An employee of Mukuru, a prominent financial services platform, has disappeared along with an amount of US$15,181. The employee, Blessed Chanetsa (23), went missing on January 4, 2024, with the money intended for distribution to clients in Kariba. In a statement seen by Pindula News, the Zimbabwe Republic Police (ZRP) urged anyone with information on his whereabouts to report to the nearest police station. Read the statement:

This is not the first occurrence of such an incident involving Mukuru. In 2022, another employee allegedly vanished after US$11,652 went missing from the company’s outlet at Murambinda Growth Point. The situation came to light when a regional supervisor, Samuel Panganai (31), detected an irregularity and instructed the accused, Jairos Tapota, to address it on October 14, 2022.
However, Tapota failed to report for duty on October 19, prompting the regional supervisor to inform the regional manager, Rodney Rondodzai. Rondodzai then instructed a forensic audit by Fawcett, who discovered that US$8,152 was missing, and an additional US$3,500 could not be located in the safe. As a result, a police report was filed at Murambinda police station to investigate the incident.

Mukuru Employee Disappears With Over US$15,000

Two armed robbers allegedly raided a Mukuru outlet in Entumbane, Bulawayo, and went away with a safe box containing US$10 000.
The incident occurred around 7 AM at koNhliziyo Shopping Centre.
An eyewitness who preferred anonymity told the <a href="https://www.chronicle.co.zw/shots-fired-in-early-morning-raid-robbers-hit-mukuru-outlet-in-bulawayo-and-get-away-with-us10-000/">Chronicle</a> that the robbers used a silver-coloured vehicle as their get-away car. Said the resident:

The robbers arrived when I was coming from buying my stuff in town, I saw them enter Mlungu General Dealers, and minutes later they came out running with a box and went away. Their car had no licence plate.

A worker from Mlungu Dealers said the armed robbers fired shots at the ground and demanded the safe box containing cash at the Mukuru outlet. She said:

The robbers came in fired shots on the ground and demanded money from the safe box. They took the safe box and fled away in a Silver Honda Fit.

On Thursday, 21 September, Police revealed another armed robbery at a Mukuru outlet in Karoi which occurred recently.
The robbers got away with US$2 000 and ZAR 9 400.00 cash as well cellphones from five Mukuru customers.
The robbery incident occurred at the Mukuru booth housed at Muzeziwa General Dealer Shop, Chitindiva Business Centre in Karoi.

Two Robbers Hit Mukuru Outlet In Bulawayo And Get Away With US$10 000

Four armed robbers allegedly pounced on a Mukuru outlet in Karoi recently and went away with US$2 000 and ZAR 9 400.00 cash. The suspects also robbed five Mukuru customers of their cellphones.
In a statement on X (Twitter), ZRP said the robbery incident occurred at the Mukuru booth housed at Muzeziwa General Dealer Shop, Chitindiva Business Centre in Karoi. Police said:

Armed Robbers Raid Mukuru, And Take Away Customer’s Cellphones

Three suspected armed robbers blasted a Mukuru money transfer booth that was in a hardware shop at Maboleni Business Centre, Lower Gweru and stole more than US$27 000 plus over R66 000.
Police confirmed the robbery incident which occurred on Saturday, 22 April via a post on their Twitter page. Reads the post:

Police in Gweru are investigating circumstances surrounding a case of unlawful entry into premises and theft which occurred on 22/04/23 at Maboleni Business Centre, Lower Gweru.
Three unknown suspects armed with unidentified weapons blasted a Mukuru money transfer booth which was located in a hardware shop, before going away with US$27 087.00 and ZAR 66 300.00.
Police recovered one unused Megamite EMEX 70 at the scene. Anyone with information to report at any nearest Police Station.

There has been a spike in robbery cases targeting Mukuru in the past few years.
In 2021, a Mukuru Money Transfer agency in Chegutu was robbed by four armed robbers who got away with US$17 609 and R3 500.
In another robbery incident in 2022, armed robbers raided a cash-in-transit vehicle at Mukuru Money Transfer Agency in Bulawayo before stealing US$100 000 and over R500 000.

Mukuru Booth In Lower Gweru Robbed Of US$27 000, R66 000

Three suspected armed robbers who allegedly robbed a Mukuru outlet in Lower Gweru last month were arrested a few hours after committing the crime.
Tapiwa Zhazha (31), Courage Bongani Moyo (31), and Gift Ncube (24) were intercepted by alert police detectives who acted on a tip-off and arrested them.
Zimbabwe Republic Police (ZRP) spokesperson in Midlands Province, Inspector Emmanuel Mahoko confirmed the arrest of the trio. He said:

Zimbabwe Republic Police confirms the arrest of three armed robbery suspects in connection with a robbery of Mukuru Shop at Maboleni Business Centre in Lower Gweru.
Once again police would like to applaud members of the public who supplied information that led to the arrest of the three suspects.

