A Zimbabwean lecturer based in South Africa is suing his employer for allegedly underpaying him for the past six years.
Nhlanhla Moses Ncube, originally from Nkayi in Matabeleland North, currently works as a lecturer in the community education and training sector under the Department of Higher Education and Training in South Africa.
In an interview with <a href="https://newsday.co.zw/southerneye/local/article/200033229/zim-teacher-in-sa-court-over-salary">Southern Eye</a>, Ncube confirmed that his labour dispute is now in court. He said:
<blockquote>
I am currently underpaid as I am being paid for diploma-level expertise despite having acquired two bachelor’s degrees. I am still struggling to get my money.
In South Africa, you can take the employer to court and possibly win the case.
I am currently taking my employer to court over unpaid monies that the employer owes me.
I am using the Zimbabwe Exemption Permit which I acquired through the asylum seeker permit.
It was easy to get it because it was a politically negotiated settlement.

The court case is currently pending, awaiting a scheduled hearing.
Ncube, who was a teacher at a secondary school in Zimbabwe, left the country in 2007 at the height of the hyperinflation crisis. He said:
<blockquote>
Working and living conditions in Zimbabwe were far below reasonable expectations.
The environment was parallel to forced labour because we were not allowed to protest against exploitation by the employer. Protesting against slave wages was treated as a crime.
We experienced hell but abandoning my job in Zimbabwe was not easy due to the patriotism I have towards my community.

The lowest salary scale for educators in South Africa is R154,671 per year, while the highest salary is R1.209 million.

A teacher from Zimbabwe who now works in South Africa is suing his employer for not paying him enough money. He has two bachelor's degrees but is only being paid like someone with a diploma. The teacher is using a special permit to take his employer to court. He left Zimbabwe in 2007 because of bad living and working conditions. The court case is still waiting to be heard. In South Africa, teachers can make between R154,671 to R1.209 million a year.

Zimbabwean Lecturer Sues South African Employer Over Alleged Wage Theft

Prominent researcher and National University of Science and Technology (NUST) lecturer, Professor George Shava has died. He was 59.
Shava, who had been battling a heart ailment since 2016, collapsed and died on Saturday at his home in Bulawayo.
He was one of the few full professors at NUST who was instrumental in crafting policies around the training of high school teachers and implementing Education 5.0.
Speaking to the <a href="https://www.chronicle.co.zw/nust-lecturer-collapses-dies/">Chronicle</a> on Sunday, at their family home at Lot 1, Beuna Vista, his widow, Nosizo Shava described her late husband as a loving person who was passionate about academic issues. She said:

We are saddened by the loss of our father, friend and grandfather who was so full of life. He was diagnosed with a heart condition in 2016 and has been on medication since then.
On Saturday after supper, he just collapsed and when we got to the hospital we received the bad news. He will be greatly missed by his family, friends and the church.

A service was held on Monday at their home at 12 midday before the family left for Mberengwa where Prof Shava will be buried this Tuesday, 12 March.
Prof Shava joined NUST in 2011 as a lecturer and was promoted to senior lecturer, then associate professor and eventually a full professor.
NUST director of communication and marketing Thabani Mpofu said Prof Shava supervised several PhD students locally and regionally. He said:

He supervised several PhD students locally and regionally, and these include students from Zimbabwe Open University, the North West University in South Africa, the University of Namibia and NUST.
He was supervising three students at NUST currently and he externally supervised 17 PhD students from local and regional universities including the Tshwane University, University in Limpopo Northwest University in South Africa and some were from the University of Namibia.
We have lost a researcher and academic and we are poorer as NUST as he was an expert in technical engineering training and education which is key to implementing Education 5.0.
Prof Shava mentored many academics and was always willing to work with anyone. On behalf of the council chairperson, the Vice Chancellor, and the NUST family we would like to send our condolences to Shava, her family and friends.
We are at a loss of words and we will cherish the hard work that Prof Shava put in for our academic institution.

