The Zimbabwe Republic Police (ZRP) has released the names of people who died in a road traffic accident which occurred along Harare-Mutare Road, near Marondera on 27th December 2023. Five people were killed while 36 others were injured when a Blue Horizon bus, haulage truck and Mercedes Benz collided. In a statement seen by Pindula News, police spokesperson, Assistant Commissioner Paul Nyathi said:

Reference is made to the Zimbabwe Republic Police press statement released on 27th December 2023 on the fatal road traffic accident which occurred at the 64 kilometre peg along Harare-Mutare Road, Marondera on 27th December 2023 where five people were killed while 36 others were injured when a Blue Horizon bus, haulage truck and Mercedes Benz collided.
The Police releases the names of four of the five victims who were identified by their next of kin as listed:-

Meanwhile, three people died in a car accident that happened on December 28, 2023, at around 11:00 am along the Harare-Chirundu Road in Zimbabwe. 11 passengers were injured. The accident occurred when a kombi driver tried to overtake another vehicle. The kombi veered off the road, flipped over once, and landed on its wheels. The injured passengers were taken to Chinhoyi Provincial Hospital for treatment.
Nyathi said ZRP is deeply saddened by the loss of lives in road accidents and reminds all drivers to be careful and prioritize safety to prevent such tragedies.

Police Names Victims Of Marondera Accident

Four people died while several others sustained serious injuries in a road traffic accident involving a bus, haulage truck and a Mercedes Benz vehicle along the Harare-Mutare highway, near Marondera, on Wednesday, 27 December.
<a href="https://www.newsday.co.zw/local-news/article/200021421/four-die-in-marondera-road-accident">NewsDay</a> cited Zimbabwe Republic Police (ZRP) national spokesperson Assistant Commissioner Paul Nyathi, who was at the scene of the crash, as saying four bodies had been retrieved from the wreckage and the death toll could rise after rescue teams complete the removal of trapped people.

The cause of the crash has yet to be revealed but most accidents are attributable to reckless driving, inadequate enforcement of traffic laws and use of defective vehicles, among other factors.
According to the Traffic Safety Council of Zimbabwe (TSCZ), a road accident occurs in Zimbabwe every 15 minutes.

Four Killed In Marondera Accident Involving Bus, Mercedes Benz & Haulage Truck

A reported 15 vehicles were destroyed by fire at Top Gear Panel Beaters, a garage in Marondera town’s industrial sites, on Thursday night.
The vehicles were awaiting service and repairs and were parked inside the building when the fire, whose cause is yet to be ascertained, broke out.
<a href="https://www.herald.co.zw/15-cars-destroyed-by-fire-at-garage/">The Herald</a> reported sources as saying the Marondera fire brigade could not attend to the fire as its single fire tender was away for service.
A fire engine was despatched from Harare but by the time it arrived at the scene of the fire, the garage and the cars within it had been destroyed.
Zimbabwe Republic Police (ZRP) deputy spokesperson in Mashonaland East Province Assistant Inspector Misheck Denhere could not give the the exact number of vehicles destroyed.
However, sources close to investigations said more than 15 vehicles were destroyed in the inferno.
One of the residents of Marondera, Ralph Chimanikire, said the fire incident was tragic, adding that the Marondera Municipality needs to be capacitated. He said:

We are pained by this tragedy which has affected this young entrepreneur who was working here.
I am one of his clients. The unfortunate part is they could not get help to extinguish this fire. It is very unfortunate.
Something has to be done by Marondera Municipality so that they become proactive and react to issues like this one. 
We are so worried; a lot of vehicles have been destroyed. If only assistance had come in time, some vehicles were going to be saved.

A witness, Cecilia Chiwara, who lives near the garage, told The Herald that alerted the fire brigade about the fire and was told that they did not have equipment to assist. She said:

I first saw some smoke in the building and I immediately called the owner of the garage and told him about the fire.
I then rushed to the fire and ambulance site which is about 100 metres from the garage, and they told me that they did not have any vehicle to use.
I then called Harare’s fire department and they responded and by the time they got here, the fire had already destroyed all the vehicles in the building.

