Zimbabwe Gems emerged victorious in a highly anticipated match against Barbados during the 13th-place playoffs of the 2023 Netball World Cup. The game took place on Friday at the Cape Town International Convention Centre in South Africa.
Zimbabwe entered the tournament with the aim of surpassing their previous accomplishment of attaining the 8th position in the 2019 edition held in Liverpool. With aspirations of securing a spot within the top four, the Gems embarked on their World Cup campaign. However, their aspirations and performance did not align, rendering their goal an unattainable mission.
The Gems lost all of their group matches, but they improved in the subsequent rounds, which granted them an opportunity to contend for the 13th position. Their opponent in this crucial match was Barbados, a team they had previously suffered defeat against during the group stages. Nevertheless, the Zimbabwean team demonstrated resilience and determination, leaving their setbacks in the past.
In a remarkable display of skill and determination, the Gems exacted sweet revenge upon Barbados, securing an impressive victory with a final score of 75 – 48. This triumph marked Zimbabwe’s final encounter at the 2023 Netball World Cup, concluding their journey in the tournament on a high note. They bow out with their heads up.

Netball World Cup 2023: Zimbabwe Gems Beat Barbados To Finish Strong

The Zimbabwe Netball World Cup team has received very little financial support from Zimbabweans who are based in the United Kingdom.
This was revealed by UK-Zim Netball Association chairperson, Barbra Siyachitema who said that the organisation has managed to raise only £350.
Speaking during an interview with The Herald, Siyachitema said:
<blockquote>UK-Zim Netball Association did not raise much money because there was so much resistance from the Zimbabwean community. It is so little that we do not know how to share it among the girls.
The support was just poor. This is unfortunate because these 20 girls and their technical team deserve more.
I started this because of my love for netball and understanding what these girls are going through. We have only managed to raise £350 and it will be nice if the Diaspora community contribute towards the fund so that we give the girls something.</blockquote>
UK-Zimbabwe Netball Association was formed when the Zimbabwe Gems qualified for the Vitality Netball World Cup currently underway in Liverpool, United Kingdom.
Its goal was to help the Government and the Zimbabwean corporate sector in fund-raising for the team.

With the Zimbabwe Gems taking on Sri Lanka at the M and S Bank Arena this Friday, here are the World’s best 16 Netball Teams’ Captains. Among them is Zimbabwe represented by captain Perpetua Siyachitema.
