Rest Chiduku, the son of self-appointed King Munhumutapa, born Timothy Chiminya, was arrested in Bulawayo on Thursday for allegedly posing as a government official and commissioner. He had been visiting shops and bars to check their licenses.
According to <a href="https://newsday.co.zw/southerneye/local/article/200036229/king-munhumutapas-son-arrested">Southern Eye</a>, Chiduku’s appointment had resulted in the dismissal of Mandla Nkomo, the Bulawayo commissioner, and his spokesperson, Chief Bekezela Bhekimpi Nyathi, who was let go after challenging Chiduku’s authority.
Chiduku’s arrest came after police received a tip-off about a “suspicious character” claiming to work for the government.
Images of Chiduku in handcuffs were subsequently shared on the ZANU PF Youth League’s Facebook page. Reads the post:

Beware of criminals moving around claiming to be government officials. Here is the one who claims to be a commissioner, he goes around checking licences in shops and bars.

Nkomo, a former commissioner for Chief Munhumutapa, said they worked hard to build support for the monarch. Said Nkomo:

To our surprise, King Munhumutapa imposed his son Chiduku to run the Matabeleland region, including us.
That was totally wrong because we worked very hard building this dynasty in the Matabeleland region with Nyathi, a spiritually filled person and a humble leader who is filled with respect.
When Chiminya saw that the (WhatsApp) chat group I opened had a higher number (of members) than other provinces sitting at 650, he thought he had the power to impose his son.
We tried to advise him to stop it because that was wrong and tribalistic. He was very angry with me and Nyathi to the point of firing us.
Nyathi advised King Munhumutapa not to fire me, but the king opted to send an audio endorsing Chiduku cementing that he is his biological son and people of Bulawayo and Matabeleland must listen to him nothing else.
We left Chiminya and his son Chiduku, who had been just arrested because of going around conning people and collecting moneys from shop owners and business people in Zimbabwe in the name of his father, King Munhumutapa.

Chiminya on Friday confirmed the arrest of Chiduku but said his arrest had nothing to do with him as a king. He said:

What caused his arrest has nothing to do with Munhumutapa. It’s his own issue and the law has to be applied to him. If he is guilty, he should be proven guilty by the courts.
</blockquote>
Chiminya also said that Nyathi was his spokesperson and Nkomo was the only commissioner he appointed.
He said Nkomo had appointed Chiduku as his secretary, and he simply implemented Nkomo’s decisions.
Chiminya claimed that both Nkomo and Nyathi resigned for their own reasons, which he respected, leading to Chiduku remaining in his position in Bulawayo.
The self-proclaimed Munhumutapa criticized Chiduku for allegedly acting as a government official and taking money from shops and said if Chiduku violated the law, legal consequences should follow.
Chiminya revealed that Chiduku was in the department of Forever Associate Zimbabwe (FAZ), a Central Intelligence Organisation-linked shadow group that campaigned for President Emmerson Mnangagwa ahead of the 2023 elections.

Chiduku was caught by the police after a tip-off. The king's former commissioner said they worked hard for the kingdom but Chiduku was imposed on them. The king said his son's arrest was not related to him. The king criticized his son for acting like a government official and taking money from shops illegally. Chiduku was part of a group supporting the president during the elections.

Munhumutapa's Son Arrested

Timothy Chiminya, who asserts that he is Mambo (King) Munhumutapa, has submitted a petition to Zimbabwe’s Constitutional Court requesting that the Minister of Local Government and Public Works cease the appointment of chiefs.
In a letter acknowledged by the Chief Registrar of the Constitutional Court on September 30, 2024, Chiminya is also demanding over US$69,000 from the Minister of Local Government and Public Works. He wrote:

