A reckless kombi driver who was captured on video driving on the pavement along Julius Nyerere Way, opposite OK Zimbabwe Supermarket in Harare, has been arrested.
Zimbabwe Republic Police spokesperson Commissioner Paul Nyathi confirmed on Thursday the arrest of Nikisi Kudzanai Peter (29), the driver of a Toyota Hiace Kombi. Said Nyathi:

On 18th January 2025, police in Harare set up a roadblock along Seke Road, after receiving a tip that the kombi was leaving Harare Central Business District en route to Chitungwiza.
As the driver approached the roadblock site near ABC Auctions, he attempted to flee by reversing the kombi but was blocked by oncoming vehicles. He later switched off the kombi and fled. The kombi, was subsequently impounded.

Nyathi added that the driver was arrested on 22 January 2025 after the police received information on his whereabouts.
Meanwhile, the ZRP has warned motorists against breaking road rules and endangering lives.

Kombi Driver Arrested For Driving On Harare Pavement

The Zimbabwe Republic Police (ZRP) has said the driver of a kombi, who jumped out of the vehicle causing it to crash into a tree, was being escorted to Marimba Police Station after being arrested for a road traffic offence.
In a statement issued on Friday, January 17, ZRP spokesperson Commissioner Paul Nyathi confirmed that the owner of the kombi had been identified but claimed not to know the person driving the vehicle at the time. Below is the full ZRP statement:

The Zimbabwe Republic Police has taken note of a viral social media video of a kombi registration number, ACQ 1884 being driven along Hean Road towards High Glen Road turn-off.
The kombi driver suddenly jumped off the moving kombi resulting in the vehicle crashing onto a tree with people jumping out.
The correct position is that police officers from ZRP Marimba were manning a road block when they arrested the driver for openly contravening the provision of the Road Traffic Act, Chapter 13:11. The vehicle was impounded.
A Marimba Police Station vehicle then came to pick the police officers who had completed tour of duty. The impounded kombi’s driver was then ordered to drive to Marimba Police Station with two police officers inside the kombi, escorting it. The police vehicle was following behind.
As the kombi was moving, the driver suddenly jumped out, leaving the kombi to crash onto the tree. The driver ran away from the scene.
The kombi was later taken to ZRP Marimba by police officers. Witness statements were recorded from some of the passengers, the public and the police officers.
The owner of the kombi, Loverage Chikwape (50) of number 11076 Kuwadzana Extension, Harare has been located by the Police. He claims that he does not know the person who was driving the vehicle.
The Zimbabwe Republic Police implores kombi operators and their crew to assist in the maintenance of law and order in the country.
There is no reason whatsoever for any kombi driver to be reckless and openly cause an accident while being escorted to a Police Station with police officers and passengers inside.

South Africa’s Border Management Authority (BMA) has arrested a kombi driver allegedly trying to smuggle undocumented Zimbabwean children into the country through the Beitbridge port of entry.
According to BMA spokesperson Mmemme Mogotsi, the minibus taxi driver was carrying 25 undocumented foreigners when he was intercepted on Monday.
The passengers included 20 children aged between five and 14, who were unlawfully transported under dangerous and inhuman conditions. Said Mogotsi:

The vehicle used was impounded. The driver has been charged and is in police custody and a conveyance fine of R375,000 has been issued in accordance with the Immigration Act.
Following standard protocols, the children were handed over to the Zimbabwean child welfare authorities for their safety and care while investigations continued.

BMA acting commissioner Jane Thupana stated that the operation underscores the BMA’s commitment to dismantling criminal networks that exploit vulnerable individuals, especially children. She said:

South African Kombi Driver Arrested For Smuggling Children From Zimbabwe

Police in Shurugwi are investigating a case of attempted murder that occurred on August 22, 2024, at a police checkpoint situated at the 42-kilometre mark along Gweru-Zvishavane Road.
In a statement, Police said a kombi driver, George Mandaraza (34), who was driving a Toyota Hiace commuter omnibus, intentionally rammed into a police roadblock resulting in a head-on collision with a Honda Fit vehicle.
One of the police officers manning the roadblock and the driver of the Honda Fit were both injured. The kombi driver, however, fled the scene immediately after the crash. Reads the statement:

Police in Shurugwi are investigating a case of attempted murder which occurred on 22/08/24 at a Police check point at the 42 kilometre peg along Gweru-Zvishavane Road.
George Mandaraza (34), who was driving a Toyota Hiace kombi, registration number AFE 1506 with three passengers on board was stopped at the road block where he was arrested for a traffic offence and was escorted to the nearest police station.
Along the way, the suspect made a U-turn and intentionally drove the kombi towards the roadblock where he hit the police drums.
Subsequently, the kombi veered off the road and hit street lights before being involved in a head on collision with a Honda Fit vehicle.
Resultantly, a police officer and the driver of the Honda Fit vehicle were injured. The kombi driver fled from the scene after the incident.

Police are appealing to the public to come forward with any information that could assist in locating the suspect. Witnesses are encouraged to report to the nearest police station.

A man named George drove a van into a police checkpoint on purpose, hurting some people. He ran away after the crash. The police are looking for him. Kombi Driver "Intentionally" Crashes Vehicle Into Police Roadblock

A kombi driver was recently sentenced to two years imprisonment for running over a pedestrian who later succumbed to the injuries.
As reported by <a href="https://www.newsday.co.zw/local-news/article/200026320/reckless-driver-caged-for-running-over-pedestrian">NewsDay</a>, Takudzwa Chipere (26), was convicted and sentenced by Harare provincial magistrate Ntombizodwa Sibanda for contravening the Road Traffic Act.
Chipere from Murisa village in Seke pleaded guilty to the charge. The magistrate, however, suspended six months on condition of good behaviour. Chipere will, therefore, serve an effective 18 months in prison.
He was also barred from driving for two years and his licence was cancelled.
Prosecuting, Charlotte Gomani alleged that on April 2 this year, Chipere, who was driving a Nissan caravan along Seke Road, with 14 passengers on board reversed the vehicle and knocked down Mike Moyo.
The vehicle dragged Moyo who was trapped underneath for nearly a metre before it stopped.
Moyo was ferried to Parirenyatwa Hospital for treatment but sadly succumbed to his injuries on April 6 this year.

Kombi Driver Jailed For Running Over Pedestrian

A kombi driver, Beni Beavan (28), was jailed for an effective two years and banned from driving for life after he was convicted of reckless driving and failure to acquire a re-test.
Beaven reportedly drove his Toyota Hiace on the wrong side of the road thus endangering the lives of his passengers.
Prosecutor Isheunesu Mhiti prayed the magistrate for a custodial sentence as Beavan had committed a serious offence. Mhiti argued that a noncustodial sentence will belittle the crime. He said:
<blockquote>Such offences are on the rise and the court has to send a clear message to would-be offenders. A custodial sentence will bring about sanity on our roads.</blockquote>
