Violence erupted at the Mugodhi Apostolic Shrine headquarters in Wedza at the weekend as factions clashed over control of the church.
About 20 police officers from Wedza had to be called in to stop the violence involving the Washington Mugodhi followers against those following Aaron Munodawafa, with both parties claiming ownership of the church.
The factional wars started when <a href="https://news.pindula.co.zw/2019/10/17/mugodhi-apostolic-faith-church-leader-has-died/" rel="noopener noreferrer" target="_blank">Tadewu Mugodhi who succumbed to cancer</a> last year was on his death bed.
 Tadewu anointed his son Washington reportedly against the church’s constitution which stipulated that a deputy bishop would replace him in the event that he vacated office. 
During the late Mugodhi’s memorial service, <a href="https://news.pindula.co.zw/2019/12/04/power-wrangle-in-mugodhi-apostolic-church-in-new-turn/" rel="noopener noreferrer" target="_blank">Washington imposed himself on the position and continued to hold the office to date.</a>
Mashonaland East provincial police spokesperson Inspector Simon Chazovachii confirmed the incident, adding that investigations were in progress.
According to the police, on February 11, Munodawafa led his followers to the popular gathering known as Synod, but was denied entry to the shrine by security details hired by Mugodhi.
Munodawafa then took his followers to Matsine Primary School near the shrine where they spent the night.
The following day, about 600 members of the faction then returned to the shrine and forced their way in, resulting in the confrontation.
Both parties filed police reports against each other.

About 20 Police Officers Called To Stop Violence At Mugodhi Church

Power dynamics in the Mugodhi Apostolic Church, one of the largest Apostolic sects in Zimbabwe, have taken a dramatic turn after Tonnie Sigauke who was given the green light to lead the church was locked out of the church premises in Wedza.
The development came to light when the church fronted by Sigauke made a fresh application to be given permission to execute the court judgment. Citing the most recent former church leader, <a href="https://news.pindula.co.zw/2019/10/17/mugodhi-apostolic-faith-church-leader-has-died/">Tandewu Mugodhi who succumbed to cancer in October</a> and his sons among them Innocent and Enock as respondents, Sigauke said:
<blockquote>The respondents are currently denying the applicant’s congregants access to the church’s shrine in Wedza and congregants have had to conduct services outside. 
There are high chances that the applicant will split as the news is all over social media and the country’s most-read newspapers. 
</blockquote>
Reports suggest that on his death bed, Tandewu made it known that he wanted his son Washington to take over the reins of the church, but the announcement did not go well with Sigauke who was Tandewu’s deputy.
Sigauke whom some church members accuse of having altered the church constitution then approached the High Court which declared that Washington’s appointment was unlawful.

Power Wrangle In Mugodhi Apostolic Church In New Turn

Mugodhi Apostolic Faith Church leader, Bishop Tefius Mugodhi has died aged 79. The passing on of the clergyman was confirmed by his spokesperson, Benjamin Mungiriya who said that Mugodhi succumbed to cancer at a local hospital in Harare on Monday. Mungiriya said:
<blockquote>We are saddened by his death. It’s a great loss for us. He is the one who initiated the church’s anti-sanctions call and he would have loved to die after the sanctions are lifted.</blockquote>
Mugodhi took over the church leadership in 2002. Four church leaders had to lead the church since 1961 when his father died since he was too young to lead.
Most recently, the ailing Mugodhi indicated that he would pass the church leadership to his son, Washington, a decision that prompted rebellion from one of his deputies, Tony Sigauke.
The battle for the church leadership is already at the courts.

Mugodhi Apostolic Faith Church Leader Has Died

A News Day article has just reported that more than 10 members of the Mugodhi Apostolic Church at Chitope in Wedza are feared dead after a truck loaded with maize bags swerved off the road and plowed into the congregants who were attending a church service.
The article further reports that both the driver of the truck and church members sustained serious injuries from the accident.