We are aware that Judges are there to make sure laws are implemented through their judgements. I, Mambo Munhumutapa write this letter to request the following:
1. That the Minister of Local Government and Public Works be stopped from appointing and enthronement of Chiefs in Zimbabwe.
2. The writ from High Court of Zimbabwe demanding payment of USD69 600.00 from Minister of Local Government and Public Works be processed as was granted by Mrs Justice Munangati Manongwa on 30th September 2022, HC Case Number HC3981/22
3. That your office help implement the payment of outstanding wages to Mambo Munhumutapa as was spelt out in the Letter of Demand dated 19 August 2024.
4. The High Court Order of 28th September 2024 remains valid because of the bar given by the High Court on the 26th of September 2024 which will remain effective until there defendant is compliant. We understand the decision that had been made but because of the bar the PTC ‘minutes must be stopped because they are null and void.
5. Mambo Munhumutapa is willing to be assisting the His Excellency, The President Dr ED Mnangagwa on matters of appointing and enthroning Chiefs.
6. We notify the Parliament of Zimbabwe through Hon Advocate Jacob Mudenda, all senators and Chiefs to stop exercising duties and powers to do with traditional leaders of Zimbabwe.
This letter with effect from today must be treated as interdict letter and letter of execution. I do hope that your office will help implement and these requests.

He copied his letter to President Mnangagwa, the Speaker of Parliament, and Chief Justice Luke Malaba, among others.
Chiminya is currently embroiled in a legal dispute with the Ministries of Justice, Legal and Parliamentary Affairs, and Local Government, who are challenging his claim to the Munhumutapa kingship
He recently wrote to Chiefs Council President Khumalo, informing him that all traditional leaders in Zimbabwe now fall under the Munhumutapa kingship.
The historical King Munhumutapa, also known as Mwenemutapa, was a powerful ruler of the Mutapa Empire – a medieval kingdom that existed in what is now modern-day Zimbabwe and Mozambique.
The Mutapa Empire reached its peak in the 15th and 16th centuries but began to decline as the Rozvi Empire, ruled by the Changamire Dynasty, emerged in the region.

A man called Timothy Chiminya, claiming to be the king Mambo Munhumutapa, wants the Minister of Local Government to stop appointing chiefs in Zimbabwe. He also demands money and recognition as the rightful king. Chiminya is in a legal battle with the government over his kingship claim. The original King Munhumutapa was a powerful leader of the Mutapa Empire in Zimbabwe and Mozambique long ago. Chiminya says all traditional leaders in Zimbabwe should now fall under his kingship. This dispute is ongoing, and Chiminya is seeking support from top officials in the country.

"Mambo Munhumutapa" Petitions Constitutional Court To Stop Appointment Of Chiefs By Local Goverment Minister

The ruling ZANU PF party is on a collision course with traditionalists and chiefs in Matabeleland over its plans to conduct rituals at the sacred Matopos shrine.
ZANU PF has given the green light to self-proclaimed King Munhumutapa, born Timothy Chiminya, and three other chiefs to perform rituals at the Matopos and Great Zimbabwe monuments.
In a letter dated July 10, 2024, and addressed to the Parks and Wildlife Management Authority, ZANU PF requested permission for King Munhumutapa to conduct these rituals at the two sites.
However, the letter does not specify the reasons behind the party’s need to perform these ceremonies or the timeline for doing so.
The ZIMPARKS director-general, Fulton Mangwanya, subsequently granted the chiefs permission to visit the monuments for the planned rituals.
However, chiefs in Matabeleland who were interviewed by the <a href="https://newsday.co.zw/southerneye/local/article/200030166/outrage-over-matopos-rituals">Southern Eye</a> stated that they were not consulted about this plan, and they considered the proposed rituals to be taboo.
Chief Dakamela expressed that they were not informed about this issue and only learned of it through the media reports. He said:

I don’t understand whether the Parks have the authority to allow such rituals to take place without consulting the locals.
Such things need a consensus as it can be a source of conflict. So it cannot happen without consulting the chiefs.
</blockquote>
Chief Dakamela also said they do not recognise King Munhumutapa.
Chief Ndolwane also said local traditional leaders ought to have been consulted before permitting King Munhumutapa to visit the shrine. He said:
<blockquote>
And again our cultures are different. So the question to ask is; these rituals, which are going to be done in a place where his culture is different from that of locals, how is he going to conduct them?
Why not consult with us and see if this works or not?
Again there has never been one King for every tribe and culture. We don’t support it.

