A man from Karoi was sentenced to four months in prison by the Karoi Magistrates’ Court for shoplifting two packets of sweets valued at US$7.
The court established that on June 26, 2024, at around 6 PM, the accused, Praise Kagande, entered the Harare Inn Wholesale shop under the pretence of making a purchase.
However, Kagande then unlawfully took 2 packets of sweets valued at US$7 and concealed them in his bag.
Unbeknownst to Kagande, his actions were captured on the shop’s CCTV surveillance system.
The security staff was alerted, and upon searching Kagande as he was exiting the premises, the stolen sweets were discovered. He was immediately arrested for the theft.
The court sentenced him to 4 months imprisonment, with 2 months of the sentence suspended for 5 years. 
The remaining 2 months were also suspended, on the condition that Kagande performs 70 hours of community service.

Karoi Man Sentenced To 4 Months For Shoplifting Sweets Worth US$7

A Karoi couple was convicted by the Karoi Magistrates’ Court on charges of defeating or obstructing the course of justice after helping a suspect evade arrest by the police.
It is alleged that on 01 December 2023, at around 11 AM, Sylvester Tendaupenyu (46) and Edinah Mudekwa (44) came face to face with two police officers tasked to apprehend Talent Sezere who was wanted for failing to pay maintenance.
The two police officers proceeded to the accused persons’ place of residence where they found Talent, the accused persons’ son.
The police officers identified themselves to Talent and informed him that he was under arrest for failing to pay maintenance.
However, Talent tried to run away and was pursued by one of the police officers who apprehended him.
Tendaupenyu and Mudekwa demanded the release of their son and when the police refused to let him go, they became violent and began chanting “hapana kwamunoenda naye mwana iyeye hamumusungi”.
It is further alleged that the policemen were distracted by the commotion and Talent managed to escape.
Tendaupenyu and Mudekwa were summoned to the Police station where they were arrested and charged with obstructing the course of justice.
They were ordered to pay a fine of US$200 each or face 2 months imprisonment.

Karoi Couple Convicted For Aiding Son Escape Arrest

Police have confirmed the death of three men in a fire incident in Karoi on 24 February.
The three men, who were all aged 30, were trapped in a house that was engulfed in a fireball after fuel that was being illegally stored in a room caught fire and exploded in the Chikangwe high-density suburb.
National police spokesperson Assistant Commissioner Paul Nyathi identified the deceased as Clifford Mwanza (30), Takudzwa Muromba (30), and Sibangani Macheza (30). He said:

The Zimbabwe Republic Police confirms the death of three people in a fire incident which occurred at a house in Chikangwe, Karoi on 24th February 2024 after the room in which the victims used to stock fuel for illegal resale exploded.
The victims were identified by their next of kin as listed:-

<li>Takudzwa Muromba (30), a male adult of Chikangwe, Karoi</li>

The Zimbabwe Republic Police warns the public, motorists and illegal fuel dealers against storing fuel in their homes or public places as this is in breach of the country’s laws on public safety and environmental regulations.

According to reports, Zanga died on Sunday while Mwanza and Macheza later passed away at Sally Mugabe Central Hospital in Harare.

Police Confirm The Death Of 3 Fuel Dealers In A Fire Incident

A 13-year-old juvenile from Karoi told the police that he wanted to see if the gun his 10-year-old friend gave him could kill someone as the reason he shot dead his 15-year-old friend.
Police said that it was alleged that the 15-year-old had been struck in the eye by an unknown object which exploded after he threw it in the fire.
However, after an investigation, police said they established that the victim died after being shot by a 0.32 Revolver Taurus pistol in the head.
In a post on X (formerly Twitter), police said the incident occurred on 11 November at a house in Chiedza Suburb, Karoi. Read the statement:

Police in Karoi are investigating a case of murder which occurred on 11/11/23 at a house in the Chiedza suburb. The case was initially reported to the police as a sudden death incident in which a male juvenile (15) died after being hit in the eye with an unknown object.
The object had allegedly exploded after it was thrown into the fire by the victim. Investigations by the Police revealed that the victim was shot by another male juvenile (13) on the head with a 0.32 Revolver Taurus pistol.
The suspect confessed to the Police that he wanted to find out if the firearm killed him. The suspect was given the pistol by his friend, a male juvenile (10). The pistol belongs to Takudzwa Saini (18) who is the suspect’s friend’s elder brother (18).