Allegations are that three suspects confronted Michael Mpofu (23) of Maboleni on 28 March at around 10 AM at his workplace manning Mukuru Shop.
One of the suspects pointed a pistol at Mpofu and demanded cash. The complainant complied and gave the three men all the money in the cash box.
After committing the offence, the suspects fled the scene in a getaway car, a Honda Fit. Said Mahoko:

On the same day at around 8 PM, information was received to the effect that the three suspects had been spotted in Nkayi heading towards Bulawayo.
Police swiftly reacted and arrested the three suspects leading to the recovery of a Star Becheverria Pistol, 9mm calibre, with five rounds of ammunition, R5 010, US$64, and a Samsung Galaxy M13 cell phone.

Armed robberies are on the increase in Zimbabwe as a lot of people now prefer storing value in US dollars often stocked away from formal banking institutions for fear of losing them.
According to the Zimbabwe National Statistics Agency, Zimbabwe recorded 1 120 armed robberies in 2021, compared with 931 in the previous year.
In 2022, in a bid to reduce robberies and rampant gun crime in Zimbabwe, Mnangagwa extended a gun amnesty that allowed Zimbabweans illegally in possession of firearms to surrender them to the police with no questions asked.

Mukuru Booth Armed Robbery Suspects Arrested

Mukuru has launched a drive-thru service in Chisipite, Harare for domestic and international money transfers and plans to launch a similar facility in Bulawayo soon.
The drive-thru is one of the South Africa-based financial services platform’s newest locations in Zimbabwe, joining nine other sites which launched in February 2023.
Marc Carrie-Wilson, country manager for Zimbabwe at Mukuru told <a href="https://thefintechtimes.com/mukuru-launches-tenth-money-transfer-drive-thru-in-zimbabwe/">The Fintech Times</a> that the drive-thru idea proved to be the safest and most convenient option for their customers. He said:

As we increase our footprint in the country, we explored various innovative ideas to push the envelope and challenge the type of locations that we have as a financial services company.
Safety remains a top priority for us, and the drive-thru idea proved to be the safest and most convenient option for our customers.
The Chisipite drive-thru is open from 7 am to 7 pm daily (including public holidays) and comes with a ‘walk-in’ option for customers who wish to register or visit the location on foot.
Out of the ten new locations, Chisipite is the only drive-thru at the moment, but we hope to launch one in Bulawayo in the next phase.

According to the World Bank, remittances to Sub-Saharan Africa grew an estimated 5.2 per cent to US$53billion in 2022, compared with 16.4 per cent the previous year.
Meanwhile, Mukuru has also launched a series of services in the past few months to build a diverse product offering for customers.
The company has partnered with Multichoice to make paying for DStv more convenient.
Mukuru also formed a partnership with Bereka to deliver money transfers directly to customers across Zimbabwe.
Carrie-Wilson also revealed that Mukuru has an ongoing partnership with wholesaler Metro Peech &amp; Browne, who make purchasing groceries, stationery and appliances more convenient for Zimbabweans.

Mukuru Launches Money Transfer "Drive-Thru" In Chisipite

Five suspected armed robbers kidnapped a Mukuru Money Transfer employee at his residence in Mashava on Monday evening and drove him to a supermarket where they stole more than US$20 000 and over R32 000 from a safe.
In a statement posted on Twitter, the Zimbabwe Republic Police (ZRP) said the suspects were armed with an unidentified firearm and using an unregistered grey Toyota vehicle. The Police said:

Police in Masvingo are investigating a case of armed robbery which occurred at a supermarket in Mashava on 13/03/23 at around 1800 hours.
Five unknown suspects, who were armed with an unidentified firearm, while using an unregistered grey Toyota vehicle as a get-away car, attacked a Mukuru money transfer employee at his residence before kidnapping him to his workplace at Mukuru booth located in a supermarket at Balmain Business Centre.
The suspects attacked the supermarket cashier before forcing the complainant to open the safe.
The suspects stole US$20 472 and ZAR32 800 cash. Anyone with information to report at any nearest Police Station.

