Kwekwe City Council has introduced a road levy as it seeks to repair the city’s poor road network.
As reported by the <a href="https://www.chronicle.co.zw/kwekwe-introduces-road-levy/">Chronicle</a>, during a recent full council meeting, the councillors passed a resolution to introduce the road levy starting with the business and companies sector.
Although details of how the levy will be deducted and the percentage thereof, the council said it will be effective by the end of the month.
The chairperson of the works committee, Councillor Pikurai Msipa said their department was underfunded. He said:
<blockquote>
We do not have enough equipment and resources for us to be able to repair our roads. The roads are in a bad state but we cannot repair them.
We don’t have a grader, the one we have is very old and is often broken down.
</blockquote>
The road levy we receive is insignificant so a road levy would go a long way in assisting us.
Various local authorities are coming up with various unpopular strategies to raise revenue to replenish their empty coffers.
For instance, the City of Gweru has introduced overnight clamping where motorists found wrongly parked are made to pay US$85.

Kwekwe City Council Introduces Road Levy

Kwekwe City Council is set to demolish a block of houses in Mbizo 7’s single quarters and build better housing units.
This was revealed by acting Kwekwe Town Clerk Lucia Mkandla in a telephone interview with H-Metro. She said:
<blockquote>There is an ongoing project to upgrade Mbizo 7 whereby the council will demolish some rooms there and build better structures.
Those who will be affected by the operation shall be relocated to other areas where we are building houses for them.</blockquote>
Meanwhile, Mbizo 7 residents are not pleased by the council’s failure to inform them of its plans. The residents said that they learnt of the looming “<a href="https://www.pindula.co.zw/Operation_Murambatsvina" rel="noopener noreferrer" target="_blank">Operation Murambatsvina</a>” through social media.

Kwekwe To Demolish Mbizo 7 Housing Structures

Kwekwe City Council has started rolling out installing prepaid water meters throughout the city.
Kwekwe city council installed about 300 prepaid water meters as a pilot project last year and is still monitoring the performance and effectiveness of the new system.
In an interview with The Herald, Kwekwe deputy mayor, Shadreck Tobaiwa, said councillors gave the local authority the green light to go ahead with the implementation of the new system and officials were on the ground installing the meters.

Kwekwe Starts Installing Prepaid Water Meters

Kwekwe City Council has decided to take legal action against defaulting ratepayers to recover $45 million.
Addressing a full council meeting, Kwekwe treasurer Mrs Rejoice Maweni said council has since served defaulting ratepayers with letters of demand. Said Maweni:
<blockquote>We have issued final demand letters to the defaulters. In the meantime, we are preparing a list of the defaulters which we are going to hand over to our lawyers. We exhausted all other means to try and convince the defaulters to pay. We were then left with one option, taking the legal route.</blockquote>
However, Alex Homela, who is the Kwekwe Residents and Ratepayers Association (KRRA) secretary-general said council is being insensitive.
