The MDC-led by Douglas Mwonzora has suspended seven senior members among them Elias Mudzuri pending investigations and disciplinary action by the party.
In a statement, MDC national chairperson Solomon Chikohwero said the seven are facing serious disciplinary charges, which he however, did not specify. Read the statement:

4. Mr. John Nyika – Chairperson Masvingo Province

These members are facing serious disciplinary charges and their suspensions are in terms of Clause 9.1.2.3 of the Party’s Constitution.
The hearings will be conducted in terms of the MDC Constitution and their rights as accused persons will be respected.

MDC Suspends Seven Senior Officials

MDC-T President <a href="https://www.pindula.co.zw/Douglas_Mwonzora">Douglas Mwonzora</a> has dismissed claims that the party carried out a dubious nomination process ahead of the upcoming congress.  
Speaking during a press conference held at the party headquarters after the party secretary for programs and business Norest Marara raised alarm about the nomination, Mwonzora said the process was done in a transparent manner.
Marara declared his interest to run for the party’s top position challenging the incumbent Douglas Mwonzora.
However, Mwonzora claimed no one contested his position.
Marara insists that due process was not followed and therefore approached the court.
Speaking during the press conference Mwonzora said his party was leading by example as far as internal democracy is concerned. <a href="https://openparly.com/mdc-t-congress-the-nomination-process-was-transparent-says-mwonzora/">Open Parly</a> quotes him as saying:

We have done our nominations in a transparent and robust way.
The MDC is an example of a thriving internal democracy, every position was up for grabs and everybody who wanted any position was free to contest it.
And people did canvas support for the position that they wanted.
Congress is preceded by the nomination process and the nomination process is preceded by setting of the rules governing the internal processes.
Before Congress, we develop rules for the elections these rules are developed by the elections directorate and then presented by the National Council.

Mwonzora said he was glad that Marara took the matter to the High Court where it was dismissed as being not urgent. He said:
<blockquote>
We are very happy that Mr Marara took his case to court where people who are not us presided over it.
</blockquote>
He added that no one was stopped from contesting the elections saying he was clear that his position was up for grabs and, “I am the only opposition leader who dares to do that.”
Marara is one of the MDC-T candidates who lost in the 26 March by-elections. He is said to have openly told the executive in one meeting that the party performed dismally because Mwonzora was not sellable to the people.

Mwonzora Dismisses Claims That MDC-T's Nomination Process Was Unprocedural

MDC-T leader, Douglas Mwonzora’s spokesperson, Lloyd Damba, said that the secretary for projects Norest Marara is not yet eligible to contest the party presidency.
This follows reports that Marara wants to challenge the current MDC-T leader Douglas Mwonzora at the congress set to be held before the 2023 general elections.
But speaking during an interview with <a href="https://www.newsday.co.zw/local-news/article/200003530/interview-mdc-is-too-broke-to-hold-an-elective-congress">NewsDay’s</a> Taurai Mangudhla, Damba said Marara was not part of the 2014 structures but merely a friend of the late MDC-T leader Morgan Tsvangirai. He said:

It has never been our culture for any single individual to nominate themselves to any particular position in the party.
I saw on social media that he declared his candidature for the position of party president, but I doubt if he is qualified to stand for that position or any other position in the national standing committee because one needs to have been in the party structures for a continuous period of five years.
The current structures are those built on the remnants of the 2014 congress structures which we used at our extraordinary congress on December 27, 2020, but Marara was not part of these structures, only that he was sympathetic to the MDC through his friendship with our late leader Morgan Tsvangirai.
Now if friendship with our late leader is the constitutional qualifying factor then definitely he is qualified.

Asked about when Marara officially became an MDC-T party member, Damba said:
<blockquote>
It was only in October 2020 that he volunteered to join president Mwonzora’s campaign team which was called the Donkies and that is how many people, myself included, got to know him in political circles.
From the records he has produced on social media for everyone to see, he only applied to be a member on August 16, 2022, and he paid his backdated subscriptions.
On January 10, 2022, when he wanted to be allowed by his Harare Central District to contest for Parliament he had to pay a candidate fee to the National Elections Directorate of US$100.
Now if you go by his narrative, then it means he is not even supposed to be spoken of as a candidate because he is not qualified.
One can only become a member after he has been admitted into the party and his admittance into the party as per his records is August 16, 2022, and for the past 22 years, he has not been a member but a sympathiser.
We will be happy to invite you, members of the media, to inspect the records because they are still in our vaults and the same was used for the 2020 extraordinary congress.

Norest Marara Ineligible To Contest MDC-T Presidency - Mwonzora

Former MDC-T leader Morgan Tsvangirai’s close ally, Norest Marara, has become the first person to openly challenge Douglas Mwonzora for the party presidency ahead of the congress.
Marara reportedly facilitated the purchase of two of Tsvangirai’s vehicles in 2011 and was arrested on charges of smuggling them through Beitbridge Border Post.
He is currently the party’s secretary for special projects and party business in the national executive as well as head of finance and administration.
However, the MDC-T standing committee is reportedly expected to reject Marara’s candidature at its meeting on Wednesday.
<a href="https://www.newsday.co.zw/local-news/article/200003173/norest-headache-for-mwonzora">NewsDay</a> reported sources in Mwonzora’s camp as saying that there will be an attempt to block Marara’s candidature in the standing committee. Said the sources:

The party failed to suspend Marara, but it is now looking forward to barring him from contesting for the presidency. Our president, Mwonzora fears defeat by the popular Marara. Marara is popular with the structures.
</blockquote>
In a statement, the party’s Harare provincial spokesperson Collen Chavengwa said Marara did not qualify to contest for the MDC presidency on the grounds that he “has never served in any capacity in any of the 24 districts in Harare”.
Marara told NewsDay on Sunday that he had served the party for more than five years. He added:
<blockquote>
I am also the founding member of the party and, therefore, I meet the constitutionally-required criteria. I have served the party for more than five years.

Marara contested the Harare Central constituency as the MDC Alliance candidate in the 26 March by-elections but lost to CCC’s Murisi Zvizwai.
