The Ministry of Health and Childcare recorded 1 841 malaria cases and 7 deaths in the week ending 28 April 2024.
According to a recent Disease Surveillance Report by the Ministry, out of the 1,841 malaria cases, 162 were children under five years of age.
Masvingo District recorded 2 deaths, while Hurungwe District, Makonde District, Mazowe District, Guruve District, and Mt Darwin District recorded 1 death each. Reads the report:

The deaths were reported from Masvingo District (2) in Masvingo Province, Hurungwe District (1) and Makonde District(1) in Mashonaland West Province, Mazowe District (1), Guruve District(1), Mount Darwin District (1) in Mashonaland Central Province.
The provinces that reported the highest number of cases were Mashonaland Central Province (792) and Mashonaland West Province (415). The cumulative figures for malaria cases are 21 298 and 44 deaths.

In the first eight months of 2023, Zimbabwe recorded 144,508 positive malaria cases, with regions such as Mashonaland Central, Mashonaland East, Manicaland, Matabeleland North, and Masvingo accounting for 97% of these cases.
Malaria is a disease caused by parasites that are transmitted to people through bites from infected female Anopheles mosquitoes.
Symptoms usually appear within 10–15 days after being bitten by an infected mosquito.
The common malaria symptoms include fever, headache, chills, extreme tiredness and fatigue, impaired consciousness, multiple convulsions, difficulty breathing and jaundice (yellowing of the eyes and skin).

1 841 Malaria Cases, 7 Deaths Recorded In One Week

The Ministry of Health and Child Care has reported five fatalities and 1,588 new malaria cases in the week ending 24 March 2024.
In its latest Disease Surveillance Report, the Ministry said that 140 of the reported cases were from under (5) five years of age. Reads the report:
<blockquote>
The deaths were reported from Centenary District (1),Mt Darwin District (1) in Mash Central Province, District (2) in Masvingo Province and Mpilo Central Hospital in Bulawayo Province.
The provinces that reported the highest number of cases were Mashonaland Central Province (901) and Manicaland Province (243). The cumulative figures for malaria cases are 10 957 and 15 deaths.

Malaria is a disease caused by a parasite transmitted to humans through the bites of infected mosquitoes.
Symptoms of malaria include high fever, shaking, chills, general discomfort, headache, nausea and vomiting, diarrhoea, abdominal pain, muscle or joint pain, fatigue and rapid breathing and heart rate.
If left untreated, malaria can lead to severe health problems, including cerebral malaria, breathing problems, organ failure, anaemia and low blood sugar.
Malaria can be prevented by the use of insecticides and insecticide-treated bed nets to prevent mosquito bites, as well as preventive medicine before, during, and after travel to high-risk areas.

Zimbabwe Records Five Malaria Fatalities In One Week

The Ministry of Health and Child Care has urged members of the public who have malaria symptoms to seek medical attention within 24 hours to prevent deaths.
In response to questions by the <a href="https://www.chronicle.co.zw/seek-malaria-treatment-within-24-hours-to-avoid-death-government-warns/">Chronicle</a>, the Ministry said delays in accessing malaria treatment will lead to severe malaria that can lead to death. Said the ministry:
<blockquote>
Going for testing and treatment services within 24 hours of malaria symptoms (that include fever, headache, joint pains, loss of appetite, loss of appetite, nausea and vomiting) will facilitate early cure and completing the treatment course will break the chain of malaria transmission. Testing and treatment for malaria is free and can be accessed from village health workers and local health facilities.
</blockquote>
The Ministry said members of the public should be on the lookout for severe malaria signs and symptoms that include:
<blockquote>
1). jaundice (yellow eyes), 
2). white palms (anaemia) 
3). very high temperature, 
4). severe body weakness (unable to sit/stand), 
5). passing very little coca-cola-coloured urine/not passing urine at all, 
6). severe vomiting.

