Two people from Kariba town, a man and a woman, have been missing since the end of last year, and their families are still searching for them as of January 16, 2025.
According to Mutsa Murombedzi, a CCC Member of Parliament (MP) representing Mashonaland West Province, a man known by the name Mativiri or Hambalala has not been seen since December 31st, 2024.
It is alleged that Mativiri went spearfishing in the Zambezi River, Kariba, and has not been seen since. Only his clothes have been recovered near the riverbank, along with his phone, which no longer had power, leading authorities to suspect that he may have gone into the water.
The other missing person, a woman called Sabina Shereni, was last seen on December 28th, 2024, heading to the Kariba General Hospital, but she never arrived at her destination.

Debbie Ottman, spokesperson for the Kariba Animal Welfare Trust Fund, urged residents to avoid traversing the bush and recommended walking in pairs to reduce the risk of lion attacks. A moderate magnitude 4.9 earthquake struck approximately 17 km South-Southeast of Kariba, in Mashonaland West Province, early on Monday morning. The quake occurred at a depth of 10 km at 05:39 AM (Harare Time) on December 23.
According to a report by <a href="https://www.volcanodiscovery.com/earthquakes/quake-info/10045592/mag5quake-Dec-23-2024-Zimbabwe-Zambia.html">Volcano Discovery</a>, which cites data from the United States Geological Survey (USGS), the details of the earthquake are as follows:

The closest larger town where the quake might have been felt is Kariba, a town with 28,000 inhabitants in Zimbabwe, in 17.5 km (11 mi) distance northwest of the epicentre. The earthquake occurred just three days after a magnitude 4.6 quake struck 26 km southeast of the resort town.

Earthquake Near Kariba Causes Moderate Shaking

Over 2,000 people have been vaccinated against cholera in Ward 2 of the Nyaminyami (Kariba) Rural District Council after an outbreak at the nearby Gatche Gatche fishing camp earlier this month.
One person has died, and the Ministry of Health and Child Care reported 97 suspected cholera cases as of yesterday, including five primary schoolchildren among the suspected cases.
Kariba District Medical Officer, Godfrey Muza, told <a href="https://www.newsday.co.zw/local-news/article/200035482/5-000-targeted-in-kariba-cholera-vaccination">NewsDay</a> on Sunday that more than 2,600 people have been vaccinated so far.
In response to the outbreak, organisers of the Nyaminyami Festival, scheduled for this Friday, have cancelled the event. Said Muza:

In a statement, Desmond Anele Gumbochumba, the Kariba District Development Coordinator and Civil Protection Unit Chairperson said that efforts are underway to reschedule the tournament, with plans to hold it in the first quarter of 2025.

One person has died and five others are receiving treatment following a cholera outbreak at Gache Gache Fishing Camp in Kariba District, Mashonaland West Province.
El Shaddai Gumbochuma, the District Development Coordinator, along with the Kariba District Civil Protection Unit, confirmed the outbreak last week. He said:

One person has died and has since been buried. At least five others are receiving treatment and recovering well.

According to <a href="https://www.newzimbabwe.com/cholera-outbreaks-hits-resort-town-of-kariba-one-death-and-14-suspected-cases-recorded/">NewZimbabwe.com</a>, there are concerns that the highly mobile fishmongers from Gache Gache Fishing Camp could spread the cholera outbreak to Kariba and nearby areas.
A report from the Ministry of Health and Child Care on Sunday, November 10, stated that no new deaths had been recorded in the last 24 hours, but there were 14 suspected cases of cholera.
The Ministry is working hard to contain the outbreak by sharing important health information with local communities and distributing Personal Protective Equipment (PPE), such as gloves, masks, and protective clothing, particularly to those caring for the sick and Village Health Workers during burials.
Surveillance efforts are continuing in Kariba’s Ward 2, which includes the fishing camp, and awareness campaigns are underway to educate the public about cholera prevention.
The Ministry is also inspecting water points in Nyamhunga village, including the health facility borehole, which serves the local community. Water samples have been taken for testing, and results are pending.

Cholera Outbreak Hits Kariba

The Zambezi River Authority (ZRA) has directed Zimbabwe and Zambia’s power utilities, ZESA Holdings, and ZESCO Limited to maintain average power production at 214MW until the end of March 2024.
ZRA reduced the water allocation for power generation to the two power utilities by 47%, from 30 billion cubic metres (BCM) in 2023 to 16 BCM in 2024.
In a statement, ZRA said a hydrological review in the coming weeks could result in an increment, reduction or the keeping of the prevailing 8 BCM allocation. ZRA said:

Given that the outcome of the rainfall forecast is generally below normal, the Authority has maintained the 16 BCM water allocation over the first quarter of 2024, providing for a combined annual average power production of 428MW, shared equally.
Based on the water allocation of 8BCM per power utility, translating to an average power production of 214MW per Utility to the end of March 2024 when the 1st Quarter 2024 hydrological review falls due as per the standing operational framework for Kariba dam reservoir operations.
The hydrological review will among other factors considering the actual performance of the 2023/2024 rainfall season and the resulting inflows into the lake over the first quarter of the year 2024.
The results of the hydrological simulations could result in an increment, reduction or the keeping of the prevailing 2024 water allocation as is.