Chief Masuku echoed the same frustrations over the lack of consultations, adding that they don’t recognise King Munhumutapa.
Chief Tshitshi said the planned rituals are taboo and a sign of disrespect. He said:

I have never seen such and we don’t know that one can come and do as they please in one’s area. It’s actually a taboo.
We don’t welcome such because they can’t do the rituals without consulting us, the community, the people…
</blockquote>
Prominent historian Pathisa Nyathi has raised concerns about the planned rituals by self-proclaimed King Munhumutapa at the Matopos shrine, saying the move is problematic given the government’s past denials of the Ndebele people’s efforts to restore their traditional monarchy. Said Nyathi:

When we tried to install a Ndebele king, we were denied. I’m sure you remember that, the reasons were that we have a republican constitution that has no room for a monarchy.
So if we allow some people to call themselves Mambo what what, it becomes problematic.

The government has consistently rejected calls by elements within the Ndebele community to revive their traditional monarchy, arguing that such a move would be unconstitutional.
Ironically, the government has allowed the Lozwi clan to install Mike Moyo as the king of the Mambo Dynasty in 2019, as part of an initiative to restore their own kingship.
This discrepancy in the government’s approach has not gone unnoticed. The Minister of Local Government and Public Works recently dismissed Timothy Chiminya, the self-proclaimed “King Munhumutapa,” as an imposter.
Yet, Chiminya maintains that ZANU PF has acknowledged him as the rightful King Munhumutapa by permitting him to perform rituals on behalf of the ruling party.

The ruling party ZANU PF wants to do rituals at special places but the local chiefs are mad. They say they were not asked about the plan and they think it's wrong. They don't even believe in the person who wants to do the rituals. This person says the government agrees with him but the government says he's fake. The government let another group have a king, but won't let the Ndebele people have their own king. People are confused about what's fair.

ZANU PF Faces Backlash From Traditionalists Over King Munhumutapa's Matopos Rituals

Chiefs in the Matabeleland region have urged the National Chiefs Council to investigate the alleged “King Munhumutapa” seeking to conduct rituals at some of the region’s sacred spiritual sites.
The ruling ZANU PF party has written a letter to the National Museums and Monuments, requesting clearance and referral letters to allow “King Munhumutapa” and three others to perform “national rituals” at the Matopos and Great Zimbabwe monuments.
This development is concerning, as the Minister of Local Government and Public Works, Daniel Garwe, recently dismissed the claim of Timothy Chiminya Mujuru being the “King Munhumutapa,” stating that the Zimbabwean Constitution does not have a provision for such a title.
Speaking to <a href="https://cite.org.zw/chiefs-oppose-king-munhumutapas-shrine-tour/">CITE</a>, Chief Masuku of Matopo warned that if Chiminya visits the sacred site of Njelele, he should not represent himself as the king, as he will not be allowed to enter the traditional shrines. He said:
<blockquote>
The problem is I am not aware of King Munhumutapa because I don’t know any official king in our country, and when he comes to Njelele he should not come as a king because we are not going to allow him.
Anyone can go depending on a challenge they have, wanting to present it there, needing help, but when going to a place saying you are king, yet as leaders we know that we don’t have a king in our country.
There are a lot of people who call themselves king, others say they are King Mambo, King Munhumutapa, or King Khumalo, so that’s not how we work, we work according to the law.