Marondera Municipality public relations officer Kudakwashe Tapfumaneyi released a statement on 01 September following the fire incident. It reads:

The Municipality of Marondera would like to inform Marondera residents and stakeholders that there was a fire outbreak at the Top Gear Panel Beaters in the industrial area last night.
The fire damaged cars and other property that was within the garage. The Council fire tender was out on routine service and could not be used to respond to the accident.
However, Council enlisted the assistance of the Harare City emergency services who managed to attend to the accident.
Council is liaising with the Police and other authorities to try to determine the cause of the fire outbreak. Details of the cause of the outbreak will be released to the public once investigations are concluded. 
Marondera Municipality is expecting to receive a new fire tender from the new fleet of fire tenders that were recently commissioned by His Excellency the President, D. ED Mnangagwa following their procurement from Belarus.
The new fire tender will be a good addition to our emergency vehicle fleet which currently only has one fire tender. 
Council would like to express its heartfelt sympathy to all those who lost their property due to the fire incident.
Residents and stakeholders are encouraged to remain calm while authorities carry out the necessary investigations.

15 Vehicles Awaiting Service Destroyed By Fire

A suspected ZANU PF youth was caught in Marondera while attempting to burn opposition CCC leader Nelson Chamisa’s billboards. The incident is believed to have been orchestrated under the direction of a person only identified as Lecturer Musa.
The suspect admitted to receiving a deposit of US$5 with the promise of an additional US$10 upon burning three billboards. The suspect claimed that they were initially deceived into believing they would be mounting their own banners, but the instructions changed, and they were instructed to burn Chamisa’s billboards instead. This is not the first instance of posters, banners, or billboards being destroyed during an election. Earlier this month, Muchirairwa Mugidho, the CCC cluster leader for Chiredzi, accused ZANU PF activists of vandalizing posters belonging to Ropafadzo Makumire, the Chiredzi Central CCC candidate. Mugidho stated that the posters were consistently destroyed within two days of being displayed and attributed these actions exclusively to ZANU PF members. 
ZANU PF has previously made claims that its political campaign posters were being destroyed by opposition members. Two CCC members were arrested in Manicaland for allegedly destroying ZANU PF posters. They were eventually acquitted as the State failed to present compelling evidence against the accused.
The destruction of posters, banners, or billboards is a clear violation of section 152(1) of the Electoral Act.

WATCH: Man Caught Trying To Burn Chamisa's Billboards

A Marondera man said he is lucky to be alive after he was “buried alive” after a well collapsed on him while he was 11 metres underground.
The Marondera well digger, Collin Kaseke (55), popularly known as Mudhara Vibes, said he was trapped for six hours in the well before he was rescued.
Speaking to <a href="https://www.newsday.co.zw/local-news/article/200012115/i-survived-being-buried-alive-for-6-hours">NewsDay</a> recently in Marondera, Kaseke said the rope he had used to lower himself into the well probably saved him from suffocating, making the opening that supplied him with oxygen. He said:
<blockquote>
I cannot forget that day, I always relive what happened. I cannot believe that I am still alive. It was by the Grace of God.
As I was going up using a rope, the well collapsed. Sand pushed me down, but I did not let the rope go.
I was facing downwards, I felt as if I was lifting the world. As people tried to pull the rope thinking that I was dead, I pulled it back signalling that I was alive. That created an opening that supplied oxygen.

Kaseke said his near-death experience changed his outlook on life and he is now a “born again” Christian. He said:
<blockquote>
While trapped, I observed that my ancestors who are buried underground were sleeping. I was under the earth and they did nothing.
I had to look up and the one above (God) saved me. I am now a member of the Grace Bible Academy.
</blockquote>
The Marondera Fire Brigade team pulled Kaseke out thinking they were retrieving a “dead body”. He said:

I started feeling that the weight of the sand was decreasing on me. Hope was renewed.
One of the rescuers grabbed my hand and when he discovered that I was alive he dropped it and fled.
He couldn’t believe that I had made it. They retrieved me after a caucus.

