Sandra Mtukudzi, the eldest daughter of the late musician Oliver Mtukudzi, has claimed that her stepmother, Daisy Mtukudzi, made her share meals with the family pet when she was young.
Sandra also claimed that Daisy ensured she did not receive the same privileges as her siblings in the Tuku household.
In a recent interview with DJ Ollah on his podcast, Sandra, along with her sibling Selmor, shared these experiences growing up with their stepmother.
The Mtukudzi siblings have been in the public eye recently due to a festival held at Pakare Paye Arts Centre to honour their late father.
Sandra described their upbringing under Daisy’s strict rules, alleging that there were times when Daisy only allowed her to eat food meant for the family dog, while her siblings, Sam and Samantha, received better treatment.
Sam, now deceased, and Samantha are Daisy’s children with Oliver Mtukudzi, whom he married after his first marriage to Melody Murape. Melody is the mother of Sandra and Selmor. Said Sandra:

I would be told that I had to share the pot with the dog. We had a dog called Kwanai and while others were eating rice, I would be told that I would get my sadza from the same pot as Kwanai.
Sandra claimed that on another occasion, she had got home to discover that her family had moved, leaving her in an unfurnished house. She said:
I remember an incident that happened when we lived in Kwekwe at a place called Glenwood. I was 16 turning 17 at that time.
I knew my mum (step mum Daisy) and dad were building in Norton although I didn’t know that there was a house being built during that entire time. Everyone else knew about the house but I didn’t because I wasn’t supposed to know.
So when the house was done, I remember they called people from church for a farewell. That’s when I found out that they would be moving but I was not told the date when this would happen.
Then a few days later I met people in town telling me that they had seen my father around. So I thought that when I arrived home, I would find my parents at home.
When I got the house was empty. I was so touched. People had gone to their new home and I was left with the garden boy in an empty home.

She also claimed that when she was young, she felt like she was treated worse than the family maid. Said Sandra:

I remember the day, we were told that we were going to a party. As children, we were excited at this but then the next day, we saw only Sam and Samantha preparing for the party.
I, on the other hand, was given a heap of laundry I needed to do. We had a maid but somehow I felt I was below the maid. Even in the house, Sam and Samantha had their rooms that were well prepared but I shared one with the maid.

It was really painful and this is not just about the bedroom. It felt that I wasn’t appreciated or loved like the other children.
Sandra said that since their father was often on tour, it was hard for him to see the mistreatment they experienced. She felt that sometimes he appeared to be overwhelmed by Daisy.

Sandra Mtukudzi’s Shocking Claim: "Daisy Fed Me Dog Food"

In a podcast interview with DJ Ollah 7 on Thursday, Selmor and her sister Sandra, daughters of the late music icon Oliver Mtukudzi, criticised their stepmother, Daisy.
This interview followed Selmor’s experience at the inaugural Oliver Mtukudzi International Festival of the Arts (OMIFA) at Pakare Paye Arts Centre in Norton over the weekend.
Initially not included in the lineup, Selmor was added after a public outcry. However, she left the stage in tears after performing just one song.
Sandra is Tuku’s eldest child from his marriage to Melody Murape, making her and Selmor siblings. Sam (now deceased) and Samantha are Tuku’s children with Daisy.
During the podcast, Selmor said that she struggled to manage her emotions after receiving a warm reception from fans. She said:

It was my first time performing at the Pakare Paye stage after the death of my father. I became emotional when we arrived only to see my father’s office locked. When I appeared on stage, I was touched by the people who showed me love.
</blockquote>
Selmor also dismissed claims that her playlist was targeted at her stepmother, Daisy, adding that she was shocked by her omission by the OMIFA 2024 organising team led by her half-sister Samantha. She said:

During my show, I always start with the song “Changu Chiiko,” and then “Seiko’ with a low tempo.
We then shift gears as we proceed as has become the norm at our shows. People who frequent our shows know our playlist better and that playlist was not targeted at anyone…
I was pained when I realised that I had been omitted from the initial line-up for the festival. I only got an invitation via e-mail on short notice.
To my surprise, the organising team started planning this event in June.

