President Emmerson Mnangagwa has conferred the national hero status on the late retired Director in the President’s Department Ezekiel Tobias Musiiwa Chaunoita.
According to the <a href="https://www.chronicle.co.zw/former-cio-director-chaunoita-declared-national-hero/">Chronicle</a>, Chaunoita also known as Cde Zvenyika died on Saturday, May 4 after battling a long illness.
ZANU PF National Political Commissar, Mike Bimha delivered the national hero status message at Chaunoita’s home in Harare. Said Bimha:

His Excellency, the President and First Secretary of Zanu PF, Cde Dr E.D. Mnangagwa has conferred a National Hero Status to the late Cde Ezekiel Tobias Musiiwa Chaunoita who died on 4 May 2024. Mourners are gathered at House Number 19B Selsey Road, Waterfalls, Harare.
The late Cde Ezekiel Tobias Musiiwa Chaunoita will be interred at the National Heroes Acre, Harare, at a date to be announced.
I shall be most grateful if you would make the usual arrangements for his burial and payment of benefits to his family. He is from Harare Province.

In a letter dated 07 May 2024, addressed to the Chief Secretary to the President and Cabinet Martin Rushwaya, ZANU PF Secretary for Administration, Obert Mpofu, said:

Former CIO Director Chaunoita Declared National Hero

The late prominent businessman Ben Mucheche has been declared a national hero, reported <a href="https://www.chronicle.co.zw/cde-ben-mucheche-declared-national-hero/">Chronicle</a>.
Mucheche died of heart failure at his farm in Beatrice on 14 June at the age of 96.
The conferment of national hero status was announced on Sunday night by ZANU PF national chairperson Oppah Muchinguri-Kashiri, who is also Defence and War Veterans Affairs Minister, at the Mucheche family home. She said:

We have been sent by His Excellency, President Mnangagwa to convey his deepest condolences to the Mucheche family.
He wanted us to tell you that Cde Mucheche was not only your son but a son of the whole nation who was hard-working, trustworthy and full of love for everyone.
After considering his contribution to the struggle, the President saw it fit to declare him a National Hero.

His son, Ben Mucheche Junior, thanked the Government for recognising their father’s hard work and contribution to the country.
Mucheche was the founder of the Indigenous Business Development Centre and owned the now-defunct Mucheche bus company.
A teacher by profession, Mucheche was the first person to establish a taxi rank at Machipisa Shopping Centre in Highfield, Harare, in 1956.
He provided transport to ferry nationalists to meetings and also helped to transport food, clothes and telephones for communication during the liberation struggle.
In 1963, he gave his vehicle for use by the leadership of ZAPU. The vehicle was seized by the Rhodesian government after the party was banned and sold at an auction.
Mucheche was at one time detained by the police for transporting recruited freedom fighters to Mozambique but he resisted arrest.
After independence, Mucheche offered his premises in Southerton to house all vehicles belonging to ZANU PF since the party had no garage to keep them.
He was the first black person to sit on the Reserve Bank board between 1975 and 1986.
Mucheche led the African Business Organisation, now the Zimbabwe National Chamber of Commerce (ZNCC), from 1973 to 1986.
He was also the chairperson of the Zimbabwe Rural Transport Organisation between 1976 and 2002.
Mucheche is survived by four wives, 24 children, 27 grandchildren and 57 great-grandchildren.

