Tendai Biti, the vice president of Citizens Coalition for Change (CCC), accused party president Nelson Chamisa of creating fake social media accounts to attack him.
This comes after a parody account linked him to Sengezo Tshabangu, the self-proclaimed interim secretary-general. There are allegations of internal division within the opposition party, with some senior officials including Biti, Welshman Ncube, and Chalton Hwende being accused of being “sell-outs.”
Biti spoke exclusively to <a href="https://www.newsday.co.zw/local-news/article/200020183/biti-in-rare-chamisa-attack">NewsDay</a> after a post by a parody account in Sengezo Tshabangu’s name claimed that he and Tshabangu had met to discuss important matters concerning the party. The former Finance Minister is quoted as saying:

I’m not interested. That account must be parody account that was created by Chamisa and his team. Just check it. I have not met Tshabangu and let me repeat that I am not interested.
</blockquote>
Biti also told <a href="https://x.com/NewsHawksLive/status/1729125438457307172?s=20">The NewsHawks</a> that he hasn’t met Tshabangu in a long time and has not had a meal at Monomotapa Hotel in 20 years. Said Biti:

That’s false and malicious. I haven’t seen Tshabangu for a long time and haven’t eaten at Crowne Plaza for 20 years now!
</blockquote>
Biti reiterated that he has nothing to do with the issue of recalls which have resulted in the expulsion of scores of CCC elected representatives in parliament and municipalities.
The tweet by the parody account claimed that Tshabangu had met Biti at a top hotel in Harare. The account claimed:

Just after my interview on ZBC, I had dinner with one of our decorated change champions and learned man Hon Biti at Crowne Plaza, as he is a victim of dictatorship, we deliberated on pertinent issues that will add value to our struggle for democracy, transparency and constitutionalism.
</blockquote>
Tshabangu’s spokesperson Khaliphani Phugeni also disowned the account saying it was fake. Phugeni said:

I would think it’s a fake account.
</blockquote>
The recent development occurred when Harare councillor Denford Ngadziore prevented former mayor Jacob Mafume from attending a councillors’ caucus meeting at the Town House. This happened before the election of Lovejoy Chitengu as mayor, following the recall of Ian Makone by Sengezo Tshabangu.
Mafume who is considered Biti’s ally is reportedly concerned for his safety after receiving threats. He stated that he did nothing wrong and expressed regret over the events that took place during the caucus meetings. Mafume added:

We are ready for service delivery of the residents and council if asked to do so. So, my conscience is clear even during the period when l was mayor.
I wronged no one except those who want to take Harare. What happened at caucus meeting stays at the caucus meeting.
</blockquote>
According to reports, Eric Murai, the provincial taskforce chairperson for Harare, and Matsunga Machuma forced their way into the chambers to ensure that councillors voted as directed by Nelson Chamisa. Murai and Machuma allegedly asked the councillors to show their ballots before casting their votes. When asked for comment, Denford Ngadziore could not confirm or deny the scuffle that took place. He spoke to NewsDay:

Chitengu stated that he cannot comment on the matter at this time.
The divisions within the party became apparent just before the August 2023 elections when there were accusations that Chamisa was imposing candidates in certain areas. These divisions became more noticeable after the elections when Sengezo Tshabangu began recalling CCC Parliamentarians and councillors whom he believed were imposed on the voters and were no longer party members. Some party leaders, including Chamisa, suspect that Tshabangu is not acting alone, leading to speculation that Biti may be involved due to his opposition to Chamisa’s strategies.

Biti Accuses Chamisa Of Creating A Parody Account To Attack Him

Suspended MDC-T spokesperson Khaliphani Phugeni may have another day in court after the family of a minor he allegedly raped announced that it will appeal his acquittal at the High Court.
Phugeni was acquitted at the Western Commonage Court in Bulawayo by magistrate Sibongile Msipa-Marondeze on Monday.
On Tuesday, Phugeni celebrated his acquittal for rape charges saying he is a good man and the charges were fabricated. He said:
<blockquote>The charges were fabricated, and that is what the magistrate said. It’s a great day for the Judiciary.
As a country, we must hang our heads in shame for allowing a good man to be charged based on false claims, with clear impunity and without any shred of evidence provided.
This was meant to tarnish my image, vandalise my political career beyond resuscitation but the people of Zimbabwe kept coming to my inbox to tell me how much they loved me.
There are rapists out there going for our children, and I hope that no child will be disbelieved when they report a genuine rape because of this sham accusation.</blockquote>
The mother of the alleged victim told NewsDay that the family met and resolved to appeal at the ruling at High Court.
She said she holds no beef against Phugeni, who she said has been a family friend for years.
She added that people are trivialising rape by claiming that the family wants to tarnish Phugeni’s political image.