In response to “King Munhumutapa” plans to conduct rituals at spiritual sites, Chief Mathema stressed the importance of maintaining the traditional custodianship of these sacred shrines.
He said the sacred shrines in Zimbabwe have specific families that have been entrusted with the responsibility of caring for and managing them.
These families have deep-rooted, generational connections and knowledge of the proper protocols and rituals to be performed at these sites. Said Chief Mathema:

It’s saddening to hear that some people are coming from other areas who want to do a job that is not theirs. In the first place, as chiefs, we don’t know about this journey.
Before everything else, there is a need to find out where these people are coming from and who sent them in the first place because you cannot just wake up and say you want to go to these sacred places or ancestral sites without anyone directing you. I don’t think so; these are respected houses.
</blockquote>
Chief Mathema said the National Chiefs Council should look into the matter as it is likely to cause some problems in the Matabeleland region if it is not attended to.
Chief Masuku of Gwanda said Chiefs have been told several times that the Constitution does not have a provision for a king. He said:
<blockquote>
We have been told over and over to the extent that we now understand that the Zimbabwean Constitution does not accommodate a king, so where is this one coming from and how does he work? It’s hard to understand.
The second thing, in our culture, certain people go to Njelele. I don’t even go there, so I don’t know whether he is also one of those families or has the spirit to go to Njelele.
It’s difficult to say he should not go there, maybe he is one of the people with that spirit; it’s also difficult to say he should go, maybe he is not one of them. It’s hard to talk about someone you don’t know.

Njelele is a sacred site located in Matobo Hills and is considered one of the most important spiritual and cultural sites for the Ndebele and Kalanga people.
Njelele is known as the “Rain Shrine” or “Rain Temple” and has been used for centuries by indigenous communities to perform rain-making rituals and ceremonies. It is believed to be a place of spiritual power and connection to the ancestors.
The site continues to draw pilgrims, spiritual seekers, and tourists interested in experiencing the site’s unique cultural and natural heritage.

Chiefs in Matabeleland are concerned about a man claiming to be King Munhumutapa wanting to perform rituals at sacred sites. The Minister says there's no provision for such a title in the Constitution. Chiefs warn that the man should not call himself a king when visiting the sites. They say only specific families are allowed to conduct rituals there. The National Chiefs Council needs to look into this issue to prevent problems in the region. Njelele, the sacred site, is important for Ndebele and Kalanga people for rain-making rituals.

Chiefs In Matabeleland Opposed To "King Munhumutapa" Njelele Shrine Tour

Timothy Chiminya, who refers to himself as “King Munhumutapa,” recently presided over the installation of Johnsias Mugomeri as the new Paramount Chief Goredema in Gokwe.
Despite the government dismissing Chiminya as an imposter, he has stated that nothing will deter him from overseeing the coronation of legitimate traditional chiefs across the country.
Speaking to the <a href="https://www.newsday.co.zw/southerneye/local/article/200029938/king-munhumutapa-defiant">Southern Eye</a>, Chiminya said he was “correcting” history. He said:
<blockquote>
We are correcting history and I have installed Goredema of the Varozvi Moyo clan as paramount chief in Gokwe.
</blockquote>
Chiminya also vowed to take legal action against those who “place hurdles” in his way, saying he has the authority to install traditional chiefs.
He is currently engaged in a legal dispute with the Ministries of Justice and Local Government, who are challenging his claim to the Munhumutapa throne.
Chiminya had obtained a High Court order issued by Justice Priscilla Manongwa-Munangati directing the ministry to pay him his outstanding wages and allowances as King Munhumutapa.
The ministry, however, sought a rescission of the judgment after the government labelled him an impostor.
Chiminya claimed that ZANU PF acknowledged him as King Munhumutapa by using him to perform rituals for the ruling party.
However, the Ministry of Justice said Chiminya’s claim to be King Munhumutapa is unconstitutional and a legal nullity.
The Ministry of Local Government and Public Works ministry issued a follow-up statement denouncing Chiminya as an impostor. 
In response, Chiminya is suing the Local Government and Public Works ministry for US$100,000 for defamation by calling him an impostor.
King Munhumutapa, also known as Mwenemutapa, was the ruler of the Munhumutapa Empire, a powerful kingdom that existed in what is now Zimbabwe and Mozambique during the 15th to 17th centuries.
Under his rule, the Munhumutapa Empire became a major commercial and political power in Southeast Africa, engaging in trade with the Portuguese, Swahili merchants, and other regional powers.
King Munhumutapa was known for his wealth, power and influence, and his court was described as one of the most sophisticated in medieval Africa.
The Munhumutapa Empire eventually declined in the 17th century due to internal power struggles, the growing influence of the Portuguese, and attacks from rival kingdoms.