Selmor (41), said he was willing to participate at family events. She said:
<blockquote>
It’s quite unfortunate that they keep on excluding me from family events. I was also shocked when the festival organisers claimed they had omitted me from the line-up because they had a small budget.
To my surprise, I have never asked for payment to perform at family events. I was also shocked when the organisers told me that they had a tight budget for the show.
</blockquote>
She said their late father, Tuku, had high hopes for the family and wanted them to collaborate on a song before he died. Said Selmor:

His situation was difficult because of Mama (Daisy) who didn’t want us to be close to him.
</blockquote>
Selmor paid tribute to her late half-brother Sam, saying he was a level-headed man. She said:
<blockquote>
He was a different person altogether. He knew his bloodline. At one point, he bought an expensive watch for her sister Selby after an international tour.
</blockquote>
She appealed to the public to disassociate her husband Tendai Manatsa, from the Mtukudzi family drama. Said Selmor:

Tendai should not be included in this issue. He is only a son-in-law who should not be dragged into this matter.
</blockquote>
Meanwhile, Selmor’s elder sister, Sandra, claimed that Daisy was the stumbling block in uniting Tuku’s family. Said Sandra:

Before our father died, he sat down with all his daughters, including Samantha, and advised us to unite.
He advised us to plan family events together. To my shock, she appears to have forgotten all that our dad has taught us.
I was shocked that there was a family event which was held in Madziva before the festival where Mama (Daisy), Samantha and Faith attended.
The exclusion is not only about Selmor, but all of Tuku’s daughters and family members.

Sandra, who travelled from the United Kingdom for the festival said she was willing to unite the family. She said:
<blockquote>
I am open to dialogue and anything that can unite you as a family. Family events should also be in harmony and unity. We are open for a mediator to come and unite this family.
When I was going to college while staying with Mama (Daisy) in Norton, I was always in arrears.
It was a private college where I was learning with kids from rich backgrounds.
Things normalised after Dad contacted the principal to inform him about everything which was needed in school.

Sandra also described Daisy as embodying the archetype of a typical stepmother, characterising her as both wicked and selfish. She said:
<blockquote>
I stayed with Dad for a long time while she was with my stepmother after I finished school. I can’t lie, it was a difficult situation. A lot would happen.
I would always see that there was favouritism for children. I remember this incident in Glenwood, Kwekwe, I was 16, and dad and his new wife were building a house in Norton, the green house.
I was not informed about the house, even though other children knew. After the house was done, Dad came to bid us farewell. I didn’t know the date they were moving out.
</blockquote>
Sandra said a few days later, people said that they met Tuku in town. She said:
<blockquote>
I went home and it was a sorrowful state. I was hurt. The house was empty and I didn’t know where they went.
</blockquote>
Daisy recently claimed that she was a victim of cyberbullying, as people have portrayed her as cruel to her stepdaughters.

Selmor Mtukudzi’s stepmother, Daisy, claims she is a victim of cyberbullying, as people have portrayed her as cruel to her late husband Oliver Mtukudzi’s daughter.
In an interview with <a href="https://www.herald.co.zw/mtukudzis-widow-opens-up-on-selmor-drama/">The Herald</a> on Sunday night, following Selmor’s abrupt departure from the stage during her first song at the inaugural Oliver Mtukudzi International Festival of the Arts (OMIFA) at Pakare Paye Arts Centre in Norton, Daisy said that “the drama” was beyond her control.
Selmor ended her performance almost immediately, despite being allocated a two-hour prime slot, while other performers had just under an hour.
Sandra Mtukudzi, Tuku’s eldest child and Selmor’s mother’s firstborn, was flown in from the United Kingdom by Daisy to attend the festival but was unable to persuade Selmor to complete her act. Selmor’s husband, Tendai Manatsa, also failed to convince her to continue.
Daisy said that while the world witnessed Selmor’s “drama”, she felt unfairly judged on social media. She said:

At least the world has witnessed all the drama. I know people will still attack me, but what have I done to deserve this embarrassment?
We did our best to accommodate the entire team, but this drama was beyond my control. I will leave it to God and the world to judge us.
</blockquote>
Besides all the drama, Daisy said she thoroughly enjoyed the festival as people came in numbers. She said:

Honestly, I thoroughly enjoyed the festival as people came in numbers.
It was not about Daisy or whoever, because we were commemorating an icon here.
Of course, the drama occurred, but we were supposed to respect our legend.