13-year-old Shoots Friend (15) Dead, Claims He Wanted To See If A Gun Kills

Three robbery suspects, including an ex-offender who was released from prison last year, have been arrested, according to the Zimbabwe Republic Police (ZRP).
According to a police statement obtained by Pindula News, the suspects were detained after allegedly robbing a shop at the Mudzimu Business Centre in Hurungwe of six cell phones and US$35. Reads the statement:

The ZRP confirms the arrest of Martin Jameson (44) alias Mathew Chimukonde, Anymore Dumbura (42) and Mayor Dzorani (40), in connection with a case of armed robbery which occurred at a shop at Mudzimu Business Centre, Hurungwe, where six cellphones and US$35 cash were stolen.

 The arrest led to the recovery of a 0.22 revolver with 24 rounds, a pair of scissors, a car jack, a wheel spanner, and a hammer.
According to police investigations, Martin Jameson was previously arrested and is set to appear before the courts for robberies, thefts, and unlawful access into buildings that happened in Karoi. He has been out on free remand.
The investigations also noted that Mayor Dzorani was released from prison in November 2022 after being found guilty of an unlawful entry into buildings case.

Ex-convict Arrested After Another Robbery Involving US$35

Five men teamed up to fatally assault a 16-year-old man accused of stealing a cellphone in Karoi last month, police have said.
The victim was attacked on 15 October and died on 1 November at Karoi District Hospital.
In a statement on Wednesday, the Zimbabwe Republic Police (ZRP) said they have arrested three of the suspects while the other two are still at large. Police said:

Police in Karoi arrested Cephas Banda, Ian Murehwa and Langton Mapfura (21) in connection with a case of murder in which a 16-year-old juvenile was attacked on October 15, 2022, near Tambawadya Primary School, Chikangwe, after being accused of stealing a cellphone.
The victim died on November 1, 2022, on admission at Karoi District Hospital. The other two unknown suspects are on the run. Investigations are underway.

16-year-old Man Killed Over Cellphone

The Zimbabwe Republic Police (ZRP) on Sunday arrested a foreign national at Victoria Falls International Airport for possession of cocaine.
A police report seen by Pindula News says the foreign national, Onuoha Desmond Onyii (46), was found in possession of approximately 1kg of cocaine stashed in the linings of hats and jackets.
Police did not reveal the nationality of Onyii.
In a different case, ZRP Marimba has arrested a 27-year-old woman, Rachel Gomba, in connection with the murder of Paddy Mangisa Mlambo, her husband also urged 27.
It is alleged that Gomba stabbed Mlambo with a kitchen knife once on the thigh in Marimba, Harare, on the 24th of October 2022 at around 0600 hours. A police report seen by Pindula News read:

The couple had a fight after the husband, who had been away for three days, failed to give a satisfactory answer.

Meanwhile, ZRP Karoi is investigating a case of baby dumping which occurred at a dump site near Chiedza Primary school.
Police said a 2-day-old baby was found wrapped in a white towel at the dump site. 
The baby, a boy, has since been referred to Karoi Hospital for further management.