Kaseke reportedly dug hundreds of wells in and around Marondera, but he quit his job following his brush with death.
The accident left him with permanent injuries as his left hand is now paralysed. He said:
<blockquote>
… it is because I held to the rope for too long. I now survive on doing menial jobs.
</blockquote>
Here are some safety tips to be observed when digging wells:
<ul>
<li>Before you start digging ensure that there are no underground utility lines or pipes or telecommunication cables in the area where you plan to dig.</li>
<li>Wear protective gear such as gloves, eye protection, and a hard hat to protect yourself from potential hazards such as falling rocks.</li>
<li>Use tools designed specifically for digging wells, such as shovels and picks, and make sure they are properly sharpened.</li>
<li>Make sure there is proper ventilation in the well shaft to prevent the buildup of harmful gases such as carbon dioxide.</li>
<li>Digging a well by hand can be exhausting work, so take frequent breaks to rest and drink lots of fluids to keep hydrated.</li>
<li>In case of an accident or emergency, make sure you have a safety plan in place and know how to access emergency services.</li>
<li>It’s always safer to dig a well with a partner who can help watch out for potential hazards and lend assistance in case of an emergency.</li>

Marondera Well Digger "Buried Alive" For Six Hours

<a href="https://zero.pindula.co.zw/two-minors-killed-as-overloaded-honda-fit-vehicles-collide/">The accident</a> involving two overloaded Honda Fit vehicles along Ruwazi-Igava Road in Marondera has outraged members of the public with some saying the Zimbabwe Republic Police was sleeping on duty.
A <a href="https://zero.pindula.co.zw/two-minors-killed-as-overloaded-honda-fit-vehicles-collide/">police report</a> published earlier by Pindula News noted that the road traffic accident occurred on 23 January 2023 at the 4 km peg along Ruwazi–Igava Road, Marondera.
Two people died on the spot while 15 others were injured when a Honda Fit with eight passengers on board was involved in a head-on collision with another Honda Fit vehicle with nine passengers on board. 
The bodies of the victims were taken to Marondera Provincial Hospital mortuary for post-mortem whilst the injured were admitted at the same hospital.
ZRP spokesperson in Mashonaland East Province Inspector Simon Chazovachiyi identified the deceased as Akisha Madziwa (6), from Yellow City, and Ashy James (13) also from Yellow City in Marondera.
Inspector Chazovachiyi said the two died on the spot after sustaining head injuries.

Reactions To Accident Involving Two Honda Fit Cars Carrying 17 People

The business community in Marondera has voiced opposition to the move by the Municipality of Marondera to charge 2023 licence fees exclusively in United States dollars.
The local authority has reportedly ordered business owners to renew their licence fees in USD only even though the council budget is yet to be approved by the central government.
Some businesses have been ordered to pay as much as US$10 000 in licence fees.
Shopowners have demanded that the council should allow them to pay the licence fees in both local and foreign currencies.
Marondera Urban Business Forum (MUBF) chairperson Emmanuel Danha <a href="https://opencouncil.co.zw/marondera-business-rejects-usd-licence-fees/">told Open Council Marondera</a> that they will challenge the move by the local authority. Said Danha:

We have received quite a worrying number of complaints from those seeking clarity and guidance on the 2023 Business License Fees.
Apparently, the Council has started issuing quotations and invoices exclusively in USD terms only without any other payment options availed.
This is wrong, illegal and unilateral as the 2023 budget itself is yet to be approved by the government.
We will tackle the council head-on and come to the bottom of this dictatorship tendencies.

Marondera Business Community Rejects USD Licence Fees

Machete-wielding men attacked and killed a man only identified as Tinashe at a squatter camp near China Zim Gold Mill, Zvishavane, on Tuesday 15 November 2022.
The Zimbabwe Republic Police (ZRP) which is already investigating the case says five unknown suspects, armed with machetes, knives and logs, attacked Tinashe who sustained severe injuries and died on the spot. 
In a different case, Police in St Alberts arrested Rangarirai Mafigu (28) on Monday 15 November 2022 in connection with the murder of his brother Chriswell Mafigu (26).
It is alleged that Rangarirai struck his brother once on the head with a hoe after a misunderstanding over the sharing of money they had worked for at a farm in Chiweshe. The amount is not stated.
Chriswell sustained a deep cut on the head and died on the spot.
Meanwhile, ZRP Marondera arrested Lovemore Chishiri (44) in connection with the murder of his ex-wife, Spiwe Chishiri (41).
Lovemore allegedly assaulted  Spiwe to death after finding her with a boyfriend at Lower Paradise on Tuesday 15 November 2022.