Virginia Mukwesha, daughter of the late Mbuya Stella Chiweshe, travelled from Germany to attend the festival.
Mukwesha expressed her disappointment with Selmor’s conduct, saying if Selmor was not prepared for the event, she should have chosen to stay home. She said:

I was shocked by her conduct because walking off the stage was a sign of disrespect. If she was not ready for the event, she should have stayed at home.
The drama was too much because fans forked out their money to come and celebrate Tuku’s legacy.
Selmor was given the right platform to showcase her talent and prove her worth as a musician.
Instead of celebrating her father’s legacy, she will now be remembered as a drama queen who spoiled the event.

Daisy Responds To Online Criticism After Selmor "Drama" At Mtukudzi Festival

The late musician Oliver “Tuku” Mtukudzi’s alleged son, Aaron Chaka’s High Court application seeking an order compelling the office of the Registrar of Births and Deaths to change his surname to Mtukudzi, has been struck off the roll.
According to <a href="https://www.newsday.co.zw/local-news/article/200030134/tuku-son-loses-high-court-application-on-using-family-name">NewsDay</a>, Chaka, who was the applicant, had cited the Registrar of Births and Deaths, Mtukudzi’s widow Daisy Mtukudzi and the Master of the High Court as respondents.
High Court judge Justice Fatima Maxwell, who heard the application, struck the matter off the roll and ordered Aaron to obtain scientific confirmation that Mtkudzi is his biological father so that he can approach the Registrar-General to correct the error.
Chaka had sought an order directing the Registrar of Birth and Deaths to delete his father’s surname and particulars and replace them with those of Oliver Mtukudzi.
In his founding affidavit, Chaka stated that he was informed by his biological mother, Rose Makumbe, that she and Mtukudzi had a love relationship in 1978 which led to their cohabiting for a couple of months.
He said they considered themselves as husband and wife though their union was not registered.
Chaka claimed that his mother fell pregnant and he was born on January 3, 1979.
He said a misunderstanding resulted in his parents separating before a birth certificate was obtained for him and his mother returned to her maternal relatives with him.
Chaka submitted that with time, his mother got married customarily to one Josiah Chaka, who assumed the role of a caring father and provider of basic necessities.
He said his mother was forced to acquire a birth certificate for him using her maternal details and other supportive documents before his step-father agreed to use his own details so that they would appear on the birth certificate as his father.
Chaka told the court that when he reached 25 years of age, his mother informed him who his biological father was and that he assumed the surname Chaka for his convenience.
He said in 2010, his mother took him to Norton, where Mtukudzi resided and he was introduced to the late musician.
Chaka said Mtukudzi acknowledged him and promised to introduce him to his other siblings from an earlier marriage, Samantha and Selmor.
Mtukudzi then passed away before the introductions were done.
Chaka said the introductions were only done in April 2019 by one Godfrey Mukonowenzou, a brother of Mtukudzi, who was appointed family guardian.
Mukonowenzou allegedly promised Chaka that he and his kinsman would initiate the process of correcting the details on his birth certificate and align them to his correct paternal lineage cogent to his blood, tribal roots and ancestry.
Chaka said in February 2022, a team consisting of Mukonowenzou, Bybit Mtukudzi, Rose Makumbe and himself visited the offices of the Registrar of Births and Deaths.
He said they were interviewed and asked to depose to affidavits stating the history, facts and other supporting details relating to his birth and parents.
An affidavit by Josiah was requested, but could not be availed as he had passed away in 2019 and an affidavit was deposed to by Chaka’s half-sister, Jenifer Chaka.
Chaka said despite availing the affidavits, the Registrar of Births and Deaths further requested a court order on the basis that owing to Mtukudzi’s popularity and status, an order from a court of law was necessary.
He said Mukonowenzou then approached the community court of Chief Mutumba on February 26, 2023, seeking an order to compel Daisy to release Mtukudzi’s death certificate and a default judgment was issued.
However, when Chaka approached the Registrar of Births and Deaths with the order from the community court, he was advised that only the High Court had the jurisdiction to issue an appropriate order and he then filed this application before the top court.
He submitted an affidavit by Mukonowenzou confirming Mtukudzi’s relationship with Makumbe, his birth certificate, and Bybit’s affidavit confirming that she knew about his birth and that he was her late brother’s son.
Makumbe also submitted an affidavit outlining her relationship with Mtukudzi, the birth of Aaron and the circumstances in which a birth certificate was obtained for the applicant.
Jennifer, in her affidavit, also stated that her father used to tell her that although his name appears on Aaron’s birth certificate, he was not his biological son.
She said her father revealed their mother was already pregnant with another man called Oliver Mtukudzi by the time they started cohabiting.
The Registrar of Births and Deaths opposed the application arguing that the relief sought by the applicant was the cancellation and re-registration of the birth certificate.
The Registrar said Aaron needed to satisfy the requirements for cancellation and re-registration of his birth certificate.
The Registrar also pointed out that Aaron should avail Mtukudzi’s death certificate and affidavits by Josiah’s blood relatives confirming that Josiah was not his biological father.
The Registrar further requested a paternity test.
In his answering affidavit, Chaka stated that there were no surviving relatives of Josiah.
He also claimed that Daisy was refusing to hand over Mtukudzi’s death certificate.
Chaka said in his view, a paternity test was not necessary as there are affidavits from members of Mtukudzi’s family accepting him.