Foreign National Arrested At Victoria Falls Airport Over Possession Of Cocaine

The Zimbabwe Republic Police (ZRP) has announced the arrest of 11 robbery suspects linked to a spate of robbery and unlawful entry into premises and theft cases committed in and around Karoi. In a statement seen by Pindula News, police national spokesperson, Assistant Commissioner Paul Nyathi said the crimes were committed between April 2021 and September 2022. Reads the statement:

The Zimbabwe Republic Police confirms the arrest of Gift Asafu (29), Goodness Gandiwa (36), Kudakwashe Kapesa (24), Taurai Musindo (23), Tapera Zimbapeni (22), Onias Matangi (47), Evans Milanzi (24), Jimmy Dzokamushure (49), Addition Chagadama (22), Jeremy Nyakujara (27), and Nicholas Samuel (22) in connection with a spate of robbery and unlawful entry into premises and theft cases committed in and around Karoi between April 2021 and September 2022.
On 7th September 2022, Police acted on a tip-off and tracked one of the suspects, Gift Asafu, who was linked to several cases of robbery in Karoi. Police interviewed the suspect who implicated 11 other suspects, including Charles Phiri, who is still at large.
The suspects are now linked to nine robbery cases and one unlawful entry into premises and theft case. Some of the cases include a robbery case which occurred at Energy Park service station, Karoi, on 28th December 2021 at around 2100 hours where they robbed the service station manager of US$51 000-00 and a VW Golf vehicle at gunpoint and another robbery case where they attacked three security guards who were on duty at Brockerly Farm, Karoi, before stealing various agricultural inputs and 17,5 tonnes of soya beans all valued at US$80 000, among others.

ZRP Arrests 11 Robbery Suspects Linked To Robberies Involving US$121 000

A 53-year-old Karoi woman has taken her neighbour to the police after assaulting her in a dispute over cattle that had trespassed and destroyed the woman’s maize.
Pindula News understands this was not the first time the cattle trespassed, prompting the woman, Sipiwe Kasora, to confront her neighbour.
Upon arrival, Kasora met Denford Nyadzo who is a member of the family that owns the cattle and confronted him asking him to keep their cattle. 
Denford, who is about 23 years, allegedly told her that he was on duty to herd the cattle adding that his elder brother was the one supposed to be herding on that particular day. 
Kasora’s son, Hardnocks Usayiwevhu, says the response infuriated his mom who reminded Denford that he was part of the family and that she did not care about who was on duty to herd the cattle or not.
Denford reportedly responded by saying Kasora was a madwoman. The verbal warfare is said to have continued and Denford then assaulted her leaving her with a sore head. 
Kasora, who once suffered a stress-related illness a decade ago, is now complaining about a headache. 
The matter was reported to the Village head and to the police leading to Denford’s arrest on Friday.
The incident was confirmed by the village head, Nelson Chamunyonga who said Kasora was seriously assaulted. Said the village head:

Nyadzo family’s cattle have for a long period of time now been plundering Usayiwevhu’s crops. Kasora is the one who has been chasing them away. The matter was even reported to us. So on this eventful day, she drove the cattle to Nyadzo’s family and Denford assaulted her badly. The matter is now in the hands of the police. I will summon them after the case has been finalised. As neighbours, we should do better.

Pindula News got in touch with the accused, Denford who also confirmed the incident. He told this reporter:

It’s true that my cow destroyed her crops in their field located near a grazing area. I don’t deny it, it’s an offence. So she brought the cow fuming over the matter. She said she wanted to take my cattle and deliberately drive them into my fields in retaliation but I said she can’t do that. I urged her to report the matter to the village head or tell me a fine she wanted but she refused. This would not be the first time for her to do so because in the past my cattle also destroyed her crops and she drove them into my fields. I resisted and she grabbed me and started assaulting me. I grabbed her and we both fell to the ground resulting in her sustaining injuries. She then reported me to the police for assaulting her.