Rape Victim Family To Challenge Phugeni's Acquittal

MDC-T acting national spokesperson Khaliphani Phugeni, who doubles as interim party president Thokozani Khupe’s press secretary, has been acquitted of a rape charge.
Phugeni (44) appeared before Western Commonage regional magistrate Sibongile Marondedze who absolved him saying the case lacked compelling evidence.
Prosecutors said Phugeni unlawfully had sexual intercourse with a minor, who could not be named for ethical reasons, during the period extending from June to November 2018, at Emhlangeni and in Magwegwe West, Bulawayo.
Phugeni denied the charge, saying the accusations were politically-motivated and meant to “politically soil” his image after he was nominated for Senate.
In an interview after the acquittal of Phugeni, the minor’s mother said the acquittal pained her. She said:
<blockquote>It’s very painful. Words alone cannot explain my hurt, anger and disappointment.
That was an unfair judgment. How can somebody rape a 14-year-old child and say it was consensual?
I will not rest till I find justice for my daughter.
People cannot abuse their positions of authority to violate our kids and women in general.</blockquote>
However, Phugeni’s lawyer Kholwani Ngwenya said the evidence by the complainant and her mother was unreliable and it was discredited. He said:
<blockquote>The evidence by the complainant and her mother was manifestly unreliable as it was discredited and could not prove a prima facie offence on a charge of rape that the accused person was facing.
He was thus found not guilty and acquitted.</blockquote>

Khaliphani Phugeni Acquitted Of Rape Charge

MDC-T leader Thokozani Khupe’s press secretary, Khaliphani Phugeni, who also doubles as the party’s acting spokesperson, has appeared in court facing a rape charge.
Phugeni (44) appeared before Western Commonage regional magistrate Sibongile Marondedze last week to face charges of contravening section 65 of the Criminal Law, Codification and Reform) Act (Chapter 9:23).
Phugeni denied the charge.
Magistrate Morondedze remanded him out of custody to November 13 for the continuation of trial.
The State alleges that Phugeni unlawfully had sexual intercourse with a woman who could not be named for ethical reasons without her consent.
The offence was allegedly committed during the period extending from June to November 2018, at Emhlangeni and in Magwegwe West, Bulawayo.
The victim later made a report to the police leading to Phugeni’s arrest.

Khupe Spokesperson Faces Rape Charge

MDC-T leader Thokozani Khupe’s spokesperson, Khalipani Phugeni said the party is a Tsvangirai family project and having members of the family in the structures is not a way of trying to gain public sympathy.
In an interview on Tuesday Talk, Phugeni said the fact the party is named after Tsvangirai is proof that the party belongs to the Tsvangirai family. Said Phugeni:
<blockquote>We are not trying to rope in the Tsvangirai family, this is their project, the party is called Movement for Democratic Change Tsvangirai, so this is their thing.
It is their project, and we are not trying to act in any fun way or whatsoever, it is their project, the headquarters is named after their father, brother or son so there is nothing amiss here.</blockquote>
Phugeni said there was nothing wrong with Khupe putting her name on the list of the party’s proportional representative nominees forwarded to electoral officials.
He said it was the party’s desire to have its president in Parliament leading the caucus.
The MDC-T has been accused of trying to use the late Morgan Tsvangirai’s family to appear like the genuine party since the party’s founding president died in 2018.
The MDC-T has roped in Vincent Tsvangirai, Morgan’s son, and Manase Tsvangirai, Morgan’s young brother, in its structures.
Earlier this year, the entire MDC-T leadership performed some rituals at Tsvangirai’s grave and promised to take care of his mother.