ZRA also said to date, the Kariba Catchment has recorded below-normal rainfall due to the persisting effects of El Niño weather conditions.
It warned that there is a possibility that Kariba inflows this rainy season will be one of the lowest on record
ZRA urged the power utilities to adhere strictly to their respective water allocation thresholds to sustain generation to the end of the year.
The Zimbabwe Power Company (ZPC) has been generating between 500 MW and 650 MW at Kariba Hydro over the past few weeks, but this Thursday, 07 March, generation had been reduced to a paltry 300 MW.
This week, most parts of the country have been spending up to 15 hours without electricity after weeks of relatively constant power supply.
Zimbabwe’s power demand stands at 2 100MW, yet today, ZPC was generating 684 MW from Hwange, and 300 MW from Kariba, with IPPs producing 28 MW to give a total of 1 012 MW.

Kariba Power Generation Slashed To 214 MW

An employee of Mukuru, a prominent financial services platform, has disappeared along with an amount of US$15,181. The employee, Blessed Chanetsa (23), went missing on January 4, 2024, with the money intended for distribution to clients in Kariba. In a statement seen by Pindula News, the Zimbabwe Republic Police (ZRP) urged anyone with information on his whereabouts to report to the nearest police station. Read the statement:

The ZRP is looking for a Mukuru employee, Blessed Chanetsa (23) who went missing with US$15 181 meant for disbursement to clients in Kariba on 01/01/24. 
</blockquote>
This is not the first occurrence of such an incident involving Mukuru. In 2022, another employee allegedly vanished after US$11,652 went missing from the company’s outlet at Murambinda Growth Point. The situation came to light when a regional supervisor, Samuel Panganai (31), detected an irregularity and instructed the accused, Jairos Tapota, to address it on October 14, 2022.
However, Tapota failed to report for duty on October 19, prompting the regional supervisor to inform the regional manager, Rodney Rondodzai. Rondodzai then instructed a forensic audit by Fawcett, who discovered that US$8,152 was missing, and an additional US$3,500 could not be located in the safe. As a result, a police report was filed at Murambinda police station to investigate the incident.

Mukuru Employee Disappears With Over US$15,000

The Meteorological Services Department (MSD) and the Civil Protection Department in Zimbabwe have announced that there will be significant rainfall in certain parts of the country this week. According to the weather report issued on Tuesday, the rest of the country will be partly cloudy and warm, with the Zambezi valley experiencing hot temperatures in the afternoon.
The MSD reported that on Tuesday, there were widespread thunderstorms across the country, with heavier rainfall in the eastern half. The highest recorded rainfall was 133mm in Harare Southerton, followed by Kwekwe and Chinhoyi with 85mm each. Other areas also experienced rainfall exceeding 30mm. These thunderstorms were accompanied by strong winds and hail in some places.
For Wednesday, it is expected that the rain system will move eastward and decrease in intensity. Significant rainfall is anticipated in Mashonaland Central, Harare metropolitan, Mashonaland East, and Manicaland provinces. The rest of the country will be partly cloudy and warm, with the Zambezi valley experiencing hot temperatures in the afternoon.
The impacts of these weather conditions include the possibility of thunderstorms with gusty winds and lightning. It is important to stay hydrated and protect oneself from the heat, especially during hot daytime conditions. Precautions such as wearing a sunhat or carrying an umbrella are recommended when outdoors. Starting veld fires should be avoided, and proper irrigation of crops and hydration of animals is advised to reduce heat stress. MSD: Significant Amounts Of Rainfall Expected In Some Parts Of Zimbabwe

The Meteorological Services Department, in collaboration with the Department of Civil Protection, has issued the <a class="MarkdownLink_linkifiedLink__KxC9G">Zimbabwe Evening Weather Report</a> and Forecast, valid until Monday, 17 July 2023 noting a continuation of the cold spell.
The Met Department said on Saturday, 15 July 2023, most parts of the country experienced cloudy, windy, and cold weather in the morning with some drizzle in Manicaland and Mashonaland East provinces. However, <a class="MarkdownLink_linkifiedLink__KxC9G">Mashonaland West</a> and western parts of Mashonaland Central had clear skies, resulting in <a class="MarkdownLink_linkifiedLink__KxC9G">moderate ground frost</a> in Henderson and slight frost in Karoi. As the day progressed, the clouds lifted and burnt off in some areas, especially in the southern provinces.
On Sunday, 16 July 2023, most parts of the country are expected to have clear skies, although patches of clouds may be seen during the day due to remnant moisture in the atmosphere. This is expected to cause nighttime temperatures to drop significantly, leading to <a class="MarkdownLink_linkifiedLink__KxC9G">severe ground frost</a> in areas such as Matopos, Nyanga, Marondera, Henderson, and Gweru, while Kadoma, Lupane, Rusape, Mukandi, Chivhu, and Harare are expected to have moderate ground frost. The severe ground frost may affect the health of vulnerable members of society and trigger respiratory-related illnesses in all persons. Plants and animals are also sensitive to overnight temperature declines.
To mitigate the effects of cold weather, people should keep warm and ensure that vulnerable members are dressed appropriately. If there is a need to use a brazier or fire to keep warm, the room should be well-ventilated. Farmers with crops vulnerable to extreme cold should consult their local Agritex Officers for better advice on frost mitigation measures. Additionally, people should monitor temperatures within <a class="MarkdownLink_linkifiedLink__KxC9G">fowl runs</a> and adjust accordingly to reduce the impacts of cold conditions on the bird population.
On Monday, 17 July 2023, a cold night and severe ground frost are expected mainly in areas such as Tsholotsho, Matopos, Henderson, Kadoma, Lupane, Gweru, Marondera, Mukandi, Chivhu, Nyanga, and Harare. However, mostly sunny conditions are expected during the day over the entire country, and temperatures should rise to the mild category.

