The government says the reconstruction of Mbare Musika, which was devastated by fire, began this November and is expected to be completed within seven months.
Presenting the 2025 National Budget on Thursday, Finance Minister Mthuli Ncube revealed that the newly rebuilt Mbare Musika will provide space for at least 10,000 traders. Said Ncube:

Following the fire outbreak that completely destroyed Mbare Musika, Government in partnership with the private sector, through a PPP arrangement has started the reconstruction process of a modern market facility, capable of accommodating at least 10 000 SME traders.
The reconstruction aims to provide a safer and more organised environment for vendors, while revitalising the area as a thriving commercial hub.
Scheduled to begin in November 2024, the reconstruction is expected to take seven months to complete.

Ncube added that the government, in partnership with the Harare City Council, has provided temporary trading spaces for vendors to continue operating while the reconstruction of Mbare Musika is underway. He said:

During the reconstruction phase, Government through the Harare City Council has provided temporary trading space for vendors, which is located at opposite Carter House to enable traders to continue with their trading operations.
This reconstruction project is part of the Government’s “Building Back Better” initiative, that was launched following the declaration by His Excellency, the President, Dr. E. D Mnangagwa of the fire at Mbare Musika a State of National Disaster.

Ncube added that the reconstruction of Mbare Musika is a vital initiative aimed at strengthening the resilience and efficiency of Zimbabwe’s markets, setting a benchmark for the development of future market infrastructure across the country.

Reconstruction Of Mbare Musika Begins, Set For Completion In 7 Months

The government has said the Mbare Traders Market will be reconstructed to accommodate at least 10,000 traders following a devastating fire that destroyed the structure on the night of October 9, 2024.
During a post-Cabinet media briefing in Harare on Tuesday, October 29, Information, Media and Broadcasting Services Minister Jenfan Muswere said the fire directly impacted 4,695 traders.
He said the government has developed a response plan to assist these traders in restocking their businesses, which includes loans, grants, and other stimulus packages. Said Muswere:

The Government will intervene through a number of initiatives which include the following: provision of immediate relief in the form of livelihood support (safety nets) such as cash transfers, payment of school fees and psychosocial support and child protection; immediate resuscitation of businesses through loans, grants and other stimulus packages to assist traders with restocking of goods; provision of alternative and conducive workspace-the Harare City Council has offered the open space opposite Carter House as an alternative while reconstruction is taking place; economic empowerment programmes that support stakeholders in rebuilding their businesses and promoting economic stability; and upgrading market infrastructure to densification using two or three storey buildings and enhancing emergency response systems to prevent future fire disasters (long term).
An assessment carried out by Government established that a total of 4 695 traders (1 511 stall operators and 3 184 lessees) were directly affected by the disaster, which had a negative bearing on the livelihoods of 23 000 people. A three (3) floor model design is being proposed at the Mbare Musika Traders Market whereby businesses will be classified and accommodated on all the three levels. The reconstructed main market will accommodate at least 10 000 traders.
Work on the reconstruction of the new Mbare Musika Traders Market is expected to take seven (7) months to complete, effective November 2024. The Mbare Musika Traders Market project will serve to pilot the Smart Market concept.
The objective of the Smart Market concept is the enhancement of trading environment through provision of safe and modern facilities.

Reconstructed Mbare Market To Accommodate 10,000 Traders - Government

Action Chakauya, a Harare man accused of starting a fire that destroyed the Mbare Musika Retail Market earlier this month, has been denied bail.
Chakauya (35) appeared before the Mbare Magistrates’ Court on Tuesday afternoon, facing charges of negligently causing serious damage to property under Section 141 of the Criminal Law (Codification and Reform) Act Chapter 9:23.
It is alleged that on October 8, 2024, Chakauya was manning the premises opposite Mbare Musika Retail Market when he set a fire at one of the main entrances to warm himself.
The fire got out of control and razed the Mbare Musika Retail Market. Police investigations led to Chakauya’s arrest.
The value of the destroyed property is estimated at US$5 million. Chakauya is scheduled to appear in court again on November 5, 2024.

