The Zimbabwe Gems, the country’s women’s netball team, have received $20,000 each from the Ministry of Youth, Sport, Arts and Recreation. The money was awarded the team members for the performance in Liverpool, UK.
Minister Kirsty Coventry made the announcement on Saturday, 3 August at a luncheon to celebrate the victory. The luncheon was attended by the First Lady Auxillia Mnangagwa.
The Zimbabwe netball team finished eighth at the Netball World Cup in July.

Zimbabwe has so far won 2 games and lost 2.

These women had to endure gruelling qualifiers with little support or incentive. Their last trip to Zambia, they had to use a chicken bus, some had swollen feet from the travel. The qualified against all odds.
They have been in camp for the past 3 months preparing for the world cup. The dream of every kid playing netball today. Some of these women are breadwinners. And they have spent 3 months in camp with no remuneration whatsoever.
As we speak, the ladies are in the UK ready to take on the world. As far as we know, they have been promised only a paltry ZWD$30/day for this. Which means they will probably have ZWD$300 when they come back. As far as we know, they have been surviving on well-wisher donations.
PLAN gave them $100 each. Last weekend they were at a barbecue in Manchester and they got about £50 each from  well-wishers. All in all, all they have is less than $400. Econet donated good quality uniforms and tracksuits.
Deputy Minister Simbanegavi is in the UK now and there has not been any indication that the government will do anything for these ladies. This is a World Cup. There is no bigger platform to market Zimbabwe. Smiles of a well-paid team will do it. Reward The Gems!</blockquote>

FULL THREAD: Team Pachedu Implores Govt To Financially Reward Zim Netball Team

The  Zimbabwe senior netball squad, Zimbabwe Gems qualified for the Netball World Cup for the first time after winning all but one of their key games in Lusaka, Zambia.
The Netball World Cup will be held from July 12-21 at the Echo Arena in Liverpool, England. Zimbabwe came second behind Uganda having lost 52-66 to the Ugandans in their last game on Saturday although they had already sealed their qualification.
For the African title, Zimbabwe came third behind winners Uganda and second placed Malawi who qualified for the World Cup by virtue of their sixth place ranking on the International Netball Federation rankings going into the championship. Zimbabwe is one of the nine teams that have qualified for the world cup alongside Uganda, Australia, New Zealand, Jamaica, South Africa, Malawi, Scotland, Northern Ireland, Samoa , Fiji and hosts England.