Aaron Chaka, who says he is Oliver Mtukudzi's son, wanted to change his last name to Mtukudzi. But the High Court said he needs proof. Chaka has to get a scientific test to show he is really Mtukudzi's child before he can change his name. Chaka said his mom told him Mtukudzi is his dad. He met Mtukudzi before he died and Mtukudzi promised to help him meet his other siblings. Now, Chaka needs to prove his claim in court before he can use the Mtukudzi name.

Oliver Mtukudzi's "Son" Aaron, Loses High Court Application On Using Mtukudzi Surname

Musician Jah Prayzah said that the late national hero Oliver Mtukudzi inspired many artistes to pursue musical careers.
The multi-award-winning musician, whose real name is Mukudzeyi Mukombe, paid tribute to Zimbabwe’s heroes and heroines on Heroes Day in a message posted on the social media site Instagram on Monday. He wrote:

On this special day, (Heroes Day), we reflect on the sacrifices made by those who fought for our freedom and independence.
We honour their bravery, commitment and remember that our nation’s story was shaped by their unwavering dedication.

Tuku became the country’s first artiste to be declared a national hero.

The music fraternity today celebrates the legacy of the late music superstar <a href="https://www.pindula.co.zw/Oliver_Mtukudzi">Oliver Mtukudzi</a>, four years after his death.    
Tuku, as the late icon was affectionately-known internationally, <a href="https://zero.pindula.co.zw/oliver-mtukudzi-dies/">succumbed to diabetes-related complications </a>at Avenues Clinic on 23 January 2019 aged 66.
One of the most celebrated Zimbabwean musicians ever, Mtukudzi’s glittering career spanned nearly four decades with 67 albums under his belt.
His daughter Selma took to microblogging site Twitter to remember her father. She said:

<a href="https://www.pindula.co.zw/Tendai_Manatsa">Tendai Manatsa</a>, the couple’s son who is married to <a href="https://www.pindula.co.zw/Oliver_Mtukudzi">Oliver Mtukudzi</a>‘s daughter, <a href="https://www.pindula.co.zw/Selmor_Mtukudzi">Selmor Mtukudzi</a>, posted the update on social media this Tuesday. He said:

Zex was a retired Zimbabwean singer, songwriter, and bass player. 
Stella and Zex Manatsa had their wedding at Rufaro Stadium on August 25, 1979. It attracted about 50 000 people. <a href="https://www.pindula.co.zw/Thomas_Mapfumo">Thomas Mapfumo</a>, Tineyi Chikupo, Manu Kambami and many others performed on the day. Oliver Mtukudzi was supposed to perform but he had an urgent commitment on the day.