Zimbabwe Weather: MSD Forecasts Continuation Of Cold Spell

ZESA Holdings is managing its water allocation from the Zambezi River Authority (ZRA) for power generation at Kariba South Bank Hydro Power Plant to ensure that it does not exhaust its share prematurely.
This was said by ZESA consultant (international business) Cletus Nyachowe during <a href="https://www.sundaymail.co.zw/hwange-units-1-6-refurb-begins">an interview</a> with State media. He said:

The Zambezi River Authority, which manages water in Kariba Dam and allocates a certain amount of water to ZPC and ZESCO of Zambia for power generation, has given us the latitude to vary our power output from Kariba on condition that our overall water condition is maintained within its set limits.
Another point you may want to note is that when you see us generating between 800MW and 892MW at Kariba, that power output is probably on for an hour or less.
During the day, it is regulated up and down as and when required. So, normally that maximum output is only generated during peak demand periods.
We are operating Kariba very carefully and within our water limits.
</blockquote>
In January this year, ZRA announced plans to review the Tripartite Water Purchase Agreement to stiffen penalties against the over-utilisation of Lake Kariba and Zambezi River water.
ZRA Chief Executive, Munyaradzi Munodawafa said the Council of Ministers Resolution needed to be fully implemented to effectively regulate the utilisation of water.
He made the remarks during his visit to the Kariba Dam Rehabilitation Project site.
In November 2022, ZRA which runs the Kariba Dam <a href="https://zero.pindula.co.zw/severe-load-shedding-looms-as-zra-tells-zesa-to-shut-down-kariba-power-station/">ordered ZPC to cut electricity generation by half owing to low water levels.</a>
ZRA which is jointly owned by Zimbabwe and Zambia told ZPC that the dam “no longer has any usable water to continue undertaking power generation operations.”
The directive saw ZESA Holdings implementing a tough load-shedding regime that saw consumers being plunged into darkness for at least 20 hours per day.

Zambezi River Authority Set Limits On Water Usage At Lake Kariba

Zimbabwe's Meteorological Services Issues Weather Report And Forecast For May 28-30

The government of Zimbabwe and Zambia have directed the Zambezi River Authority (ZRA) to mediate in negotiations for a clear borderline between the two countries on Lake Kariba’s waters.
The <a href="https://www.theindependent.co.zw/local-news/article/200010155/zra-to-mediate-in-zim-zambia-border-impasse">Zimbabwe Independent</a> reported that the boundary between Zimbabwe and Zambia on the 300-kilometer-long Lake Kariba is not clearly demarcated in many places.
Lake Kariba was built during the federation era when modern Zimbabwe, Zambia, and Malawi were treated by colonialists as one entity.
Since the official dissolution of the federation on 31 December 1963, there has been no clear boundary on Lake Kariba between Zimbabwe and Zambia, formerly Southern Rhodesia and Northern Rhodesia, respectively.
As a result, fishermen and other citizens have been arrested for the alleged transgression by both sides.
Heavy penalties have also been given to fishermen, most of whom would be working without the intention to illegally cross the border.
Last week, during a tour of the Zambezi Basin, officials confirmed that ZRA would mediate talks over the Lake Kariba border issue.
Speaking during the Nile Basin Initiative (NBI) experiential tour of Lake Kariba in Siavonga, Zambia, ZRA chief executive officer Munyaradzi Munodawafa, said:

In some of our activities, ZRA has been asked by authorities in Zimbabwe and Zambia to assist in identifying borderlines between the two countries.
We are working with the two countries’ surveyors’ general offices in re-affirming the borders along Lake Kariba so that they resolve disputes associated with each other’s citizens who are arrested along the dam.

