Mpilo Central Hospital has been affected by the current water shortages in Bulawayo and this is forcing relatives of patients admitted at the hospital to bring water in containers.
Members of staff who spoke to <a href="https://cite.org.zw/byos-water-shortages-affect-mpilo-hospital/">CITE</a> on condition of anonymity said the hospital has been experiencing water challenges for the past two weeks. Said a staff member:
<blockquote>
The hospital did not have running water for the past two weeks. There is no water in the maternity ward.
They had said they would call the council, but we are not sure if they have called yet. Some wards now have water, but the pressure is very low.
</blockquote>
Chief Medical Officer for Mpilo Central Hospital Dr. Narcisius Dzvanga told CITE that the hospital depends on the Bulawayo City Council for water and when surrounding suburbs are cut off, they are also affected. He said:
<blockquote>
Mpilo does not have an independent BCC water supply. We are connected with other places, so we are equally affected.
We do have four functional boreholes unfortunately they are not directly connected to the hospital side.
This is because BCC refused to allow us to feed water into them from their systems.
We also have multiple jojo tanks that are strategically positioned around the hospital close to the wards.
We recently got assistance to draw water from them to the higher floors. The only challenge with them is that they fill up either through the bowsers or running water. If we get neither, then they will be empty.

Dr. Dzvanga, however, said the City of Bulawayo has been very consistent in dispatching a bowser whenever there is prolonged water rationing.

Bulawayo Water Crisis Affect Mpilo Central Hospital

Police are investigating a case of baby dumping after a baby girl was found abandoned in a drain in Bulawayo. The baby was taken to Mpilo Hospital. Pindula News presents a police statement on the case:

The ZRP is investigating a case of exposing an infant which occurred in Bulawayo on 28/11/21, where a baby girl was found dumped in a drainage near Gampu Primary School, Mpopoma. The infant was wrapped in a red t-shirt which was in a plastic bag.
Meanwhile, the infant was taken to Mpilo Hospital for further management. Police are appealing for anyone with information to contact any nearest Police station.

Police recently expressed concern over the cases of baby-dumping that have remained unacceptably high in 2021 in spite of an overall decline compared to 2020.
Sally Mugabe Central Hospital clinical director Dr Hopewell Mungani revealed that they receive two or three cases of baby-dumping every month.

Baby Girl Found Dumped In A Drain

The government is reportedly charging US Dollars at the Mpilo Hospital Private wards since September 2020. A memo sent to Pindula by a source shows that one of the country’s largest referral hospitals is changing $60 per day for a 4 bedded ward $ 80 for a 2 bedded ward and $200 per day for a ward with an en-suite.
The memo also charges a deposit of $250 for a minor operation and double that amount for a major operation. Patients in private admission will pay the doctors directly. The hospital also stated that before a patient is admitted, a deposit of ward fees for 5 days has to be paid.

One of the country’s ;agest referal hospitals, Mpilo Hospital is reportedly overwhelmed with hundreds of uncollected bodies, the Daily News reports. Officials from the hospital are reportedly considering pauper burials for some of the bodies according to the publication.
The Hospital’s clinical director, Xolani Ndlovu told the publication that they have 444 bodies and they are now desperate:
<blockquote>We have 444 bodies in the mortuary, among them unclaimed bodies.
We have to consider paupers’ burials. The issue of paupers’ burials is a prolonged process because it involves the courts and other things.</blockquote>
The hospital did not give the exact number of unclaimed bodies and the duration the bodies have been in the morgue to the publication.
Ealier this year Chitungwiza Hospital conducted pauper burials for 31 unclaimed bodies that had been at the hospital for over a year.

Mpilo Hospital Stuck With Hundreds Of Uncollected Bodies - Report

A Mpilo Hospital nurse reportedly tested positive for COVID-19 posthumously, the Chronicle reports. 36-year-old Pretty Mpala from Emakhandeni suburb in Bulawayo was reportedly buried on Friday after she tested positive for the novel Coronavirus.
Mpala who was part of the COVID-19 health frontliners was her family’s breadwinner and her family are struggling to come to terms with her death. Mpala’s aunt spoke to the publication and said:
<blockquote>We are still shocked and in deep pain following the passing of Pretty who was the sole breadwinner in the family. Our hearts are sore and we fear for her traumatized grandmother who raised her following the death of her parents as she is struggling to walk or talk since her death.
Pretty was a caring person and it was not surprising that she eventually became a nurse. She went through a lot of challenges while growing up but managed to shrug off all discouragement and qualified as a nurse.</blockquote>
Commenting about the death of Sister Petty who was the only child of her late parents, Mpilo Hospital CEO DR Solwayo Ngwenya said:
<blockquote>We are extremely saddened that Covid-19 has taken one of our staff members, her premature death is evidence that this disease is deadly. As health workers are at the forefront, we continue to bear the brunt of this virus but we still must work hard and face it while saving lives.
Most of us will be infected in the line of duty and it is sad that one of our self-sacrificing nurses had to lose her life. I would like to commend all those who come to work despite the risks that come with our jobs, this kind of sacrifice is highly commendable.</blockquote>
Mpala survived by her grandmother and her cousins.