Prominent NUST Lecturer Collapses, Dies

A University of Zimbabwe lecturer was robbed of cash and cellphones along Kirkman Road by a “Mushikashika” crew on Sunday.
The lecturer, Solomon Scot (35) of Tynwald North, reportedly boarded a grey Toyota Probox at Engen Service Station in Kirkman Road, Belvedere, intending to go to Westgate shops.
There were two men inside pretending to be passengers.
However, after travelling some distance, one of the two men he found in the vehicle grabbed him by the neck and ordered him to surrender all his valuables.
The robbers took Scot’s Infinix cellphone, national ID card, driver’s licence and cash.
ZRP spokesperson in Harare Province, Inspector Luckmore Chakanza, confirmed the incident to <a href="https://www.hmetro.co.zw/uz-lecturer-robbed-in-mushikashika/">H-Metro</a>.
He said the robbers dumped Scot soon after taking his belongings and sped off. Added Chakanza:

The victim failed to capture the registration number of the vehicle. He lost a total of US$150.
</blockquote>
Police in Harare have repeatedly advised members of the public to avoid boarding pirate taxis (Mushikashika).
However, in some cases, commuters are left with no option but to use mushikashika as public transport is not readily available in some parts of Harare.

UZ Lecturer Robbed By Mushikashika Crew

A Zimbabwean university lecturer has dragged a traditional leader to court for accusing him of proposing love to married women in Chigodora.
Ranganai Njodzi (pictured), a Computer Science lecturer at a local university, is accused of destroying marriages in the peri-urban area of Chigodora and pampering the wives with chickens.
The lecturer is also accused of assaulting the women’s husbands and leaving them for dead.
This was revealed recently after Njodzi dragged Village head Gosho whose real name is Denford Zimunya to Headman Chigodora’s court.
Njodzi accused Gosho of soiling his image in the community through what he described as unfounded allegations. He said:

Gosho called for a meeting at his homestead and told the gathering that I was a marriage wrecker and robber.
He instructed the people to attack me with stones and I now fear for my safety because these people are baying for my blood.
They no longer want me in the area because of the instructions they got from their community leader, yet I am not a marriage wrecker.
He has tarnished my image in the community. I work at a local university and some of my students stay in the area. They no longer respect me because of the allegations.
This man (Gosho) hates me, a reason why he wants to destroy my good social standing.

Njodzi challenged Gosho to bring forward witnesses who can confirm that he had proposed love to married women.
Gosho said he had witnesses, adding that the husbands and their wives refused to attend the court out of fear of victimisation. He said:
<blockquote>
I have witnesses. He is in the habit of proposing love to married women and pampers them with chickens.
When the women’s husbands confront him over the issue, he assaults them.
He even stripped naked one of the husbands before assaulting him. The man fled and hid in the graveyard.

The village head said he was about to expel Njodzi out of his area saying he doesn’t accept marriage wreckers.
However, Headman Chigodora criticised Gosho for tarnishing Njodzi’s image before establishing the truth. He said:

Instead, after hearing the allegations, you hurriedly convicted Njodzi in his absence and ordered people to stone him. You were wrong and should rectify your mistake.
We do not know whether he is womaniser or not, but he needs to be given a chance to present his side of the story.

Village Head Orders Stoning Of "Marriage Wrecker"

The Zimbabwe Republic Police (ZRP) is being sued by vehicle owners across the country whose cars were impounded by law enforcement agents.
On 15 January 2022, ZRP launched an operation targetting vehicles without number plates and licence discs and thousands of vehicles have been seized since then.
The police said the recent increase in armed robberies, theft, rapes and kidnappings, among other vices, were a result of unregistered vehicles which were used as getaway cars.
However, some motorists have opened civil cases against ZRP demanding their cars and payment for damages on their vehicles during the time they were impounded.
One such motorist is Tazorora Takunda Goto Musarurwa, a lawyer and lecturer at the University of Zimbabwe (UZ).
Last week, Musarurwa filed an urgent chamber application at the Harare High Court citing police Commissioner-General Godwin Matanga, police officer commanding Traffic Harare Central and the City of Harare.
Musarurwa, through his lawyer, Advocate Benjamin Magogo, has demanded the return of his car which was impounded by the police. He said:

Applicant is the owner of a Mazda CX-5 motor vehicle and has been in possession of the vehicle at all relevant times.
The motor vehicle was duly imported into Zimbabwe but has not yet completed all registration formalities.
On January 15, 2022, a statement was issued by Chief Superintendent Blessmore Chishaka on behalf of the first respondent (Matanga) where it was stated that all plate-less, unregistered and unlicensed vehicles will be impounded and cases referred to court for prosecution.
The statement further said the operation is being conducted in order to account for the criminals who are committing crimes using these vehicles.
On January 19, 2022, the applicant’s motor vehicle was impounded by the police officers acting under the instruction of the first respondent.
No legal basis has been provided for such impounding other than the directive given by the first respondent.
The applicant has not been charged with any criminal offence and has only been told to obtain number plates in order to have his vehicle returned to him.