Zimbabwe’s surveyor general Edwin Guvaza said the two countries have agreed to physically mark the boundary along Lake Kariba to make the boundary more clear. Guvaza said:

The working relationship between the two sister countries is cordial as far as the reaffirmation exercise of the common boundary is concerned and the medium filum of the Zambezi River is the boundary between the two countries, except along segments where we do have islands featuring along the river, especially around the Victoria Falls segment and along Lake Kariba.
In that regard, we have agreed with our counterparts to physically mark the boundary along Lake Kariba to make the boundary conspicuous, by establishing floating buoys fixed along the boundary. This will enhance fishing activities along the Lake in both countries, to guide fishermen as they carry out their activities on the lake.
As it stands, it is difficult for the fishermen to identify where the boundary is, hence territorial encroachments are bound to happen.

Kariba Dam was built between 1955 and 1959, with later work adding turbine rooms to generate electricity.

Zimbabwe, Zambia Appoint Mediator To Resolve Border Impasse

The fishing camps dotted around Lake Kariba and have become hotspots for fish for sex which involves sex workers trading sex for fish.
This was said by National Aids Council (NAC) chief executive Bernard Madzima on Monday.
<a href="https://www.newsday.co.zw/local-news/article/200010025/kariba-fishermen-in-sex-for-fish-trade">NewsDay</a> reported Madzima as saying the sex for fish trade was hampering efforts to reduce the prevalence of HIV and AIDS in Zimbabwe.
Madzima noted that prostitution in fishing camps was leading to a new wave of HIV infections as well as sexually-transmitted infections. He said:

In Kariba, fisheries have been identified as hotspots where there is rampant trade of fish for sex.
There is a new phenomenon where sex workers now cohabit with male fishermen in exchange for fish.
As an organisation, we have trained 10 female peer sex workers and 10 male peer fishermen to conduct HIV and AIDS peer education and condom distribution in Kariba where this issue is rampant.

Some of the fishing camps affected by the sex-for-fish practice include Gatshe Gatshe, Ndomo, Musamba, Muchenga in Kariba and Kalulwe, Simatelele and Chibuyu in Binga.
Last year, Zimbabwe became the first African country to approve injectable pre-exposure prophylaxis (PrEP) medicine to help reduce the rate of new infections.
PrEP is for people who don’t have HIV and are at risk of getting HIV from sex or injection drug use.
According to CDC, injectable PrEP with CAB is highly effective at protecting patients from HIV and is for adults and adolescents who weigh at least 35 kg and are at risk of getting HIV through sex.
The US Embassy in Zimbabwe said that in 2020, 1.23 million adults in Zimbabwe were living with HIV. This constituted 12.9 percent of the adult population.

Lake Kariba A Hotspot For Fish For Sex Trade - NAC

ZESA Holdings subsidiary, Zimbabwe Electricity Transmission and Distribution Company (ZETDC), says it is generating 951 megawatts (MW) of electricity against a national peak demand of 2 200MW.
The power shortage has resulted in the country experiencing electricity blackouts of up to 18 hours per day in some areas.
Despite the successful synchronisation of Hwange Unit 7 into the national grid, ZETDC call centre supervisor Milton Zata said they were still facing challenges. <a href="https://www.newsday.co.zw/local-news/article/200009437/zesa-only-generating-951mw">NewsDay</a> quotes Zata as saying:

Unfortunately, we have national grid challenges, resulting in these long outages.
</blockquote>
This comes amid reports that traditional power suppliers – South Africa and Mozambique – recently stopped exporting electricity to Zimbabwe due to arrears.
The blackouts are seriously affecting businesses and industries countrywide.
With Hwange Unit 7 appearing to struggle to feed the envisaged 300MW into the national grid following its upgrade, the power crisis is set to persist as Hwange’s Unit 8 is only expected to go live in October with another 300MW.

ZESA Generating 951 MW Of Electricity Against Demand Of 2 200MW

The <a href="https://www.pindula.co.zw/ZESA">Zimbabwe Electricity Supply Authority (ZESA)</a> has announced that the country’s power outages could ease from March 20 when Unit 7 at the coal-fired Hwange power station will be added to the national grid.
 ZESA spokesman, <a href="https://www.pindula.co.zw/George_Manyaya">George Manyaya</a>, said Hwange Unit 7 is set to begin a “synchronization process” on Monday during which it will feed power to the national grid. Testing could last up to six weeks.
Unit 8, which is also close to completion and is expected to deliver another 300 MW, is set to come on stream in April. <a href="https://www.zimlive.com/zesa-sees-power-crisis-easing-from-march-20-as-hwange-unit-7-fires-up/">ZimLive</a> cites George Manyaya as saying:

On Friday, 17 March 2023, Zimbabwe was generating 315 MW at Hwange, 241 MW at Kariba and 11 MW at the coal-powered Harare Power Station for a total of 567 MW before imports and power from independent producers.
The new unit of the Hwange power plant will lift Zimbabwe’s installed capacity to 2 400 MW, although the country continues to generate far less.
The government says the country’s peak electricity demand is 1,700 MW.
Zimbabweans are currently enduring power cuts lasting up to 18 hours due to restricted generation at Kariba hydropower station, constant breakdowns of Hwange’s ageing generators and ZESA’s inability to pay for electricity imports.