Mpilo Hospital Nurse Succumbs To COVID-19

United Bulawayo Hospital has reportedly quarantined 42 nurses and 26 student nurses after a 79-year-old woman succumbed to COVID-19 last week, the Chronicle reports.
Acting chief executive officer Dr Narcacius Dzvanga confirmed the development and said:
<blockquote>We continue to sanitise and check temperatures of everyone who comes into the hospital including health workers. So far more than 42 nurses and 26 student nurses have been quarantined and the figures are likely to increase.</blockquote>
Bulawayo provincial medical director Dr Welcome Mlilo shed more light on the cases and said contact tracing was going on well and the nurses that were quarantined were asymptomatic and the nurses were tested and their results will be captured in national updates.
12 Mpilo Hospital nurses last month tested positive for COVID-19 and 197 hospital staff members were quarantined after the incident.

UBH Quarantines 68 Nurses After A Patient Succumbs To COVID-19

Bulawayo’s biggest referral hospital Mpilo Hospital is running out of COVID-19 test kits, The Chronicle reports. This was revealed by the  Clinical Director and Acting Chief Executive Officer Dr Solwayo Ngwenya who said this to the publication:
<blockquote>We are running out of test kits and we have since appealed to Government to replenish supplies. There is a general shortage of these test kits due to increased demand globally. Everyone is trying to get them and we also need them as a hospital.
We are expecting the return of our staff who are on quarantine. For the first group, their quarantine period ends tomorrow and we’re expecting them at work this week from Thursday and we need test kits to test them.</blockquote>
This came after the <a href="https://news.pindula.co.zw/2020/06/08/mpilo-hospital-sends-197-staff-members-on-self-quarantine/">197 hospital employees were put in isolation</a> after a nurse tested positive for COVID-19.

Mpilo Hospital Running Out Of COVID-19 Test Kits - Report

The Sunday News, a state-run paper has reported that nurses at Mpilo Hospital who had last week embarked on a go-slow over possible exposure to coronavirus are now back at work.
The publication reports that the latest development was revealed by Mpilo clinical director Dr Solwayo Ngwenya who claimed during an interview that the situation at the hospital had normalised. He said:
<blockquote>Our nurses returned to duty on Monday after they had walked out due to fears of Coronavirus last week.
There has been some improvement in the availability of protective gear and some education ways so that the health workers won’t be at risk. Our nurses have come to help us fight this virus.</blockquote>
The Sunday News further reports that EcoSure, a subsidiary of Econet, owned by Dr Strive Masiyiwa, has since offered free PPE for all doctors and nurses who attend duties during the fight against the epidemic, while they have also offered free Vaya transport to both nurses and doctors.
There were reports suggesting that doctors at Wilkins Hospital, a Harare institution designated for infectious diseases last week also downed tools over potential exposure to the novel coronavirus.

Dr Anesu Rangwane the national spokesperson of the Progressive Doctors Association of Zimbabwe (PDAZ) that was formed late last year has said that although the situation has improved in hospitals, it is not yet back to where it must.
Speaking to the Chronicle, a State-run paper, Dr Rangwane said that the health situation in the country has improved because of the new association.
<blockquote>All junior doctors here at Mpilo hospital have taken up their posts and it is a similar situation at UBH and Parirenyatwa Group of Hospitals.</blockquote>
He added that the situation was not back to where it must be although there was some notable positive development.
Rangwane also said that the union also shares the same grievances as those of the Zimbabwe Hospital Doctors Association (ZHDA) where they came from adding that its formation was necessitated by a need to improve the plight of doctors and patients.
Doctors last year embarked on a months-long industrial action over paltry salaries they were receiving and poor working conditions which they said was putting their lives in great danger.
Some doctors returned to work after telecoms business mogul, Dr Strive Masiyiwa offered to pay them salaries, give them transport and training.

"Situation Has Improved In Hospitals But Not Back To Where It Must," - Doctors

A six-year-old boy, Admire Makazhange reportedly jumped off a moving vehicle and sustained a deep cut in the head which eventually killed him.
The Chronicle reports that Admire was aboard a pick-up truck travelling from Tsholotsho to Bulawayo when he jumped off.
He was rushed to Mpilo Central Hospital where he died four days after admission. The incident was confirmed by Matabeleland North police spokesperson Chief Inspector Siphiwe Makonese who said police are still unaware of what really transpired. She said:
<blockquote>The minor was travelling in the back of a pick-up truck with seven other passengers on board from Tsholotsho to Bulawayo. As the driver approached the 40km peg along Bulawayo-Tsholotsho road, he realised through the rearview mirror that the late Admire Makangadze had jumped off the moving vehicle. When he stopped the vehicle to check, he observed that the deceased had sustained a deep cut to the head.
After jumping out of a moving vehicle he sustained a deep cut on the head. He was admitted to Mpilo Hospital where his condition deteriorated and he passed away on January 25, 2020.</blockquote>
Makonese urged members of the public to report all road traffic accidents to the police.