Musarurwa said his vehicle was taken to a compound owned by the second respondent (Officer in Charge Harare Central) where it is accruing storage charges of US$30 per day. He added:
<blockquote>
On December 20, 2021, I entered into an agreement of sale with Ishmael Munjozi where I purchased a Mazda CX-5.
The vehicle was imported into Zimbabwe on November 11, 2021, and has temporary number plates indicating that the validity of the number plate is indefinite. These number plates are in the vehicle.

Musarurwa said he was arrested on 19 January 2022 despite showing the ZRP officers temporary plates and car documentation.
The officers insisted that they had strict instructions to impound all cars without number plates.
He said the vehicle was seized by the police but they did not give him any documentation to confirm the booking of the car as well as an accounting of the contents of the car.
Musarurwa is demanding the return of his vehicle upon the service of the court order by the sheriff and for the respondents to meet the cost of the suit.
The respondents are yet to file opposition papers on the matter.

UZ Lecturer Demands Return Of Car Impounded During Police Blitz

A former Midlands State University (MSU) philosophy lecturer, Ishmael Jeko, was found dead in his house last Friday.
Jeko was vice-president of Midlands State University Lecturers Association (MSULA) but was recently fired from work under unclear circumstances.
It is thought that he died from stress emanating from his sudden dismissal from employment.
Jeko becomes the fourth MSU employee to die suddenly after a brush with the management in a short period of time.
In 2020, Solomon Raja from MSU’s Works and Estates Department collapsed and died in his house last year after a prolonged suspension from duty without salary and benefits.
Earlier, Abious Marozva, an administrator at MSU, had collapsed and died in his house after a demotion from lectureship to an administrative role.
A few months before Marozva’s death, Samson Rwadzi Mhlahlo died at his South Downs home after being demoted from the post of executive dean of Social Sciences to the post of acting director of Press and publications. He was no longer an academic.
NewsDay quoted as source as saying stress levels at MSU have gone up lately as the institution is in the habit of suspending staff members indefinitely. Said the source:

This is clearly worrisome. Stress levels at MSU seem to have gone up lately and incidentally, those collapsing and dying would have had an abrasion of some sort with leadership.
For instance, in the past, instead of one’s suspension without salary and benefits lasting 14 days in line with the Labour Act, at MSU, one could be suspended in perpetuity.

MSULA president Farai Ncube refused to comment on the matter saying he was at his farm.
Meanwhile, a leaked MSU memo dated 25 August 2021 and signed by registrar Tinashe Zishiri shows more heads are set to roll. It read in part:

Restructuring and rationalisation should be complete by the end of the year. Restructuring and rationalisation of the catering services department is almost complete.
The next phase of restructuring and rationalisation will cover the Faculty of Social Sciences and non-teaching departments, namely the human resources department, projects and maintenance department and central services and amenities department.
Communication on voluntary retrenchment, early retirement and compulsory retrenchment targeting the above-mentioned will be circulated in due course.

MSU spokesperson Mirirai Shorwa Mawere could not be reached for comment as her mobile went unanswered, while Zishiri refused to comment saying he was late for his flight.

Fired MSU Lecturer Found Dead

A lecturer at a Harare college has been sentenced to 12 years in jail for raping a student.
The 23-year-old educator pleaded not guilty when he appeared before a Harare magistrate on Friday. However, magistrate Gloria Takundwa found him guilty due to overwhelming evidence. Four years were suspended on condition of good behaviour.
The magistrate considered the age of the victim (19 years), and the sentence was to act as a deterrent to teachers who would prey on students.
Prosecutors Chipo Chitambo said that the convict approached the complainant on February 15 this year and made a love proposal.
On the 20th of the same month, he ordered the student to remain behind after a lecture and she complied.
The convict then forced himself upon the complainant after locking the door to a reception area where he did the deed. The complainant then  bolted out of the room soon after the incident and went to the police base along First Street where she reported the matter.
The lecturer was picked up by the police within 30 minutes of committing the offence. The victim was referred to the hospital for medical examination.
