A 28-year-old female nurse stationed at Parirenyatwa Group of Hospitals in Harare was recently arraigned on bribery allegations before the Harare Magistrates’ Court.
The court remanded Memory Mukura out of custody to the 16th of May 2024.
Prosecutors allege that Mukura approached two General Nurses trainees at the Gwanda Multi-Disciplinary School (GMDS) and offered to help them pass their examinations.
The two complainants sat for their final exams on the 7th and 8th of March 2024.
While the trainees were waiting for their results, Mukura informed them that they had failed, but her uncle at the Nurses Council of Zimbabwe (NCZ) was going to “ensure that they score favourable marks” for a fee of US$500 each.
The complainants promptly alerted the authorities at GMDS and they reported the matter to the Nurses’ Council of Zimbabwe (NCZ).
A report was made to the Zimbabwe Anti-Corruption Commission (ZACC) by the NCZ and they set a trap for Mukura.
She was arrested on the 7th of May 2024, after allegedly receiving US$500 from the complainants.

Parirenyatwa Hospital Nurse Arrested For Demanding Bribes

A nurse from Ngundu, Chivi District, Masvingo Province has been sentenced to 18 years in prison for the heinous murder of his girlfriend’s baby during delivery.
According to <a href="https://masvingomirror.com/ngundu-nurse-kills-girlfriends-baby-during-delivery/">The Mirror</a>, after assisting with the delivery, the nurse, Ngonidzashe Mugabe took the newborn’s life and callously disposed of the body.
He threw the infant into a pit latrine, showing a complete lack of compassion or remorse. High Court Judge, Justice Garainesu Mawadze, expressed his shock at the brutality of the crime.
Despite Mugabe’s plea of not guilty, the overwhelming evidence presented during the trial led Justice Mawadze to deliver a stern sentence. On Friday, March 15, Mugabe was found guilty and sentenced to 18 years behind bars.
Prosecutors revealed that Mugabe and Diana Rose Mudzingwa (32) of Waterfalls, Harare were in an intimate relationship, and Mudzingwa was pregnant.
Mugabe, who worked at Ngundu Clinic, lured Mudzingwa to give birth there after she fell into labour. However, instead of taking her to the clinic, he led her to a rented location.
In a horrifying turn of events, Mudzingwa, in the throes of labour pain, witnessed Mugabe’s cruel actions. The nurse strangled the newborn, stuffed its nose and mouth with cotton, and then drowned it headfirst in a bucket. Mugabe callously wrapped the lifeless body in a plastic bag and left the room.
Mugabe later disposed of the tiny body in a pit latrine. Callously, Mugabe proceeded to inject Mudzingwa to stop her bleeding and resumed his duties at the clinic as if nothing had happened. The incident happened on January 24, 2023.
Mudzingwa reported the matter at Ngundu Police Station leading to Mugabe’s arrest. He was taken for indications and he showed the Police where he had dumped the body.
Justice Mawadze said there was no postmortem because the body was in a state of decomposition when it reached Masvingo Provincial Hospital and he relied on Mudzingwa’s testimony and circumstantial evidence to reach his conclusion.
In a candid admission, Mugabe clarified that his relationship with Mudzingwa was purely sexual, devoid of any marriage prospects due to his existing commitment to his wife and five children.
Furthermore, Mugabe said Mudzingwa had candidly revealed her involvement in a sexual relationship with another man when she became pregnant.
Mugabe claimed that his subsequent actions were driven by a conflicted state of mind, fueled by the fear of jeopardizing his job and family. The revelation that his girlfriend had given birth in his room weighed heavily on him, leading to his confusion and apprehension.
Delivering the judgement, Justice Mawadze emphasized Mugabe’s betrayal of his professional duties as a nurse and the gravity of his actions. He condemned Mugabe’s deceitful behaviour and disregard for human life. He said:

Judging by the role of a nurse and a midwife you know the importance of a postmortem. If you had alerted the Police a postmortem would have been conducted and the cause of death known.
You didn’t want a postmortem and that is consistent with foul play. There is no confusion. You had the clarity of mind to go and illegally take an injection from the clinic.
What destroys your story is that you are denying that there was foul play but you are agreeing that Mudzingwa accused you of killing her child.
What did you do? You were supposed to report to the Police who would investigate. Instead, you nicodemusly wrapped the body in a plastic bag and walked two kilometres and dumped the baby.

