The Citizens Coalition for Change (CCC) faction led by Welshman Ncube has accused certain Members of Parliament of buying positions from Sengezo Tshabangu, the leader of a rival faction and contested interim secretary-general.
In an interview with <a href="https://www.newsday.co.zw/local-news/article/200036038/ccc-mps-paying-tshabangu-for-posts">NewsDay</a> on Sunday, CCC spokesperson Willas Madzimure claimed that some MPs were paying Tshabangu to either secure their places in Parliament or gain appointments to key positions. Said Madzimure:

There is money at play. Money is exchanging hands in a very serious manner. I am talking about large sums of money here.
It is not by merit that they are taking those positions. Some people are paying to assume those positions.
Kuti ahh ndoda kumbonzwa kuti chigaro ichi chinoita sei, then they pay money and are appointed.
You remove Mai Kore (Lynette Karenyi) as senior as she is — does that make sense? They are buying and selling positions.

This follows Tshabangu’s dismissal of Kore as the Leader of the House in the National Assembly, replacing her with Maureen Kademaunga, the Sunningdale legislator.
Edwin Mushoriwa, the former chief whip, was also removed in the reshuffle.
In the first six months after the 2023 general elections, Tshabangu recalled dozens of CCC MPs and councillors, asserting that they were no longer party members.

A group called CCC says some politicians are giving money to Sengezo Tshabangu for important positions in Parliament. CCC spokesperson says MPs are paying for positions they don't deserve. Tshabangu removed some leaders and put others in their place. He also removed many CCC members, saying they are no longer part of the party. This is causing a lot of drama within the political party.

CCC Faction Claims MPs Are Paying Tshabangu For Positions

Citizens Coalition for Change (CCC) disputed interim secretary-general Sengezo Tshabangu’s reportedly dismissed several party leaders from their posts in Parliament and appointed new ones. Those removed are seen as allies of Welshman Ncube.
According to <a href="https://www.newsday.co.zw/local-news/article/200035938/tshabangu-strikes-again-fires-party-leader">NewsDay</a>, among those affected is Lynette Karenyi-Kore, the Chikanga legislator, who was removed from her position as the leader of the House in Parliament.
She was replaced by Maureen Kademaunga, the legislator for Sunningdale. Earlier this year, Karenyi-Kore was named as president of the CCC on a rotational basis with Ncube, but she has not yet assumed that role.
Other dismissals include Edwin Mushoriwa, the former chief whip, who was replaced by Charles Moyo. Sam Chapfudza was appointed deputy chief whip.
Tshabangu also removed several Parliamentary Portfolio Committee chairpersons. Caston Matewu, the Marondera Central MP, was ousted as chairperson of the Parliamentary Portfolio Committee on Media, Information and Broadcasting Services, with Zivai Mhetu taking over the role.
Thokozani Khupe was appointed as the new chairperson of the Parliamentary Portfolio Committee on Higher and Tertiary Education, Innovation, Science, and Technology, replacing Minenhle Ntandoyenkosi Gumede.
Other changes included Senator Maxwell Mdhluri replacing Sithabisiwe Moyo as chairperson of the Thematic Committee on Indigenisation and Richard Tsvangirai stepping in as the deputy chairperson of the Youth Caucus, replacing Takudzwa Ngadziore. S Dube also replaced Ropafadzo Makumire as the secretary of the Youth Caucus.
In response to the dismissals, Mushoriwa informed fellow party members of his resignation in a WhatsApp group for CCC legislators. He wrote:

Greetings Hon Members. Just to advise that my six-month stint as the opposition chief whip of the National Assembly has come to an end.
I got the communication this morning from the Clerk of Parliament and the announcement will be done in due course when Parliament resumes.
</blockquote>
The spokesperson of the CCC faction aligned with Ncube, Willias Madzimure said he was not aware of the changes. He said:
<blockquote>
I would not know since it is Parliament business. But if it was anything to do with the party led by Welshman Ncube, I would know. If it was coming from someone else, I would not know.
</blockquote>
Kademaunga told NewsDay that she was not aware of the appointment.

The CCC leader, Sengezo Tshabangu, fired some party leaders in Parliament and brought in new ones. People who were friends with Welshman Ncube were removed. For example, Lynette Karenyi-Kore lost her job as leader of the House and was replaced by Maureen Kademaunga. The chief whip Edwin Mushoriwa was also replaced. Tshabangu made many changes in Parliament committees. Some people resigned because of the changes. Some party members did not know about the changes. Kademaunga said she did not even know she was appointed. There is confusion and uncertainty in the CCC party.