The late musician Oliver Mtukudzi’s daughter Selmor has promised her fans that her son will soon release his first song.
In a Facebook post, Selmor said her son had for some time been nagging her to open a YouTube channel for him and she has finally relented. Wrote Selmor:

Tocky Vibes, real name Obey Makamure and Soul Jah Love have collaborated on a new song called Vakorinde.
The two Zimdancehall artists said the song will be released “soon” and that they drew inspiration for the collaboration from the late musician Oliver Mtukudzi. According to 263Chat, the duo said:
<blockquote>Vakorinde itwo chete look out for that video, Ane nharo nazvo ngaaende anofukunura guva remhondoro kune mhondoro yakasiya yazvitaura (we are the best, those who do not believe this should go and exhume music legend Tuku, he is the one who said this before he died.

Before his death earlier this year, Mtukudzi revealed his admiration for the duo. Speaking during an interview with Star FM, the late music legend reportedly said:
I listen to Tocky Vibes and also Soul Jah Love, however, Jah Love overshadows the good message in his music with his poor conduct.

The family of late music icon and national hero, Oliver Mtukudzi, has issued a statement advising Zimbabweans and fans to be wary of events organised in Tuku’s name without the involvement of the family or the management of the Tuku brand.
Here’s the full statement
<blockquote>As the Mtukudzi family would like to thank everyone who comforted us during the hard time when we lost a son, father, brother, uncle, husband and grandfather, Dr Oliver Mtukudzi.
We appreciate the support shown to us from everyone at this very hard time and we wish that such a gesture be accorded to everyone else at their time of need.
We are still trying to come to terms with the loss of our pillar of strength and as such we have not engaged any organization or individual to organize, plan any events on behalf and for the Mtukudzi family here in Zimbabwe and elsewhere. We would like to distance ourselves from any events or gatherings that are being held in the name of the Mtukudzi family as we are still grieving.
All events that have the endorsement of Tuku Music and the Mtukudzi Family will be posted on the official Tuku Music social media pages, the first such official event being the Cape Town jazz Festival that Dr Mtukudzi was meant to have performed at this year and the show will now be a celebration of his life in music by his backing band the Black Spirits. Oliver Mtukudzi died in Harare on 23 January 2019, after a battle with diabetes and was buried at his rural home in Madziva. He was declared a National Hero by the government.
Some events are apparently being organised in the name of the family without its approval.

In an interview with The Standard, South Africa-based artist Lebani Sirenji, popularly known as Rasta, responded to criticism of his painting of Oliver Mtukudzi.
Sirenji has been criticised for painting portraits of dead celebrities and it is his recent work honouring Mtukudzi which got many social media users angry. Social media criticised the artist for doing a portrait which doesn’t resemble Mtukudzi. However, Sirenji said people do not understand his paintings. Said Sirenji:
<blockquote>My paintings are more than just visual art. It’s a movement, which moves one’s mind to have faith and hope in life. People have mixed feelings over my art because art is done in different ways and many of the pictures that have found their way onto social media are pictures of half-done portraits. People criticise me before the final product which will excite them is not yet out. The people on Twitter have no mercy and are too quick to judge, they don’t know my goals. Even a soccer player may falter and get booed, but come back stronger in the next match.</blockquote>
Rasta said he wants to finish Oliver Mtukudzi’s potrait because when he met the late musician at Bra Hugh Masekela’s memorial last year, he encouraged him to continue doing his work. He said he wants to present the painting and give it to Mtukudzi’s family.

Rasta Responds To Criticism Following Oliver Mtukudzi Painting

Oliver Mtukudzi’s first wife Melody Murape revealed that the late national hero asked for his daughters’ forgiveness for not supporting them while he was on his deathbed.
In an interview with H-Metro, Melody Murape, who is the mother of Mtukudzi’s eldest daughters Selmor and Sandra, regretted not helping his daughters while he has helped other musicians. Melody is quoted as saying:
<blockquote>He said forgive me, my daughters, I have helped a number of musicians, but I have done nothing to you.
The good thing is that he realised it before his death. He (Tuku) even apologised to his daughters and specifically Selmor.</blockquote>
Mtukudzi established his Pakare Paye Arts in Norton where he groomed several musicians and collaborated with others.
In an interview with journalist Wonder Guchu in 2012, Mtukudzi’s daughter Selmor revealed that her father did not support her musical career. She lamented that with her father’s support, she would go places with her musical talent.