MSD Update On Tropical Cyclone Freddy

President Emmerson Mnangagwa could force the <a href="https://www.pindula.co.zw/National_Social_Security_Authority">National Social Security Authority (NSSA)</a> to reverse a US$400 000 house purchase deal in Quinnington, Borrowdale, Harare, involving Public Service minister <a href="https://www.pindula.co.zw/Paul_Mavima">Paul Mavima</a>. 
NSSA acting general manager, Charles Shava, was summoned to Mnangagwa and Vice President Chiwenga’s offices last week Monday to explain what was happening. 
Shava was asked to write a report on the purchase of the house which NSSA eventually sold to Mavima. That was before he was arrested later in the week — on Thursday — on allegations of fraud. 
The NewsHawks was told by anonymous sources in the Office of the President and Cabinet that Shava could be forced to reverse the deal. The source was quoted as saying:

The issue is now being handled by Chief Secretary in the Office of the President and Cabinet, Misheck Sibanda. There is mounting pressure for urgent action to be taken. Shava might be brought to book or forced to reverse the deal, which is likely.
</blockquote>
These events were before Shava was arrested on allegations of fraud involving US$12.2 million. His arrest for allegedly giving doctors allowances without board approval was seen as a fightback by the minister.
Shava was picked up by the Zimbabwe Anti-Corruption Commission a day before a disciplinary hearing for NSSA director Brian Mrewa. 
Mrewa, NSSA’s suspended director for investments and properties, helped Mavima in his Borrowdale house deal. He was the one who facilitated everything on that. 
Through his legal advisers, Shava has described the allegations as baseless and unfounded. However, his accusers say he has to clear his name before the courts if he is innocent as he pleads. 
<h2><a href="https://zero.pindula.co.zw/minister-mavima-causes-nssa-to-buy-himself-borrowdale-house/">The Borrowdale House saga:</a></h2>
<blockquote>
i). It is alleged that NSSA bought Borrowdale house secretly on behalf of Mavima.
ii). Due process and board approvals to buy the Quinnington house, Stand No. 218 Lot A1, were not followed.
iii). The property was valued at US$350 000, but US$400 000 was paid by NSSA, creating room for US$50 000 to go into private pockets. The transaction was executed on 3 October 2022.
iv). The house was not transferred to NSSA books before it was sold to Mavima. 
v). The house was registered under a special purpose vehicle, Angvo Investments (Pvt) Ltd and the deeds were under CABS custodial services, not CBZ Custodial Services who are the custodians of NSSA assets bought through asset management firms.
vi). <a href="https://zero.pindula.co.zw/minister-mavima-causes-nssa-to-buy-himself-borrowdale-house/">Minister Mavima allegedly initiated the deal</a> as he identified the property which belonged to one Seremane and asked NSSA to buy and keep it for him while he awaited the disbursement of his US$500 000 housing allowance given to each cabinet minister by the government.
vii). The issue came to light when Shava directed NSSA deputy director (audit) Andrew Nyakonda on 16 February to conduct an investigation into the disposal of the Borrowdale house and the purchase of Kariba Lodge, Stand No. 989 Kariba Township, for US$244 000.
</blockquote>
<h2>Kariba commercial property:</h2>
<blockquote>
a). The commercial property was bought for US$215 000 after negotiations, but US$244 000 was paid. 
b). When other costs were added, the price went up to US$252 631.59. 
c). Since NSSA usually pays round figures, US$300 000 was paid. The balance was purportedly directed to its investment account held at the asset management firm which facilitated the deal.

ED Could Force NSSA To Reverse House Deal For Minister Mavima

ZESA Holdings and its Zambian sister power utility, the Zambia Electricity Supply Commission ZESCO, will be allocated more water by the Zambezi River Authority (ZRA) to increase their electricity generation next month.
For now, ZESA and ZESCO will maintain the combined average generation output at the Kariba hydro-power plant at 500MW.
This was said by ZRA chief executive officer Munyaradzi Munodawafa after Zambian Ministers and senior Government officials toured part of the Kariba complex on Wednesday, 11 January. Said Munodawafa:

The two utilities (ZESCO Limited and ZPC) will maintain combined average generation output at Kariba at 500MW, that is, 250MW ZESCO and 250MW ZPC to the end of January 2023 after which they could increase to 400MW per power station as the flows of the mainstream Zambezi River further increase during both the months of February and March and into the second quarter of the year 2023.
</blockquote>
Munodawafa said the over-utilisation of water by utilities and poor performance of Kariba’s lower catchment rivers led to low water levels being recorded during the last quarter of the year 2022.
He said as of 11 January, the Kariba Lake level was at 475.78 (0.28m above the Minimum Operating Level-MOL of 475.5m). Added Munodawafa:

Flows in the mainstream Zambezi River are expected to continue increasing going into February 2023.
Lake levels increasing and are projected to significantly increase by April 2023 in line with peak flows of mainstream Zambezi River.
The upper catchment of the Zambezi River is recording increased water levels.

