Former Warriors coach Kalisto Pasuwa has been appointed as the interim coach of Malawi’s senior men’s national football team, Flames, just three days after the departure of Patrick Mabedi.
The Football Association of Malawi (FAM) confirmed Pasuwa’s appointment in a statement released on Friday.
This decision comes after a virtual meeting held earlier that day, during which FAM ratified its Emergency Committee’s recommendation to part ways with Mabedi following a series of disappointing results.
Pasuwa, who is also the coach of FCB Nyasa Big Bullets, will now lead the Flames as they look to turn their fortunes around. Reads the statement:

The committee resolved to approve the recommendation to appoint an interim technical panel comprising Kalisto Pasuwa as Head of Technical Panel, Peter Mponda as First Assistant Coach, Prichard Mwansa as Second Assistant Coach, Kinnah Phiri and Young Chimodzi as Technical advisers.

According to <a href="https://malawi24.com/2024/11/01/pasuwa-named-flames-interim-coach-reunites-with-mponda-as-deputy/">Malawi24</a>,  Pasuwa is set to take over as Malawi’s permanent coach after the team completes its remaining two games in the 2025 Africa Cup of Nations qualifiers.
FAM dismissed Mabedi on Tuesday following a disappointing qualifying campaign, where the team lost all four matches.
Mabedi’s record included a 3-2 defeat at home to Burundi, a 3-1 loss away to Burkina Faso, and two back-to-back defeats to Senegal—first losing 4-0 in the first leg and then suffering a last-minute 1-0 defeat at Bingu National Stadium.
Pasuwa has achieved cult-hero status at FCB Nyasa Big Bullets, having led the team to five consecutive domestic league championships since joining the club in 2018.
His impressive track record also includes nine consecutive league titles, dating back to his time with Dynamos, where he won four titles between 2011 and 2014.
He will begin his tenure with an away match against Burundi in a dead-rubber fixture for the 2025 AFCON qualifiers on November 15, 2024.

Kalisto Pasuwa Named Malawi Caretaker Coach

Malawi’s FA has appointed FCB Nyasa Bullets coach Kalisto Pasuwa to manage the central African country’s Under-23 Football Team which will participate in the COSAFA Senior Challenge Cup in Durban, South Africa next month, reported <a href="https://mwnation.com/pasuwa-to-take-charge-of-u-23-bullets-not-aware/">Nation</a>.
Football Association of Malawi (FAM) general secretary Alfred Gunda on Monday confirmed to Nation the Zimbabwean coach’s appointment. Said Gunda:

Since we will be sending a developmental team to the COSAFA Cup as the senior team will be busy with the [2026] World Cup qualifiers, Pasuwa has been appointed to take charge of the team. The nitty-gritty is yet to be finalised, but that is how we are proceeding.
</blockquote>
However, Pasuwa’s club said it was not aware of the arrangement. Bullets chief executive officer Suzgo Nyirenda said:

Of course, we have heard about it from the grapevine, but FAM has not approached us.
Should they approach us, we’ll have to look at the terms because Pasuwa is on a running contract.
What needs to be taken into consideration is that we are on a mission to defend the quadruple.
So, when they approach us, we’ll have to see if the move will not affect our plans.

Pasuwa himself declined to comment on the issue when he was approached by the publication.
This development comes just two weeks after Pasuwa reportedly rejected the then-vacant Warriors job, which the ZIFA Normalisation Committee gave to Manica Diamonds coach Jairos Tapera last week.

Pasuwa Named Malawi National U-23 Coach, FCB Nyasa Bullets Not Aware

Former Dynamos and Warriors coach Kalisto Pasuwa is said to be the highest-paid coach in Malawi, earning more than US$6 000 per month.
Pasuwa is in charge of free-spending Nyasa Big Bullets with whom he won all four trophies they competed in last season.
According to a Malawi publication, <a href="https://mwnation.com/pasuwa-highest-paid-coach/">The Nation</a>, Nyasa Big Bullets are reportedly paying Pasuwa US$6 050 per month.
His first salary was reportedly US$5 000, but his contract has a clause of a 10 percent hike annually.
The former national team coach is also getting an equivalent of $180 as a fuel allowance, a similar amount in winning bonus, a $120 communication allowance and a $60 monthly training allowance.
Other benefits include a house and a fully paid subscription to DStv.
Pasuwa, a four-time Castle Lager Premier Soccer League coach, won the Airtel Top 8, the FDH Cup, the league championship and the Castel Cup, in Malawi in the 2023 season.
Pasuwa won his fifth consecutive TNM Super League title with the Malawi champions last season.
During his successful stint as Dynamos coach, Pasuwa won 12 trophies which include four league titles.

