The minister of Information, Publicity and Broadcasting Services, Senator Monica Mutsvangwa on Sunday said the state broadcaster, the Zimbabwe Broadcasting Corporation (ZBC) will receive funding directly from the Treasury.
Mutsvangwa said the broadcaster last received such funding 20 years ago. Speaking after she and the ministry’s secretary, Nick Mangwana, visited Pockets Hill, the ZBC headquarters in Highlands, Harare, the minister said:
<blockquote>There is now light at the end of the tunnel of your current financial challenges. A lot has already been put in place to address issues like the legacy debt which is an albatross hanging on your necks. It has sapped your capacity to achieve much-needed progress.
We are on the way to refurbish both radio and television studios as we retool and re-equip them with modern technology with utmost urgency. The government through the Office of the President and Cabinet is now at an advanced stage of procuring 20 vehicles for your operations.</blockquote>
She added that the government was putting efforts to revamp ZBC’s furniture, studio equipment, and computers to provide fit for purpose work stations.
ZBC has six radio stations and one television channel with a 24-hour news station in the pipeline but some of the studios are still equipped with outdated equipment.
This is happening when the Broadcasting Authority of Zimbabwe (BAZ) has granted six new free-to-air commercial TV licences a move that is likely to challenge ZBC’s decades of monopoly.

Number plates scarcity might be a thing of the past in the near future after the government through the Infomation, Publicity and Broadcasting services Monica Mutsvangwa said the government is setting aside $1 Million to set up a plant to manufacture the plates locally, The Sunday News reports
Speaking during yesterday’s post cabinet briefing Mutsvangwa said the establishment of the local plant will see the price of number plates falling by 56%:
<blockquote>The Ministers of Transport and Infrastructural Development; and Higher and Tertiary Education, Innovation, Science and Technology Development presented a proposal for the localisation of the production of vehicle number plates and the development of an Integrated National Vehicle Management as previously directed by Cabinet.
Cabinet approved the proposal and attendant budget of US$1 million which will result in the establishment of a plant for the local manufacture of number plates. The selling price of one registration plate will be significantly reduced from the current US$ 80,35 to US$ 45,61. The use of local materials will save the country foreign currency and reduce the import bill by 56 percent, currently the country spends 700 00 Euro annually on importing number plates,</blockquote>
Speaking about the features of the plates, Mutsvangwa said:
<blockquote>The proposed number plates will have enhanced features which supersede the features of the current plates but still maintain compliance to Sadc regulations.
The objective of the project is to design and manufacture registration number plates that meet world design standards that use Radio Frequency Identification (RFID) tagging to optimize the use of road space, reduce non-compliance, enhance toll and parking authentication, combat vehicle crime and fight terrorism</blockquote>
This follows a public outcry over the scarcity of the plates after <a href="https://news.pindula.co.zw/2020/09/15/update-police-to-impound-all-vehicles-without-number-plates/">ZRP released a statement stating that vehicles that are not displaying plates will be impounded</a> and will not be allowed to pass through toll gates.

Govt To Set Up A Number Plate Manufacturing Plant

ZIMRA has reportedly surpassed 2020 quarter 1’s revenue collection target, The Herald reports. The collected revenue netted $14 billion against a target of $12.81 Billion.
This was revealed last night during a post-cabinet briefing when the Information, Publicity and Broadcasting Services Minister Monica Mutsvangwa said:
<blockquote>The Minister of Finance and Economic Development (Professor Mthuli Ncube) reported that revenue collections for the first quarter of 2020 amounted to $14,18 billion, exceeding the targeted revenue of $12,81 billion by 10,67 percent.
That $4,75 billion was spent on employment costs as at 31 March, 2020, against the target of $3,96 billion and that social spending amounted to $1, 25 billion against a target of $1,6 billion.</blockquote>