ZRA is a joint venture corporation owned by the governments of Zimbabwe and Zambia responsible for the management of the Zambezi River waters and the Kariba Dam complex.
The Kariba Dam complex comprises the dam wall and water storage reservoir and other associated ancillary facilities such as lake levels and river in-flows monitoring equipment.

ZRA To Release More Water For Kariba Power Generation

Zambia will start load shedding from 15 December in response to a huge drop in water levels in Lake Kariba, which supply water for power generation.
Peter Kapala, Zambia’s energy minister, on Friday, told Parliament that water in the lake has dropped to 4.1 percent of usable storage for the Kariba North Bank Power Station in Zambia and the Kariba South Bank on the Zimbabwean side of the lake. He said:

The low water level situation in Lake Kariba threatens the power generation from both the Kariba North Bank Hydropower station and Kariba South Bank Hydropower station.
… We anticipate that this will translate into a load management regime starting on the 15th of December, 2022 of up to six hours daily.
</blockquote>
Zimbabwe and Zambia jointly own the Kariba Dam and it is the main source of electricity generation for both countries.
To avoid a complete shutdown of the two power stations, the Zambezi River Authority (ZRA) has told Zimbabwe to cut generation to a maximum of 300 megawatts and Zambia to a maximum of 800 megawatts, said Kapala.
The Kariba North Bank Power Station in Zambia has an installed capacity of 1080 megawatts while the Kariba South Bank Power station in Zimbabwe has a capacity of 1050 megawatts.

Zambia To Commence Electricity Load Shedding On 15 December

A Kariba woman was attacked by an elephant while fetching water from an outside tap early this morning. She managed to escape.
Miss Angela Kamberembere was filling up containers with water at Number 1158, Nyamhunga 2 Township, near Nyanhewe Primary School when she suddenly saw the elephant, <a href="https://www.herald.co.zw/kariba-resident-survives-elephant-attack/">The Herald</a> reported.
The elephant attempted to grab her with the trunk and she fell to the ground. Miss Kamberembere narrated:

The moment the elephant charged to attack me further, its right leg got stuck in a dish.
This must have distracted it allowing me to recover before I started crawling away after gaining composure.
</blockquote>
Some residents who spoke to The Herald blamed perennial water were exposing them to danger as they are forced to fetch water from tapes between midnight and 0400 hours. Mrs Albertina Botai said:

Kariba Municipality is letting residents down. Instead of sleeping, we are busy filling up containers with water, exposing us to dangers with wild animals.
We heard Angela screaming and we rushed to make noise which must have distracted the elephant. She is lucky to be alive.

Mrs Svinurai Vhareni said the elephant now frequents the area where it drinks water stored in dishes and other containers.
The residents said water problems started in 2018 when Kariba Municipality connected additional institutional water users.
Human-Wildlife Conflict is a serious issue in Zimbabwe.

Kariba Woman Survives Elephant Attack

CCC leader Nelson Chamisa wants the United Nations (UN), the African Union (AU) and SADC to supervise Zimbabwe’s next elections scheduled to be held in 2023 to avoid the possibility of a contested outcome.
Addressing a “Thank You” rally at Nyamhunga Stadium in Kariba on Sunday, Chamisa also urged his supporters to vote in large numbers to make vote rigging difficult. He said:

We expect reforms to be done before elections, but even if they refuse, go in numbers and vote to make rigging impossible.
I am talking to the UN, SADC [Southern African Development Community] and AU [African Union] because the UN should be there, polling agents at every polling station and all eyes should be on the election.
The results should be traceable from the polling station to the national command centre and even the installation of the winner must be transparent.
Presidential election results should also be announced from the polling station and not take days before they are announced to avoid manipulation.
We do not want a situation where presidential results are kept a secret. Presidential results should not take five to six days like what is happening at the moment.
Results must be displayed at polling stations just like council and parliamentary results.

Chamisa also criticised the manner in which Zimbabwe Electoral Commission (ZEC) commissioners are appointed saying the process is open to manipulation. He said:

We are looking into the ZEC issue because Mnangagwa is staffing it with his colleagues’ relatives for fear of losing the elections, but we do not care even if he becomes the chairperson of ZEC.
We want to win this election, we want to change Zimbabwe, we want to win big as long as you vote in numbers.

Zimbabwe has had a history of contested elections since the formation of the MDC in 1999.
In the last election, Chamisa refused to concede defeat to President Emmerson Mnangagwa, whom he accused of stealing victory in connivance with ZEC.
Meanwhile, on Saturday, 27 August, the ZANU PF candidate Spencer Tshuma won the Gokwe-Kabuyuni constituency seat after polling 10 727 votes against CCC candidate Costin Muguti who garnered 4 800 votes.