Kalisto Pasuwa Is The Highest Paid Coach In Malawi

Former Dynamos and Warriors coach Kalisto Pasuwa has been named the TNM Super League Coach of the Season for 2023 in Malawi where he is currently working.
Pasuwa was honoured at an award ceremony held in Blantyre, Malawi on Friday night.
This comes after the Zimbabwean coach had a clean sweep in the just-ended season, winning all four trophies on the table, including the league, with Nyasa Big Bullets.
Pasuwa won his fifth consecutive TNM Super League title with the Malawi champions last month.
Bullets lifted a fifth successive league title with 60 points after winning 16 out of the 30 fixtures, drawing 12 times and losing twice.
The 2023 TNM Super League Coach of the Season was Pasuwa’s second successive accolade after he was also named Coach of the Season for the 2022 campaign.
Speaking to <a href="https://nyasabigbullets.com/slider/pasuwa-shares-the-secret-behind-bullets-continued-success/">the club’s website</a> last month, Pasuwa said that the secret to his team’s success has everything to do with the bond that he builds with his players. He said:

It hasn’t been easy for me to win these titles. But one area is to have control of your dressing room. These players need a special bond with their head coach.
You need to be closer to them. If I can tell you, I always visit all these players, I know where they live and I eat what they eat.
So, when they are playing football, they play for you even if the going gets tough, they always give everything for you, and that has been the key secret.

Bullets won the TNM Super League, the Airtel Top 8, the Castel Challenge and the FDH Cup in the 2023 season.

Pasuwa Wins Big In Malawi, Reveals "Secret" To His Success

Kalisto Pasuwa won the quadruple in Malawi after his club Nyasa Bullets were crowned champions of the Airtel Top 8 following their win over MAFCO in the final at Kamuzu Stadium in Blantyre on Saturday.
Nyasa Bullets pocketed 17 million kwacha (about US$10 000) from winning the trophy and also became the first club in Malawian history to win all domestic competitions on offer in one season.
Pasuwa’s men had also won the FDH Cup, the league championship and the Castel Cup, which they won the previous weekend.
The former Dynamos and Zimbabwe national team coach paid tribute to his players for the historic triumph. He said (via <a href="https://www.sundaymail.co.zw/pasuwa-completes-clean-sweep-in-malawi">The Herald</a>):

It has not been us only but everybody who was there for us. This is the season where we struggled mostly on away games, but we thank the boys for this achievement.

The Airtel Top 8 final was played at Kamuzu Stadium while the other two cup finals which Big Bullets won were played at Bingu National Stadium in Lilongwe.
Pasuwa is by far Zimbabwe’s most successful coach in a foreign league as he has already won multiple titles in Malawi.

Kalisto Pasuwa Wins All Four Trophies On Offer In Malawian Football League

Kalisto Pasuwa’s agent, Gibson Mahachi, has played down reports claiming that South African Premiership club Kaizer Chiefs want the FCB Nyasa Bullets coach.
In an interview with Mawalian publication, <a href="https://mwnation.com/bullets-say-pasuwa-going-nowhere/">The Nation</a>, Mahachi said it was expected that teams would enquire about the coach “owing to his performance and achievements”. Added Mahachi:

But he is still contracted to Bullets. So, it is something that has to be borne in mind.

Mahachi was recently quoted by the online publication southafrican.com as having said that Kaizer Chiefs have not made any formal approach for Pasuwa. He said:

I haven’t heard anything official in that regard. There is nothing to talk about any other team that wants him. From my end, I have nothing official from Chiefs.
</blockquote>
Pasuwa’s Malawian representative Felix Ngamanya Sapao, conceded that another South African club, Richards Bay, has expressed interest in the former Warriors coach. He said:

I haven’t heard anything official in that regard. There is nothing to talk about any other team that wants him. From my end, I have nothing official from Chiefs.
I am not sure about Chiefs, what I know is that there were enquiries from Richards Bay and another top Ugandan club.
But then Pasuwa has a contract that runs until 31st December 2024. He gets good pay at Bullets which has an automatic 10 percent increase every year. So, perhaps let us wait and see.

Richards Bay recently sacked another Zimbabwean coach, Kaitano Tembo, after a poor run at the club which saw him winning only four matches out of eighteen.
Meanwhile, FCB Nyasa Bullets chief administration officer Albert Chigoga insisted Pasuwa is going nowhere and “is already planning for the 2024 season.”
Pasuwa is on course to win an unprecedented quadruple in Malawi. So far, Bullets have a treble.
They defended the TNM Super League for the fifth consecutive time, won the FHD Bank Cup and were crowned inaugural champions of the newly-introduced Castel Challenge Cup at the weekend.
They are chasing a quadruple as they face Malawi Defence Force (MDF) outfit Mafco in the Airtel Top 8 final.

Nyasa Big Bullets coach Kalisto Pasuwa is on the verge of winning a fourth trophy in Malawi this season.
The 52-year-old former Dynamos coach recently sealed his fourth straight TNM Super League championship title.
Nyasa Big Bullets have also won the Charity Shield and FDH Bank Cup, and are on course to retain the Airtel Cup.
The Blantyre-based club has one foot in the semi-final via a 7-0 quarter-final, first-leg win last weekend.
The deeply religious former Warriors and Young Warriors coach has attributed his success to divine guidance.
Speaking in an interview with <a href="https://www.sundaymail.co.zw/kalistos-juggernaut-continues">The Sunday Mail</a>, Pasuwa said that they are now focused on trying to win a fourth trophy this season. He said:

Pasuwa Chasing Four Trophies In One Season In Malawi

Former Dynamos and Warriors coach Kalisto Pasuwa has signed a contract extension with Malawian Super League champions Nyasa Big Bullets.
The new three-year deal will see Pasuwa, who has won three successive league titles with Bullets, staying at the club until 2025. The club said in a statement on Wednesday:

Nyasa Big Bullets FC is delighted to announce that Kalisto Pasuwa has signed a new contract to extend his commitment to the club.
The head coach has signed a three-year deal to remain at the helm of The People’s Team until 2025.