"King Munhumutapa" Defiant, Installs A Paramount Chief In Gokwe

Timothy Chiminya, the man who claims to be King Munhumutapa, reportedly presided over the installation of Masimba Rubatika as Chief Seke last week, to replace Stanley Chimanikire.
As reported by <a href="https://newsday.co.zw/southerneye/local/article/200027531/king-munhumutapa-challenges-govt">Southern Eye</a>, Chiminya declared that nothing will stop him from overseeing the coronation of chiefs across the country despite the government dismissing him as an impostor. He said:
<blockquote>
I know some in government circles who are used to corrupt activities and bribes when it comes to the installation of chiefs would want to throw bricks in my way, but I would not be deterred.
It’s quite surprising that unscrupulous people have manipulated the issue of chieftainship for personal gain.
As King Munhumutapa I don’t impose chiefs but I sit down with the whole clan and a clear consensus is reached as those in the chieftainship family know who the next heir is.
So, in this case, it was clear that Rubatika was the next Chief Seke but for years someone (allegedly) just came and imposed a person who was not even in line for chieftainship.

He said his actions were guided by a 2022 High Court order which declared him King Munhumutapa after the then Local Government, Public Works and National Housing Minister had contested his kingship.
In the High Court case number HC 3981/22 between Chiminya and then Local Government minister Winston Chitando, it was “ordered by consent that the plaintiff Timothy Chiminya is hereby declared as Mambo Munhumutapa.”
This week, Chiminya filed another High Court application seeking further confirmation as King Munhumutapa. He said:

I won my case in the High Court and the government failed to oppose the court judgment. They never approached me but they announced that I have been disowned in the media without going to court. They are supposed to honour the court decision.
I have filed court papers for contempt of court by the government.
</blockquote>
A fortnight ago, the Ministry of Local Government and Public Works issued a statement dismissing Chiminya’s assertion that he is the new King Munhumutapa, saying the Zimbabwean Constitution does not have a provision for Kingship. The Ministry said:

The Ministry of Local Government and Public Works strongly condemns the Illegal behaviour and conduct of the fraudulent imposter, Timothy Chiminya Mujuru, and would like to advise the public to ignore him and his antics…
The public is urged to report this imposter to law enforcement agents when approached in their communities.

New "King Munhumutapa" Dares Government

The Ministry of Local Government and Public Works has refuted Timothy Chiminya Mujuru’s assertion that he is the new King Munhumutapa.
In a statement, the Ministry said that the Zimbabwean Constitution does not have a provision for Kingship, therefore Mujuru’s claim is unconstitutional and a nullity. It said:

Section 283 (a) of the Constitution of Zimbabwe Amendment (No. 20) Act of 2013 as reads with Sections 3(1) and (2) of the Traditional Leaders Act [Chapter 29:17] provides that; “the appointment, removal and suspension of Chiefs must be done by the President on the recommendation of the provincial assembly of Chiefs through the National Council of Chiefs and the Minister responsible for traditional leaders and in accordance with the prevailing traditional practices and traditions of the communities concerned.”
It is apparent that this person is not a chief either; since he was not appointed in terms of the legal provisions.
The Ministry of Local Government and Public Works strongly condemns the Illegal behaviour and conduct of the fraudulent imposter, Timothy Chiminya Mujuru, and would like to advise the public to ignore him and his antics.
In the spirit of ensuring the whole of Government approach Ministries departments and agencies are urged to liaise with the Ministry when engaging with the Traditional Leadership Institution so that the public is not misinformed.
The public is urged to report this imposter to law enforcement agents when approached in their communities.