Chamisa Wants UN, AU And SADC To Supervise Zimbabwe's Elections

The Zimbabwe Republic Police (ZRP) has ordered CCC supporters to desist from toyi-toying in any procession, on foot or using motor vehicles during a “thank you” rally to be held in Kariba to celebrate the party’s victory in the recently-held Ward 5 by-election.
The rally will be held on 28 August 2022 at Nyamhunga Stadium in the resort town.
Interim CCC Mashonaland West spokesperson, Blessing Mandava told NewZimbabwe.com that party leader Nelson Chamisa will address the rally. Said Mandava:

We are happy to have been given the green light by the police to hold our celebratory rally, which will be graced by our change champion in chief, Advocate Nelson Chamisa.

A clearance letter from Officer Commanding Kariba police district, a Chief Superintendent A. Sibanda, addressed to interim CCC Kariba district chairman, George Masendu, reads in part:

Please note that your application was approved. You are required to abide by your agenda of the day.
You are to hold the said rally at Nyamhunga Stadium on the said date and times, that is 28 August 2022 from 0900hours to 1600hours.
No procession is allowed either by foot or by vehicles since it also needs a separate notification which also attracts its own demands.

CCC was also ordered to abide by the law in curbing the spread of COVID-19, which includes wearing face masks in public.
The party’s candidate, Tonderai Chikwati polled 303 votes against ZANU PF’s Kudakwashe Mafusire, who garnered 175 ballots in the Kariba Ward 5 by-election.
CCC holds eight out of nine council wards in Kariba Urban, with ZANU PF having only one.

Police Ban CCC Supporters From "Toyi-toying" At Kariba "Thank You" Rally

The fatal accident that occurred in Kariba last week on Independence Day exposed the sorry state of Zimbabwe’s healthcare sector.
Four people died in the accident and 32 were injured while travelling from Kasvisva rural where they had attended the district Independence Day celebrations.
A speeding Zimbabwe Electricity Transmission and Distribution Company (ZETDC) UD truck which was ferrying the people veered off the road and plunged into a ravine 20km from Kariba town.
The victims suffered broken arms, legs and multiple fractures. Two of the deceased died on the spot.
The injured were transferred from Kariba Hospital to Chinhoyi, nearly 260km away, because the local hospital did not have simple basics such as bandages. Former Kariba mayor George Masendu said:

The hospital had no bandages and relatives had to buy from private pharmacies. Kariba Hospital has no X-ray machine and patients had to be ferried to Chinhoyi and nine ambulances were deployed to help out.
As much as the health staff is committed, there are no adequate resources and as a nation, this is a sad reality 42 years after independence.
</blockquote>
One of the victims of the accident who died on the spot was the Musambakaruma nurse-in-charge Thomas Munenga.
Munenga had spent 20 years as a nurse around Kariba’s rural and urban clinics.
Kariba-based journalist John Chirinda revealed that the majority of the injured were civil servants who had travelled to Kasvisva.
Kasvisva is a remote area located near Siakobvu where Munenga spent most of his time on national duty as a nurse. Wrote Chirinda:

Members of the ruling party and some civil servants were involved in the accident. The devil was waiting to inflict pain, horror and this unforgettable experience.
Munenga worked in most of the clinics in the Kariba district including Nyamhunga, Makande, Mola, Kasvisva, Siakobvu Hospital and was now at Msampakaruma Clinic before he passed on.
A good number of civil servants have shunned our rural Kariba for a better-developed place.

ZANU PF youths, Isaya Chikunichiwa Tsuro and Method Chikova were buried in Kariba last Friday.
Farisai Chingwaru was buried on Saturday in Hurungwe with Mashonaland West Minister of State for Provincial Affairs and Devolution Mary Mliswa-Chikoka and Local Government and Public Works Deputy Minister Marian Chombo in attendance.
Munenga was laid to rest in his rural home in Hurungwe’s Chief Mola area.

Kariba Independence Day Accident Exposes Poor State Of Hospitals

The Kariba South Power Station will resume operating at full capacity this week, with the rehabilitation work on the Kariba Dam plunge pool set to be completed on Tuesday.
The Zimbabwe Power Company (ZPC) had to shut down Units 5 and 6 which generate a combined 250MW and this resulted in increased load shedding across the country.
Energy and Power Development Minister Zhemu Soda on Saturday told The Sunday Mail that when the two units are back online, electricity problems and load shedding will ease. Said Soda:

I think you are aware that ZRA had requested that we shut down Units 5 and 6 at Kariba saying they are discharging a current which was making it difficult for those working underwater to put cement.
Now that they have announced that we can resume operations at the units, it is a major milestone to curtail power shortages.
The two units have a capacity of 125MW each and the addition of 250MW will go a long way in easing the power shortages.

