Panic gripped Good Hope School in Inyathi, Matabeleland North, last week after a wave of hysteria swept through the institution.
Several learners, mainly girls, reportedly began experiencing intense itching sensations and unexplained behaviour.
School authorities convened an emergency meeting with parents to seek solutions to the unusual incident.
A source told <a href="https://cite.org.zw/author/senzeni/">Senzeni Ncube</a> of CITE that the affected learners were taken to a nearby clinic for examination, but no definitive diagnosis could be established. Said the source:

We’re facing a real dilemma. The students at Good Hope were incessantly scratching their bodies, complaining of relentless itching.
The girls were particularly affected. When we took them to the clinic, they couldn’t identify any underlying cause. We’re at a loss for what to do.
Some students were already screaming before even reaching the school premises.

Another concerned parent narrated how her daughter arrived home exhibiting some strange symptoms before the son was also affected. She said:
<blockquote>
When my daughter arrived home, she was crying uncontrollably. I initially thought they had a quarrel.
Her eyes were bloodshot red, and even her mouth appeared to be bleeding. I resorted to some traditional remedies, which provided temporary relief.
However, the same symptoms soon emerged in my son, who ultimately required hospitalisation. Words fail to capture the severity of the situation.

Ward 23 Councilor Miller Mlilo confirmed the incident, saying health workers at the clinic couldn’t find anything wrong with the learners.
The Director of Communications and Advocacy in the Ministry of Primary and Secondary Education, Taungana Ndoro said they were aware of the incident at the school. He said:

The Ministry is aware of the situation and is collaborating with the Ministry of Health and Child Care, who visited the school and examined the learners. Initial findings suggest no underlying medical condition.
The school was advised to involve the community through the School Development Committee (SDC) and traditional leadership, which they have done.
The Ministry continues to provide psychosocial support to the affected learners.

Panic Grips School As Learners Experience Intense Itching Sensations

Scores of learners ran amok at Kumalo Primary School in Bulawayo last Thursday claiming they were slapped by an invisible hand in the toilet, while some of the learners claimed to have seen a strange snake.
The incident has become a talking point on parents’ WhatsApp group, reported <a href="https://www.bmetro.co.zw/kumalo-primary-school-attacked-by-goblins-sends-pupils-scurrying-for-cover-slapped-by-an-invisible-hand-and-see-strange-snake/">B-Metro</a>.
The publication reported sources at the school as saying most of the affected pupils were between Grades 3 and 5.
It is alleged that a group of learners heard a mysterious voice shouting at them while they were near the toilet. They fled in different directions in hysteria.
It is further claimed that thereafter some of the pupils complained of headaches while some were hallucinating.
A parent who spoke to the publication but refused to be named so as to protect their children from victimisation at the school, said:

My child is doing Grade 5. She told me while she was in the toilet with her friend, they heard a voice forcing them to run outside and report to their class teacher.
Today she refused to go to school claiming that she fears being attacked by the mysterious beings.

Five parents told B-Metro that their children were slapped by an invisible hand causing them to suffer hallucinations.
Another parent claimed that their child saw a snake in the toilet before it vanished inexplicably. Said the parent:

My child told me that he saw a snake while he was in the loo and when he looked at it for the second time it disappeared.
</blockquote>
The School Development Committee chairperson Banele Jumo said he saw messages posted by parents on a WhatsApp group but was yet to get to the school to find out if the claims were true or false.

Learners Flee "Invisible Hand, Strange Snake" At Kumalo Primary School

Learning at Nyele Primary School in Plumtree was suspended on Wednesday afternoon after five learners from different classes started to behave strangely.
One parent whose name cannot be published to protect the minor told <a href="https://cite.org.zw/classes-disrupted-following-mass-hysteria-at-plumtree-school/">CITE</a> that she received a call yesterday from the school alerting her about the condition of her child who is in Grade 6. She said:

The school called me as my child was also affected. They said one learner on Tuesday was complaining about seeing some creature that was beating her, the creature was only visible to her.
So today (Wednesday) she was again complaining about the same thing, unfortunately, today other children were also affected.
My child was also part of those affected and the school called me, when I got to school, my child was not able to speak, and her body was just cold and stiff. Her jaws had also locked.
We tried by all means we could to assist her until she recovered from that situation.
When I asked her what happened she said it started when they were writing their monthly test, she suddenly felt dizzy, stood up and went behind the classroom, and sat down.
She was then blinded by some light and went into a trance.

The child reportedly fell into a trance for the second time after she was taken home.
Both the Matabeleland South Provincial Education Director (PED) Beatrice Manjere and Ministry of Primary and Secondary Education spokesperson Taungana Ndoro said they were yet to receive the report.

Classes Disrupted Following Mass Hysteria At Primary School

Learning and public examinations were disrupted at Chirinda High School in Ward Nine of Mutare South this week due to mysterious occurrences, reported <a href="https://www.manicapost.co.zw/satanism-scare-grips-school/">The Manica Post</a>.
Since last week, Form Four girls were reportedly behaving strangely and there are suspicions that they were initiated into cultism by some teachers at the school.
The affected learners would call out teachers’ names and sometimes menacingly charge toward them.
On Wednesday, lessons were suspended at the school as school authorities were locked in meetings with officials from the Ministry of Primary and Secondary Education and parents of the affected learners.
One of the girls told The Manica Post that the strange happenings started after they attended a birthday party hosted by the headmistress. She said:

One Saturday evening this month, a teacher (name withheld) came and fetched us from our dormitories around 7 PM.
She took us to the headmistress’ residence at the staff quarters within the school premises where she was hosting a birthday party for her daughter.
Cakes, popcorn, biscuits, sweets, and raspberry syrup were served at the party.
The school matron was not around that day and we returned to our dormitories around midnight.

The learner added that after a few days they started “visiting” an unknown place where they would get underwater during the night. She said:
<blockquote>
A lot happened there. We wore gold necklaces and bracelets as well as high-heeled shoes. 
Sometimes we stripped naked before wearing black robes and drinking blood from white glasses.
Eventually, we would turn into mermaid-like creatures.
</blockquote>
The girl said they fall under a spell each time any of the said teachers passes by.
She also said when she looks into the teacher’s eyes, the teacher’s face mysteriously spins into different shapes and forms with a fluorescent glow.
The girl’s sister Sandra Hoko said when the girl was taken to a nearby clinic after an inexplicable seizure, no disease was diagnosed.
Manicaland Provincial Education Director, Edward Shumba said:
<blockquote>
From what I heard, this could be a case of hysteria. It then becomes difficult to differentiate between a person who is possessed or not as there may be no way to authenticate that with a spiritual, supernatural or scientific explanation. As such, it may be difficult to tell what is factual from fictition.
</blockquote>
Meanwhile, Zimbabwe National Traditional Healers’ Association (ZINATHA) president, George Kandiero said the girls are under a spiritual attack adding that it is possible that they are being used by cults for monetary or sexual gains.