Man Attacked And Killed By Machete-wielding Gang Near China Zim Gold Mill

Police in Marondera have recovered 205 sachets of marijuana (Mbanje) from a drug dealer who was selling the drug to members of the public in Marondera CBD and surrounding areas.
Upon his arrest, Norest Fungai Kujeke (26) was also found in possession of Benylin and Broncleer cough syrups.
National police spokesperson Assistant Commissioner Paul Nyathi confirmed the arrest in a statement. Reads the statement:

Police in Marondera acted on a tip-off and arrested Norest Fungai Kujeke for dealing in dangerous drugs. Detectives recovered 205 sachets of dagga , 17×100 mls Benylin, 7×100 mls Broncleer and 19×100 mls empty bottles of Broncleer.

This comes barely hours after the Zimbabwe Republic Police (ZRP) announced the <a href="https://news.pindula.co.zw/2022/10/18/two-bulawayo-men-caught-in-beitbridge-while-smuggling-drugs-worth-zw6-2-million/">arrest of two Bulawayo men who were attempting to smuggle drugs from South Africa</a> into Zimbabwe through the Beitbridge border.
They were arrested after the police Canine Unit searched their vehicles and discovered drugs that were hidden in some products.

Police Arrest 26-year-old Drug Dealer

The Zimbabwe Republic Police (ZRP) has arrested 7 suspects including a police officer stationed at Rhodesville in Harare over the murder of a Marondera businessman during a robbery on Friday 23 September 2022.
The assailants pounced on <a href="https://zero.pindula.co.zw/robbers-pounce-on-businessman-rob-him-of-cash-and-kill-him/">Lucas Chimoka at his residence in Paradise Park, Marondera on Friday at around 0200 hours, robbed him of US$7 900 and killed him.</a>  
A source who spoke to Pindula News said the arrests were effected last night (26 September 2022).
In an earlier statement seen by Pindula News, ZRP the suspects were armed with an unidentified pistol, iron bars, and spears.
They attacked the family before robbing them of US$7 910, a cellphone, and killing Chimoka. 
Meanwhile, some members of the public who responded to the arrest of the suspects expressed concern over the rise in robbery cases by members of the uniformed forces. One commentator said:

Some suggested that the rise in criminal activities reflected the collapse of the Zimbabwean economy. 
Over the years, police officers have often been accused of corruption, especially at roadblocks where they demand bribes from motorists who would be violating road and traffic regulations.

Police Officer, 6 Other Suspects Arrested Over Murder Of Marondera Businessman

A safe stolen from a private school in <a href="https://www.pindula.co.zw/Chihota">Chihota</a> early this month has been found dumped in a nearby forest, ZBC News reported.
The safe was stolen at UMAA Group of Schools in Chihota on the 7th of September 2022.
It is alleged that a group of 10 armed robbers pounced on the school at night, tied and assaulted eight workers before proceeding to the administration block where they used dynamites to gain entry and steal a safe.
The robbers also got away with cash amounting to US$1 255, cellphones and other valuables they stole from their victims.
Zimbabwe Republic Police (ZRP) Mashonaland East spokesperson, Inspector Simon Chazovachii confirmed the recovery of the safe and said investigations are underway.
UMAA owner, Mr Cleopas Kundiona said the safe was found a few kilometres from the school vandalised as the robbers were looking for cash. He said:

These robbers thought we had cash, so they went away with the safe only to discover there were documents.

The case adds to many more incidents of robberies in Marondera. Stolen Safe Found Dumped In A Forest

The Zimbabwe Republic Police (ZRP) is investigating a robbery and murder case in which a Marondera businessman was robbed and killed by unknown assailants on Thursday morning.
A police report seen by Pindula News says the robbers were armed with a pistol, iron bars and spears. Reads the statement:

The ZRP is investigating a case in which a Businessman (62) was killed in a robbery incident, in Paradise Park, Marondera, on 23/09/22 at around 0200 hours. Four suspects, armed with an unidentified pistol, iron bars, and spears, pounced at the victim’s house, where they attacked the family before robbing them of US$7 910, a cellphone, and killing the victim. Anyone with information to report at any nearest Police station.

Robbers have been targeting individuals, companies and even banks and other financial institutions.
Some members of the gangs believed to be behind the spate of robbery cases in the country are already behind bars while some are still on the run.

