A truck driver, Cosmas Kazuzu, is in trouble after he allegedly posed as “Matinyadze” from Vice-President Constantino Chiwenga’s office and threatened Douglas Zimbango, the CEO of Zimbabwe Consolidated Diamond Company (ZCDC), to reinstate the suspended human resources manager, Lavet Wadawarewa.
As reported by <a href="https://www.newsday.co.zw/local-news/article/200034555/trucker-in-trouble-for-name-dropping-chiwenga">NewsDay</a>, Kazuzu is accused of making multiple calls to Zimbango, threatening to expose ZCDC officials’ alleged involvement in diamond theft if the suspension was not lifted.
He appeared before magistrate Tapiwa Banda and was remanded in custody, with a bail application expected this Tuesday.
On August 5, Kazuzu allegedly contacted Zimbango, claiming to have documents incriminating him in theft and fraud involving diamonds at ZCDC.
On August 12, he reportedly sent a text message to Zimbango, threatening him with dismissal if the charges against Wadawarewa were not dropped.
Kazuzu is being represented by lawyer Scott Panashe Mamimine.
It is further alleged that on August 16 Kazuzu contacted Elias Mvere, the chief security officer at ZCDC, identifying himself as Matinyadze from Vice-President Chiwenga’s office to inquire about the suspension of human resources manager Lavet Wadawarewa.
During the conversation, Kazuzu claimed to have a document detailing criminal activities at ZCDC involving the complainant and other senior managers. He threatened to take the document to Chiwenga if the disciplinary charges were not withdrawn.
Kazuzu sent a document titled “Developments @ ZCDC” to Mvere via his mobile phone, instructing that it be forwarded to the complainant.
The document allegedly contained allegations of theft and fraud against the complainant and other senior managers at ZCDC.
Mvere raised a complaint with ZCDC CEO Douglas Zimbango, sharing the document via WhatsApp.
Investigations by the police led to Kazuzu’s arrest.

The Zimbabwe Republic Police has warned members of the public against abusing President Emmerson Mnangagwa and the First Family’s names to steal, defraud or extort money and valuable items from individuals and companies.
In a statement, ZRP Senior Staff Officer (Press and Public Relations] Assistant Commissioner Paul Nyathi warned that the long arm of the law will catch up with those involved in such criminal activities. Reads the statement:

CRIMINAL ACTS BY SUSPECTS ABUSING THE NAME OF HIS EXCELLENCY, PRESIDENT E. D. MNANGAGWA AND THE FIRST FAMILY
The Zimbabwe Republic Police has received numerous reports of criminal acts being committed by suspects who are openly abusing His Excellency, President E. D. Mnangagwa and the First Family’s names in extortion, fraud, theft and other related criminal acts.
The suspects are duping members of the public who include individuals, business people and companies on the pretext that they would have been tasked by the First Family or His Excellency, President E. D. Mnangagwa to fundraise or collect money for various activities which include dinner dances, workshops, land sales and other criminal activities.
The Zimbabwe Republic Police strongly warns these individuals or groups that the law will take its course without fear or favour.
Arrests are being effected and these include some land barons in Harare, Banket and other towns who are openly abusing His Excellency, President E. D. Mnangagwa’s name for personal gain.
Some criminals are extorting and confiscating property which includes vehicles, land and cash for personal aggrandisement while taking advantage of His Excellency, President E.D. Mnangagwa’s name.
The Police will in due course release the names of suspects who have been arrested and some who are on the radar of investigations and facing arrest soon.
The public is urged to report to the Police anyone who approaches and claims to be conducting personal or business activities on behalf of the First Family on telephone number, (0242) 703631 or WhatsApp number, 0712 800 197.

Police Warn Individuals Abusing President Mnangagwa's Name

ZANU PF has warned party members in the habit of using President Emmerson Mnangagwa’s name to aid their criminal activities that they will be punished.
Speaking after the 118th Session of the ZANU PF Central Committee at the party’s headquarters in Harare, party commissar Mike Bimha, who was standing in for the party’s spokesperson, Christopher Mutsvangwa, said:

There are a number of party members who move around threatening members of the public, that is an issue which will end up with tough measures being taken against those people.
</blockquote>
ZANU PF Director-General, Dickson Dzora, said the issue of “name dropping” has become problematic within party structures. Said Dzora:

We look forward to members of the party upholding the position taken by the leadership. It has become a problem within the structures of the party.
The directive is now coming from the top leadership of the party.
Disciplinary measures will be taken against all such members who are in the habit of name dropping.
</blockquote>
Name dropping is the act of trying to impress someone by saying the names of well-known people that you know or have met.