A 53-year-old Woman Assaulted After Confronting Neighbour Over Trespassing Cattle

Karoi residents last week lodged a complaint with the local authority over the use of metal spikes by municipal police to stop errant motorists.
This comes after Edith Mugangaza (29), of Jingison Farm, was injured on Wednesday in an accident when municipal police threw metal spikes towards a fleeing vehicle she was travelling in.
Mugangaza was ferried to Karoi District Hospital for treatment and was said to be in a serious condition.
The petition to Karoi Municipality by Zimbabwe National Organization of Associations and Residents Trust (ZNOART) read in part:
<blockquote>
ZNOART reiterates that traffic police must use safer modern policing tools and approaches in order to make roads safer for all pedestrians, motorists, shoppers, schoolchildren, tourists and Karoi residents at large.
Similarly, motorists must operate within the by-laws of each town, municipality or city because it takes two to tango.
</blockquote>
The council confirmed the accident and said it was carrying out investigations to establish what really transpired. It said in a statement:

Council is giving the matter the most serious attention it deserves and a thorough investigation is underway to establish the details of the incident.
Council would like to assure its valued stakeholders, motorists and residents that it values the sanctity of life and the smooth motoring in and around the town.

Last year, High Court judge Justice Owen Tagu dismissed an application by the Passengers Association of Zimbabwe (PAZ), together with private taxi “Mushikashika” driver Bernard Murizani seeking a ban on the use of spikes and tear gas by the police.
Justice Tagu said that banning the use of spikes by traffic police to stop vehicles refusing to obey orders to stop would be as good as legalising crime and disempowering police from maintaining law and order.

The Zimbabwe Republic Police (ZRP) is investigating an armed robbery that occurred in Karoi in which four armed robbers pounced on a Service Station and got away with over US$51 000.
Police said the robbery happened on Sunday morning. Pindula News presents a police statement on the case:

Armed Robbers Pounce On Service Station And Get Away With Over US$51K

Eight Karoi Town Council officials, including the chairperson, five councillors and two employees, have been arrested for corruptly allocating themselves properties.
They allegedly allocated themselves residential and commercial stands without following procedures and awarded each other unapproved travelling and subsistence (T&amp;S) allowances.
Town secretary, Wellington Mutikani, on suspension over other allegations, was back in court facing four counts of corruptly allocating himself four residential stands.
He is also accused of awarding himself a tender between 2015 and 2021. 
Council chairperson, councillor Abel Matsika, is also facing allegations of unlawfully allocating himself a residential stand. 
Five other Karoi councillors, Stewart Jena, Nicholas Murwira, Rangarirai Hungwe, Thomas Mbiri and Kenson Kamuponda were also arrested by the Zimbabwe Anti-Corruption Commission (ZAAC) on allegations of awarding themselves unapproved T&amp;S allowances.
The other accused, Hastings Makunda, an administration officer, also faces allegations of unlawfully allocating himself a residential stand.
All the accused appeared at Karoi Magistrates Court Thursday and Friday and were released on bail with varying conditions each.

8 Karoi Council Officials Arrested For Corruptly Allocating Themselves Properties

Scores of hungry villagers in Karoi descended on a Lobels delivery truck that had been involved in an accident and helped themselves to free loaves of bread on Wednesday morning.
The Lobels vehicle collided with a haulage truck at Buffalo Downs, a few kilometres outside Karoi at around 6 AM. Three Lobels employees died on the spot.
While it is taboo to rob the dead, villagers apparently could not resist the temptation to do some “free shopping” from the bread delivery truck.
Mashonaland West provincial police spokesperson, Inspector Margaret Chitove confirmed the accident to NewZimbabwe.com but could not provide details on the circumstances leading to the collision. She said:
<blockquote>Indeed, the accident occurred this Wednesday morning near Karoi but at present, we don’t have further information as investigations are still underway. We will revert to you as soon as we finish the compilation of the information.</blockquote>
Reports suggest that the haulage truck which was coming from Zambia tried to overtake another vehicle before colliding with the bread delivery truck that was headed towards Karoi.
Police and fire tender from Karoi attended the scene and retrieved the trapped bodies of the deceased.
The bodies were taken to the Karoi Hospital mortuary. The driver of the haulage truck was said to have also been taken to Karoi Hospital where he is in stable condition. Police said via a post on Twitter on Tuesday evening:
<blockquote>The ZRP confirms a [road traffic accident] which occurred today at 184 km peg along Harare-Chirundu Road where a foreign registered truck was involved in a head-on collision with a bakery truck. As a result of the accident, 3 people died on the spot. More details to follow.</blockquote>