Robbers Pounce On Businessman, Rob Him Of Cash, And Kill Him

The Labour Court has ordered the municipality of Marondera to reinstate seven employees who were dismissed last year after being accused of being Nelson Chamisa’s sympathisers.
The workers approached the courts saying they were illegally dismissed after refusing to pledge allegiance to the Douglas Mwonzora-led MDC T.
According to a judgement issued on March 2, the local government authority has been ordered to reinstate the workers to their positions and pay them their defaulted salaries. Reds the judgment in part:

The claim for unlawful termination of the contracts of employment is upheld. The 1st to the 6th respondent be and is hereby reinstated into their original positions without loss of salary and benefits.
If reinstatement is no longer tenable, the council shall pay the workers’ damages for the premature loss of their jobs. The damages are to be agreed between the parties failure of which either party can refer the matter to the court for quantification.

Several people who were loyal to Chamisa lost their jobs last year following the takeover by the MDC T.
The 26 March by-elections were meant to replace the individuals who were recalled by the MDC-T.

Council Ordered To Reinstate Chamisa's Loyalists

ZANU PF has reportedly commandeered close to 100 hundred buses including school buses to ferry supporters to a rally in Marondera on Sunday ahead of the 26 March by-elections.
According to the Zimbabwe Human Rights NGO Forum, the buses transported people from the whole of Mashonaland East Province to Rudhaka Stadium for a ZANU PF rally to be addressed by Vice President Constantino Chiwenga.
From the pictures posted on Twitter by The Forum, ZANU PF used school buses and the Zimbabwe United Passengers Company (ZUPCO) buses, while a Zimbabwe Prisons and Correctional Service (ZPSC) bus could be seen in the background. See the pictures:

This comes after the Zimbabwe Republic Police (ZRP) warned the opposition Citizens Coalition for Change (CCC) against bussing its supporters to Zimbabwe Grounds, Highfields, Harare for its rally this Sunday.

Residents in Cherima suburb have once again complained against the Marondera council management’s selfishness following the laying of a new road along the street where the local councillor resides.
The repaired road passes through councillor <a href="https://www.pindula.co.zw/Dominic_Matangira">Dominic Matangira</a>’s house along Mutamba street.
This comes as residents are complaining about the laying of a new tar along councillor <a href="https://www.pindula.co.zw/Mubaiwa_Dzvuke">Mubaiwa Dzvuke</a>’s street in Nyameni.
Open Council Marondera visited the area and confirmed that the road was recently rehabilitated.
Memory Nyaguwe (48), a vendor criticised authorities for effecting development to their own benefit. Nyaguwe said:

We elected leaders to represent us and foster development for the benefit of all of us.
However, here we are.
Matangira lobbied for the rehabilitation of a road in Mutamba Street where he stays.
What about other roads that are in a bad state?
We have incompetent council management in Marondera. How can they let this happen?

Asked about this issue, Marondera Mayor <a href="https://www.pindula.co.zw/Simbarashe_Nyahuye">Simbarashe Nyahuye</a> each and every councillor has the power to determine any development needed in his or her ward.

Another Councillor Gets A New Road Much To The Fury Of Residents

A group of transporters on Monday reportedly staged a protest at Voedsel Tobacco International premises in Marondera demanding to be paid for their services.
The transporters were contracted by the company to ferry tobacco for contracted farmers to the auction floors with the company undertaking to pay them after deliveries.
An insider told NewZimbabwe.com that the transporters are disgruntled over late payments hence the flash protest. Said the source:

A group of transporters was demanding their money. They left after rumours anti-riot police were coming.

In Mashonaland East, Voedsel Tobacco International has contract farmers in areas like Wedza, Macheke, Marondera, and Goromonzi.
The tobacco firm has been struggling to pay even its farmers this season with officials reportedly blaming the novel coronavirus for affecting operations.
Efforts by the publication to get a comment from both the company’s spokesperson Tennyson Hwandi and director Innocent Mahufe were fruitless as their mobile phones were off.

Tobacco Firm Fails To Pay Transporters, Cites 'COVID-19'

Officials at Robert Mugabe (RG) Primary School in <a href="https://www.pindula.co.zw/Marondera">Marondera</a> have denied reports that suggest that the school has hiked school fees saying no change has been effected, yet.
There have been reports that the learning institution was raising fees willy-nilly without even consulting learners’ parents.
Speaking to Pindula News in an interview, one senior official at the school who emphasised anonymity said it was not true that the RG Mugabe school had hiked fees.
Commenting on a document that suggested that the school had raised fees from ZWL$2884 to ZWL$6560, the official:
<blockquote>_Your source is either uninformed or does not understand what’s really going on._
_Those figures are in a proposed budget which we presented before the parents. The figures were rejected.
_There is no way we can hike fees without seeking authority from our principals (the Ministry of Primary and Secondary Education).</blockquote>
The official, however, justified the proposed figures saying the money was essential for the operation of the school. The official added:
The school needs money to run. If we parents fail to pay the money, the learners will not get a quality education and that will have a negative impact on the Maronedera community and Zimbabwe at large.

