Three of the four Kutama villagers who allegedly stole nearly US$1 million dollars from the late former President Robert Mugabe in Zvimba have been living in opulence since the strongman’s death, with the full knowledge, they will never account for their misdeeds now that the complainant is dead.
The suspects, Constance Mugabe (50), Saymore Nheketwa (47), Andrew Mahumbe (37) and Johannes Mapurisa were arrested for stealing US$922 000 towards the end of the late Mugabe’s long reign, court documents show. The three were Mugabe’s former employees.
However, Nhetekwa, a Mugabe relative, sadly did not enjoy the money for long as he later committed suicide after failing to live with the shame which is still a village scandal.
Mugabe had reportedly stashed the money in four briefcases with books in 2016 without his wife, Grace’s knowledge and took the money to his rural home for his village retirement.
Mugabe’s loot was unfortunately looted. Mapurisa reportedly bought a Toyota Camry and a house for $20,000 after the incident while Nhetekwa also bought a Honda and livestock which included pigs and cattle for an undisclosed amount.
According to Obey Mudimu, a poultry manager at Mugabe’s rural home, the suspects are now leading lavish lifestyles. He said:

Before his death, on 6 September 2019 Mugabe made a last stand in court from Singapore to fight his robbers to get back his money but was able to recover only US$37 000.

Kutama Villagers Feast On Mugabe's US$1 Million 'Retirement Savings'

The family of the late former President <a href="https://www.pindula.co.zw/Robert_Mugabe" rel="noopener noreferrer" target="_blank">Robert Mugabe</a> has forced some <a href="https://www.pindula.co.zw/Kutama" rel="noopener noreferrer" target="_blank">Kutama</a> villagers to relocate their cattle pens to pave way for the construction of a protective precast wall at his rural home.
Mugabe’s nephew, Dominic Matibiri, told NewsDay Weekender that the wall was meant to protect the late national hero’s remains from being tampered with by his former colleagues in ZANU PF. Said Matibiri:
<blockquote>Since we buried our father there, a precast wall is a security measure to prevent his enemies from tampering around with his remains, considering that he was no longer a Zanu PF member.</blockquote>
Mugabe died on 6 September this year in Singapore where he had been receiving treatment for cancer.
His remains were initially set to be buried at the <a href="https://news.pindula.co.zw/2019/11/24/ed-says-he-arranged-chiwengas-hospitalisation-directly-with-chinas-president-president-xi-jinping/" rel="noopener noreferrer" target="_blank">National Heroes Acre</a> where a mausoleum was set to be constructed for his burial, but his widow, Grace, demanded that the burial take place in Zvimba.

Security Around Mugabe's Grave To Be Reinforced

Nehanda Radio has said that Leo Mugabe, the late president Mugabe’s nephew has explained why his family kept very close vigil of his remains at all times during the 22 days after his death and before his burial. According to the publication, the former president feared that those who toppled him from power would use his body for rituals if they get the chance.

Mugabe Feared Those Who Ousted Him From Power May Use His Body For Rituals - Report

The family of the late former president <a href="https://www.pindula.co.zw/Robert_Mugabe">Robert Mugabe</a> has thanked President Mnangagwa for allowing them to honour the death wish of their own. The gratitude remarks came during the family spokesperson Walter Chidhakwa’s vote of thanks speech. Mr Chidhakwa said:
<blockquote>We want to thank President Mnangagwa and Government. The journey that we have travelled with the late Cde Mugabe has not been easy. It was full of pain. Amai (Mugabe) used to say she wants to take baba for medical check-ups in Singapore and we would approach President Mnangagwa. In no time he would assist us with travel arrangements before we return. But in the last visit, baba did not return as his condition deteriorated, leading to his death. The President then assisted us with transport, food and other logistics before conferring baba a national hero. We thank President Mnangagwa because since the death of baba, he said he will let the family decide on the funeral and burial arrangements. But it is not the family that decided, VaMugabe is the one who said he wanted to be buried here at his home. The former president was <a href="https://news.pindula.co.zw/2019/09/26/mugabe-to-be-buried-in-zvimba-this-weekend-report/">buried at his rural home</a> at a special site constructed in his courtyard despite the government constructing a <a href="https://news.pindula.co.zw/2019/09/17/just-in-mugabes-mausoleum-to-cost-usd1m/">mausoleum for him</a>. The burial was a private event with only <a href="https://www.pindula.co.zw/Mary_Mliswa">Mary Mliswa Chikoka</a> the only notable government official at the burial according to Sunday News.

Mugabe's Family Thank ED For Letting Them Bury Him In Kutama - Report

The church where the departed leader used to worship together with his first wife Sally and later on with Grace on Sunday prayed that he be forgiven VOA reports. The Sacred Heart Cathedral where the leader used to attend Mass worshippers remembered Mugabe’s role in the upkeep of the church.
The Priest on Sunday at Sacred Hearts Cathedral told congregants:
<blockquote>We are praying for our relatives who have died. Without forgetting to pray for our former president, Comrade Robert Mugabe, we bring him forward to God, we are asking God if there is anything that he did wrong in his life that he be forgiven.</blockquote>
Other congregants who spoke to Reuters had this to say about the Former President:
<blockquote>To me he was a father figure. We are so saddened. … He was a very staunch Catholic.
As our former president I think everyone can admit that without the work he did we would not be as independent as we are
You know when you fight, in a fight sometimes you lose your teeth, (right)? And we became poorer. But that’s a fight and he did it, and we should give him that.</blockquote>
Mugabe will be buried on Sunday 14 September. His final resting place has not yet been disclosed as family <a href="https://news.pindula.co.zw/2019/09/09/relatives-insist-mugabe-will-be-buried-in-home-village-report/">members insist that he be buried at his rural home in Kutama.</a>

3 family members of former President Robert Mugabe have told Reuters that they want Mugabe to be buried at his rural home in Zvimba instead of the National Heroes Acre. Last month it emerged that the <a href="https://news.pindula.co.zw/2019/09/06/mugabe-refused-national-heroes-acre-burial-report/">Mugabe had told relatives that he didn’t want to be buried at the Heroes Acre</a>. A family member involved in the planning of the funeral told the same publication that the family had compromised in having the by agreeing to have a state funeral led by the government on Saturday but is insisting that Mugabe would be buried at Kutama, his place of birth.
One relative who refused to be named who spoke to Reuters said:
<blockquote>The family has made a decision that Mudhara will be buried at Kutama – that is the position – but the government is still engaging the family to try to have him buried at (National) Heroes Acre.
What is clear is that there is no agreement on the place of burial. Even the government statement does not address that issue. It is not settled</blockquote>
The government has however<a href="https://news.pindula.co.zw/2019/09/08/full-text-mugabe-funeral-govt-advises-diplomatic-missions-of-arrangements/"> circulated a Memo that says Mugabe’s funeral will be held on Saturday at the National Sports stadium.</a> It doesn’t specify where he will be buried.