During the first week of 2023, Zimbabwe recorded a total of 1 950 malaria cases and six deaths. Of the reported cases 212 were from under the age of five.
The Ministry also intends to conduct Indoor Residual Spraying (IRS) in 25 districts during the 2022/2023 malaria season. 
Nine districts completed their spraying in 2022 and the remaining 16 districts are expected to finish by the end of January 2023. 
Indoor residual spraying is targeted at districts that have high malaria transmission.

Health Ministry Urges Those With Malaria Symptoms To Seek Help Within 24 Hours

The Ministry of Health and Child Care has reported that Zimbabwe recorded 151 deaths linked to malaria between January and October 2022.
The 2022 cumulative cases of Malaria stand at 92 310 as of October.
In its Weekly Diseases Surveillance report for the period 17 to 23 October, the ministry also said Zimbabwe recorded 1 650 malaria cases and 4 malaria deaths during the same week. 
The report also stated that Mashonaland East and Mashonaland Central Provinces, in that order, recorded 658 and 457 cases which are the highest in the land.
Meanwhile, the deaths were from Murewa District (2), Guruve District (1) and Harare (1).
The ministry also reported that 12.7 % of the reported cases, were from the under 5-year-olds category.

Zimbabwe Recorded 151 Malaria Deaths Between January And October 2022 - MoHCC

The World Health Organization (WHO) is recommending widespread use of the RTS,S/AS01 (RTS,S) malaria vaccine among children in sub-Saharan Africa and in other regions with moderate to high P. falciparum malaria transmission.
The recommendation is based on results from an ongoing pilot programme in Ghana, Kenya and Malawi that has reached more than 800 000 children since 2019. WHO Director-General Dr Tedros Adhanom Ghebreyesus said:
<blockquote>
This is a historic moment. The long-awaited malaria vaccine for children is a breakthrough for science, child health and malaria control.
Using this vaccine on top of existing tools to prevent malaria could save tens of thousands of young lives each year.
</blockquote>
Malaria remains a primary cause of childhood illness and death in sub-Saharan Africa. More than 260 000 African children under the age of five die from malaria annually.
In recent years, WHO and its partners have been reporting a stagnation in progress against the deadly disease.
Dr Matshidiso Moeti, who is the WHO Regional Director for Africa had this to say:
<blockquote>
For centuries, malaria has stalked sub-Saharan Africa, causing immense personal suffering.
We have long hoped for an effective malaria vaccine and now for the first time ever, we have such a vaccine recommended for widespread use.
</blockquote>
Today’s recommendation offers a glimmer of hope for the continent that shoulders the heaviest burden of the disease and we expect many more African children to be protected from malaria and grow into healthy adults.
According to BBC News, there are more than 100 types of the malaria parasite. The RTS,S vaccine targets the one that is most deadly and most common in Africa: Plasmodium falciparum.
Trials, reported in 2015, showed the vaccine could prevent around four in 10 cases of malaria, three in 10 severe cases and lead to the number of children needing blood transfusions falling by a third.
However, there were doubts the vaccine would work in the real world as it requires four doses to be effective.
The first three are given a month apart at five, six and seven months old, and a final booster is needed at around 18 months.

WHO Recommends Malaria Vaccine For Children At Risk

Manicaland Province has recorded over 100 deaths from malaria since the beginning of the year, while thousands have been affected.
According to Manicaland Provincial Medical Director Simon Nyadundu, the province has been recording between 800 and 1 000 malaria cases every week for the past three weeks. He said:
<blockquote>Manicaland has districts with the highest incidence for malaria nationally. To date, we have lost more than 100 people to malaria, which is a big number compared to around 80 at the same time last year.
Most of the deaths happened during the peak season around March and April. We have already exceeded the total for last year and the figures will definitely be higher by end of the year.</blockquote>
Nyadundu said most of the deaths were a result of delays in seeking medical attention.
Manicaland province is among the country’s malaria hotspots, with three out of its seven districts (Nyanga, Mutasa and Mutare) among the top 10 districts with the highest burden countrywide.