Robbers Drag Mukuru Employee From His Residence

Six armed men allegedly robbed a Mukuru money transfer outlet in Silobela in Midlands Province on Tuesday at around midday.
Police said the suspects allegedly handcuffed a cashier and security guard manning the booth at gunpoint before they got away with US$1 800, R7 800 and cellphones.
After the robbery, the suspects reportedly sped off in their getaway car, a Toyota Wish.
ZRP spokesperson in Midlands Province, Inspector Emmanuel Mahoko confirmed the incident to the <a href="https://www.chronicle.co.zw/armed-robbers-raid-mukuru-outlet/">Chronicle</a>. He said:

The robbers masqueraded as genuine clients and joined the queue pretending to be waiting for their turn to be served.
Three of them entered the booth and produced pistols before they ordered all clients in the booth to lie down.
</blockquote>
The suspects threatened to shoot the teller before ordering him to surrender all the money and out of fear, he complied.
Insp Mahoko said the robbers then used the security guard’s handcuffs to jointly cuff both the guard and the teller. He added:
They then ransacked the booth and took the money and two cellphones before speeding off in a Toyota Wish towards Nkayi.
He said no arrests had been made and the ZRP is appealing to anyone with information that could lead to the suspects’ arrest to contact any nearest police station.

Armed Robbers Raid Mukuru Outlet, Handcuff Guard And Cashier

A Mukuru shop at Jerera Growth Point in Zaka was robbed of US$10 058 and ZAR35 000 cash by three armed robbers on Monday.
Police said the three suspects robbed a 20-year-old motorist they had hired on the pretext that they wanted to travel from Jerera Growth Point to Devure Business Centre.
The suspects, who were armed with two pistols, robbed the motorist of a cellphone, US$13 cash and a Toyota Passo vehicle which they later used as a getaway car after robbing a Mukuru shop.
In a statement, police said the stolen vehicle was recovered. Police said:

Mukuru Shop Robbed Of US$10 000 And ZAR35 000

The Western Cape High Court has chided financial services company Mukuru for hiring foreigners in positions South Africans can occupy.
Mukuru Group’s subsidiaries, Mukuru Financial Services (MFS) and Mukuru Africa (MA) had applied for a corporate visa to allow it to employ foreigners, but South Africa’s Department of Labour rejected the applications.
MFS wanted permission to hire 100 sales and support consultants, 10 controllers, and five call centre team leaders.
MA applied for 10 customer service representatives, five agents supervisors, seven corridor champions, 10 number and verification officers, 10 regional sales supervisors, 20 verification officers, 23 information officers, and 10 area sales supervisors.
Mukuru argued that it needed suitably qualified employees fluent in the indigenous languages of Zimbabwe, Malawi, and other “relevant” languages.
However, the Department of Labour rejected the applications for the certificate.
It said the skills sought by Mukuru were available in South Africa and that the foreign language requirement was discriminatory to local citizens.
Mukuru then turned to the courts for recourse in a bid to have the department’s decision set aside but Judge Daniel Thulare dismissed the company’s application: He ruled:

The applicants unfairly exclude South African citizens from employment opportunities in South Africa in favour of foreign nationals.
In my view, this constituted unfair discrimination on grounds that included a race, ethnic or social origin, culture, language, and birth.
This unfair discrimination resulted in the applicants being found wanting in respect of private sector development as a strategy of the developmental and transformative state.
They failed to promote economic growth, which includes contributions by foreign nationals but also helps reduce poverty through deliberate actions to defeat the financial exclusion of the poor South African citizens.

MFS had 137 124 workers, of whom 124 were foreigners while MA had a staff complement of 546, of whom 101 were foreigners.

SA Judge Says Mukuru "Unfairly Excluded South Africans From Employment"

Full Text: Mukuru Launches Sending Money Via WhatsApp

Cape Town (24th May, 2017) – Mukuru, a leading remittance company, has donated textbooks to 3 high schools in Zimbabwe namely Churchill Boys High, Harare High and Mufakose High 1.
Mukuru, a South African based company, has embarked on an effort to expand its social responsibility activities to include its remittance destinations such as Zimbabwe and Malawi. School fees payments are one of the most common purposes for remittances and it seems appropriate that a corporate social responsibility program begins with a focus on education. The donation of over 130 books included Mathematics and Computer Science textbooks as well Shona novels.
Mukuru’s Country Representative, Tawanda Chinyani said,” Mukuru is keen to make an impact on communities beyond facilitating easy money transfers. We value growth through learning and felt it was fitting to get involved with supporting educational institutions in Zimbabwe.”