Tshabangu Dismisses Ncube Allies In Parliamentary Reshuffle

The National Standing Committee of the Citizens Coalition for Change (CCC) faction led by disputed interim Secretary General Sengezo Tshabangu, held a meeting in Bulawayo on Saturday to select an interim president for the party.
During the meeting, it was decided that <a href="https://www.pindula.co.zw/Welshman_Ncube/">Welshman Ncube</a>, <a href="https://www.pindula.co.zw/Tendai_Biti/">Tendai Biti</a>, and <a href="https://www.pindula.co.zw/Lynette_Karenyi/">Lynette Karenyi-Kore</a> would serve as interim presidents on a rotational basis. Each leader will serve for 90 days or three months before passing the responsibilities to the next leader. Welshman Ncube, a lawyer and former Minister of Industry and Commerce, will be the first to assume the role.
<a href="https://www.pindula.co.zw/Jacob_Mafume/">Jacob Mafume</a>, a lawyer and the Mayor of Harare, was elected as the party’s national spokesperson, a position previously held by Promise Mkwananzi since August 2023, after taking over from Fadzayi Mahere.
The meeting also decided to reactivate the MDC 2019 congress posts, which means Chalton Hwende (Kuwadzana East MP) will resume the position of secretary general.
These office-bearers will serve until the party holds its elective congress to choose permanent leaders.
The CCC has been facing a leadership crisis since the aftermath of the 2023 harmonised elections when Tshabangu claimed that he was the party’s interim secretary general. He recalled some Members of Parliament and councillors, arguing that they were imposed on the electorate by Nelson Chamisa, the former party president and that they had ceased to belong to the party.
As the recalls continued, Chamisa resigned from the party, stating that it had been infiltrated and taken over by the ruling ZANU PF party and its allies in the CCC. Since Chamisa’s departure, factions within the party have been vying for control. Promise Mkwananzi asserted that he was the acting president until the party congress, which is yet to be announced. Additionally, some members have resigned from the party Parliament and local authorities in solidarity with Chamisa.

Welshman Ncube, Tendai Biti, Karenyi-Kore Appointed CCC Interim Presidents Amid Leadership Crisis

Senior officials of the Citizens Coalition for Change (CCC) held a meeting on Sunday 28 January 2024 to address the leadership crisis that has worsened since the departure of Nelson Chamisa, the former leader. According to <a href="https://www.newsday.co.zw/local-news/article/200022432/ccc-to-name-chamisa-replacement-tuesday">NewsDay</a>, the party is set to announce Chamisa’s replacement on Tuesday, January 30, 2024. During the crisis meeting, Nqobizitha Mlilo was appointed as the new party spokesperson, with Caston Matewu and Discent Bajila as his deputies.

Chamisa left the main opposition in Zimbabwe, alleging that the party had been infiltrated and hijacked by the ruling ZANU PF and its allies within the CCC. Some CCC Members of Parliament and councillors have also left in support of Chamisa, who is reportedly establishing a new political group.
<h3>Rumours and more rumours</h3>
Karenyi Kore, Tendai Biti, and Welshman Ncube are considered the top contenders for the leadership position in the CCC. They were all elected as VPs by the <a href="https://www.pindula.co.zw/2019/05/27/mdc-congress-results-the-winners/">Gweru Congress of 2019.</a>
Meanwhile, there are reports that the party’s disputed interim secretary general, Sengezo Tshabangu, has reactivated the 2019 MDC Gweru Congress structures. However, Promise Mkwananzi, who has been the party’s spokesperson since August 2023, dismissed these reports and stated that the party would provide an official announcement.
Additionally, an unverified letter suggests that the party has decided to appoint Mkwananzi as the acting president until an elective congress is held within the CCC. The letter read:

Mkwananzi has not dissociated himself from the letter.
Former Information Minister Professor Jonathan Moyo commented on the situation, stating that the circus surrounding Mkwananzi’s claim as Chamisa’s successor reflects more on Chamisa himself and his attempts to create political distractions. Mkwananzi is known to be a close and trusted ally of Chamisa. He previously held the position of President of the Zimbabwe National Student Union (ZINASU) from 2006 to 2007. However, during his time as a student leader, Mkwananzi was expelled from the University of Zimbabwe. Mkwananzi greatly admires Nelson Chamisa whom he idolises.