Malaria Kills 100 People In Manicaland

Malaria has killed a total of 98 people in Manicaland since the turn of the new year, New Zimbabwe reports.  This was revealed by Manicaland provincial epidemiology and diseases control officer, Munyaradzi Mukuzunga who said Cases surged 100%, the province only recorded 46 deaths during the same period last year:
<blockquote>Mutare and Mutasa had 22%, Chipinge 11%, Makoni and Buhera had 9% each. As of last week, we had 98 deaths across the province from malaria compared to 46 that we had in the same period in 2019,</blockquote>
Dr Mukuzunga shed light on the measures they were taking to compact the killer disease and said:
<blockquote>We are planning for indoor residual spraying (IRS) that will start September and October. The uptake of the programme was low due to some misconceptions surrounding the chemicals. What you need to realise is that in Chipinge two years ago, it was burdened with malaria, contributing 35 of total cases in the province.
At one time, Chipinge was spraying organophosphates but epidemiology data told us that it was not working for them. We had to change to start spraying DDT so the gains we are now getting are because of the use of DDT. It`s only the district that had a decline comparing the time we are in and comparing 2019.</blockquote>

Malaria Kills 98 People In Manicaland In 2020

The Minister of Health and Childcare, Obadiah Moyo has revealed that malaria cases have gone down by 18 per cent countrywide this week following the government’s interventions in hardest-hit areas.
Moyo also revealed that despite the drop in malaria infections, mortality remains high, with 265 malaria deaths that have been reported so far.
Speaking during a post-Cabinet briefing on Thursday, Minister Moyo said:
<blockquote>Review of our week 19 results shows that there is an 18 per cent drop on weekly reported cases from 26 103 in week 18 to 21 430 in week 19.
Malaria mortality, however, remains elevated. We have 265 malaria deaths that have been reported.</blockquote>
Official statics show that the country recorded more malaria cases in 2020 than in the past two years.
The government has, as a result, been distributing mosquito nets and conducting indoor residual spraying to curb the spread of the disease in the country.
Mashonaland Central, Mashonaland West, Manicaland, East and Matabeleland South provinces were the hardest hit by the outbreak.

Malaria Cases Fall, Mortality Remains High

Mutoko District is facing a double tragedy as the 2020 Malaria season has coincided with the period where Zimbabwe as the rest of the World is grappling with the fight of Covid-19 pandemic.
In a meeting with the Mutoko District Health Executive (DHE), it was revealed that respraying of hotspots was set to be rolled out this week.
Acting District Medical Officer (A/DMO) Dr Prince Mangwiro said volunteers were on the ground mobilizing to start respraying in the areas that had presented as Malaria hotspots for the District. He said:
<blockquote>We are embarking on this exercise as a mitigatory measure in light of the increase in cases this Malaria Season. This season has seen a sharp rise to 14806 from 4756 in 2018 and 5817 in 2019 respectively.
People have been doing a lot of outdoor activities such as market gardening as a source of livelihood. 12 deaths have also been recorded this 2020 hence the fight to recline the sharp curve.
Some of these deaths come from religious objectors who refuse treatment as well as obstruct treatment for their church members.</blockquote>
District Environmental Health Officer (DEHO) Chapata Madakudya, reported the district to have set out for the Malaria season with mobilisations and sensitization of the community for the Indoor Residual Spray (IRS).
As per IRS culture, there is a chemical rotation for each malaria season to ensure that the Anopheles does not grow resistant to the chemical hence the use of Fludora Fusion and OPs last season and DDT and OPs for the respraying, he said.
In light of the current increase in Malaria infections, the District has also conducted investigations to assess if the chemical on the walls is still effective. Said Madakudya:
<blockquote>Results obtained this week showed that the chemical sprayed during IRS is still on the walls and has 100 % mortality. Further to this, we are currently conducting a susceptibility test to investigate if the mosquito has not grown to be resistant to the sprayed chemical of which results are to be expected in two weeks time.</blockquote>
In preparation of the respraying, Madakudya said they will be strict observance of COVID-19 prevention guidelines for the teams right from transportation to the camps to ensure physical distance is maintained.
Nineteen wards surrounding health facilities like Katsukunya, Kapondoro, Mushimbo, Kushinga and Nyamuzuwe among others are set to be sprayed.