Villagers Loot Bread From Lobels Truck Accident Scene

The Zimbabwe Lawyers for Human Rights (ZLHR) said Harare lawyer and opposition politician, Tendai Biti was arrested by police in Karoi early on Saturday and later released without a charge.
Biti, a former Finance Minister and critic of President Emmerson Mnangagwa’s government also received deaths threats after a heated telephone conversation with a person identifying himself as Gakanjwe. <a href="https://twitter.com/ZLHRLawyers/status/1352996432840679424" rel="noopener noreferrer" target="_blank">ZLHR posted on Twitter:</a>
<blockquote>At about 09:25 hours today, we received a distress call from [Tendai Biti] advising us that he had been arrested by police in Karoi. He was not informed of any charge. He was eventually released without any charges against him.
[Biti] has since advised us that he has been receiving death threats. This follows a heated telephone conversation with a person identifying himself as Gakanjwe quizzing [Biti about] tweeting on [government’s] failure to deal with COVID-19.</blockquote>

Our member lawyer [Biti] has been subjected to harassment, ill-treatment, prosecution and persecution in recent months.

Biti Receives Death Threats After Brief Arrest In Karoi

Zimbabwe Examination Council (ZIMSEC) last week paid some invigilators who are invigilating ongoing end of year exams with plates of sadza, Newsday reports.
The payment of their services with Sadza and not cash has resulted in some invigilators snubbing the process and some withdrawing their services according to the publication.
A teacher who spoke to the publication said some teachers in Karoi withdrew their services for fear of contracting COVID-19 and some Primary school headteachers were called to invigilate the exams and were paid by plates of Sadza and not cash after the invigilations:
<blockquote>The team of invigilators that were roped in from primary schools was offered a plate of sadza as payment for the task of invigilating the ‘O’ Level examinations. Zimsec has not bothered to pay us for invigilating duties.</blockquote>
Another teacher from Karoi also said:
<blockquote>While we are not being paid for our invigilating services and are incapacitated, we are also being exposed to COVID-19 and are being tormented by law enforcement agents that are demanding letters to allow us to proceed to schools. We do not have those letters. We have now decided to boycott going to schools to invigilate examinations,</blockquote>
When contacted for comment. PTUZ’s Raymond Majongwe said such reports of the ill-treatment of teachers by ZIMSEC are downgrading teachers’ roles.

The late MDC Alliance (MDC-A) councillor, Lavenda Chiwaya, who died in Karoi between the 20th and 21st of August 2020 will be buried this Thursday.
The MDC-A said Chiwaya had been stalked by suspected State agents for some days before the fateful night and believe that he was strangled to death and his body dumped a few houses from his home.
However, the Zimbabwe Republic Police (ZRP) disputed the MDC-A version, saying Chiwaya could have died as a resulting of consuming an illicit drug, “kranco”.

Karoi ZRP has come under fire after they reportedly revealed the identity of Whistleblowers who had reported returnees who evaded mandatory COVID-19 quarantine, Newsday reports.
This was after a female returnee slipped into the country from South Africa and vigilant community members notified the police of the lady and her crime.
The returnee who spend the night at Karoi ZRP holding cells before healthy officials took her to Vuti Quarantine Center wrote a WhatsApp message in a Karoi residents group.
Labelling the whistleblower baboons, the woman wrote the messages seen by the publication and said:
<blockquote>Karoi baboons sold me out. Someone reported me to the police after my arrival from South Africa on Friday. Taking a taxi to the police station to ensure I get quarantined as if that would bring food to their table. The officers mocked the individual and said the person is overzealous.</blockquote>
However, one of the group members put her in her place and said:
<blockquote>With all due respect, we must not blame whoever took that decision to go to police as she (returnee) is coming from South Africa, a COVID-19 red zone and anyone coming through proper channels is going under quarantine. We must not take poison to protect our relatives or friends. She deserves to go for quarantine so that we are all safe</blockquote>
A medical expert also echoed the other group  members’ sentiments and said whistleblowers must be protected by the law:
<blockquote>Legally, it is unlawful to shelter someone who has slipped quarantine, who has contravened the law</blockquote>
ZRP Mashonaland West said they were not investigating the matter.