Leadership Crisis: CCC Officials Meet To Address Chamisa's Departure, Set To Announce Replacement

Member of Parliament for Chikanga <a href="https://pindula.co.zw/Lynette_Karenyi">Lynette Karenyi Kore</a> has distanced herself from reports that she has been appointed as the leader of the opposition in parliament by CCC, replacing Amos Chibaya.
According to media reports on Friday, disputed CCC interim secretary general Sengezo Tshabangu named Karenyi Kore as the new leader of the opposition in parliament.
However, speaking to VOA Studio 7, Karenyi Kore said she knew nothing about the purported appointment. She said:

I know nothing about that, I have seen social media posts claiming I have replaced [Nelson] Chamisa. How can I replace President Chamisa… as who?
</blockquote>
On Thursday, Chamisa announced he was quitting CCC alleging that the party had been hijacked by the ruling ZANU PF party.
Some former MDC members, who preferred anonymity, subsequently issued a statement saying CCC’s leadership structure would revert to the officials elected at the MDC Alliance congress in Gweru in May 2019, before the party rebranded to CCC on 24 January 2022.
Karenyi Kore was one of the MDC Alliance’s three vice presidents alongside Welshman Ncube and Tendai Biti.

Karenyi Kore "Unaware" Of Purported Appointment As Leader Of Opposition

Member of Parliament for Chikanga <a href="https://pindula.co.zw/Lynette_Karenyi">Lynette Karenyi Kore</a> has reportedly been appointed as the leader of the opposition in parliament by CCC, replacing Amos Chibaya.
Chibaya was recalled by disputed CCC interim secretary general Sengezo Tshabangu and subsequently barred by a court from running in by-elections set for 03 February.
The decision to elevate Karenyi Kore comes after CCC leader Nelson Chamisa resigned from the party on Thursday.
The party subsequently issued a statement saying the CCC’s leadership structure would revert to the officials elected at the MDC Alliance congress in Gweru in May 2019, before the party rebranded to CCC on 24 January 2022.
Karenyi Kore was one of the MDC Alliance’s three vice presidents alongside Welshman Ncube and Tendai Biti.
According to <a href="https://www.zimlive.com/ccc-standing-committee-to-meet-on-new-leader-kore-now-leader-of-opposition/">ZimLive</a>, CCC has called a meeting of its standing committee on Sunday to appoint an acting leader to take over from Chamisa, with both Ncube and Biti expected to attend the meeting.
ZimLive reported a source as saying CCC was also seeking urgent talks with Tshabangu. Said the source:

One of his stated goals was that he wanted to return the party to constitutionalism and collective decision-making.
The resolution to return to 2019 structures achieves that and given that he is the one that is now recognised by parliament and the courts as interim secretary general, we hope he will be happy to surrender the party back to its elected officials.

Meanwhile, several CCC MPs have taken to social media to show their loyalty to Chamisa and say they “stand with him.”
However, none of the MPs has resigned, but they will be expected to back their words with actions in the coming days.

Karenyi Kore Named Leader Of The Opposition In Parliament

The MDC Vice President Ms Lynette Karenyi Kore has released a statement dismissing social media rumours claiming she resigned from the MDC Alliance.
Karenyi said she will not leave her party because what they were doing is a national project and why would she leave now:
<blockquote>There are false and malicious social media posts claiming that I have resigned from my position as VP of MDC Alliance.
Its not usually my policy to respond to malicious reports by certain people with hidden agendas. However I want to make it clear that the MDC Alliance is the only vehicle confronting the regime and there is no question of me abandoning that national project for which many lost their lives.

The opposition MDC led by Nelson Chamisa held a rally in Mabvuku, Harare where the party’s acting president, Lynette Karenyi-Kore was the main speaker.
It is however surprising considering that the state has recently <a href="https://news.pindula.co.zw/2019/11/16/police-block-yet-another-mdc-rally/">banned two of the party’s rallies within one week including the Domboshava</a> rally that was scheduled for this weekend.
State police have been arguing that the MDC’s applications for permission to hold rallies were failing to meet the requirements of the Public Porder and Security Act (<a href="https://www.pindula.co.zw/Public_Order_and_Security_Act">POSA</a>).