Security Guard Accused Of Starting Mbare Musika Fire Denied Bail

President Emmerson Mnangagwa has declared a State of Disaster following the devastating fire at Mbare Traders Market on 8th October 2024.
The blaze, which took hours to extinguish and whose cause remains unknown, has severely affected over 4,000 traders by destroying the entire retail section and parts of the wholesale market.
In a statement issued on 14th October 2024, the Ministry of Local Government and Public Works announced that this disaster declaration will aid in mobilising resources to rebuild the market and support the affected traders. Reads the statement:

His Excellency, the President of the Republic of Zimbabwe, Cde Dr. E.D. Mnangagwa has, in terms of Section 27(1) of the Civil Protection Act [Chapter 10:06], declared A State of Disaster following a destructive fire at the Mbare Traders Market on 8th October 2024.
The unfortunate inferno, which razed down the whole retail section and parts of the wholesale market, affected over 4 000 traders whose livelihoods have been negatively impacted.
The declaration will thus assist in mobilising necessary resources, in cash and kind, to support rebuilding of the market as well as assist affected entrepreneurs resuscitate their businesses.
The nation is advised that Government in collaboration with the private sector and other stakeholders, is working flat out to build back better.

Women Affairs, Community, Small and Medium Enterprises Development Minister Monica Mutsvangwa has said over 1,565 tables were destroyed by a fire at Mbare Musika on Tuesday night.
The blaze devastated stalls and goods for sale, leaving approximately 5,000 traders in distress. It completely destroyed the retail section and damaged parts of the wholesale market.
In a statement on Wednesday, Mutsvangwa said that the government is working with development partners to assist the traders who lost their merchandise in the fire. She said:

This has had a profound impact on the lives of approximately 4 695 traders occupying over 1 565 tables who depend on this market for their primary source of income.

Conflicting theories have emerged regarding the cause of the fire. Witnesses claimed that some vendors selling sweeping brooms in the market were smoking cigarettes, which may have sparked the blaze.
However, others suggest that homeless people who started a fire for warmth could have accidentally ignited nearby stalls.
Harare City Council spokesperson Stanley Gama said on Wednesday that assessments of the damage are ongoing, as firefighters continue to work on clearing the smouldering remnants of the burnt-out stalls.
Meanwhile, George Charamba, the Deputy Chief Secretary in the Office of the President and Cabinet (Presidential Communications), on Thursday said that the fire presents an opportunity to reorganise Zimbabwe’s largest informal market.
Charamba proposed that Mbare Musika should be reorganised to ensure that traders are properly housed.
He suggested implementing point-of-sale (POS) systems linked to the Zimbabwe Revenue Authority (ZIMRA) at each selling booth to integrate Mbare Musika into the national tax system, ensuring that informal traders contribute to the country’s revenue.
Charamba also called for the introduction of proper lighting throughout the market to improve safety and security, as well as to create new opportunities for tax collection by extending trading hours and attracting more customers.
According to Charamba, reorganising Mbare Musika for better access will significantly benefit its vast clientele.
He added that authorities could consider enlisting the military to assist in building new condominiums around the market, pending the demolition of Matapi flats, to pave the way for a new, decent housing programme.

Fire Presents An Opportunity To Reorganise Mbare Musika, Says ED Spokesman

Witnesses of the Mbare Musika fire described it as possibly the worst blaze the area has seen in decades.
The fire, which broke out on Tuesday night, engulfed shacks and market stalls, rapidly spreading through the steel, wood, and plastic structures, as well as flammable materials typical of the shanty suburb.
As the fire raged, people sought to escape and salvage their belongings. Many carried large bags and pushed carts used for transporting goods, while others helped those in need amid the flames and crackling wood.
The scene was marked by shattered glass and crumbling structures, accompanied by sounds of distress and calls for assistance.
The fire reduced shacks to ashes, displacing residents and leaving families homeless, their livelihoods consumed by the flames.
Taurai Nendoro, a witness, told The NewsHawks that the fire began around 9 PM, but the cause remains unknown.
He said:
<blockquote>
We really don’t know what caused the fire, but I have never seen anything like this in Mbare for the past 30 years I have been living here.
We only heard the fire was caused by candlelight, people use candles in this area as we usually don’t have electricity from 6 pm to 6 am.
This area is also overcrowded and any incident of fire can easily spread. There are lots of combustible materials in these dwellings here and that makes this place susceptible to fire outbreaks.

Another Mbare resident Vimbai Dandara said the damage to property and displacement of people was huge.
<blockquote>
It’s a disaster. I don’t even know where I will go tonight; my family has lost everything. We have lost our dwelling, all the goods that we buy and sell to make a living and our belongings.
</blockquote>
Charles Gomo, another witness, said the impact of the fire was severe, highlighting the destruction of property and loss of livelihoods, as well as the trauma and psychological distress faced by those affected. “This is shocking,” he remarked.
The fire brigade, along with other hands-on services from the Harare City Council, responded to the scene as firefighters worked to control the blaze.
Three fire tenders were deployed, but they faced challenges due to water shortages, a large crowd obstructing movement, and difficulties manoeuvring within the densely populated area.
Harare City Council spokesperson Stanley Gama, who was at the scene, said:

This is a critical situation and as you can see the fire brigade is doing all it can to douse the fire. They were here at the earliest time possible and have been battling the blaze for hours.
However, the fire tenders have no capacity to carry adequate water to overcome this blaze immediately. 
They have to keep on going back and forth to fetch water, so it will take time to put the situation under control.
There is also the challenge of crowds and shanty structures here which make it difficult to manoeuvre. 
Police need to help to control crowds and people’s movements to allow firefighters to do their work unimpeded.
Investigations into the fire’s cause will follow after the blaze has been extinguished, and people and goods rescued.
We are doing all we can to quickly ensure this emergency is under control and people are helped.