Married Ngundu Nurse Kills Girlfriend’s Baby During Delivery

A 52-year-old Zimbabwean-born nurse, Dorcas Gwata, has been named the “best nurse” in the UK.
Gwata, who works as a psychiatric liaison nurse at St Mary’s Hospital A&amp;E, won the Best Nurse category in recognition of her work supporting young people involved in gangs and knife crime.
She started her career in the National Health Service (NHS) at the age of 21 as a hospital cleaner.
Before joining the NHS, Gwata worked in her home country Zimbabwe helping people become more engaged in mental health services.
Speaking to The Sun, Gwata said she applied what she had learnt when back in London. She said:

I didn’t work in an office – I’d wear trainers and jeans and engage with people wherever they were – in McDonald’s, on street corners or in prison.
One girl came from three generations who had never worked. There was a very strong history of criminality and drug use.
She took an overdose, and I helped her. It took a lot of work and she needed a lot of help. Now, she now works in the City.
We broke the cycle. Her children, and her children’s children, will see the possibilities because their mother worked. It makes me really proud.

Gwata received the award at The Sun’s Who Cares Wins awards hosted by Davina McCall which took place earlier this week and aired on Channel 4 on 27 November.
She thanked NHS cleaners who are “too often invisible and voiceless”. She said:

I want to thank all my patients who I have looked after, they shared their vulnerability and strength and they made me the nurse I am today.
I share this award with thousands of migrant nurses and midwives who come to this great country to work and support their families back home.

Zimbabwean-born Nurse Named UK's "Best Nurse"

A Zimbabwean woman, Rutendo Zvidza, of Nkulumane suburb, Bulawayo, has opened another nursing training school in Namibia, in a city called Rundu.
Rundu is the capital of the Kavango region in north-eastern Namibia and Namibia’s second largest city.
Zvidza moved to Namibia in 2013 to work as a nurse and established her first nursing training school in Windhoek, Namibia’s capital.
Her nursing school, PMT Healthcare Institute in Windhoek, accepted its first class of students in January 2021 for a Diploma in Nursing Science and Midwifery. The students are expected to graduate early next year.
Zvidza told <a href="https://cite.org.zw/zim-nurse-opens-another-training-school-in-namibia/">CITE in an interview</a> that the new centre in Rundu will start classes in March 2023. She said:

PMT Health Care Institute has expanded to another town, Rundu, which is about 800km away from Windhoek. The centre will start classes next year in March 2023. Of late, we were busy with renovations and logistics of opening the school, which has been done. An inspection of the school has also been done.

Zvidza said the training centre will offer a two-year diploma programme in Enrolled Nursing in Midwifery Science. She said:

On completion, nursing recruits are referred to as enrolled nurses. These are the nurses who will contribute to the improvement of Namibia’s and the world’s healthcare delivery systems.

I am delighted that PMT Health Institute is expanding as a school and this is our second branch for the diploma in Enrolled Nursing in Midwifery Science.

Zvidza also revealed that PMT Health Care Institution has a sister school, Welwitchia Health Training Centre, which has university status.
She gave God credit for all her achievements to date, saying “prayer can unlock many doors.” Said Zvidza:

All this can only be through Christ that we worship. One thing for sure that I can tell you is I have managed to do this because of prayer.
I grew up in a family that was not well up, where people never thought someone like me could do something like this in life or be in a position to touch the world the way I’m doing now but by the grace of God, I never stopped praying.
I never stopped kneeling and praying to God. For real I can say that I’m an example of the wonders that God can do.
I’m still trying, little by little, to learn from the gurus who have done these things before and to follow in their footsteps.
So, at the end of the day, by grooming the best nurses, we can bring positivity to the world.

