The <a href="https://www.pindula.co.zw/Harare_Institute_of_Technology/">Harare Institute of Technology (HIT)</a> in Zimbabwe has made significant progress in the production of lithium batteries for passenger vehicles, the state-run <a href="https://www.chronicle.co.zw/zimbabwe-starts-lithium-car-batteries-production/">Chronicle</a> reported. This breakthrough has the potential to accelerate the country’s involvement in clean energy technologies. Zimbabwe boasts one of the world’s largest reserves of hard-rock lithium, a crucial mineral used in the production of lithium-ion batteries.
HIT has successfully purified lithium phosphate and manufactured prototype cells, marking a significant step towards commercial production. The university’s Vice Chancellor, Dr. <a href="https://www.pindula.co.zw/Quinton_Kanhukamwe/">Quinton Kanhukamwe</a>, announced their vision to commence commercial production of lithium batteries for vehicles in 2024 during HIT’s 14th graduation ceremony where President <a href="https://www.pindula.co.zw/Emmerson_Mnangagwa/">Emmerson Mnangagwa</a> capped 639 students, with 38.8% of them being female graduates. Dr. Kanhukamwe said:

As a result, your university has been successful in developing a lithium phosphate 3.2V, 60Ah battery cell, when coupled in either parallel for more voltage or series for enhanced current, the cells will produce sufficient power to drive passenger vehicles.
Our vision is to start commercial production of lithium batteries for vehicles in 2024.
</blockquote>
He expressed pride in the university’s engineering and technology graduates, highlighting their strong entrepreneurial skills and determination to establish high-tech enterprises. 
Dr. Kanhukamwe also highlighted the progress made in various sectors of the economy alongside the breakthrough in lithium battery production. HIT is collaborating with Kosygin Russian State University and local universities to improve cotton output, which is currently low compared to Russia and India. The focus is on cotton seed development to increase farmers’ income and boost exports.
HIT is also engaged in designing and manufacturing transformers for commercial sale and has launched three spin-off companies. These spin-offs include InstiBio, which focuses on agricultural and medical biotechnology, InstiRad, which provides affordable radiography services to underserved communities, and InstiQuip, which offers machine design expertise.
The institute has expanded research collaborations with universities in China, Russia, the United States, Indonesia, and Belarus, aiming to enhance research quality and innovation. Additionally, HIT has established a training collaboration with Rwanda’s Ministry of Health to enrol students in radiography and ultrasound degree programs. These efforts contribute to the development of Zimbabwe’s economy and healthcare sector.

Harare Institute Technology (HIT) Zimbabwe Makes Progress In Producing Lithium Batteries

Chinese steel manufacturer Dinson Iron and Steel Company (DISCO) has announced plans to produce lithium-ion batteries in Zimbabwe saying the southern African country has all the raw materials required in the production process.
The company expects to produce two million tonnes of lithium concentrate per year to support the battery manufacturing plant, according to <a href="https://www.sundaymail.co.zw/chinese-firm-to-manufacture-lithium-batteries-in-zim">The Sunday Mail</a>.
DISCO, which is currently <a href="https://zero.pindula.co.zw/zimbabwe-set-to-become-africas-largest-steel-producer/">constructing Africa’s largest integrated steel plant</a> in Manhize near Mvuma to the tune of US$1.5 billion, is one of the three local subsidiaries of the world’s largest stainless steel producer Tsingshan Holdings.
DISCO project director Mr Wilfred Motsi said Zimbabwe is endowed with mineral resources such as nickel and graphite that are key in the production of lithium-ion batteries. He said:

As a company, we are gratified by the Government’s position to ban raw lithium exports; it is something that we have been waiting for and it also strategically positions us in our plans to go green and set up a lithium-ion battery manufacturing plant.
Zimbabwe is endowed with vast mineral resources, including graphite in the Karoi area, and nickel, which are critical raw materials in lithium-ion battery production.
So, given our future plans for the battery manufacturing plant, the vast mineral endowment, coupled with the move by the Government to ban raw lithium exports, puts us on track to set up a viable project in Zimbabwe.
We really commend the Government for banning raw lithium exports, even on chrome ore. We are one of the proponents of such a policy. 
We have not yet gone to the stage of identifying the plant’s location and cost. We are still doing feasibility studies and significant headway has been made in that regard

In December 2022, <a href="https://zero.pindula.co.zw/zimbabwe-bans-export-of-raw-lithium/">Zimbabwe banned exports of lithium ore and unpurified lithium salts</a> in a bid to encourage investment in local processing facilities.
The government said only producers who special circumstances can be exempted from the ban but still would have to pay the 15 per cent export tax.
Lithium-ion batteries are used in electric vehicles, electronic gadgets, toys, wireless headphones, hand-held power tools, and small and large power appliances, as well as electrical energy storage systems.
