The Government, through the Ministry of Health and Child Care, has ordered an investigation into the popular beverage, Kambucha drink, to ascertain whether it has health benefits as claimed by its producers and consumers or is just an intoxicating concoction.
Last month the Masvingo City Council Town banned employees from consuming the Kambucha drink during working hours on the advice of council doctors who established that the drink was an alcoholic substance.
The ban followed incidents in which some city workers were reporting for work drunk while others were openly drinking Kambucha at work claiming it has medicinal properties.
Speaking at a post-Cabinet media briefing earlier this week, the Minister of Information, Publicity and Broadcasting Services Janfan Muswere said Kambucha is one of the drinks that are under probe. He said:

The Ministry of Health and Child Care, the Zimbabwe Republic Police and the Liquor Licensing Board are investigating, banning and licensing new drinks in the market, including the Kambucha beverage drink.

A kombi driver operating at corner Herbert Chitepo and Sixth Avenue, who only identified himself as Marvelous, told the <a href="https://www.bmetro.co.zw/kambucha-drink-withdrawn-from-shelves/">B-Metro</a> that Kambucha does get him drunk. He said:

The Kambucha number three does get me and my friends drunk so that’s why we buy it. It’s cheaper than alcohol and the police can’t arrest us for drinking Kambucha.
</blockquote>
The manufacturers of the Kombucha drink claim the beverage “boosts your immune system, helps with weight loss, wards off high blood pressure and prevents cancer.”
However, it is not known if the claims have been scientifically proven.
In an internal memo addressed to all heads of department within the Masvingo City Council towards the end of September 2023, Town Clerk Edward Mukaratirwa said:

It has come to our attention that some Council employees come to work whilst drunk due to the consumption of alcohol and other intoxicating substances.
It has also been noted that some employees are seen consuming Kambucha drink during working hours in the guise that it is medicinal.
However, we are reliably and authoritatively advised by the Council’s Medical Doctor that the drink contains alcohol.
In light of the above, it is advised that the consumption of Kambucha drink during working hours be banned with immediate effect.

Kombucha reportedly entered the Zimbabwean market from Zambia before Kambucha a local variant of the beverage, emerged on the market.
Some men consider the beverage an aphrodisiac and consume Kambucha for its supposedly sex-enhancing properties.

Govt Probes Kambucha Drink

Masvingo City Council Town Clerk Edward Mukaratirwa has banned employees from consuming the Kambucha/Kombucha drink during working hours on the advice of council doctors who established that the drink was an alcoholic substance.
The ban follows incidents in which some city workers have been reporting for work drunk while others were openly drinking Kambucha at work claiming it has medicinal properties.
But in an internal memo addressed to all heads of department within the local authority, Mukaratirwa announced a ban on the consumption of Kambucha during working hours. Reads the memo:

It has come to our attention that some Council employees come to work whilst drunk due to the consumption of alcohol and other intoxicating substances.
It has also been noted that some employees are seen consuming Kambucha drink during working hours in the guise that it is medicinal.
However, we are reliably and authoritatively advised by the Council’s Medical Doctor that the drink contains alcohol.
In light of the above, it is advised that the consumption of Kambucha drink during working hours be banned with immediate effect.
Furthermore, employees are discouraged at all costs to report for duty whilst drunk, for such behaviours constitute acts of misconduct in terms of the City of Masvingo Employment Code of Conduct.

Kambucha was introduced not too long ago and some of its consumers consider it to be an energy drink with medicinal properties.
Others, mostly men, consider the beverage an aphrodisiac and consume Kambucha for its supposedly sex-enhancing properties.

Masvingo Council Bans Workers From Drinking Kambucha At Work

Kambucha energy drink brewing company, Success Two, was on Wednesday this week dragged before the Magistrates Court in Harare for allegedly employing refugees who escaped from Tongogara Refugee Camp without work permits.
Success Two was represented by Fabian Ndayishimire who appeared separately with Rwandese and Congolese refugees who were arrested on allegations of working without permits.
Mukantwali Alphonsie, Masumbuko Mathias, Valentine Kabwe, Habimana Francis and Nyendwa Faustina appeared before Magistrate Yeukai Dzuda who granted them US$50 bail each.
The magistrate remanded the matter to 28 September 2023.
Dzuda ordered that the suspects should return to Tongogara Refugee Camp where they had escaped from.
The court heard that on 16 September, a team comprising police officers, staff from the Immigration Department and the President’s Office arrested Mukantwali at the Success Two company factory in Willowvale, Harare.
It is further alleged that Mukantwali was working at the company but did not have papers authorising her presence in Harare or to engage in employment.
She allegedly left Tongogara Refugee Camp without the knowledge of authorities as required by law.
Mukantwali’s accomplices who had also escaped from the refugee camp were also arrested.
The refugees were represented by Ashirl Mugiya.

Kambucha Drink Manufacturer Dragged To Court For Employing Refugees

Police say US$3 702 was stolen at Kambucha Holdings in Harare between 1 AM and 2 AM on Wednesday.
In a statement posted on their official Twitter page, the Zimbabwe Republic Police (ZRP) said eight armed suspects raided Kambucha Holdings and seized a firearm from a security guard who was manning the premises.
The suspects then held hostage 8 workers before ransacking the administration block and forcibly opening a safe that contained the cash. Police said:

The ZRP confirms that investigations are being conducted in connection with an alleged Armed Robbery incident that occurred at Kambucha Holdings, Harare at 0135 hrs today where USD3 702.00 was stolen.
8 suspects who were armed attacked a security guard, took his firearm and held hostage 8 workers before ransacking the Administration block and forced open a safe.
</blockquote>
Meanwhile, <a href="https://www.zimlive.com/armed-robbers-seize-cash-in-raid-at-drink-maker-kambucha/">ZimLive</a> had earlier reported sources as Kambucha as saying an estimated US$900 000 was stolen during the raid. Said a source:

The amount stolen is close to a million dollars but management plan to understate it to the police to avoid scrutiny.

Kambucha is an energy drink that its makers say has immune system-boosting qualities.

"US$3.7k, And Not US$900k Was Stolen From Kambucha"

Armed robbers allegedly overpowered security guards at a manufacturing plant of the Kambucha energy drink in Harare around 1 AM on Wednesday and stole about US$900 000.
The raid occurred at 17001 Sande Crescent in the Graniteside industrial area.
Zimbabwe Republic Police (ZRP) national spokesperson Assistant Commissioner Paul Nyathi confirmed to <a href="https://www.zimlive.com/armed-robbers-seize-us900000-in-raid-at-drink-maker-kambucha/">ZimLive</a> that police were investigating the armed robbery. He said:

We confirm the robbery but we are yet to ascertain how it happened and the exact of money stolen.
</blockquote>
ZimLive reported sources at the company as saying an estimated US$900 000 was taken by six armed men.
The suspects allegedly overpowered security guards to gain entry into the premises and then used explosives to blow up the safe where the money was kept. An employee said:
<blockquote>