Pindula News also asked the official to comment on reports that on the school’s budget, some items’ prices were higher than they were in some stores. The official responded:
<blockquote>_It is possible that the figures vary but they were not inflated. If there is an individual who wants to know the truth, they must come and they will be shown our quotations from formal and reputable suppliers._
_A number of factors are considered when we take quotations and these include the quality of the commodity in quesrtion. It is probably cheaper in Store A than in store B but might of lesser quality compare to that in store B so we go for the durable one, even if its price is a little bit higher._</blockquote>
Parents were also concerned that they paid US$15 for a trip but their kids never had any trip. The official said it was true that the school had arranged a trip adding that it was not approved. The official told Pindula News:
<blockquote>_We then cancelled the trip and we’re in the process of reimbursing parents their money._</blockquote>
The government earlier warned schools against raising fees without approval by the parent ministry.
Parents have been lamenting over the state of the economy which they said was making it difficult to raise monies demanded by schools.

RG Mugabe School Denies Fees Hiking Reports

MDC-T’s Marondera Ward 2 councillor Simbarashe Nyahuye has won the mayorship after beating MDC Alliance’s Bornface Tagwireyi 4-3.
The election was to replace Mayor Chengetai Murowa who was part of the five (5) councillors ousted in last week’s recall by the Thokozani Khupe led MDC-T.
Marondera had 12 councillors before the recall with MDC Alliance claiming the majority. After the recall, MDC Alliance and MDC-T had 3 each while ZANU PF had 1.
ZANU PF councillor, Joel Mujaranji of Ward 12 voted for MDC-T’s Nyahuye who eventually won the mayoral race 4-3 against the MDC Alliance candidate.
This is happening when the recently inaugurated Harare Mayor, Jacob Mafume was also recalled which means elections to replace him may be called soon.
MDC Alliance which is led by Nelson Chamisa accuses MDC-T of working with the governing ZANU PF to weaken Chamisa who is regarded the face of opposition in the country.
The leadership crisis in the opposition MDC has been on the rise since the appointment of Nelson Chamisa and Elias Mudzuri as vice presidents in the party.
The crisis worsened with the demise of former Prime Minister, Morgan Tsvangirai who succumbed to cancer in 2018 as Khupe and Chamisa wrangled to succeed the late veteran leader.

Khupe's Candidate Wins Marondera Mayoral Race

The MDC-T led by Thokozani Khupe has recalled five MDC Alliance councillors in Marondera. These are:

<li>Velela Size of Ward 11</li>
<li>Ngwenya Charles of Ward 4</li>
<li>Sirira Wonder of Ward 6</li>
<li>Murova Chengetai of Ward 1</li>
<li>Manyere Misheck of Ward 5</li>
</ul>
This follows the expulsion of 11 Harare councillors, 3 councillors in Beitbridge, including mayor Morgan Ncube, 8 from Bulawayo and also the Gwanda mayor.
The Zimbabwe Electoral Commission (ZEC) has said the elections to fill the vacant seats will be on 5 December.
MDC Alliance spokesperson Fadzayi Mahere said the recalls were illegal and meant to subvert the will of the people. She said:
<blockquote>We believe in the inviolability of people’s votes and strongly condemn the attempt to subvert the will of the people through elite pacts and the imposition of a surrogate opposition.</blockquote>

Khupe Recalls 5 MDC Alliance Councillors In Marondera

Teachers and parents in Marondera, Mashonaland East Province have expressed reservations over plans by the government to reopen schools starting next month amid a rise in confirmed COVID-19 cases.
The Progressive Teachers Union of Zimbabwe (PTUZ) held a consultative meeting with parents at Mbuya Nehanda Hall in the farming town on Wednesday.
The general sentiment was that government should shelve the idea of reopening schools until it can guarantee the safety of children and teachers.
Speaking after the consultative meeting, PTUZ provincial co-ordinator Tapiwa Chengeta said stakeholders want schools to be reopened only after the coronavirus has been tamed. Said Chengeta:
<blockquote>All in all, Mash East parents and teachers said no to reopening. We resolved that since cases are rising, why open schools now and why the hurry?
There are no PPEs [personal protective equipment] in schools and the government has not shown a commitment to save lives and whose children should be sacrificed.
Most of the parents survive on vending, therefore, there is a need for the same government to first open the informal sector or vending so that parents have money to pay their children’s fees and needs.</blockquote>
The Ministry of Primary and Secondary Education has said that schools should reopen starting next month, with June examinations expected to start next week.