Khupe's Spokesperson Says MDC-T Is A Tsvangirai Family 'Thing'

MDC youths reportedly assaulted Khupe’s aide and some party workers on Monday at the party’s headquarters in Harare, the Daily News reports. The assault on Monday reportedly came a few hours after another group of Mwonzora’s affiliates assaulted a team of cleaners who were cleaning Khupe’s office.
<div>According to the publication, the youths in question are harassing some of the officials suspected to be backing some other candidates in the party’s presidential race. Sources that spoke to the publication about the incidences said:</div>

Opposition MDC-T led by Thokozani Khupe has suggested that the 31 July protest that was called by Jacob Ngarivhume, leader of the opposition Transform Zimbabwe was a strategy by rival MDC Alliance to disrupt its court-sanctioned extraordinary congress.
Addressing reporters on Sunday at the Morgan Tsvangirai House, formerly known as Harvest House, MDC-T acting spokesperson Khalipani Phugeni suggested that party rivals had double motives. He said:
<blockquote>We are worried and suspicious because we have intelligence that there are credible attempts to disrupt our extra-ordinary congress and we found it to be very suspicious that after we announce our date and then there is this demonstration.</blockquote>

The congress had been sanctioned by the Supreme Court in a ruling on the MDC leadership crisis so that the party would select a successor to the founding leader, the late Morgan Tsvangirai.
Last Sunday, MDC Alliance leader, Nelson Chamisa, however, denied organising the protest but endorsed it saying he will support any progressive force that fights for the welfare of workers, against human rights violations and bad governance.

MDC Alliance leader Nelson Chamisa and MDC-T acting president Thokozani Khupe are reportedly keen on reuniting the party ahead of the party’s planned extra-ordinary congress.
Speaking on Saturday to the Daily News on Sunday, Khupe’s spokesperson Khaliphani Phugeni said unity between Khupe and Chamisa would “revive our party to a level where it can be able to achieve what it was formed for”. He said:
<blockquote>What I know is that when Chamisa’s mother died, his people called Khupe to inform her as well as to confirm if she would be coming.
After that, Khupe called Chamisa who appreciated the gesture. While I am not aware of the unity talks, would it be a bad idea if they worked together?
Isn’t it that the unity will revive the party and enable it to achieve the goals for which it was formed? All opposition parties should work together.</blockquote>
Meanwhile, Chamisa’s spokesperson Nkululeko Sibanda told the Daily News on Sunday that he needed to consult his boss first before he could comment on the matter.
Khupe was almost beaten up by Chamisa’s supporters when she went to the Chamisa homestead in Gutu to pay her last respects following the death of Gogo Chamisa.

Chamisa, Khupe Revive Unity Talks - REPORT

The opposition Movement for Democratic Change Tsvangirai (MDC-T) which is currently being led by Thokozani Khupe has announced that the extraordinary congress to elect a successor to the late founding party leader, Morgan Tsvangirai will be held in September.
The party had initially set July 31st as the day for the Congress which had been directed by the 30 March Supreme Court ruling on the party’s leadership crisis but postponed the congress citing the outbreak of the coronavirus pandemic.
The new dates were announced by the party’s deputy national spokesperson Khaliphani Phugeni who said:
<blockquote>You will be happy to know that we have come up with a date for our extraordinary congress . . . the date is from the 4th to the 6th of September.
There are a few things I want you to note about this is that the extraordinary congress is falling within the period given by the Supreme Court. After the Supreme Court judgment, the Chief Justice issued a practice directive which suspended implementation of the judgement for about six weeks.</blockquote>
He added that the dates will still be within the three months directed by the court since counting started after the six weeks.
The judgment directed Khupe to convene an extraordinary congress within three months after the ruling, failure for any reason, party interim chairman Morgen Komichi would be required to call the extraordinary congress within four months of the judgment.

The leader of the breakaway MDC-T party, Thokozani Khupe has attacked her former colleague Nelson Chamisa saying that he is not fit to talk about the issue of legitimacy. Khupe said that Chamisa should not challenge President Emmerson Mnangagwa’s legitimacy as he is also an illegitimate leader. Speaking through, her spokesperson Khaliphani Phugeni, Khupe said
<blockquote>When he cries of putting the country back to legitimacy and the respect to the Constitution, he is talking nonsense because he could not respect his own internal constitution of the party.
He is not a legitimate leader, so he can’t go and challenge the legitimacy of Mnangagwa yet he himself is fully aware that he is a constitutional delinquent. The young man seems to live in his own parallel world. He doesn’t appreciate that he needs to hold himself to a higher or at least the same standard as he expects of others.
Juxtapose his claim to the presidency of the MDC claim to the constitutional imperatives of the MDC and you’ll begin to realise a delusional young man obsessed with power and fame.</blockquote>
