with her grandmother and she discovered that the child was suffering from urinary incontinence.

Urinary incontinence is the unintentional loss of bladder control, leading to urine leakage, and can range from occasional leaks when sneezing or coughing to a sudden, strong urge to urinate that doesn’t allow enough time to reach a bathroom.
The child narrated that it began soon after she was raped. She revealed the role that her mother had played in the ordeal.

Woman Jailed 10 Years For Assisting A Man To Rape Her 6-Year-Old Daughter

Only one of four suspects accused of raping a 14-year-old Form 2 learner was found guilty by the Harare Magistrates Court, while the others were acquitted. The controversial ruling was delivered recently.
The court heard that on the evening of October 20, 2024, the complainant left home after being reprimanded by her mother.
She was lured to the home of the first accused, a 30-year-old man, under the pretence that he was offering her accommodation for the night. Once there, she encountered the other three suspects, aged 30, 34, and 36.
The four men threatened her with a knife, beat her with a hosepipe, and spiked her drink with an unknown substance, rendering her unconscious. While she was incapacitated, they took turns sexually assaulting her.
The following morning, she awoke in the first accused’s house, in pain and with clear signs of the assault visible on her body.
Distressed, she confided in her aunt, who encouraged her to report the incident to the police. Following the report, she underwent a medical examination.
Ultimately, the first accused was found guilty of rape and sentenced to 15 years in prison. The other three suspects were acquitted at the conclusion of the state’s case.
In response, the National Prosecuting Authority (NPA) has said it is considering an appeal against the acquittals of the three accomplices.

One Convicted, Three Walk Free In 14-Year-Old Learner Rape Case

Police in Harare have expressed concern over an increase in rape cases involving minor children.
ZRP spokesperson in Harare Province, Inspector Luckmore Chakanza urged parents and guardians to be vigilant and take proactive steps to protect their children from harm.
He also called upon parents to monitor their children’s online activities and ensure they are not exposed to potential sexual predators. Said Insp Chakanza:

In one of the cases, police arrested and released a 15-year-old boy into the custody of his guardian for raping a 9-year-old girl.
The boy once stayed at the same house as the girl in Kuwadzana.
Sometime in September 2019, the girl’s mother went to meet her brother at a footbridge in Kuwadzana 3 leaving the girl alone at home.
The accused person took advantage and invited the girl to their room and raped her.
He threatened to assault her if she disclosed the matter to anyone.
On another date in October 2019, the girl’s mother went to town leaving her at home, and the accused lured her to the bathroom and raped her. He threatened to kill her if she told anyone.
In the same month, the boy followed the girl to the toilet and raped her.
The matter came to light last month when the girl visited her grandmother in Masvingo for the school holidays when she disclosed the matter to her.
A report was lodged on May 20 leading to the arrest of the accused person.
He was released into the custody of his guardian and the victim was referred to the Family Support Clinic for medical examination.

He said in another case, a 12-year-old boy raped a 10-year-old girl in Glen Lorne. Said Insp Chakanza:

The girl and the boy’s uncle are tenants at a house in the suburb.
The boy visited his uncle for last year’s December school holidays.
The boy invited the girl to play with him in the garage.
He raped the girl and threatened to assault her if she told anyone.
The boy returned to Glen Lorne for the April school holidays and raped the complainant again in the garage.
The boy told his friend what he did to the girl and the friend told the girl’s mother.
</blockquote>
He said the Police have a zero-tolerance policy towards child abuse and will ensure that rapists are arrested and prosecuted.