Teachers, Parents Urge Govt To Delay Schools Reopening

2 MDC Marondera councillors were reportedly arrested after they broke into their party headquarters and stole some furniture before hiding it at an unknown location, The Standard reports.
The 2, Charles Ngwena from ward 4 and Saizi Vilela of ward 11 were reportedly arrested after a complaint Wellington Makonese, the acting provincial administrator of the Khupe led MDC faction reported them to the police.
The councillors reportedly broke into the party headquarters, removed 47 chairs, two computers and a printer, among other things and replaced the door locks so that Makonese could not access the office.
The arrests were confirmed MDC Alliance provincial spokesperson and Marondera mayor Chengetai Murowa who said this to the publication:
<blockquote>We will be notified on the day to appear in court, they will call us</blockquote>

2 MDC Alliance Marondera Councillors Arrested For Breaking Into Their Party Headquarters And Stealing Furniture And Hiding It

<a href="https://www.pindula.co.zw/MDC_Alliance">MDC Alliance</a> councillors reportedly walked out of a meeting that had been called by the provincial development coordinator. The Councillors were reportedly protesting why a member of the ZRP Internal Security Intelligence was attending the meeting, Newsday reports.
The incident was confirmed by <a href="https://www.pindula.co.zw/Marondera">Marondera</a> Urban Business Association (MUBA) chairperson Carlos Pindirire who said:
<blockquote>The councillors walked out of the meeting after the (PDC) had summoned them to deliberate issues that were raised by the business community. The meeting didn’t go as planned due to the behaviour of the council,</blockquote>

MDC Marondera Councillors Walk Out Of A Govt Meeting

<blockquote>The shooting of live bullets, confirmation of the state’s addiction to violence.
On Sunday the 1st of December, the violent regime unleashed yet another section of the state apparatus in their desperate show of power.
The ZANU-PF led government has for long come to terms with the reality that they are unpopular and too weak to convince the nation hence they have mastered the regrettable art of coercion.
Yesterday was one such day of many others when madness superseded rationality resulting in the unjustified, unnecessary and uncalled for the firing of live bullets.
The people’s President Advocate <a href="https://www.pindula.co.zw/Nelson_Chamisa" rel="noopener noreferrer" target="_blank">Nelson Chamisa</a> was in Marondera for the tree planting day ceremony where he was to plant trees in selected areas within the municipal area.
Just the knowledge that he will be stepping on the <a href="https://www.pindula.co.zw/Marondera" rel="noopener noreferrer" target="_blank">Marondera</a> soil, as usual, sent the state into panic which led to the deployment of several heavily armed police officers.
Shockingly, the activation of the police officers was directed to people who were only armed with tree seedlings to champion a sustainable green environment.
This was the state’s strategy to bar the people’s President from showing leadership to the nation, which he has always done even in the face of state-sponsored multi-faceted prohibitions.
Yesterday’s events led to the firing of live bullets in the direction of President Chamisa. This clearly shows that the idea was to shoot the people’s President, something which deserves utmost condemnation and action.
I have read some lame tweet from the state, which tried to justify and sanitize the evil act. We would like to categorically state that no amount of word weaving will transform such acts of madness into sense.
The fundamental point to note is that lives are precious and peace is priceless. We do not at any point as a nation deserve violence especially from the state which has a responsibility to protect citizens.
Those who were behind the acts must be brought to book because such is unacceptable from professional police officers.
We call upon the police commissioner to provide us with all the names of those who were on duty in Marondera at the particular time.
This will help not only the nation but even the esteemed police services to know individuals with terroristic tendencies in their midst.</blockquote>