Ben Mucheche Declared National Hero

President Emmerson Mnangagwa on Saturday conferred national hero status on Brigadier-General Epmarcus Walter Kanhanga (Rtd), who died on Thursday.
Brig-Gen Kanhanga died at his rural Guruve home in Mashonaland Central at the age of 73.
The conferment of hero status on Brig-Gen Kanhanga was announced by the Chief Secretary to the President and Cabinet, Mischeck Sibanda. He said in a statement:

His Excellency the President, Dr ED Mnangagwa, today announced the conferment of National Hero Status on the late Brigadier-General Epmarcus Walter Kanhanga (wartime name Cde Charles Munyoro), who passed on at his Guruve home in the early hours of Thursday, 2nd February 2023.
This decision by the party to honor the late Brigadier-General in this very special way is in recognition of his wartime role as a freedom fighter; his loyal and diligent service to the country and region as a senior officer of the Zimbabwe Defence Forces, ZDF; his role as a Deputy Minister of Government; as a Member of Parliament; as a leader in the corporate world, and as a consistent cadre of the ruling ZANU PF party.

Brig-Gen Kanhanga is expected to be buried at the National Heroes’ Acre at a date yet to be announced.

Brig-Gen Kanhanga Declared National Hero

The late Minister of State for Harare Metropolitan Province and Devolution, Oliver Chidawu, has been declared a national hero.
President Emmerson Mnangagwa visited the Chidawu family home in Harare on Wednesday night where he announced that ZANU PF had unanimously agreed that Chidawu be buried at the National Heroes Acre at a date to be announced after consultations with the family. He said:

As the ZANU PF party leadership, we have unanimously declared him a national hero because of his commitment to serve the nation and party in different capacities. He was one of us.
He will be buried at the National Heroes Acre because of his contributions to the development of the country.
People should be remembered for their work ethics and patriotism toward the development of the country.
</blockquote>
Mnangagwa was accompanied by Vice President Constantino Chiwenga, Secretary for Security Lovemore Matuke and his deputy Tendai Chirau, Secretary for War Veterans Douglas Mahiya, Committee Member in the Politburo Omega Hungwe and Deputy Secretary for Youth Affairs John Paradza, among other ZANU PF officials.
Chidawu collapsed and died at his home on Tuesday at the age of 66.
He is survived by his wife Spiwe and two children Dadirai and Ropafadzo.

Oliver Chidawu Declared National Hero

The late former ZANU PF secretary for information and publicity, Simon Khaya Moyo, has been declared a national hero.
However, burial arrangements are yet to be publicised.
Moyo (76), succumbed to cancer on Sunday at Bulawayo’s <a href="https://www.pindula.co.zw/Mater_Dei_Hospital">Mater Dei Hospital </a>after a long battle with the disease.
Speaking on Monday night after touching down at the Robert Gabriel Mugabe International Airport from a trade conference held in Durban, South Africa, President Emmerson Mnangagwa said:
<blockquote>
My brother Cde SK, I first met him in 1979 at Lancaster. At that time, he was the assistant to the late Vice President Joshua Nkomo. I don’t think he had any adult life outside the struggle.
From Makerere University, he joined the struggle on the ZAPU side and he has been with us throughout. He then progressed in the party structures in ZAPU.
He reached the Central Committee level and in 1987, when we merged ZANU and ZAPU, again he was in the Central Committee.
Down the line, he was promoted to be a member of the Politburo, under former President Mugabe.
He has also held several positions in Government, first in the public service, as a civil servant and later as a minister.
So I don’t know of any of his life outside politics, outside the revolution and outside serving the country, or in the public sector.
We have indeed lost a committed, articulate Cde among us, and we feel poorer.

Simon Khaya Moyo Declared National Hero

The late Brigadier-General Collin Moyo (Retired) has been declared a national.
Announcing this development at Brig-Gen Moyo (Rtd)’s house in Harare on Sunday, Defence and War Veterans Affairs Minister Oppah Muchinguri-Kashiri confirmed that the decorated military commander did not succumb to COVID-19. She said:
<blockquote>He has been declared a National Hero. We cannot tell you when he will be buried. We know that he did not die as a result of Covid-19. His burial is different from those who were Covid-19 positive.
We are expected to have controlled numbers at the burial, so the Ministry of Health and Child Care and the Ministry of Home Affairs and Cultural Heritage will give us advice.</blockquote>
Brig-Gen Moyo (Rtd) died on Friday at the Haematology Centre in Harare aged 66.
He is survived by his wife and six children.