Latest Prices of Fruits & Vegetables At Mbare Musika

Businesses are now rejecting the $5 note at the backdrop of a spike in the prices of goods and services.
The development also comes after the government had announced plans <a href="https://news.pindula.co.zw/2019/11/22/treasury-to-introduce-larger-denominations-of-banknotes-more-cash/">to introduce new bigger denominations.</a>
We conducted a snap survey which confirmed the development. ZimPricecheck conducted a similar survey on Wednesday and they observed that the $5 note was being rejected mainly in the formal sector. ZimPriceCheck said:
<blockquote>We went out with a wad of $5 ZWL notes to Mbare Musika yesterday and attempted to spend them. Predictably our efforts were in vain as sellers flatly refused to take them. The only shops that were willing to accept these notes were OK, Colcom and Farmer’s shops. Fast food chains unhappily accepted them although the cashier mumbled something about them being useless as she could not give them out as change.</blockquote>
Last year, businesses rejected the $5 bond note which was only differentiated from the incumbent by the words “bond” written across it.
People did not just like that for some reason although the notes looked the same and were worth the same.

LIST: Prices Of Some Vegetables Fall Significantly At Mbare Musika

Mbare Musika has been described as a viable commercial centre where different kinds of commodities can be found in one place. We present below the Harare City Council’s statement.
<blockquote>MBARE Township – Harare’s oldest suburb – has been in existence since 1907.
Every mention of the name reminds one of the country’s largest bus terminus which links the capital city with the country’s outlying areas.
Despite its old age, Mbare exudes life and remains an eventful commercial hub – the city’s economic nerve centre code-named in some circles as the billion-dollar centre in terms of daily financial circulation.
All forms of trade that range from upmarket goods and services to second-hand products exchange hands in Mbare daily. Council has put up markets in Mbare that sell various goods from trinkets, vegetables, farming and mining equipment.
Farmers and retailers constitute the biggest number of traders in Mbare. Upmarket restaurants and hotels form a beeline in Mbare every morning to get fresh produce for the dining table. Fruits and vegetables, such as tomatoes, onions, carrots, cowpeas, cabbages and oranges, dried sugar beans, groundnuts and okra are part of a daily shopping basket in Mbare. The farmers’ market consists of producers selling their products in bulk to retailers and vendors, who repack for reselling. Trading in the Farmers’ Market begins as early as 0400hrs and ends at the break of day to allow individual vendors to trade.
To allow for ease of movement, a curio shop was established close to the fruit and vegetable market. This market is a huge tourist attraction as visitors to Harare jostle to buy the popular Mbira, drum and clay pots among other trinkets such as walking sticks.
Herbalists selling libido-enhancing herbs, luck charms, and love portions are a huge attraction. Jokingly, people generally say, “Whatever you want to buy, you can find it in Mbare”. This is verified in Mbare’s Musika’s hardware market, Siyaso (leave it like that). The market is the township’s industrial hub, made up of indigenous traders and manufacturers of various products ranging from building material and farming equipment.
Mupedzanhamo market, satirically called ‘Kotamai Boutique’ is well known for providing locals with affordable second-hand clothes, usually imported from Mozambique, popularly known as ‘mabhero’ and a flea market, which specializes in new clothes is also available adjacent to Mbare Musika rank, while grocery and other household utensils are being sold at KwaTsiga market.

MDC president Nelson Chamisa today made a surprise visit to MbareMusika, one of Harare’s oldest residential suburbs and home to the largest long-distance bus terminus. He was met by hordes of jubilant supporters who certainly did not expect his visit.
While addressing the crowds, Chamisa said
<blockquote>I understand that this Christmas is one of the most difficult festive seasons that you have ever experienced but I want to assure you that it is the last.</blockquote>
Chamisa had this to say about the reception that he got:
<blockquote>What a massive reception at Mbare Musika!! I am humbled by the overwhelming support from those travelling to various rural homes. I took the time to appreciate their pains and agonies. I spent time with passengers aboard the Rural-bound buses. Zimbabweans you are so warm and loving!</blockquote>
