We are pleased to announce that the Management at Moto Republik and the Harare City Council and have reached a common ground resolution that will see the modern architectural design at Southern Africa’s first creative hub remain standing. The amicable agreement was made out of court and as part of the resolutions Moto Republik management will work with the Harare City council for the coming 6 months. Last year Moto Republik paid regularization fees and has council-approved plans but in the out-of-court meetings council expressed that shipping containers are a technology that they have not yet fully adopted. Thus Council would like Moto Republik to add modifications to its structures in order for them to resonate with Council bylaws. This 6-month long process will see our technicians and architects coming together with Council engineers to come up with a workable solution that ensures that the structures remain but can exist within the framework of current governing bylaws.
After over 15,000 tweets and over 1,800 signatures on our Change.org petition from the Moto Republik community, the young people of this country saved the creative hub from destruction. “We are inspired by the thousands of young Zimbabweans who spoke up. stood up and added their voice to our ftSaveMotoRepublik campaign,” says Moto Republik co-founder Comrade Sam. “You are the ones who saved Moto Republik” Your contribution to our petition and engagement with elected officials online and offline has resulted in the reversal of the decision by our city elders and a collaborative effort is now the task at hand. There is no doubt in our minds that our Moto Republik community online used social media effectively to not only mobilise local support but as a way to express their concerns and to demand accountability from their elected officials

Moto Republik saved, makes out of court agreement with city of Harare

Moto Republik is still standing! Thank you for the overwhelming support to #SaveMotoRepublik and signing our petition which received over 1,800 signatures in less than 7 days. Your 15 000 tweets plus the petition got a positive response from Local Government Minister Saviour Kasukuwere who made a courtesy call and visited Moto Republik. Minister Kasukuwere said “Govt won’t allow its closure. Important center that is for youth empowerment and creativity. Engage and correct whatever needs correcting.” Yesterday the Mayor of Harare said “NO demolition today. (..) Hoping for a sober, well-considered outcome amid the storm.”
Moto Republik would like to reiterate that regularisation was paid and building plans were approved by city council well before any official enforcement letters were received. On top of this the council’s attempt to demolish Moto republik structures is illegal and by law is required to have a court order to do so. Moto Republik has engaged its lawyers to resolve the dispute with The City of Harare as well as to seek reparations for damages made to its structure. The matter is now before the High Court in Harare and scheduled for a hearing next week.
However we are hoping for an amicable resolution to the matter with the city council and wish to reaffirm our position that Moto Republik is a space for young people in Zimbabwe and is a significant contribution to the development of our capital city. We are committed to finding common ground with council. Demolition is not a solution. Kasukuwere says govt wont allow Moto Republik's closure

Harare City Council is investigating circumstances which led to the pseudo-approval of building plans for Moto Republic – the creative hub located on number 3 Allan Wilson Avenue in Belgravia well after council had issued a demolition order compelling the building owners to stop construction work. 
When the council order was issued no development permit had been issued and the building plans had not been approved by council. Construction work was also not supervised by the city’s building inspectorate. The structure does not comply with the city’s model building bylaws. 

Moto Republic management avoided contacting senior management and chose to deal with lower level supervisors. 
There are however issues that are not in dispute. The land use (Creative Hub – Arts) is permissible in the area on condition it does not infringe on the peace and rights of neighbours and or abutting properties. 

Property owners around the Creative Hub have registered their displeasure with council over the structure which is disturbing the peace and quiet of the neighbourhood because of the huge numbers of people using the premises/road. People using the balcony are snooping on the privacy of the neighbouring properties. 

There is not enough parking space at the premises. 

Freight containers are only allowed for use in the industrial and commercial zones where they are used as storage facilities. 
We have since invited the owners of the property for a discussion on the conditions which they should meet for council to regularise the structure.</blockquote>

City of Harare investigating how Moto Republik got "pseudo-approval," says containers are illegal

Saviour Kasukuwere, Zimbabwe’s Minister of Local Government today responded to the <a href="https://www.change.org/p/minster-saviour-kasukuwere-savemotorepublik">online petition</a> to #SaveMotoRepublik.
The petition came about after Harare City Council officials and the Mayor, insisted that the building was illegal despite Moto Republik management producing all the relevant documents. The officials promised that they would be back to take the structure on Thursday 16 March if the management at Moto Republik did not do it themselves.
Yesterday Kasukuwere took a quick tour of the creative hub, reviewed all of Moto Republik’s approved council plan’s, payments to City Council and resolved to engage the council to resolve the matter.

Minister Saviour Kasukuwere responds to #SaveMotoRepublik online petition

Minister of Local Government, Public Works and National Housing Saviour Kasukuwere has said that he will engage the Mayor of Harare to save creative hub and co-working space Moto Republik. The Minister said that he will appeal to Mayor Bernard Manyeneyeni to save Moto Republik which last almost taken down yesterday, <a href="http://www.pindula.co.zw/news/2017/03/09/moto-republik-saved-mayor-calls-off-tearing-week/" target="_blank">only to be given a temporary reprieve of 7 days after the Mayor stepped in</a>. He cited that the hub is a creative centre that is empowering young people in the country.

Minister Kasukuwere says he will appeal to Mayor  Manyenyeni to save Moto Republik

Creative hub and co-working space Moto Republik has been informed that it is in violation of a 1974 City by-law. They have been given a week to comply with the by-law by removing their creative containers. In the event that they fail to do so the city of Harare will demolish.  The said by-law allows only brick and mortar structures and does not allow containers.
Earlier on today, more than 20 council officials had come to tear down  Moto Republik, despite the fact that they did not have any paperwork with them.  The management at Moto Republik called Mayor Bernard Manyenyeni who showed up[ while the process of tearing down the structure was in progress.   The Mayor stopped the process so that he could investigate the whole issue to get a clearer picture.