Pasuwa won his first title in his debut season in 2019 before leading the team to another league title in the 2020 season.
In 2021, the Zimbabwean won both the league and the Airtel Top 8 Cup.

Kalisto Pasuwa Pens New Contract With Nyasa Big Bullets

The Zimbabwean Warriors are among 24 African national teams set to play at this year’s African Cup of Nations edition in Egypt. Today, a draw to determine which team falls in which group shall be conducted in Egypt.
They are currently in seeding pot 4. The pots and seedings of the teams were decided based on the latest Fifa World Cup rankings, released on April 4 2019.
This year’s edition marks Warriors’ fourth appearance at the Afcon finals. In the previous editions of the competitions, the national soccer team was knocked out in the group stages.
Recently, the Warriors under the leadership of Kalisto Pasuwa, exited the scene after collecting only one point. They were in a group that consisted Rihad Mahrez’s Algeria, Sadio Mane’s Senegal and Tunisia.
Reaching at least the quarter finals is the least expected result by Zimbabwe’s footbal governing board, ZIFA.

AFCON Draw To Be Conducted Today In Egypt

Kalisto Pasuwa won the Malawi Super League with Nyasa Big Bullets with two games to play.
Bullets registered a 3-0 win over Red Lions. Pasuwa joined Nyasa Bullets in October and signed a two and a half month-deal. He was tasked to win the title which he achieved on Saturday. He is now likely to get a long-term contract which will see him guiding the club in 2019 season.
Meanwhile, Pasuwa’s team failed to progress to the first round of the CAF Champions League after losing 4-3 on penalties to Kenyan side Gor Mahia.

Pasuwa Wins Malawi Super League

Former Warriors coach Kalisto Pasuwa signed a two and half months contract to coach Malawi league side Nyasa Big Bullets, with a mandate to guide the team to the title. He was unveiled at the club’s headquarters in Blantyre yesterday, and takes over from Rodgers Yasin, who was sacked last week over poor results.
Nyasa Big Bullets are on top of the TNM Super League log with two points and have three games in hand, with eight matches remaining until the end of the season. If Pasuwa’s manages to win the title he will get a long term deal which includes taking the team in the CAF Champions League.

In an interview with NewsDay, former Warriors coach Kalisto Pasuwa said he is not interested in coaching Dynamos again.
Said Pasuwa:

Pasuwa Rules Out A Return To Coach Dynamos

ZIFA vice-president Omega Sibanda yesterday told The Herald that the association’s leadership was in no hurry at the moment and were likely to convene a meeting this week to chart the way forward.
Said Sibanda:
<blockquote>Look here, Pasuwa’s contract has just expired, I think some four to five days ago. It is worthy to note that out of respect for him we couldn’t do anything until he had served his contract up to its end. We could not engage anyone during that period because we had to respect him as our coach. But now that it has come to an end we have to ensure that we have something in place. Obviously we need a coach as soon as yesterday but we have to do things properly. Hopefully, by the end of this week, we should be able to know where we are going from here.</blockquote>
He said they will not limit themselves to home-grown talent in the face of a strong debate that Zimbabwe has succeeded in the past under local coaches while foreigners like Valinhos and Tom Sainfeit have left ZIFA in all sorts of problems in deals that went sour.

Zifa in no hurry to appoint Pasuwa's successor

Announcing his availability for selection for the Warriors’ CAF 2019 qualification campaign, Willard Katsande also expressed his reservations with ZIFA’s decision to fire Pasuwa in the wake of the Warriors Nations Cup early exit.
Said Katsande:
<blockquote>I think that’s a big mistake to let coach Pasuwa leave the Warriors. As we all saw he has built a monster of a team with this Warriors squad, he had instilled a winning culture in the Warriors. He made everyone fall in love with the Warriors again and I think for the sake of continuity we should have kept him in charge. He knows how to play in the qualifiers, he knows how to win those games and how to motivate the team. He makes every individual feel important in the squad. I think we took 20 steps backwards by removing him from the seat because I think the Gabon tournament was a hurtful lesson that we all learned, we learnt the hard way and now we must make sure the Warriors qualify for the next edition then we talk about going beyond the group stages.</blockquote>
The Kaizer Chiefs midfielder also defended the Warriors and said that they were good and that there was no need to dissolve the team. Said Katsande:
<blockquote>We have one hell of a good team with quality players and we need to keep them together for our development in football and that’s why I wanted continuity. Bringing in a new coach may be good, but we will be starting afresh and we have the big task of qualifying.</blockquote>
