Presidential spokesperson George Charamba has claimed that President Emmerson Mnangagwa saved the new British monarch, King Charles III’s life, from Rhodesians who wanted to kill him during the colonial era.
Posting on Twitter using one of his accounts, Tinoedza Zvimwe, Charamba claimed Mnangagwa was invited to Charles III’s coronation on 06 May 2023 after he saved the latter from assassination by Rhodesians. <a href="https://twitter.com/Tinoedzazvimwe1/status/1657253313618780160?s=20">He wrote:</a>

Charles, now King Charles III, would have been killed by Rhodesians, except for a tip-off from a Rhodesian intelligence officer to the current President, then as state security minister.
That all explains why ED had to be at King Charles’ coronation, and why relations with the UK are fated for a reset under President ED! Enjoy!

Meanwhile, some social media users mocked Mnangagwa saying he was snubbed during King Charles III’s coronation in London on Saturday.
However, ZANU PF spokesperson Chris Mutsvangwa said that Mnangagwa was not part of the heads of State and government who had a photo opportunity with King Charles III because Zimbabwe is not a Commonwealth member.
Speaking on the sidelines of the burial of national hero Abraham Kabasa in Harare on Monday, Mutsvangwa said:

We are not a member of the Commonwealth, the President is determined that we should be readmitted into the group of nations.
</blockquote>
Mutsvangwa added that Zimbabwe does not have the right to get close and personal with the king as it is not a Commonwealth member. He said:

But as for Zimbabwe, we did not have the right because we are not yet a member of the grouping.
When we become a member, we would be part of those who will be close to the king.
We want to engage with countries that we have cordial relationships and re-engage those we have had frosty relationships with in the past.
Our President always says we are friends to all and enemies to none.
We were happy that our President was invited to King Charles III’s coronation.
When he was still a prince, he lowered the Union Jack (British flag) and raised the Zimbabwean flag after we had won the liberation struggle in 1980.
It’s a person who we like a lot and it was imperative for the President to attend.
This shows that the engagement between Harare and London is going in a good direction.

Mnangagwa Saved King Charles III’s Life, Claims George Charamba

ZANU PF spokesperson Chris Mutsvangwa said that President Emmerson Mnangagwa was not part of the heads of State and government who had a photo opportunity with King Charles III because Zimbabwe is not a Commonwealth member.
Mutsvangwa said this in response to reports Mnangagwa was snubbed during King Charles III’s coronation in London on Saturday.

Meanwhile, other African leaders who attended Charles III’s coronation had the opportunity to meet Prime Minister Rishi Sunak but Mnangagwa got to meet the United Kingdom’s Minister for Africa, Andrew Mitchell.
Mnangagwa also met Commonwealth Secretary-General Patricia Scotland who emphasised Commonwealth values in their discussion centred on re-admission.
Scotland said she was “pleased o welcome the President of Zimbabwe, Mnangagwa to Marlborough House for a courtesy call.”
She said they discussed a range of issues, including Zimbabwe’s ongoing application to rejoin the Commonwealth and reaffirmed the commitment to the values of the Commonwealth.

Mutsvangwa Explains Why ED Missed Photoshoot With King Charles III

President Emmerson Mnangagwa has described his meeting with the United Kingdom’s Minister for Africa Andrew Mitchell as an opportunity to work on the full restoration of relations between Zimbabwe and Britain.
Mnangagwa had travelled to the UK to attend the coronation of the new British monarch, King Charles III and returned home on Sunday. <a href="https://twitter.com/edmnangagwa/status/1655316583378501635">Mnangagwa tweeted</a>:

During my trip to London, I had the fantastic opportunity to sit down with the UK Minister for Africa, [ 
Rt Hon Andrew Mitchell MP].
Understanding what steps the UK thinks we must take and developing the relationship between the UK and Zimbabwe is an exciting opportunity for all of us.

However, Team Pachedu, a group of data analysts active on Twitter, derided Mnangagwa’s trip to London, calling it “a trip of shame.” <a href="https://twitter.com/PacheduZW/status/1655185758930567168">They wrote</a>:

Other African leaders had the opportunity to meet Prime Minister Rishi Sunak but Mnangagwa got to meet Mitchell.

Since Mnangagwa came to power in 2017 on the back of a military-assisted transition, a euphemism for a military coup, he has attempted to mend relations with the UK.
But despite his unexpected invitation to Charles III’s coronation, relations seem not to have thawed between Zimbabwe and its former colonial master.