In a statement, ZRA chief executive officer Munyaradzi Munodawafa confirmed that the rehabilitation of the dam wall will be completed on 25 January. He said:

During the last quarter of 2021, the authority requested Zesco Limited and Zimbabwe Power Company (ZPC) to reduce power generation levels for six hours only, on a few selected dates to facilitate cofferdam construction works under the plunge pool reshaping sub-project of the Kariba Dam Rehabilitation Project (KDRP).
In doing so, the utilities were expected to implement measures that would mitigate the resulting reduction in power generation levels at Kariba.
The specific works under the pool reshaping sub-project that called for this need have since advanced and are due to be completed by January 25, 2022, thereby ending the authority’s request to the two power generation utilities.
Going forward, the remaining works of the KDRP will not result in the two utilities seeing reduced generation levels at their respective Kariba power stations.

Electricity Shortages To Ease This Week - Soda

One person died in Kariba on Monday when a truck was swept while attempting to cross a flooded river. The Zimbabwe Republic Police (ZRP) has urged motorists to desist from attempting to cross flooded rivers. Said police in a statement:

Motorists are urged not to cross flooded rivers or water points. On 17/01/2022, one person died when a Nissan Atlas 3 Tonne truck with one passenger on board, travelling along Gatche-Gatche – Kariba Road was swept by water currents at Nyaodza Bridge while crossing the flooded river. The passenger escaped through the passenger window for safety.

Last year, <a href="https://news.pindula.co.zw/2021/01/29/nissan-truck-swept-in-mtshabezi-river/">two men spent the night perched on top of trees</a> in the Mtshabezi River after their Nissan Truck was swept away as they attempted to cross the flooded river.
The incident occurred at around 1 AM in the Siyoka area some 100km west of Beitbridge town. Two years ago, a Trip Trans Bus was swept away while trying to cross a flooded bridge. 
This signifies that motorists have often been attempting to cross flooded rivers thereby putting many lives in danger.

One Person Dies As Truck Is Swept Away While Crossing Flooded River

The Zambezi River Authority (ZRA) has increased the volume of water allocated for power generation operations at Kariba Dam for 2021 by three billion cubic meters (3 BCM).
This comes after ZRA granted an additional 12 billion cubic meters (12BCM) of water to Zambia’s ZESCO Limited (ZESCO) and ZESA Holdings’ power generating subsidiary, the Zimbabwe Power Company (ZPC). Said ZRA chief executive officer Munyaradzi Munodawafa:

Consequently, the 2021 allocation increased from the initial combined allocation of 30BCM granted at the commencement of 2021 to 42 BCM.
As a result of this decision, the two utilities have effectively been allocated a combined total of 45 BCM of water for 2021, with each utility expected to utilise a total of 22.5BCM for its respective power generation operations at Kariba for the year. 
The Authority’s decision to further increase the 2021 water allocation is premised on the provisions of the Zambezi River Authority (ZRA) Acts which provide for the regulation of the Kariba Reservoir in liaison with the two power generation utilities.
The provisions of the ZRA Acts have subsequently been operationalised under a tripartite Water Purchase Agreement (WPA) signed between the two utilities and the Authority. 
The WPA made provision for quarterly reviews of the hydrological outlook at Kariba to inform on the continued availability of water and the need, if any, for adjustments in the amount allocated for power generation at Kariba.
The quarterly reviews may result in a downward or upward adjustment in the allocation made to Kariba North and South Bank Power Stations for their respective generation operations.

Munodawafa added that the 3BCM increase in water allocation was informed by hydrological simulations carried out by the Authority that considered the obtaining stored usable water and power generation levels at the two Kariba Power Stations.
He said the Normal to Above Normal Rainfall projections made by the respective Meteorological Departments of Zambia and Zimbabwe for the 2021/2022 rainfall season have also been considered in coming up with the decision to increase water allocation for power generation.
Munodawafa said ZRA will continue to closely monitor the hydrological outlook at Kariba and make necessary adjustments, where necessary, to ensure the sustainable operation of the Kariba Reservoir going into the year 2022.

ZRA Increases Water Allocation For Power Generation At Kariba

The Zimbabwe Electricity Supply Authority (ZESA) has served at least 18 families in Kariba with eviction notices to vacate the houses belonging to the parastatal that they are living in.
The families were given three months’ notice due to end on 30 September 2021.
The ultimatum to leave the properties has thrown most families, including those headed by pensioners, in a fix as they do not have alternative accommodation.
ZESA subsidiary, the Zimbabwe Power Company (ZPC) terminated the lease agreements with the beneficiaries of the houses owing to an accommodation crisis it is facing. Reads one of the eviction notices:

Please be advised that the station is currently facing accommodation challenges.
We have, therefore, resolved to repossess house number H28B Fort Jameson by 30 September 2021.
</blockquote>
Efforts by NewZimbabwe.com to get a comment from ZESA proved fruitless by the time of publishing.
However, those facing eviction accused the parastatal management of inhumane treatment of former employees and tenants.
Residents association chairperson, Samu Mawawo further accused the ZPC management of violating basic human rights relating to shelter. Said Mawawo:

They are breaking human rights law against their pensioners and long-serving tenants to whom the ZPC has been leasing these properties.
In Kariba Town, it is a known fact that accommodation is a problem, and issuing someone with an eviction notice is a nightmarish experience for the recipient.