Karoi ZRP Reveals The Identity Of Whistleblowers Who Helped Them Arrest A Quarantine Violator

Norton Member of Parliament <a href="https://www.pindula.co.zw/Temba_Mliswa" rel="noopener noreferrer" target="_blank">Temba Mliswa</a> (Independent) on Tuesday filed an urgent chamber application at the <a href="https://www.pindula.co.zw/High_Court_of_Zimbabwe" rel="noopener noreferrer" target="_blank">High Court</a> against members of the <a href="https://www.pindula.co.zw/Zimbabwe_National_Liberation_War_Veterans_Association" rel="noopener noreferrer" target="_blank">Zimbabwe National Liberation War Veterans Association</a> who allegedly evicted his employees from the Karoi Country Club.
Mliswa wants the war veterans to vacate the recreational area, as they are now jeorpadising the livelihoods of his workers. Mliswa’s lawyers said in the summons:
<blockquote>This is an urgent chamber application for an order against the respondents who without the consent of the applicant forcibly took over the premises of Karoi Country Club on November 29, 2019.
They indicated that the war veterans’ association had been given a permit by Karoi Town Council to use the country club for youth projects but no proof of such authority was exhibited to any of the country club’s employees who were present.</blockquote>
Joseph Serima Manjengwe, Alick Chingodza, Life Magedi and Bridget Chingodza are cited as the respondents.
Mliswa has been running the Country Club since 2003.

War Veterans Push Mliswa Out Of Karoi Country Club

OK Zimbabwe is set to open a branch in Karoi after a ground-breaking ceremony was recently held at the Anglican Church stand in the town where a deal was signed between the church and retailer. Karoi Town Council  facilitated the deal.
Anglican Church Harare Diocese Bishop Chad Nicholas Gandiya, who officiated at the function, thanked Karoi Town Council for pushing development in the area. OK Zimbabwe technical manager Engineer Philip Karidza told the gathering that his organisation was going to employ locals and empower the Karoi community and the shop would be opened before next year’s OK Grand Challenge.

OK To Open New Branch In Karoi

On Tuesday, Karoi residents and riot police were involved in running battles after residents protested the death of a woman who had been run over by a vehicle that was evading municipal officers with spikes.
Eye witnesses interviewed by Daily News said that the taxi which was evading municipal police officers with spikes crushed into pedestrians and killed one on the spot. Karoi police had to fire shots to disperse the angry residents who were stoning a car that the municipal police were using to flee from the scene.

Karoi residents in violent protest after woman gets killed by vehicle evading municipal officers with spikes

The Zimbabwe republic police had to fire shots into the air and use tear gas to disperse an angry mob that wanted to mete out instant justice to Karoi Town Council officers. The officers are alleged to have thrown spikes at a moving vehicle which resulted in the owner hitting four people who were on the pavement. One of the four died while the other three were seriously injured.
Angry with this, residents had a go at the officers who they blamed for the incident. The residents stoned and burned a vehicle where the officers had taken refuge and were only stopped by the police from inflicting harm on the officers.
The Ministry of Home Affairs has said that it is illegal to throw spikes at a moving vehicle and urged members of the public to report such instances. The Ministry said spikes should only be used in cases of extreme criminality and even the spikes should be used as part of a barricade, not thrown.
