Five people tragically lost their lives in a Tamuka Luxury Company bus accident in Limpopo Province, South Africa, marking the second such incident involving a cross-border bus.
Violet Mathye, the MEC for Transport and Community Safety in Limpopo confirmed that the bus, en route from Johannesburg to Zimbabwe, overturned along the N1 North near the Nyl Plaza, just outside Mokopane, on Sunday afternoon at approximately 5:30 PM.
The victims included one woman and four men. Said Mathye:

Scores of passengers sustained injuries of varying degrees in the process and have been taken to hospitals in Mokopane.

On Tuesday night, a tragic bus accident near Makhado claimed the lives of 10 Zimbabwean nationals. When the incident occurred, the Mzansi Express bus was en route from Bulawayo to Johannesburg.
More than 30 other passengers sustained injuries, with 12 in serious condition.
According to reports, the bus overturned after the driver, who was reportedly unfamiliar with the area, sped over a roundabout on the N1 highway.
Violet Mathye expressed concern about the rising number of accidents impacting cross-border public transport operators.

Mzansi Express bus company says it is cooperating with law enforcement following a tragic accident involving one of its coaches on Tuesday night in South Africa, which resulted in the deaths of 10 people. Below is the statement issued by the bus company on Wednesday morning:

At about 23:50 hours last night (27 August 2024), our bus Registration Number HT73PGGP travelling from Bulawayo bound for Johannesburg was involved in an accident at the Three Mile Circle (Roundabout) in Makhado, South Africa.
There were 67 passengers on board as well as the bus crew. Following this accident, some passengers tragically lost their lives and several others suffered various degrees of injuries.
South African Emergency services attended to the scene and transported the injured and deceased to Makhado and Elim Hospitals for treatment.
We are currently co-operating with law enforcement agents as they attend to the matter. Next of kin members will be notified when all passengers’ individual identifications have been finalized.
We kindly ask for your patience as law enforcement and health service providers work on treating and identifying all passengers both injured and deceased.
The management of Mzansi Express would like to take the opportunity to reassure Zimbabweans that we too are feeling the nation’s shock and pain at this tragic hour.

Mzansi Express Statement On Fatal Bus Accident In South Africa

Mzansi Express has suspended the driver of one of its buses which was captured on the widely circulated video while dangerously overtaking a haulage truck recently.
The bus almost sideswiped the haulage truck, which was carrying highly flammable gas, while trying to avoid a head-on collision with an oncoming car.
In a statement on Wednesday, 10 January, Mzansi Express management said it regretted the unfortunate incident and apologised to all those who were affected. It said:

We at Mzansi Express regret this unfortunate situation and apologise to all those who were affected by the incident, including our valued clients.
We can confirm that the responsible driver has been suspended pending a thorough investigation to ascertain exactly what transpired.

Early this week, Transport and Infrastructural Development Minister Felix Mhona issued a statement directing that the driver of the bus be prosecuted.
Mhona said the video shows traffic law violations and actions that breach Sections 51, 52, and 53 of the Road Traffic Act (Chapter 13:11), which prohibit driving without due care and attention or reasonable consideration for others, negligent or dangerous driving and reckless driving.
This week, the Zimbabwe Republic Police (ZRP) said 97 people died and 424 were injured in road traffic accidents between 15 and 26 December last year.

Mzansi Express Suspends "Reckless" Driver After Viral Video

The Zimbabwean Embassy in South Africa says cross-border bus operator, Mzansi Express Bus Company has offered to transport Zimbabweans who are able to travel back home at their own expense.
In a statement on Saturday, the Embassy said negotiations with other transporters throughout South Africa are ongoing. The statement read:
<blockquote>Mzansi Express offers transport for self-funded repatriation from SA to Zimbabwe.
Negotiations with other operators throughout South Africa for similar services are ongoing. The information will be made available when necessary agreements are reached.</blockquote>
Earlier on Saturday, the Embassy said Eagle Liner/Intercity Express Bus Company has been engaged as one of the transport service providers tasked with the responsibility to transport Zimbabweans from Johannesburg/ Pretoria to quarantine centres in Beitbridge, Zimbabwe.
The Embassy further said the bus fare will be R600 per person. (Luggage will be charged separately and payable at pickup points on the day of departure).