Oliver Mtukudzi Asked His Neglected Daughters For Forgiveness Just Before He Died

The late national hero Oliver Mtukudzi’s first wife, Melody Murape was reportedly shunned at her former husband’s funeral as the second wife, Daisy, was feted by relatives. Mtukudzi’s relatives and senior government officials totally ignored Melody.
Speaking at the funeral on Sunday, Mtukudzi’s child with Melody, Sandra, eulogizes her father as having been a unifier. She said:
<blockquote>I am so humbled by the love that you have shown for our father. This father is for us all. I want to share with you one thing that my father has taught me. He was a unifier who has left us united as the children, so I want to thank him for that. I thank you, I love you, my sisters.
My father has unified us as children and even some people whom we had not seen for years, I just want to thank him for that. I want to acknowledge the presence of my mother, as my father was married before to my mother, Melody Murape.</blockquote>
Melody, who is the mother of Mtukudzi’s eldest children, Selmor and Sandra, was married to the late music icon in 1979. They divorced some years later after Mtukudzi married a second wife, Daisy Mushonga.

Mtukudzi's First Wife Shunned At Funeral, Daughter Sandra Expresses Disapproval

Musician Oliver Mtukudzi was buried yesterday at his rural home in Madziwa, Mashonaland Central province.
He was the first musician to be declared a national hero. His burial in Madziwa was as per the wishes of his family. Mtukudzi’s burial was attended by thousands who came to respect the music icon. Politicians such as  Defence and War Veterans Minister Oppah Muchinguri-Kashiri, MDC leader Nelson Chamisa and MDC-T leader Thokozani Khupe were in attendance. Entertainers such as Alick Macheso, Thomas Mapfumo, Neria’s lead actress Jesesi Mungoshi and poet Albert Nyathi were in attendance.

Oliver Mtukudzi Buried

Mtukudzi’s children wanted the remains of their father to be interred at the National Heroes Acre. Mtukudzi died from diabetes on Wednesday afternoon at the Avenues Clinic where he was admitted. He was conferred with the national hero status by President Emmerson Mnangagwa on Thursday.
Mail and Telegraph sources revealed that one of Mtukudzi’s aunts insisted that the late music legend should be buried in his village of origin, Madziva. Said the source:
<blockquote>The children were agreeable that he be buried at the national shrine where they would create a Trust and his grave would serve as a monument and tourist attraction for visitors from across the world just like Michael Jackson’s but one of their distant aunts disagreed with them and opted for Madziwa. They had a series of meetings until the children gave up and succumbed to the aunt’s demands.</blockquote>
A tribute concert was held in honour of Mtukudzi at the National Sports Stadium on Saturday. His body was then airlifted by a military helicopter to his rural home. He will be buried at 2 pm on Sunday afternoon.

Mtukudzi's Children Wanted Late National Hero To Be Buried At The Heroes Acre

National hero Oliver Mtukudzi will be buried tomorrow (Sunday) at his rural home in Madziva.
Government said it will provide 43 buses to ferry the mourners to Madziva on Sunday morning. Addressing journalists in Harare yesterday, Minister of Information, Publicity and Broadcasting Services Monica Mutsvangwa said 30 buses will ferry people from Harare. Mutsvangwa said there are five buses organised to ferry people from Mashonaland West while five others have been set aside for Mashonaland Central. There will be one bus for each of the remaining provinces. The Mtukudzi family was allocated two buses. Mutsvangwa said the Harare buses will depart for Madziva on Sunday morning ahead of the burial at 2PM.

Chimurenga musician, Thomas Mapfumo headlines a line-up of local musicians set to perform at late music icon, Oliver ‘Tuku’ Mtukudzi’s send-off concert at the National Sports Stadium in Harare tomorrow.
The show, organised by Chipaz Promotions and other local music promoters, will honour the Mtukudzi’s life and achievements. Tuku passed on Wednesday at aged 66. Among the artists set to perform at the event are Charles Charamba, Nicholas Zacharia, Baba Harare, Hope Masike, Sulumani Chimbetu, Enzo Ishall, Freeman and Edith Weutonga. Also featuring on the line-up are, Ex-Q, Jah Prayzah, Alick Macheso, Fungisai Mashavave, Andy Muridzo, among many others.
Reports also linked veteran South African musician, Yvonne Chaka Chaka to a surprise performance at the concert which will be free of charge. Tuku’s burial has been set for his rural Madziwa home in Mashonaland Central.