Zimbabwean Nurse Opens Another Training School In Namibia

A one-year-six-month-old child from Silobini Village died at the gate of Mhlahlandlela Clinic in Matobo, Matabeleland South Province where her parents had waited for about 11 hours begging a security guard and a nurse on duty to assist them.
They, however, failed to get any assistance after the guard and the nurse refused them treatment and admission saying they did not attend to anyone on weekends.
The incident happened two weeks ago.
The child’s father Misheck Maphosa believes his child wouldn’t have died if she had received medical care promptly. He said:
<blockquote>
There is absolutely nothing dignified about watching your child die. No parent should ever have to go through what we have been through.
It was on a Saturday morning and at around 8 am when my wife took our child who had respiratory problems to Mhlahlandlela Clinic for medical attention.
When she got there the security guard then informed her that the clinic does not open on weekends.
My wife then indicated that the banner stated that they attended to emergency cases around the clock but the guard declined and argued that they did not attend to anyone on weekends.
</blockquote>
Maphosa’s wife returned home for lunch around 1 PM and later, Maphosa accompanied his wife back to the clinic to find out why the child had not been attended to. He said:

When we got there after lunch, we found the nurse on duty at the clinic but she did not attend to us.
She also refused us entry into the clinic. We tried begging her together with the security guard but they refused to allow us inside.
At around 7 PM, I sought the help of a police officer who then talked to the nurse and the clinic was opened at 8 pm. The child died immediately after entering the clinic.

He said his daughter died at the gate exactly at 8.05 PM.
Silobini Village head Mannford Ndiweni confirmed the incident saying the community is not happy with the nurse in question and community members have since submitted their complaints to her superiors. Said Ndiweni:

What happened is true and it’s pretty disturbing. We have received a lot of complaints about the nurse from community members and the loss of this child shows that this nurse is not performing her duties of saving the lives of people properly.
We have since set out our findings in detail, along with the recommendations we have made in order to ensure that the lessons of this tragic case which we forwarded to the relevant authorities should never happen again at the clinic.
We are currently waiting for their response because this case needs to be decisively dealt with.

Child Dies At Clinic Gate After 11-hour Wait

The Zimbabwe Nurses Association (ZINA) has welcomed the decision by the government to extend its waiver on the re-appointment of health workers who had left the service to March 31, 2023, from September 30 this year.
ZINA president Enock Dongo told <a href="https://www.newzimbabwe.com/desperate-government-extends-reappointment-period-for-fired-retired-nurses-as-health-workers-flight-to-greener-pastures-persists/">NewZimbabwe.com</a> that the extension was the government’s admission that things were not well in the health sector. He said:
<blockquote>
This is a clear admission on the part of government that things are not well in the health sector.
A lot of health workers have left for greener pastures and the private sector, leaving gaps that have not been filled.
Government’s call is very serious and we support the return of those who are eligible so as to give service to the public, the most affected by current shortages.
These professionals have not just left services for no apparent reason; they left because of poor working conditions, poor remuneration, intimidation by the state and a general lack of dialogue between the employer and employee.
These have to be addressed, otherwise these re-appointments will be premature. If government fails to do so then they will either look at their colleagues who are still employed and opt not to join or join and leave again.
</blockquote>
According to a letter signed by Health Services Board acting executive director, Angelbert Mbengwa, the government extended the waiver by six months. It reads:
<blockquote>
It is noted that the Board extended the waiver of reappointment for former health workers who need to rejoin the service to Central Hospitals and Provincial Medical Directors for a period of six months from 01 April 2022 to 30 September 2022.
Please be advised that the waiver has been extended for a further period of six months from 1 October 2022 to 31 March 2023 to facilitate urgent appointments to fill vacant posts in institutions.
However, the reappointment of the following categories shall be centralized at the Board; all former nurses applying to rejoin the service, members who were discharged from the service on grounds of misconduct, convicted of a criminal offence, or terminated through medical grounds.
In view of the above, Central Hospitals and Provincial Medical Directors shall continue approving applications for reappointment of the other grades as communicated before. Institutions should thus submit the applications for the above two categories to the Board.
The General Manager of the Salary Service Bureau is therefore being instructed to accept reappointments authorised at stations in line with the above framework.

Govt Releases Interview Dates For Nurses

Health and Child Care Permanent Secretary Dr Gerald Gwinji has said Government owes 20 000 nurses over US$5 million in unpaid salaries and allowances due to a grading system anomaly.
The nurses were wrongly graded in D1 when Government changed its grading system. Gwinji said consultations are underway with Treasury to pay those affected. He also said Government will also regrade the affected nurses so that it doesn’t accumulate the debt. The experienced nurses graded in D1 earn US$419, which is less than some junior nurses who earn around US$600 monthly.
Zimbabwe Nurses Association secretary-general Mr Enoch Dongo expressed concern over the delay in payment of outstanding salaries and allowances.