Mnangagwa Hails UK "Trip Of Shame"

President Emmerson Mnangagwa has accepted the invitation to attend the coronation of the British monarch King Charles III.
Mnangagwa said he held a meeting with the United Kingdom Ambassador to Zimbabwe Melanie Robinson on Sunday where they also discussed trade and investment. He said:

I’m most excited to announce that I have accepted an invitation to the coronation of His Majesty King Charles III.
Yesterday I met with the British Ambassador, Melanie Robinson.
We also discussed trade, investment, and the special relationship between Zimbabwe and the UK.
</blockquote>
Last month Mnangagwa wrote in his weekly column in The Sunday Mail, that he was set to visit the United Kingdom in May this year to attend the coronation of the new British monarch.
He said the invitation to attend King Charles III’s coronation adds a positive chapter to bilateral relations between Zimbabwe and the United Kingdom.
Since becoming the president of Zimbabwe in 2017, Mnangagwa has been pushing what he calls the engagement and re-engagement agenda in a bid to end the country’s two-decade isolation from the international community.
Mnangagwa is also eager for Zimbabwe to rejoin the Commonwealth.
The coronation of Charles III and his wife, Camilla, as king and queen of the United is scheduled to take place on Saturday, 6 May 2023, at Westminster Abbey.
Charles acceded to the throne on 8 September 2022, upon the death of his mother, Queen Elizabeth II.
The Coronation service will begin at 11 AM at Westminster Abbey.

Mnangagwa Accepts Invitation To Attend King Charles III's Coronation

President Emmerson Mnangagwa is set to visit the United Kingdom in May this year to attend the coronation of the new British monarch King Charles III.
In his weekly column in The Sunday Mail, Mnangagwa said the invitation to attend King Charles III’s coronation adds a positive chapter to bilateral relations between Zimbabwe and the United Kingdom. He said:

In both the United States of America and the United Kingdom, re-engagement continues.
Late last year, our Minister of Foreign Affairs and International Trade (Ambassador Frederick Shava) attended the USA-Africa Summit.
This was the first-ever time such an invitation was extended to Zimbabwe.
We hope the Administration there is beginning to see that relations between us must be re-based, putting behind us the unwarranted and undeserved punitive measures which do not serve our mutual interests.
In early May, I shall be attending the coronation of King Charles III, again adding a positive chapter to our bilateral relations with the United Kingdom.
</blockquote>
He said Zimbabwe is set to open a full Embassy in Equatorial Guinea soon, while the country’s President, Teodoro Obiang Nguema Mbasogo is expected to reciprocate his counterpart’s State visit early this year.

Mnangagwa Invited To Attend King Charles III Coronation

King Charles III has been proclaimed as Britain’s new monarch in a ceremony held on Saturday at St James’s Palace in London.
King Charles became the monarch after the death of his mother, Queen Elizabeth II on Thursday, but a meeting formally confirmed it on Saturday.
The proclamation was read publicly in the other capital cities of the United Kingdom – Edinburgh in Scotland, Belfast in Northern Ireland, and Cardiff in Wales – and at other locations.
Speaking before the Accession Council, the King said his mother’s death had been an “irreparable loss”.
Below is King Charles III’s declaration to the accession council in full:

My lords, ladies, and gentlemen.
It is my most sorrowful duty to announce to you the death of my beloved mother, the Queen.
I know how deeply you, the entire nation – and I think I may say the whole world – sympathise with me in the irreparable loss we have all suffered.
It is the greatest consolation to me to know of the sympathy expressed by so many to my sister and brothers and that such overwhelming affection and support should be extended to our whole family in our loss.
To all of us as a family, as to this kingdom and the wider family of nations of which it is a part, my mother gave an example of lifelong love and of selfless service.
My mother’s reign was unequalled in its duration, its dedication and its devotion. Even as we grieve, we give thanks for this most faithful life.
I am deeply aware of this great inheritance and of the duties and heavy responsibilities of sovereignty which have now passed to me.
In taking up these responsibilities, I shall strive to follow the inspiring example I have been set in upholding constitutional government and to seek the peace, harmony and prosperity of the peoples of these islands and of the Commonwealth realms and territories throughout the world.
In this purpose, I know that I shall be upheld by the affection and loyalty of the peoples whose sovereign I have been called upon to be, and that in the discharge of these duties I will be guided by the counsel of their elected parliaments.
In all this, I am profoundly encouraged by the constant support of my beloved wife.

The Accession Council is formed of privy counsellors who have advised the monarch since the Norman era.
They now comprise about 670 senior politicians, including Prime Minister Liz Truss.