As part of President Chamisa’s smart environment agenda he has a declared December of every year a smart-climate and tree-planting month. This to motivate the nation and the country to plant and preserve trees.
The President would like to encourage the people to plant and conserve trees. This would enhance biodiversity and increase the chances of food security in the country while mitigating against the impact of climate change on our country and on the globe.
In order to kick start this declaration, President Chamisa arranged to visit Marondera and plant trees, while raising awareness towards the smart environment agenda.
The President made appropriate arrangements with the local authority to visit a local school that requires the planting of trees, as it has an open expanse of clear land.
However, as morning arrived the school had been barricaded by about 200 heavily armed security personnel that included both uniformed and non-uniformed individuals.
When we arrived at the scene we were informed that there had been orders from on-high to the effect that the event should not be allowed to take place.
Under these circumstances, the Mayor and the local MP arranged to move the event to areas under their control, which the police hard not barricaded or declared interest in.
The police had been fully aware before the event and never said that they were stopping the event because it was an illegal meeting or gathering, they simply said that had then received instructions to prevent tree planting from taking place.
In fact, they were so crude as to search our car for any seeds or seedlings and almost caused a whole situation after mistaking at tissue paper pack for a secret stash of seeds.
The President started by planting trees at Marondera Municipal offices and then proceeded to Dombotombo clinic where the process continued.
The situation started off very calm and quickly unravelled as soon as a group of heavily armed security 
personnel, who were in police uniform arrived.
The personnel were more armed than those experienced in previous public situations. Almost every one of them had at least an AK47 rifle and those that handled the police dogs also carried with them pistols. They had at least 4 police dogs, in each car and had individuals dedicated to tear gas operations.
These state agents did not talk to anyone even when they were attempts to understand their aggressive approach and demeanour.
The shooting of live ammunition, rubber bullets and tear gas began almost as immediately as the vehicles came to a halt.
Let there be no doubt that this event was not a political gathering or a meeting but a tree-planting event to which the President was encouraging our society to take care of mother earth.
The callous and unconscionable behaviour and attitudes towards such an event are troubling and, honestly, unredeemable.
The world must now be awake to the dangers of situations of unhinged, insecure, almost barbaric and 
a savage relationship that these state apparatuses want to have with the country.
A government whose single purpose and excitement is to harm citizens and to cause the most extreme violence is a danger to itself, its neighbours and the national security interests of Zimbabwe and continues to bring shame and unnecessary disrepute to Africa and her heroic people.</blockquote>

Dr Nkululeko Sibanda, the spokesperson of the leader of the opposition MDC, Nelson Chamisa has claimed that the youthful leader was under military attack. He posted on twitter saying:

PICTURE: Marondera Man Rescued From A Well After 5 Hours

Some residents of Marondera town have devised an unusual plan to catch the Zimbabwe United Passenger Company (ZUPCO) bus before it leaves for Harare early in the morning.
The residents who work in Harare, now sleep in the bus as the only ZUPCO bus plying the Marondera-Harare route leaves the town at 6 am.
A commuter who spoke to NewZimbabwe.com, identified as Muchaitei Simboti had this to say:
<blockquote>I stay in Cherutombo suburb, some 5km from the town but working in Harare. There is no public transport where I stay until after 06:00 hours.
So for me to be able to catch the Zupco bus, I have decided to come into town around midnight and sleep in the bus.</blockquote>
Another commuter said he was grateful that the ZUPCO crew had allowed them to sleep in the bus and were able to get to work on time, though it was a bit comfortable. He said:
<blockquote>Although it is a bit uncomfortable to sleep in the bus, the gesture made by Zupco in providing a daily bus service has been helpful as we are now able to somehow budget our salaries even though prices for other basic commodities are on the increase.
We hope the government will be able to intervene as they did in the public transport sector.</blockquote>
A member of the ZUPCO crew who did not reveal his identity said that it is against company policy to allow them to sleep on the bus but it would be inhumane to let them sleep in the cold. He said:
<blockquote>At first we were reluctant to let people sleep in the bus as it is against company policy but a number of commuters would, however come and sleep outside.
With the winter temperatures in this town, we felt it was only humane to allow them to sleep inside the bus and not miss it in the morning.</blockquote>
ZUPCO reintroduced its buses early this year following deadly riots that were caused by a fuel hike which made public transport too expensive for the majority of people.
The ZUPCO buses charge very low fares compared to privately-owned public transport commuter omnibuses.