Mutoko District Set To Respray Malaria Hotspots

According to the Ministry of Health and Child Care, Malaria has claimed 131 lives in Zimbabwe. In a series of tweets, the ministry gave the statistics of the outbreak and said they recorded a total of 135 585 cases and 131 deaths over an unspecified period of time. The ministry also said they recorded 17 deaths and 18690 cases this week.
The Ministry further broke down the statistics and shared provincial statistics in these tweets:

Malaria Claims 131 Lives - Ministry of Health

There has been a spike in the number of recorded cases of malaria and deaths resulting from the disease in Manicaland province following floods induced by Tropical Cyclone Idai.
Manicaland Provincial medical director, Patron Mafaune, revealed that 66 people have died from the disease and close to 80 000 cases have been recorded since the start of the year. She said:
<blockquote>I want to thank all stakeholders who supported us during Cyclone Idai. Overall availability of medicine is 66,7% in Manicaland.
The challenge we had at the beginning of this year is the shortage of doctors because most of them had gone for studies, but the situation has since improved.
On the issue of malaria, we have recorded 77 711 cases of malaria this year in Manicaland and we have recorded 66 deaths since the start of the year, we are starting a spraying programme, we need your support so that we can go to homes.</blockquote>

Cases Of Malaria Spike In Manicaland Province

Speaking at an Indoor Residual Spraying (IRS) workshop in Mutare yesterday, provincial epidemiology and diseases control officer Dr Munyaradzi Mukuzunga, said Manicaland had recorded at least 137 confirmed cases of malaria deaths since January this year.
Dr Mukuzunga said that the rise in malaria cases this year was not unique to Manicaland following the increased rainfall received last year following an El Nino- induced drought. Said Dr Mukuzunga:
<blockquote>Of the 137 deaths recorded in the province, about 45 percent was recorded in Mutare city. The city was recently declared a malaria zone following the unprecedented increase in confirmed cases of malaria. Chipinge recorded 23 deaths, followed by Mutasa with 16 deaths and Buhera and Chimanimani with 12 deaths each. Nyanga and Makoni recorded the lowest number of deaths in the province at eight and four, respectively.</blockquote>

137 Die From Malaria In Manicaland

Appearing before the portfolio committee on Health and Child Care to brief the committee on the ministry preparedness in response to the emergence of Malaria and prevention of diarrhoeal diseases, Permanent Secretary in the Ministry of Health and Child Welfare retired brigadier general Gerald Gwinji revealed that there was an increase in the number of malaria outbreaks recorded this year compared to last year.
Said Gwinji:
<blockquote>During this period from January to date there was indeed an increase of malaria cases as compared to the same period last year and so far in 2017 we have recorded 134 224 cases and 194 deaths caused by malaria and if compared to 2016 at this same time we had only reported 80 964 cases.</blockquote>
According to Dr. Gwinji’s presentation, it also noted that there was a decrease of about 629 cases in the number of watery diarrhoea cases recorded compared to the same period this year.

231 people died from malaria in 2016 compared to 462 deaths recorded in 2015.
According to the Ministry of Health and Child Care’s Epidemic-Prone Diseases, Deaths and Public Health Events Report for the week ending December 18, six people died from malaria last week alone, while 2 802 cases were recorded. The deaths were reported from Manicaland Province, where two districts — Chimanimani and Mutare recorded one death each.