The Ministry of Health and Child Care has extended the interview deadline for nurses to accommodate shortlisted candidates who missed the initial dates for the 2020 intake.
The Ministry posted on Twitter as follows:
<blockquote>Interview dates for shortlisted candidates who missed their interviews on 2 and 3 January 2020. We have noted that some of the shortlisted candidates could not manage to attend the interviews on short notice and due to internet connection problems
It is against this background that the Nursing Directorate has decided to conduct interviews on 9 &amp; 10 January 2020 (Thursday and Friday) for the already shortlisted candidates who did not manage to come for interviews on 2 and 3 January 2020.
The interview venues remain Parirenyatwa &amp; United Bulawayo Hospitals School of Nursing.
Time: 0730 hrs for 0800 hrs.
Shortlisted candidates with not more than two sittings to bring the following:

<li>Original O-level certificates (no result slips)</li>
<li>Birth certificate</li>
<li>Identification card</li>
<li>Marriage certificate where applicable.

Dr Alistair Matambo has been diagnosed with Acute Lymphoblastic Leukaemia(a cancer affecting the bone marrow). He is a 33-year-old medical doctor working in the Department of Oncology, the University of Zimbabwe as a junior registrar. He is married and has 2 children, the younger being 3 months old. He has been attending to and treating cancer patients in Zimbabwe for the past 2 years. Prior to that, he was working at Mutambara Mission Hospital where he attended to thousands of people. He has been a very active volunteer in medical outreach programmes. Alistair is currently receiving chemotherapy at a local hospital in Zimbabwe. The first cycle is expected to be completed on 13 December 2019. His treating haematologist and oncologists have indicated that once he has completed chemotherapy, he should proceed to have a bone marrow transplant to improve his chances of survival. This procedure is not available in Zimbabwe, and the cheapest quotation we have is USD$50000 in India, with costs rising to USD$100000 in other countries like South Africa. This cost excludes travelling expenses. The subtype of the cancer he has is Philadelphia chromosome-positive which has a very poor prognosis(outcome) hence the need for upfront bone marrow transplant to increase the chances of cure.

GoFundMe To Raise US$50K For 33-Year-Old Doctor Diagnosed With Cancer Launched

Striking doctors this Friday met with the government in a bid to find a way to end the prolonged industrial action which has left patients stranded.
Junior, senior and specialist doctors awaiting licensure were all present at today’s meeting where they presented their minimum conditions for them to return to work.
No agreement has been reached as yet as Health and Child Care Minister, Dr Obadiah Moyo is expected to forward the doctors’ requests to “relevant authorities: for approval.
The Herald reports that a joint statement is expected to be released tonight by the Ministry when and or if approval has been made to doctors’ requests.

Doctors Tell Govt Their Minimum Conditions To Return To Work

Zimbabwe Hospital Doctors Association (ZHDA) which represents junior and middle-level doctors has called for fresh talks between the employer and its members saying that the government can meet their demands.
The call comes after the government recently fired 77 doctors for snubbing a disciplinary hearing and for “disobeying a court order” which instructed them to return to work. In a statement, ZHDA said:
<blockquote>Our demands are well within the employer’s means. Government’s luxurious spending; budget surpluses and expensive gatherings show that it has the capacity to capacitate us.</blockquote>
Meanwhile, Community Working Group on Health (CWGH) executive director, Itai Rusike has said that the government should have just opened a new window for negotiations with doctors since dismissing them further cripples the public health sector which has very few doctors already.
Junior and middle-level doctors have been on pay strike since the 3rd of September this year whilst senior doctors and nurses joined the strike only recently.

"The Govt Has The Capacity To Capacitate Us," Doctors Call For Dialogue

Tyson Gumiremhete, a student at the National University of Science and Technology (NUST) in Bulawayo was allegedly killed last week Saturday by his six friends in a fight over a hoo_ker  in the city centre.
It is alleged that the gang met Gumiremhete in the city and went to Stop Over night club at corner 13th Avenue and George Silundika Street where they fought.
A post-mortem report suggests that Gumiremhete died due to trauma, head injury and subdural hematoma (collection of blood outside the brain) sustained when the gang punched and struck him with broken bottles all over his body.
The fight left blood gushing out of Guramhete’s deep cuts all over his body. He was then rushed to Mpilo Central Hospital and was later transferred to the United Bulawayo Hospitals after his condition deteriorated and he died on the same day.
Bulawayo Metropolitan provincial police spokesperson Chief Inspector Precious Simango confirmed the incident that the accused have since been arrested and investigations were still ongoing.