Brig-Gen Moyo Declared National Hero

The late Dr Timothy Stamps has been declared a national hero. Dr Stamps died on Sunday after succumbing to a lung infection on Sunday at the Borrowdale Trauma Centre in Harare.
The message was delivered to his family by Zanu PF Politburo members, Obert Mpofu, Simon Khaya Moyo and Dr David Parirenyatwa at his home at plot number 6 Weston Road off Hatcliffe in Harare. Dr Stamps’ widow, Cindy and eldest son, Kenyon welcomed the decision and are consulting as a family and will inform the government on the way forward regarding burial arrangements.
Dr Stamps is survived wife, Cindy, three children and four grand children.

Speaking to The Herald, Zanu-PF Politburo member Josiah Hungwe confirmed that Shuvai Mahofa’s family had requested to have her burial moved from Sunday  to Wednesday so that President Robert Mugabe could preside over the proceedings.
Said Hungwe:
<blockquote>Initially the date had been set for Sunday, but the family asked that it be changed. We don’t have the power to oppose the wishes of the Mahofa family and we will stand guided by what they want. They want His Excellency President Mugabe to preside over her burial at the National Heroes Acre.</blockquote>
Zanu-PF secretary for Administration Ignatius Chombo said that Government will dispatch two helicopters that will ferry Mahofa’s body and some of her relatives to Harare.

Shuvai Mahofa's family requests burial to be moved to Wednesday

NewsDay reports that indications are that the late Justice Simpson Mutambanengwe will not be accorded heroes status by the Zanu-PF government despite his liberation struggle credentials.
Speaking to NewsDay, family spokesperson and son of the late judge, Tumai Mutambanengwe, said the body of his father and war veteran was expected in Harare last night and they are going to bury him at their family home in Mutare over the weekend.
Zanu PF secretary for administration and Home Affairs minister Ignatius Chombo said that he was unaware of Manicaland provincial leadership’s recommendation to accord Mutambanengwe  national hero status.  Despite revealing to NewsDay on Monday that his province had recommended national heroes status for Mutambanengwe, acting Zanu PF Manicaland chairperson Joseph Mujati was last night no longer eager to talk about the issue as he refused to comment.

Justice Mutambanengwe denied heroes status despite his liberation struggle credentials

The late Brigadier General James Jotham Murozvi who collapsed and died at his home in Harare on Thursday last week, has been declared a national hero.
A delegation comprising Home Affairs Minister Dr Ignatius Chombo, Defence Minister Dr Sydney Sekeramayi, War Veterans Minister Retired Colonel Tshinga Dube, Commander Defence Forces General Constantino Chiwenga and Zimbabwe National Army Commander Lieutenant-General Philip Valerio Sibanda visited the Murozvi family to deliver the hero status message from President Robert Mugabe.
Brigadier General Murozvi, whose Chimurenga name was Cde James Tichatonga, was suffering from diabetes for some time. He survived by his wife, Group Captain Joice Murozvi and four children. He will be buried on Wednesday at the National Heroes Acre. Mourners are gathered at House Number 78 Drew Drive, Grange, Harare.

Brigadier General James Jotham Murozvi declared national hero, burial Wednesday

Former Mashonaland West Provincial Governor and Resident Minister Peter Chanetsa, who died on Monday morning due to a heart failure at Parirenyatwa Group of Hospitals, has been declared a national hero.
He will be buried tomorrow at the National Heroes Acre. His body will be taken to Chinhoyi this morning before being brought back in the evening ahead of burial tomorrow. Acting President Emmerson Mnangagwa last night told mourners at the Chanetsa family’s Borrowdale home that the Zanu-PF Politburo had agreed to accord Chanetsa national hero status. He said the announcement of the hero status had been delayed because many Politburo members were still on holiday.
